Amazing work! May I suggest something with resin printing? After you have solidified a model, hollow it again in your slicer (I like 3mm walls) and add some drainage holes. It saves a lot of resin and the solid interior isn’t as fully cured as the outside after it gets its second cure and can still cause splits. I’ve been resin printing for years as part of my job and it’s always a learning curve - you did a spectacular job and should be so proud of yourself!
Yup, this is the thing I was screaming internally too at. With miniatures I go as low as 1mm with walls at times and have not had any issues. This is very easy to do in the same 3D printing toolkit that you already were trying in Blender! It has a tab for "edit", which has a button that says "hollow". Click that and you'll get 1mm walls by default, but you can adjust both the thickness of the walls and the internal resolution (to save on file size). After that hollowing out you only need to make some drain holes to the top and bottom of the model to prevent suction forces from ruining the print. All of that could easily be added in fifteen minutes (once you know what you're doing). I'd recommend putting your resin models on a plate wherever you display these, unless you threw them away after printing. They're both big enough that they will weep uncured resin at some point. From my own dumb first prints, I think one 10cm tall bust wept for the first month after I thought it was cured, because I left it solid. I left it in direct sunlight at a window, without any primer on, and rotated it every now and then until it looked like nothing leaked anymore. For cleanup of the table, I recommend getting an oven tray! Couple of bucks for a metal tray you can remove the prints from the plate with, and handle all the resin-drippy bits. Easy to wipe down and not ruin your desk. They do make silicone mats for the purpose as well, but you can buy a dozen oven trays for the same price and they get the job done.

Another Issue that might have been contributing to print failure was that you were printing in front of a window. I have both and SLA and FDM printer, and I've found that for my Elegoo 1) any UV light from the sun can start the curing process so it would have been better to have the blinds closed until the hood was on for printing. 2) TEMPERATURE can cause warping and failure of UV resin. so even if you opened the binds back up, the heating and cooling sitting in front of the window could contribute to failure, other than those two notes, well done. hope you stick with the 3d printing its a fun hobby.
That's awesome! You got a lot of things right on the first try, considering you never used a 3D printer before, good job! There are obviously some pitfalls in the resin 3D printing process, some of which you've encountered, and which gave you some problems after printing. For example, if you ever decide to print more Minecraft exports (or anything else basically): large, flat areas are bad for the process because they start out as an incredibly thin, flimsy layer of barely cured resin that has to hold itself together and that has almost no structural stability when peeling off the film on the bottom of the resin vat, hence the warping on that one large, flat area. To avoid that, it is good to rotate the model such that none of those areas is parallel to the buildplate, for example, if printing a cube, balancing it on one of the corners and holding it up with supports should help a lot. Additionally, if you ever decide to print some bigger things or things that need to be strong (like cosplay props), I'd recommend the filament printers, since a) they are less messy, b) the parts are way stronger, c) you have way more freedom in certain areas, d) the material is cheaper and you don't have to print your models solid throughout. The resin process is better for miniatures and things with fine detail, that's why people often use it for DnD minifigs and other detailed stuff.
Yo thanks that's really helpful! I always saw people tilt their models but I thought it was something to do with the print layers. I'll keep these tips in mind for future prints :D
I do like how you find the music the hermits use and put it in at the appropriate times. I’m watching and instantly “Hey, that’s Scar’s Timelapse music”, “That’s Gem’s main background music”
Hi, two points: 1) Thank you for showing the process of 3D printing and how the main struggle is with software programs. I need to learn 3D printing for my own business. 2) Don't ever feel bad about the tiny brush. My best painting that got noticed by a professional fantasy illustrator was done only using a 000 brush.
You do realize that this did not help me in convincing myself that I don't "need" a resin 3D printer..... This is such an amazing project and love the style and aesthetic you have for all of these projects! I am so happy and proud of what you have done. I discovered you through your recreation of Grian's starter base, and have been here ever since. Keep up the hard work! I hope to eventually have a portion of your skill in stuff like this!
I have a filament printer and omg I super want a resin printer. Like so much. I’ve just started watching, but just be sure you have better ventilation and stuff. Resin printers need more ‘accessories’ and space because they’re super toxic.
@truckerdave8465 I've actually done a little bit of research into resin printing, and I quickly learned about how toxic it was and the need for good ventilation. Appreciate the heads up.
You absolutely have to wear a respirator when working with any amount of liquid resin, none of the various fumes it gives off are safe no matter how you look at it. just PLEASE wear a respirator (made to filter organic vapors at least up to 20x the officially "safe" limit, or you’ll die anyway) or buy a laboratory grade fume hood if you don’t care what money is
My Uncle adores hand painting miniatures, he airbrushes nothing and his ombres and fades are fantastic, seeing you paint this made me think of him. He probably wouldn’t like the hassle of 3D printing but he loves the painting part. The addition of the hot glue felt so right!

6:50 This is my type of dumb humor yay, You have earned yourself a sub. Weird how your not at 1mil yet, very good video and im not even half way through it
If you're getting into resin printing I recommend transitioning from Chitubox to Lychee Slicer, it automatically detects and supports islands and cuts down on prep time immensely.
Greetings from the Warhammer 40k Fandom! We paint mini's all the time, it's a lot of fun once you get the basics down! You did great with this project!
Can we just take a minute to appreciate while she was getting the scarland castle set up, she had the timelapse music on in the background! Love the video so much!!
Speaking of warping, the best thing to do to fight it is to hollow out the model (2-4mm thick walls), leaving few holes for resin to flow out, and it’s better to put a model fully on support so the burn-in layers (the first ones with longer exposure) will stay as a part of support island. You can see what I mean in a lot of tutorials here on TH-cam
big thing about open interior resin prints. make sure you have drain holes. if you don't the pressure inside the build will build up and eventually it'll pop open itself usually leaking resin over the place
it can either take a really long time or a really short time but regardless without drain holes its like having a resin ticking time bomb on your shelf
Air-dry clay separates quite easily from resin prints, but superglue and baking soda is a better medium. (Wear a respirator though!) I'm not trying to backseat, "oh, hurrr durrr, redo the whole thing", just friendly advice for next time!
a bit more on this: the method I mentioned basically welds the two printed segments together, but it sands really well, so it's easier to reshape and sculpt than cured resin, which is relatively soft. Also, it produces a bit of heat, so it's better to use this technique sparingly.
1. Thank you for putting your hard-won problem solving process in the video for anyone who wants to try something similar! 2. This was amazing, the model looks great, and I’m subscribing. ❤
not only is the build absolutely gorgeous and a masterpiece, your video composition and engagement is incredible, i was fully emersed in the video the entire time, and it was very enjoyable to watch!! and your perseverance to learn and complete the project is astounding!! you've earned a subscriber from me :]
either print with a raft which is basically a angled edge so you can get your blade in easier OR get something like a magnetic flexible build plate that attaches and detaches and you can just bend it a bit and itll pop the models off easier
What an awesome project! Thanks for showing the whole process including the struggles, the test projects, and the whole workflow involved! Really made the final result that much more satisfying. I need to try something similar one of these days!
12:15 proud to say I didn't get bored at all in this video! its very well thought out and I loved it even though the topic only started halfway through!

WOW!!! Not only is the model extremely well made, but the way you shot the video and edited it was so cool too! I loved seeing the process. Great work!!!
first of all, amazing video, second of all, thx so much for explaining the process and struggles you went through, some day I wanna print a minecraft base too and being told all the programs and magic buttons will probably make the struggle quite a bit more bearable if I ever try this.
just got your video recommended. Next to the fact, that you looks absolutely beautiful and your smile/laugh is super cute, I loved to watch Gems Megabase coming together over the last 2 years and to see this heck of a difficult way to finally get this printed Megabase into the real world was just a magnificent experience. Thanks for your creativity to find solutions to these problems. Ill check out your prior work after this vdeo, but Im pretty confident, a follow here will be a good thing for the future to see more of this kind of content.Have a nice day
*TRUST THE PROCESS!!!* Seriously though, I'm one of the peeps who met you through the Minecraft video, and realizing you made crafts on your channel I was amazed! As an artist myself (the drawing kind, i guess) it was so inspiring to see someone relate art to building. And THEN you go off and make my FAVORITE hermit's base!?!? Gem is my HERO, so seeing you make her incredible base is just AWESOME! Just the push I needed to subscribe
this is so cool!!! absolutely loved gems build and it looks so cute as a minifig! also i loved the way you explained the whole process of learning how to 3D print!
This is a friendly comment from a person who has two resin printers. AAAA NO, DON'T PUT THE RESIN PRINTER NEAR A WINDOW!!! UV Lights, the one used to harden the resin inside the printer, is the same as the one like the sun, and the machine to "Harden the resin" can be instead be substituted for the sun, though taking a bit longer. Anyways, bad idea to place the printer WITH resin inside it AND SEE THROUGH WHICH DOES NOT BLOCK THE SUNS RAYS, right up the window WHERE THE SUN CAN BE SEEN.
I found your Grumbot video by chance yesterday after watching a Hermitcraft video. So I sub'ed and liked and set to putting this video and others on my 'to watch' list. I just love how you brought to life Gem's castle. It looks great. Love what you're doing. Still have to do a bit of catching up on your Minecraft and Medieval videos. Can't wait to see how you did that leather armour. Loving ya style Jess. You have that funny pleasant personality that is so adorable. You remind me of Gem and Pearl mixed together.
my gosh this is incredible!! how much i wish i could have my own print(s) of my favourite hermitcraft builds watching gem's elven palace bloom through season nine was wonderful, absolutely one of, if not, my favourite of builds 💚
Nice work! By the way, to reduce the mess, you can usually fit the resin build plate into the wash bucket upside down, then run the wash! Then you don't have to pry a goopy resin covered build off the plate :)
And you can leave all those supports on during the cleaning process too! Just print, place the whole thing in the wash bucket with lots of IPA, then run the cycle. The metal basket for the wash bucket should have a couple places to rest the build platform on
ah the joys of 3d printing. that came out incredible! ive never considered 3d printing anything from minecraft before. i can see why. props to you on sticking with it and being patient enough. i probably wouldve gave up after a day lol
i have been dying for someone to create a mini version of the hermits bases or minis in general so this makes my day. i love it and i also hope that your next challenge will go by nicely.

That was absolutely amazing to watch, GG on the effort you put into that. I honestly had a chuckle at the dirt part, I was like be like Gem and trust the process just two seconds before you said it yourself. For a first time watcher, honestly was brilliant. Thank you for sharing it with us.
My first video ever and I ALREADY LOVE YOU! So funny and pretty and Determined personality AANNDD A GREAT RESULT IN THE END! You earned my sub lol, keep it up!
Absolutely amazing! Definitely subscribing! I haven't sifted through all the comments so I'm not sure if anyone's said it before, but: I recommend glueing parts together before curing your resin. That way the parts line up perfectly before the cure warps/shrinks things in a way that might make that harder later on.
A good tip that I do is to head up a little bit the build plate using a hair dryer and also is good to use a scraper that comes with the printer, just blow some hot air in the direction of the part of the print that is touching the build plate than use the scraper slowly pushing the scraper underneath the printed object.
Hey I know you said you just discovered that miniature painting as a hobby existed but I’d definitely look into getting the proper respirator and filters for that airbrush! If you plan on using it long term the paints you use might give you lung complications if you don’t handle them properly with all the spraying. Great video and nice work though 👍👍👍
Just letting you know I would not recommend leaving your printer in direct sunlight because it will prematurely cure some of the resin which could lead to your supports being way to attached to your print and the surface being uneven which can lead to fitment issues. Awesome job though it looks amazing (I do not have a resin 3d printer but I am doing research so I can buy one so I do not have hands on experience so don't trust me 100%)
1st time watching you, and 12 min in when u talked about the main idea of the video not even started yet made me realize that u make it interesting. Subbed
OH MY GOSH ITS ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS!! I love seeing the full process, it makes me a lot more confident in my own crafting process. Love all of your videos so much, you are a huge inspiration of mine.
Amazing video! The print looked amazing and the painting really brought it all together :) In the future I would definitely recommend getting a respirator and keeping the printer next to an open window (If that's not the case already). Resin fumes are very very bad for you so being safe with a resin printer is super important!
Oh well, I wish I found your video 2 weeks ago... I searched for exactly that for a while xD Some advices on printing though (You may know these things but maybe not so it's always better to say too much xD) : - Hollow your models in Chitubox (once they're fully solid) with the button "hollow" on the top, it will basically make a shell from your model and save you a ton of resin. You have to make holes with the "dig hole" button to make it works (so there's no resin pool inside). It's hard to explain but I found a lot of tutorial when starting, should be easy to find :) - Print it at an angle to avoid the print sticking too much on the plate ,or on the FEP (the plastic film on the bottom), because the suction could cause it to deform or worse, puncture. - I find removing the supports easier after washing with alcohol+ a small bath in hot water, and before curing. And on the painting (bc I'm one of this "painting way too small figs" nerds) : - The dark to light approach is the easiest, very good call ! You could try a middle basecoat and then highlights and washes too, but washes make things less clean and more grim. You could also try the "slapchop" or "grisaille" approach, wich is using a black to wight gradient and then putting some very thin uniform paints over to give it colors. - To avoid paint pooling like at 21:54 (i'm cherrypicking), try and do multiple thin coats and let them dry between each, even if it starts by looking bad bc the paint is see through. - To make details easier, there are some very very fine brushes that could help. - Making the prints hollow could allow you to try electronics/LEDs, it sounds complicated at first but it's not, and Wylock's Armory made a really good vid on it called "The Comprehensive Newbie Guide to LEDs in Miniatures Terrain". - I encourage you to print and paint some figurines, especially if you like some characters it's so cool to see them like that ! And there's plenty of website like Thingiverse, Cults3D, myminifactory, yeggi etc that offer free stls Anyways (sorry for the enormous text), IT'S SO COOOOOL !! I just discovered your channel and I'm just gonna watch every project xD
havent seen any other of your vidoes so dont know if this is your "normal" sounds but the sound design in this video is amazing it really ties everything together
This was really neat, and real cool to see the process and roadblocks you had with learning how to use the resin printer! Can't wait to see what's next!
This looks amazing, I've wanted to learn to do Dioramas and that kind of thing, that's so much work but I'd say well worth it also have to say perfect timing with the new Season of Hermitcraft starting Saturday (February 3rd)

Now this is impressive!
Good job! I also like how you used the music depending on the Hermits base you're working on ^^
Greetings from the Warhammer 40k Fandom! We paint mini's all the time, it's a lot of fun once you get the basics down! You did great with this project!
This is so unbelievably cool! There’s something wonderful about having a physical piece of a digital project
The Gem intro music at the end REALLY just adds that chef’s kiss touch
I got to the point where you realized that right after I commented lol
Air-dry clay separates quite easily from resin prints, but superglue and baking soda is a better medium. (Wear a respirator though!)
I'm not trying to backseat, "oh, hurrr durrr, redo the whole thing", just friendly advice for next time!
a bit more on this: the method I mentioned basically welds the two printed segments together, but it sands really well, so it's easier to reshape and sculpt than cured resin, which is relatively soft.
I won't lie, I think you pretty much did a crash course on 3D / 3D printing with this project. You're a beast chief !
You did so good! Definitely subbing!!
either print with a raft which is basically a angled edge so you can get your blade in easier OR get something like a magnetic flexible build plate that attaches and detaches and you can just bend it a bit and itll pop the models off easier
I love that you used Howling as Background Music for thw Scarland print! The Result of the Prints is so awesome, I love them!
This looks amazing!! Also my vote for the next one is the 5am Pearl tower (with a mini Tilly and Pearlo to go with it)
What an awesome project!
An ENTIRE WORLD?
3d printing is so cool! Ive always wanted to do it
This is just an idea but, how about making the whole server as a miniature map irl. Like the miniatures you are doing but all put together to make a map possibly for DnD?
Watching Nerdforge in the background while working on a project is so real omg
just got your video recommended. Ill check out your prior work after this vdeo, but Im pretty confident, a follow here will be a good thing for the future to see more of this kind of content.Have a nice day
*TRUST THE PROCESS!!!*
Seriously though, I'm one of the peeps who met you through the Minecraft video, and realizing you made crafts on your channel I was amazed!
Also, you can heat up a room easing the printer and making it easier to remove it later on.
This is not promotional, but just in case for "people who don't believe" I will post just a short vid of me showing off my printer set up lol.
that's amazing! and i'm so happy for you that gem saw it! you deserve it to be noticed!
OMG!!! well done! I'm a big fan of Gem, she's the best. Thanks for showing your beautiful model!!
my gosh this is incredible!!
how much i wish i could have my own print(s) of my favourite hermitcraft builds
watching gem's elven palace bloom through season nine was wonderful, absolutely one of, if not, my favourite of builds 💚
I love the use of all the hermits building montage music, makes me smile :D Looks awesome too!
15:10 The shade being thrown at Mumbo 😂😂😂
every time i finish one of your videos i just feel so inspired. like, i wanna make a mini megabase!!! you just have all these cool ideas that i could've never thought up in a million years. a river made of hot glue?? thats so smart!!! keep making these awesome videos
This looks amazing as always! I'm glad you were able to perservere through the challenges you faced to bring forth this beautiful final product!
This is epic also love the super fast build mode at the Scarland part!
That was absolutely amazing to watch, GG on the effort you put into that. I honestly had a chuckle at the dirt part, I was like be like Gem and trust the process just two seconds before you said it yourself. For a first time watcher, honestly was brilliant. Thank you for sharing it with us.
This really put into perspective how 3d printimg isnt just "click the button and let the machine do all the work". The final produck looks amazing
This is so amazing! ❤️
My first video ever and I ALREADY LOVE YOU! So funny and pretty and Determined personality AANNDD A GREAT RESULT IN THE END! You earned my sub lol, keep it up!
Incredible work! Your perseverance through all the technical difficulties was so impressive. The final product looks lovely!
JESS? WHAT? EXCUSE ME?
THIS IS SUCH A BEAUTY!!! THE DETAIL IS SO AMAZING!! I can't wait to see what you make next!!
Looking awesome! Props! Deserves to be more known. Got my subscribe.
OMG! You are so insanely talented! I’m in an awe!
Great video and nice work though 👍👍👍
same for the resin printer
@@sonicdart3896 especially ANY liquid resin. That stuff will definitely give you more types of cancer than you can count.
Holy hell this was incredible!! I really enjoyed this video and the editing was smashing! Great job!
this whole process was absolutely amazing, it looks so good!!
Just letting you know I would not recommend leaving your printer in direct sunlight because it will prematurely cure some of the resin which could lead to your supports being way to attached to your print and the surface being uneven which can lead to fitment issues. Awesome job though it looks amazing
(I do not have a resin 3d printer but I am doing research so I can buy one so I do not have hands on experience so don't trust me 100%)
Loved the use of the Superfast Build Mode music during the Scarland Castle segment 😅
The print looked amazing and the painting really brought it all together :)
In the future I would definitely recommend getting a respirator and keeping the printer next to an open window (If that's not the case already). Resin fumes are very very bad for you so being safe with a resin printer is super important!
This looks amazing. And I love that your process was conveyed very much relatable. Great vid!
Oh well, I wish I found your video 2 weeks ago... I searched for exactly that for a while xD
Some advices on printing though (You may know these things but maybe not so it's always better to say too much xD) :
- Hollow your models in Chitubox (once they're fully solid) with the button "hollow" on the top, it will basically make a shell from your model and save you a ton of resin. You have to make holes with the "dig hole" button to make it works (so there's no resin pool inside). It's hard to explain but I found a lot of tutorial when starting, should be easy to find :)
- Print it at an angle to avoid the print sticking too much on the plate ,or on the FEP (the plastic film on the bottom), because the suction could cause it to deform or worse, puncture.
- I find removing the supports easier after washing with alcohol+ a small bath in hot water, and before curing.
And on the painting (bc I'm one of this "painting way too small figs" nerds) :
- The dark to light approach is the easiest, very good call !
And there's plenty of website like Thingiverse, Cults3D, myminifactory, yeggi etc that offer free stls
Anyways (sorry for the enormous text), IT'S SO COOOOOL !! I just discovered your channel and I'm just gonna watch every project xD
AMAZING JOB JESS!!!! It came out so well!
that's so fun! the look really does come out as minecrafty
What a cool project! My retention was certainly held through to the end, subscribed! :D
It turned out so good. Cant believe the dedication and persistence it would take to finish this.
havent seen any other of your vidoes so dont know if this is your "normal" sounds but the sound design in this video is amazing it really ties everything together
I dont know how i stumbled across this incredible channel, but I am SO glad I did! Awesome prints! :D
This video was actually way more helpful and understanding how to 3-D print something, then taking a day and watching like a billion tutorial videos
This was really neat, and real cool to see the process and roadblocks you had with learning how to use the resin printer! Can't wait to see what's next!
This is so cool i love making set’s
:)@TEX-MissJessLess-on-Te-le-gram
This looks amazing, I've wanted to learn to do Dioramas and that kind of thing, that's so much work but I'd say well worth it also have to say perfect timing with the new Season of Hermitcraft starting Saturday (February 3rd)
this is so amazing oh my god i hope this reaches even more people. you did an amazing job!!!!!!
