  • The best way to improve a sales powerhouse is to add more power. Now running with a turbocharged engine, the 2017 Exclaim model makes the boxy-on-wheels Soul more satisfying. Tom Voelk reviews the 2017 Soul Exclaim.
    Here's a link to the non-turbo version from a few years back- • 2014 Kia Soul Exclaim
    Here's a link to the Soul EV- • 2015 Kia Soul EV Car R...
    About Tom:
    Tom Voelk is an award-winning automotive contributor to The New York Times. His podcast was the first to win an Emmy Award. He also married way out of his league. Now, stop reading this promotional copy bragging about Tom's photography and editing skills and watch a couple episodes. It's much more interesting.

    During a recent vacation, my rental car was a Kia Soul. My initial negative thoughts about its unusual looks were immediately replaced by how well this car drives. If you can get past the unconventional looks of this car, it really is a fine vehicle. It handles beautifully and has a very nice interior.

    The original Scion xB was quite popular from what I remember. Then it got... big.
    Soul is maintaining its relatively nimble size.
    Nissan Cube was probably too weird for most people.
    It must be nice to have no competition for once.

      catsspat The first gen xB's were awesome then when the came out with that ugly 2nd gen design turned me off to Scion. Car designs just keep getting uglier and uglier I'm glad Kia has only tweaked the soul but it definitely needs AWD on that chassis especially for the price of the fully loaded version.

    Regarding; "Seats are well bolstered and wide", I read a few years ago some of the import brands had started putting wider seats in their cars due to American's wider girth. I remember your wife bought a Soul, since I won the Driven hat. My wife was traveling all over Texas for a while, she was impressed when she got a new Soul at the airport rental company, with how easy it was to load and transport luggage from the airport to the hotel, and then how roomy it was for 4 adults to go to dinner, or lunch. I keep thinking of the Soul as a boxy Chrysler P T Cruiser ( a car I wish they had updated and continued to produce).

    I was a big fan of the trackster concept as well, but I never noticed that slight design difference in the rear hatch. That is a more attractive design element on the trackster. As a proud original owner of a 2010 KIA Soul Sport with 88,000 miles, I'm kind of waiting to see what the next generation will look like. An AWD version would be nice, but Seattle snow-phobics should know that I put Blizzaks on my Soul at Thanksgiving time and they handled my parents' frozen luge course drive way at Christmas time quite well. So don't think you need AWD, snow tires and FWD acquit this vehicle well.

    Not my cup of tea, but Kia certainly got the mix right with this car. I know several owners that forgave the looks because of the seating position and equipment that Soul offers. It is hard to argue with what you get for the price.

    This may seem a bit strange...but my wife thought she wanted a Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4 . But when when we drove both they seemed a little larger to her than expected. Would this be a good option? She wants a car with good safety and one that "feels" like an upgrade in smoothness, quiet, and overall quality. OR, is this still more of a budget option compared to these other two cars? Thanks.

    • @DrivenCarReviews
      @DrivenCarReviews  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I use a bunch of them. It's like paint brushes, the right one for the right job. My main camera is a Panasonic AG-HPX3700 P2 camera (looks like a pro news ENG camera). Slider (Kessler Stealth) shots are done with Sony A99 DSLR or RX10 Mk3. Interior and on car shots are GoPro Hero 3 and 4. Often I use my iPhone for the gauge shots. If the weather and location is right I have a Phantom 4 drone. I also have a DJI Osmo that I plan on using in the coming weeks. I edit on Final Cut X.

    • @TinLeadHammer
      @TinLeadHammer 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you use ENG camera because you already have it and got used to it, or there are things that it can do other cameras cannot? Or it does those things faster and easier? Or produces better picture (I don't think NYT requires 4:2:2 @ 50+ Mbit/s)? Could the RX10 Mk3 do everything if you did not have the HPX3700 ?

      That's what makes no sense all these new cars and no awd with out paying a premium. The soul for me is the perfect platform for awd. Why kia hasn't thought of it is beyond because I love the soul, and am in the market for a new vehicle and that's my only negative for the car and makes me consider another brand or a truck honestly.

    How did your wife like this Soul? Did you let her test drive this one? The specs say that this Soul turbo weights 3200 lbs. Did you feel this car was 400 lbs heavier than the 2.0L, and is it worth trading up from the 2.0L?

      I was about to ask that question.

    • @DrivenCarReviews

      She likes hers better because it's slightly smaller and she prefers the older edgier design (as do I). She would love to have the ride quality of the new one though (and I would like to have some steering feel. Hers has zero). Hers rides rough, a common complaint of the first gen.
      In Seattle where the streets are often wet and slippery, the extra power would sometimes be wasted as the tires would just slip. But I'm all for more power, especially the low end torque. It's been a while since I drove this car with the 2.0 so I can't really speak to the weight there. But if you're talking about the first vs.second generation, there's a noticeable improvement in the ride quality and structure feel. The second gen is much more solid.

    Kia Soul = Toaster with wheels. 'Word of advice: if you rent from Advantage, do not ask for a mid-size car without letting them know you do not want to get stuck with this piece of crap. For traveling, you will not line up your luggage sideways- because most of us with kids also carry a cooler for the road. You will not have enough space behind the back seat on this thing.
