So I gave SONIC ADVENTURE A Second Chance In 2022...

  • Sonic Frontiers season is upon us and it's time to dive into the catalog of great (or not so great) Sonic games! I decided to begin with the one that started this "Sonic Pilgrimage" here on Retro Rebound. It's the game that forced me to think differently of the franchise and pushed me into uncharted territory as I hopped from game to game. With all the Sonic Adventure energy I'm getting from Frontiers, I couldn't resist diving back in. Was it as lovely as I remember? Let's find out.

      Ocarina has WAY more glitches and nobody except weirdos says it's a bad game, I don't know where this stupid notion of a game having glitches means it's bad.
      Ever single game has glitches if you look hard enough, and in my opinion, as long as they aren't game breaking glitches have the potential of adding to the game.

      @@Glitchy1988 when the glitches affect the gameplay, it hurts the quality of the game. if the glitches don't affect the gameplay then people look past it. Sonic Adventure had camera bugs & control glitches that definitely affected the gameplay which is part of the reason why it doesn't hold up as well as Mario 64, which also had bugs, but not nearly as many. Sonic Adventure was rushed & made in 9 months. Mario 64 had a 2-3 year development & it shows. both classics, but one is clearly better than the other... compare Bowser's Fury & Mario Odyssey to Sonic Frontiers... same thing.

    My favorite part in SA1 has always been that girl waiting for her dad at the train station, day and night. You can easily start to feel concerned and sorry for her, and then when he finally shows up it's a genuinely wholesome and heart warming thing. It's this tiny little background element you could easily miss, but you feel emotionally rewarded for taking the time to focus on something other than what was necessary. I feel like Sonic games have been sorely missing that kind of thing since this game.

  • @Huarezz

    In all honesty, Sonic Adventure 1 is my favorite sonic game and will probably forever be. It's the first time that I've played a game of it's kind and the replayability of this game is so good. This was one of the first games that I got to play on my dreamcast as a kid and I still have vivid memories of spending hours to re-play stages and upgrading my chao garden. Given that I've been playing through Sonic Adventure once again on my channel as well, it is a joy to see intelligent content like this. Everything from your analysis of the manual and the box to the way you analyzed the gameplay was spot on. I genuinely feel the same way about this game. I missed when manuals used to have this level of craftsmanship. It was a joy to even spend time reading through them and see all of the character bios. SEGA felt like they truly cared about their characters back then, and heck, maybe even now with Frontiers on the horizon. While I doubt the movement of Frontiers will feel perfect, I am genuinely looking forward to it, but one thing's for sure, I am completely in agreement with you on Sonic Adventure's movement being peak Sonic movement. I literally even used it as an example when analyzing an earlier Sonic Frontiers gameplay preview! I also appreciate the fact that you referenced Sonic P-06's gameplay and movement as well, I love that game too and feature it often. P-06 truly captures what '06's gameplay was trying to do, balancing speed-platforming, combat, and exploration. This was also present in Sonic Adventure, and I truly hope they will capture that balance once again in Sonic Frontiers. Either way, you summarized it perfectly with the notion that games like Sonic Adventure and Sonic P-06 just feel fun to play, and at the end of the day, that's what's most important. I truly hope that SEGA and Sonic Team will start making games with this notion moving forward, but at this point, we can only wait and hope to see if they've managed to accomplish just this in Sonic Frontiers as well.

It's the kind of sneaky bad, where everything is just a *little* bit worse, but not so obviously broken where those not "in the know" just assume that's how the game is supposed to be. And it sucks because these minor hiccups caused by a bad port have tarnished the game's legacy, since the port is the most accessible version.

    • @gamingnubs7628
      @gamingnubs7628 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@GamingintheAM0801 it isnt bad. There isnt really 1 definitive version that is better than the rest. I could reproduce almost all the bugs I saw in DX on the original DC version. And DX allows you to skip cutscenes which is a GODSENT.

      @youmeltube ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@GamingintheAM0801 Well the port you're referring to is the PC port of DX, not DX itself. That port I agree is very flawed and breaks tons of what DX already changed.
      But DX is a fine version in itself. It did not "tarnish the game's reputation" at all - look at any review and they complain about things that were just as much an issue on Dreamcast as on GameCube.
      Bad ports have, to my knowledge, *never* tarnished a good game's reputation. GTA San Andreas on 360, Sonic Colors Ultimate on Switch, all the ports of SNES games onto Game Boy, and all the broken PC ports that Steam is filled with. Despite being more accessible, they haven't ruined their original games' reputation one bit.

    In sa2 in the treasure hunting stages you have to use the hints that's the main point of Sa2's treasure hunting there are three hints per emerald with the 3rd one telling u where it is. Sa2 has upgrades in every stage sa1 only has them in the hub worlds. The 100% completion expieirience of sa2 is better too every stage has 5 missions and their really fun too do. The bosses in sa2 you need to learn how they work and do them. Sa2 really is fun. It's more difficult than sa1 and even with the mech stages the lock on is the fun of sa2 get the a ranks. The stages are fun to master. I really want you to mod the game up cuz there is no dreamcast version update for sa2 so ur playing a butchered port of the game. Sa2 is much longer when going for 100%.
    I think sa1 has a lot of fluff in it tbh, I don't like the hub worlds. And most of the characters suck. You should give sa2 another shot
    But yea elaborating from earlier if you really like the sonix stages in sa2 try the extra mission like the ring lost Chao time attack and than the hard mode it adds a lot more content to the game if you were feeling its too short. The mech stages are fun when going for the a rank just getting a high lock on and the treasure hunting stages..., remember use the hints it helps a lot (maybe use the emerald tracking mod if you hate the radar that much

      I agree I feel like SA2 improved on a lot of things and streamlined a lot unnecessary things,SA1 is not bad but idk why people keep saying the hunting stages are worse when they're just not a cakewalk since SA1 hint system just tell you were they are, in SA2 is an actual hint and other than mad space and space herd it doesn't take that long to find the pieces anyways but people act like not having all 3 pieces at once is gonna make the stage 10 minutes longer.
      I'll take a SA2 3 times in a row over having to replay Big and Amy stories, I don't care if they're shorter but they just feel terrible to play as much as I love the adventure games

    For Big the Cat. I actually think if they wanted to lean towards the gameplay styles of SA2 in a SA1 remake, they should make Big play like Knuckles. As in, have him in a big-ish stage area using a beeper to search for frogs. I thought it'd be weird at first for Big to climb like knuckles, until I remembered he's a cat. :P And as for gliding, just have him glide with his umbrella. Sure it'd be pushing the laws of physics, but so do most of what Sonic characters do. :P

I personally want a primarily beat em up style for him, and then (to not leave out his signature thing) at the end of the level, you get a quick time event of him fishing for Froggy. Let's emphasize Big's determination/desperation to save his friend. Show that while he's a gentle giant that just loves to hang out with his friend, he is more than willing to get into the thick of it for his pal. I mean, either that...or just GOOD fishing mechanics 🤣

      @King Starscream I dunno, man. I don't hate the treasure hunting stages, but it's just flat-out stupid game design to have the third Emerald be right next to the first one, but arbitrarily not inform the player of this fact for no reason other than to make the level last longer. The SA1 style of treasure hunting was just better.

    • @Eshanthegreat
      @Eshanthegreat ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I personally think that having the radar was only necessary for 3 stages of the game namely death chamber,meteor herd and mad space because having the radar and the hint system would incorporate the same problem from sa 1 where you could easily cheese through those stages not to mention they lacking any depth also is a problem however in sa2 the game relies far more on mastery of moveset,quick traversal, player's ability to notice even the minute details the level has to offer rather than just gliding around aimlessly to make the radar blink and as for backtracking i really don't have issue with it since the character in question is really fast which means he could reach a place far more easily than many platforming mascots out there But hey that's just my opinion

      @@WasifBoomz If you're doing that then you know what you're doing, if you know what you're doing you don't need the old radar. With the bs the Sonic and Shadow stages (and even the car stages) expect you do for A ranks, complaining about the radar seems like you're being a crybaby tbh.
      The 5th mission locations are fixed anyways and in every stage except for mad space and space herd you can quickly run thru every piece of a stage in a few seconds not to mention the hints don't prevent you from getting A ranks so idk why people complain so much about the radar, it's not gonna take you 20 minutes to finish a stage, not even 10 honestly.

    If they do remake Sonic Adventure, Big has to be included, but just as a minigame. Give him more areas to fish in, Mystic Ruins, Lost World and the Egg Carrier being the likeliest candidates, and have a whole fish-dex or something, that would be a good time, but he would not be a mandatory part of the game anymore. You can't just scrap him as he's as big a part of this game's legacy as everything else.

    I don't feel like there's just one correct answer for where to go forward with controlling Sonic in 3D. I think a number of different games got a number of different aspects right, and figuring out how to bring the best of it together in a way that feels good and satisfying to play is the real challenge to focus on. I'll go over my opinion on how Sonic was handled best for an idea on how my ideal Sonic game would play.
    Adventure feels really good when you're going more slow, giving you a tight sense of control. I think later games have a lot to learn from how Adventure handled it's slower movement speeds. Unleashed and Generations I think are peak Sonic when going really fast. I can live with or without the boost itself, but I think the drift and quick step with the more linear hallways are a great way to handle the faster sections of the levels. Lost World's Multi-Homing and Spindash are really good, though the spindash could use some more classic physics for launching off slopes and should allow for curling into a ball while running similar to the classics. Heroes' Triangle Jump is fun to use at times, and Shadow the Hedgehog (2005) I think handled rail grinding the best.
    For everything Sonic 06 got wrong, I think it had more or less the right idea in regards to main levels and mach speed sections. Strip the loading screens in-between and transition from a more Sonic Adventure type playstyle to a more Generations inspired one with Drift and Quick Step, and sprinkle these sections throughout the levels rather than only as a big finale at the end. I'd say the transition between slow-medium speeds and "Mach Speed" should be used instead of a transition from 3D to 2D sections, only using 2D sections briefly for when a certain camera angle is being used and you don't want the player to accidentally get themselves killed. Generally, I feel the best way to pull off 2D sections is for the player to not realize they were ever in one to begin with.
    When you're not in a "Mach Speed" section, you should still be able to go somewhat fast, with an emphasis on classic momentum physics not just built into the controls, but also the level designs. You should be able to use this to not just take alternate paths, but all kinds of hidden secrets and rewards for skilled gameplay.
    And of course, the Adventure games got Sonic Storytelling very right, with other noteworthy examples being the Rush games, and the Storybook series. Story may not be important to gameplay, but it does contextualize gameplay which does a lot to enhance the experience. It's like the ketchup on top of the hot dog. It tastes fine without it, but let's be honest. It's just not the same without it.

      There are many ways to do a 3D Sonic game, that part is not really the question. But for what they should move forward with, I feel as though the Frontiers Open Zone-controls and handling are a very good base to build on since it works and it fresh in everyone's minds, even if the physics may need to be tweaked still.

    8:25 It's always interesting when I hear people say that Unleashed and/or Generations is the best Sonic felt playing in 3D because I just personally don't agree with that whereas for me, the best Sonic felt was in SA1 and SA2. It's always hard to explain this but I just personally loved the "free-ness" of how Sonic moved an controlled in SA1 and SA2 where you could move him in a 8way type of way and it felt smooth like butter compared to the boost games like Unleashed and Generations where Sonic feels stiff as they want you to move in a straight fashion in order to fully utilize the boost feature. And I do get it, if they implemented the boost feature with how Sonic controlled and felt in the Adventure games, it would lead to a lot of deaths and frustration.But I dunno, that's just how I feel and I wish for one day we can get a newer game that uses the adventure controls/feeling in terms of how Sonic controlled again.

    • @lpfan4491

      It depends on the preference. My personal favorite Sonic has played is Unwiished because of how well designed the drift and the boost are in the context of the leveldesign. But when one just moves normally, that incarnation of Sonic is way too stiff.
