I watch quite a lot of videos on TH-cam because the presenter's enthusiasm for his or her subject is infectious. Catherine is clearly very enthusiastic about rocks and that makes her interesting to listen to.
In theory the waterfall *could be a non-spewing geyser… where the water flows in down low, then boils over lava deep down and shoots up through the core of the mountain, cooling off as it rises, returning to a liquid state as it finally crests the flow zone… but if so then that water would likely be rather warm and very nutrient rich, making the surrounding stone all covered in algae, lichen, and plant growth…
@@gibbous_silver i was going with purely geological sources that would create the desired effect, i never consider human engineering on a build where the theme was something built out of what was already there, plus the erosion would not have been possible to that scale in human timeline, unless they faked the erosion as well. But as far as lifeform created methods then yes, even primitive water moving could do that
Could you do another collab with Catherine, showcasing samples of all the different rock and mineral types in Minecraft? What is Tuff? What would the closest real-world rock be to Netherack? Can Geodes really grow big enough to stand inside? Can lava and water make Obsidian? Does Diorite really look like bird poop? From the comments: What kind of stone, is "Stone"? It'd be really good to see some of this stuff, and get people interested in it all. My uncle is a Geologist, and my mum is a retired Geography teacher. We have small samples of lots of different rocks, metals, and minerals, including Quartz, Amethyst Geode, Obsidian, Gold. It's really interesting stuff, and it can actually give inspiration for builds, just to handle the stuff.
Tuff is actually a real rock, you can find images of it in the internet. Lava and water does make obsidian, but it has to be very fluid lava, and I don't think water is actually required make it, it's just when it cools down, but since lava in minecraft doesn't cool down, they used water to do that. I'm not an expert, but I heard things here and there.
Actually learned more from this then school and was super funny and entertaining when she said "because it's such a small scale" and then you jumped of the mountain I was laughing for so long
Well, to be fair, whilst mountains in Minecraft are very massive and impressive, they're pretty small compared to IRL mountains. Like you can only build maximum a 380 meters tall mountains in Minecraft, and with generated terrain it's only 250 meters. Meanwhile, there are IRL mountains that are kilometers in height.
Engaging in school is typical how you learn. Do you sit and just listen, go browse random shit on the internet during classes or do you actually engage in your education?
The way she talks is so engaging! I’ve never really been into geology before but I honestly couldn’t stop watching, very creative video concept and very well connected!
It takes an incredible amount of knowledge and understanding of a topic to explain it so simply like that, she really knows her stuff and must be a fantastic teacher
Not sure if Catherine will ever see these but if she does, thank you for your time and teaching all of us Minecraft gamers a little geology lesson! Such a cool collaboration and unique way of meshing two completely (or not so) different communities!
Mumbo, I know this isn’t normally the type of video that you do and you’re probably nervous about the reception but my dude way to go! This is such a unique blend of education and entertainment. Your execution is engaging and dynamic and honestly flawless. Congratulations to you sir.
People who are passionate about what they talk about are usually much more interesting to listen to. Making the video closely related to a game (here Minecraft) that you probably already like is another great trick to keep your attention.
As a woman who has a bachelors degree in geology, I love seeing other passionate women in the same field! Geology really is such a cool, amazing, and interesting friend of study!

I'm sorry if I came off as annoying, but I understand your feeling of not wanting to use certain words because I have a lot of those words as well, so I wanted to help you a bit.
"When something is magical it doesn't have to be scientific" The Artificers would like a word. In all seriousness, this is such a cool video. Mad props to Catherine for being so chill and personable, she's so interesting to listen to!
I can't believe it took me 2 years to see this. And now being a first year in the university of Portsmouth and a geography student who has been taught by Catherine this is so cool!
When you understand and actually enjoy the concepts that she discusses in this video, it's actually really interesting to listen to. Plus, her referring to the mountains as the creator's names is really funny, but also kind of fitting?
canyons are formed by fluvial activity eg by rivers cutting into the sediment and forming their own basins, meanwhile stalagmites form in karst caves, underground. So I would say its a geologically impossible build. the only possible realistical solution that I can think of is instead of treating them like stalagmites (that they acually are), we look at them like weatheres limestone that form a stone forest. Kunming stone forest for example. (This place is in China so it even fits the general location of the boatem mountains)
Biologist here but I suggest you learn about both while in school, lots of cool stuff to discover in these areas. Narural history depends a lot on the knowledge of both areas (specially if you like paleo, both geology and biology are important). Just have fun while at it. cheers
As a geology student i am very happy right now. Doesn't happen to often, that geology stands in the spotlight like this and I really like the analysis Catherine puts forward.
I have never in my life been interested in geology, but Catherine is an amazingly inspiring educator - and now I'm super keen to learn more about rocks! What a wonderful human!
This is so wholesome. Given the audience of your videos, you’ve almost certainly inspired (or at least contributed to) someone to become a figure geologist/scientist/lifelong learner.
10:49 I picture a university professor taking a break from marking exams to check their emails, and getting an email that just reads, "look at this cool rock I found!"
Hmm. Cleo: A Minecraft TH-camr and content creator. Was also a teacher once, though not at a prestigious academy. Katherine: A working geologist, working with a university to study the field of geology. Has gone on many geological expeditions to study Himalayan topography, geology, geography, etc. Not much of a comparison, is it? Edit: Please stop trying to inform me that Cleo was a geologist. The original comment, the one in which this is a reply to, clearly states "Given that Cleo is a geologist..." And so, I have come here assuming that such a detail would be a triviality, and no one would need to make mention of it. However, that was apparently not correct. So I will speak plainly: I know that Cleo was a geologist. But she is no longer working. My comparison still stands whether or not Cleo was a geologist.
one thing I picked up on in my intro geology class elective was that diorite and andesite have approximately the same mineral and silica content, the main difference is grain size, if it cooled fast (extrusive, possibly ejected out of a volcano) it will have larger grains and be closer to diorite, and if it cooled slowly (intrusive, likely magma trapped in the earths crust) it will have smaller grains and be closer to andesite. andesite, diorite, granite (and even basalt) are all igneous rocks meaning they formed from cooling magma.
Yeah I saw a video where architects reacted to time-lapses of building in minecraft, And they immediately had to pause it, because they didn't expect them to start building in the middle. Since building in minecraft is more akin to 3D modeling than actually building irl.

I'm a geologist who's been following you and your redstone videos for a while. I love the interaction of Minecraft with real geology and have been itching to see more real-world associations within the game (give me volcanoes in the game, Mojang!). So to see you go to a geology professor has been the absolute best! Our geology club at my alma mater has a geology club styled Minecraft server that we hope to construct some real-world geological models like mountain folding belts and volcanic features :) Keep up the cool ideas!

I just love that the most realistic mountain of the bunch, is the one with a ballerina cyclops in it.

@@darkalystar Yeah, it's the mark of a skilled lecturer.
Lots of people can stand there and spew facts, dry and uninteresting. I'm in this picture and I don't like it.
Lots of people can be engaging but ultimately accomplish little other than entertain your time away. Which is fine, when that's what you want.
A good lecturer takes the best of both. This is what you want in an educator.

Hearing from someone clearly so enthusiastic about her work talk about it on camera is always a treat, and even more so when they're about to connect that to something they typically wouldn't connect it to.

I watch quite a lot of videos on TH-cam because the presenter's enthusiasm for his or her subject is infectious. Catherine is clearly very enthusiastic about rocks and that makes her interesting to listen to.
In theory the waterfall *could be a non-spewing geyser… where the water flows in down low, then boils over lava deep down and shoots up through the core of the mountain, cooling off as it rises, returning to a liquid state as it finally crests the flow zone… but if so then that water would likely be rather warm and very nutrient rich, making the surrounding stone all covered in algae, lichen, and plant growth…
or the water is moved from the ocean by the temple
Two words: Yes Please
Tuff is actually a real rock, you can find images of it in the internet.
Lava and water does make obsidian, but it has to be very fluid lava, and I don't think water is actually required make it, it's just when it cools down, but since lava in minecraft doesn't cool down, they used water to do that. I'm not an expert, but I heard things here and there.
Yes, diorite really does look like bird poop.
The last 2 questions are a yes, but idk about the other ones
More importantly, what kind of stone is stone?
Actually learned more from this then school and was super funny and entertaining when she said "because it's such a small scale" and then you jumped of the mountain I was laughing for so long
ngl that is so true
Well, to be fair, whilst mountains in Minecraft are very massive and impressive, they're pretty small compared to IRL mountains.
Like you can only build maximum a 380 meters tall mountains in Minecraft, and with generated terrain it's only 250 meters.
Meanwhile, there are IRL mountains that are kilometers in height.

When you understand and actually enjoy the concepts that she discusses in this video, it's actually really interesting to listen to. Plus, her referring to the mountains as the creator's names is really funny, but also kind of fitting?
Why wouldn't it be named after the creator?
I wish that you'd asked about cubs canyon as well. It would be really cool to see how the canyon connects to the story of pearl's mountains
canyons are formed by fluvial activity eg by rivers cutting into the sediment and forming their own basins, meanwhile stalagmites form in karst caves, underground.

Given that Cleo is a geologist, that title matchup feels a bit unfair xD
Hi!
Hi there
Hello
I like your videos!
one thing I picked up on in my intro geology class elective was that diorite and andesite have approximately the same mineral and silica content, the main difference is grain size, if it cooled fast (extrusive, possibly ejected out of a volcano) it will have larger grains and be closer to diorite, and if it cooled slowly (intrusive, likely magma trapped in the earths crust) it will have smaller grains and be closer to andesite. andesite, diorite, granite (and even basalt) are all igneous rocks meaning they formed from cooling magma.
This is dope! I could see him doing this with more professionals, like engineers or architects, to see how builds could exist in the real world.
Engineer reacts to flying machines.
For example RCE
Yeah I saw a video where architects reacted to time-lapses of building in minecraft,
And they immediately had to pause it, because they didn't expect them to start building in the middle.
Since building in minecraft is more akin to 3D modeling than actually building irl.
