The Dreamcast era of games have such a distinct aesthetic that is so hard to pin point. It's vibrant, inviting, cozy and comfy all at the same time. As a kid you could get really immersed into its location and atmosphere. It's really dumb and I never told anyone but I've low key been searching for a place in real world that could give me a similar atmosphere.

Wow, I wanted to put this in words, but could never describe it. It was every genre too, I remember just being at awe by Soul Calibur. Graphics now are more realistic I guess, but with that comes a less colorful vibrant feel. There a distinct difference playing a dreamcast game, and other console games of the same gen.

The two extra pictures in Casinopolis are actually real life casinos. Presumably, the dev team had them as placeholders, and just never replaced them with in-game shots of Casinopolis.

Nah, several of the games' textures use real-life pictures they took with a camera. They're probably just some of those aforementioned pictures. Despite what people will say, Sonic was actually going for realism for years before '06 came out.

i have 30 hours of playtime on my steam version of this game (to say: i love SA1) but cmon dude thats a huge stretch. its a greatly flawed game that doesn't hold up to modern standards whatsoever. and everything outside of the sonic levels totally sucks

    • @CynicalScorpio
      @CynicalScorpio ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@Flameb0
Hard disagree. Tail's levels are just as fast paced, plus it introduces the racing element, and the added shortcuts, which incentivises the player to look for new routes that aren't possible with other characters.
With Knuckles levels, I always loved the scavenger hunt aspect. There's also the misconception that knuckles levels aren't speed focused, but they are, just in a non-linear fashion. It also incentivises you to explore the levels more in depth than you would have otherwise.
Gamma's is my favorite non-Sonic story. It's basically like the mech levels from Sonic Adventure 2, but with actually good controls. Less clunky and way more fluid. It's also one of the best written stories in all of Sonic.
Amy and Big's campaigns I won't defend as much, but they still have their charm.

I've always preferred the graphics of the Dreamcast version to the DX version. Sonic Adventure is probably my favourite Sonic game, & one of my favourite games in general with how it makes you feel every scene. The bright colours, the lighting, the environments, they made it to be as luscious as possible. One of my favourite moments of the game is just running around Station Square, jumping & spindashing for no reason, & watching the skybox. Didn't know about those secret rooms on the Egg Carrier actually, so I might go check that out!

Absolutely loved this video. Occasionally I go on journeys throughout re-playing this game, in which I always keep discovering the coolest things about it. Things I've never expected to see and have seen before! It's always better than the last. Like those machines at 5:00, I've never given them much attention, but now that you speak of them, it's really awesome they put in a detail like that! Or these flies at 7:12. Maybe I never seen them before cuz it's another victim of the DX port. Many others such as 12:40 the red things that go really fast as you've wisely put it, and I was only made aware of the robot maids recently too. I wonder what the doctor reads 12:57 ? Truly this game is one of the gifts that keep on giving.
This video has been exactly like one of those journeys... With the witty humor and the funny jokes, too. I cannot thank you enough. May all your days be happy, and all your endeavors fruitful.
(15:17 That's not Silver Sonic, thats an unnamed Sonic robot that one of the designers felt compelled to make as they were a big Godzilla fan. The robot is heavily based off of MechaGodzilla. The more you know. =) )
(16:42 These were pictures of 2 real life casinos Sonic Team visited sometime during their trips to Central and South America! Sonic Team used their photographs as textures in this game plenty, you can read all about it. There are slightly less compressed versions of those pictures somewhere, and people used them to deduce the real locations, I'm sure if you dig around you'd find them on Sonic Retro or something.)

Yes the dreamcast was the peak asthetic of the 90's graphics.
In those days I loved my Sega Saturn and I dreamed of having Virtua Fighter 3 it was promised for so long and then eventually it came out on the Dreamcast
It was really living the Dream having all those Arcade quality games like Dead or Alive 2, Soul Calibur, Sonic Adventure, Virtua Fighter 2, Sega Rally Daytona USA.
While I loved my Sega Saturn the Dreamcast fulfilled the promise of Arcade in the home that the Sega Saturn set out do but couldn't realistically port Sega Model 2 perfectly.

The Sega Dreamcast has a beautiful aesthetic. This is why I was sad when Sega was no longer a console manufacturer. I like Sonic Adventure's color pallette of blues, Turquoise and purples. Gamecube and PS2 ports of Dreamcast games made the colors more mute for some reason. Dreamcast has better textures than the PS2 and sometimes the GameCube,

Every time I played this game it was one of the PC versions so I was used to SADX's kinda odd and miss-matching textures, until last year that I was messing around with emulators on my phone and I decided to test the Dreamcast emulator with the original release of Sonic Adventure... and wow, it looks so much better when there's actual coherence in its art direction. I ended up playing through the whole Sonic campaign on my phone (with a BT controller of course, I'm not crazy enough to play a 3D platformer with touch controls) just to see the differences and I can definitely say that 90% of the changes made by SADX are actually for the worse, it's specially noticeable how they completely messed up the mood of many sections by brightening the color-palette too much or removing the colored lights for the sake of keeping the surface reflections consistent, it ruins the contrasts of the original. I have a suspicion that Sonic Team felt obligated to somehow update the graphics when porting the game to the Gamecube because of the time gap between the two releases so they changed stuff for the sake of it, and then we just kept getting that version in subsequent ports because that was the one that ran at 60 fps, even if that in itself breaks the physics and animations sometimes.

Bro that one little girl in station square, idk if anyone else knows who I'm talking about, but I get an impulse to try and draw her almost every time but I just know it won't be the same like the shiny lovely aesthetic the game makes the character model have. Idk what it is about this game, but I could sit in it's world's for hours... I swore I was the only one. Glad there's people who love to soak this stuff up as much as I do... I *REALLY* miss this artstyle and I'd love to see it back... Feels so arcade-y. They did such a good job. They retained a lot of the classic games charm/aesthetic while doing the absolute perfect evolution with it. Idk how they got it so right the first time. But I really want it back. Screw graphics, just bring this style back and only smooth what's needed with the extra power at this point. Realism is boring me at this point, bring back the stylish aesthetics.

I'm not sure why but I was always afraid of the 'Mystic Ruins' logo as a kid. Something about the bold text right in the center of the screen with nothing else in complete silence scared me. XD

Loved the video, just felt like I'd add some perspective on a few things, lol.
I think the "kid's room" in the Egg Carrier isn't for kids, but is actually for Eggman himself. Even since the early games, JP manuals and bios have described Eggman as being very childish. He's basically just a big manchild and made an entire game room for himself, lmao.
Also the "Silver Sonic" isn't Silver Sonic specifically, but likely part of the same production line as Silver Sonic. The big Sonic mech from Sonic 2 isn't actually called "Silver Sonic", it's "Mecha Sonic" (with the one from Sonic 3 being "Mecha Sonic Mk II"). This would be "Mecha Sonic Mk III", I suppose.
As for the Sonic Statue in Casinopolis, it's not entirely useless. The reason you can break it in Knuckles' story is because it can sometimes contain a Master Emerald shard. It's also possible to actually have it fully built in Sonic's story if you get enough rings at the pinball game.

There was one area that you forgot to mention, the Tails story desert sand boarding level, but yeah Sonic Adventure 1 is still my all-time favorite sonic game and despite how the DX port does make some areas look worse I do actually like that the starting area of Mystic ruins is brighter in color even if that may be a controversial thing to say.

12:28 Not too much to talk about in the 3rd (third) phase? When I was a kid, I couldn't figure out where this section of Sky Deck was. 15 years after SA was released in 1999 I realize the 3rd part of Sky Deck played with both Sonic and Knuckles is the Storage Bay between both wings and deck areas of the transformed Egg Carrier, the area inaccessible on the Adventure Field. The original game was supposed to include a computer model of the Egg Carrier to overlay the stage, but it was not included in the final product. The BetterSADX mod gives the player the option to add the EC model and Sky Deck looks much better with it. 👍
That's my 2 cents worth. Other than that, your video was very good and I appreciate the time and effort you sacrificed to produce and upload it. 🖖

If it wasn't for Sonic Adventure, I wouldn't have become a Sonic fan. I love its story, exploring its Adventure Fields and Action Stages, its music, and its variety of gameplay. Only part I didn't like was Big the Cat, but apart from his part of the game, it's peak Sonic and perfection.

I'm a big fat smelly dork. I really wanted to love Sonic adventure, but I think that was the point in time when Sonic became something for someone else, and was no longer for me. I really, really wanted to enjoy it.... However, I'm very glad other people find so much joy in the game. The love that Sonic Adventure fans have for the game and SA2 is really heartwarming :)
