    The independent rear suspension would add about ~$1500 to cost, but the manual would save ~$1500, so it'd be a wash. The MSRP of $22,800 honestly would seem reasonable.

      @51StPi 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      IRS is not that expensive, in Europe VW put different rear suspension on Golfs and Leons with different power outputs, you could probably half that cost, its just the bean counters are that tight, and people are more impressed by soft touch plastic rather than NVH.

    A well done turbo does add a lot to driveability. As for a Soul Sport? Maybe that is one thing they could do and it would probably sell OK, but a bigger bang for the buck would be AWD. They really need to do that first.

    • @georgelurye6274
      @georgelurye6274 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wouldn't invest in a purchasing a turbo from Kia. Just don't think it would be a good resale value down the road and the added maintenance would be prohibitive, but this Soul would be good with an independent suspension all around, an AWD and that 2.0, if they could add the 7 speed dual-clutch tranny. However, I suspect the Soul will be dropped or redesigned very soon.

    The torsion beam rear suspension is the sole reason I won't buy a Soul. So, if Kia actually put in the independent rear suspension I would certainly pay 25K because it would make the Soul practically a perfect high riding and very utilitarian vehicle.
    Let me ask this question: How many high riding compact Suv's are on the market now? I think the Soul is the only one!

    • @georgelurye6274
      @georgelurye6274 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are PLENTY of high riding compact SUVs on the market. You mean high riding non-SUVs? The Soul and the Niro would be the only ones.

    Orange is awesome. So many colleges use orange colors. The media always talks about manuals because they do their test drives in scenic suburban roads but the real world is traffic. Most people deal with traffic and prefer automatic for their daily commuter.

    The "Sport" version existed in 2009 (as a 2010 model) - was a 5 speed and all-in with everything you could get was $18,500 - I had one and should have kept it. I have a 2018 Soul Turbo and it's better in every way except for the fun-to-drive of a manual. The suspension tuning was probably better 8/9 years ago too - Kia made mention that Lotus helped with it (don't know how much truth there was to it). Honestly the DCT works well and if I want something more "sporty" I'll buy a real sport car. The first gen Soul in Sport trim reminded me a little of the Omni GLH but compared to the GLH you can shift into second gear while making a left hand turn or don't have to worry about vapor lock in during a sweeper. Nostalgia has a way of helping us forget about how crappy cars were a couple decades ago.

    Regarding the fuel mileage on this thing. I would expect to see higher real world numbers. I just bought an Elantra Sport 6MT and even though the combined rating is 25, I haven't had a tank average below 32mpg yet. And yes, I do get on it from time to time.

    • @jbm0866
      @jbm0866 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hyundai/Kia of this era werent exactly class leaders for fuel efficiency, and a box shape isnt the most aerodynamic thing on the road. I'm sure in the real world you could beat the epa numbers, but it would require never engaging sport mode, staying off boost as much as possible and not a lot of urban stop and go traffic.

    My fiance loves hers with the 2.0. We've been thinking about what kind of car she would like in the future. She doesn't want another soul simply because all of their competitors have AWD. I don't blame her. County roads in the midwest get pretty tough to navigate in the winter

    • @djkenny1202
      @djkenny1202 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would get Forester. Our mid level fully loaded Premium, brand new 2017, was $25,800. Nicest car for the money out there. Reliability is top notch. Built like a tank. We get 33 MPG and it has the best crash tests results of anything in it's class.

      djkenny she's looking at possibly getting the Mazda CX-3. Very nice amd fun to drive. Not a whole lot of power but its enough. Still veru fun to drive as well

      Yeah, we only sold our 04 that we bought new this past year because a forward facing seat for a kiddo did not fit well in the back. I would have kept the 04, it had 155k and not one single issue. Nice car too. the new one is just even nicer. I am a forever Subaru fan. I am not sure the Mazda is as good a value or built quite as well, handle AWD excursions nearly as well, even though it could be a little more fun to drive.

    • @Ichibuns
      @Ichibuns 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I noticed that with the new iA/Yaris replacement. It remains to be seen if they can be as reliable in the long term. I have friends that have failures with mere 5 year old 40k mile cars from Mazda that has me a little concerned. The Yaris, with Toyota power plant, those things go 300+k

  • @jbm0866
    @jbm0866 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    My answer? Around $1500 over the base Soul turbo for a slight suspension lowering and independent rear. I mean, the parts are already available, Kia wouldn't have too much development cost or anything. Having said that, if I want a small box i'll get a GTI or even regular Golf. The rear of this car is just a little too upright, and the nose a bit stubby for my tastes..
    For that matter Hyundai/Kia already make cars that appeal to me more than this, they're called Elantra GT Sport and Kia Forte5 SX.

    I wish it wasn't an either/or proposition with the KIA Soul. I own a 2010 KIA Soul Sport and it was one of the first couple thousand brought stateside. I have been a huge fan ever since, but it had a 4 Speed Automatic, no direct injection and a rear end sprung like a Craftsman lawn tractor. KIA worked to change that car rapidly and by only 2012, all of those gripes were alleviated. Then 2014 saw a total redesign and now a Turbo engine and dual-clutch transmission in 2017. They can do no wrong, right? Well, a true fan is never satisfied. Why can't this engine and transmission be had on any Exclaim Trim? Why can't it be optional with the beautiful Fathom Blue painted Soul! with brown Nappa leather seats? That is the best interior/exterior combination they make.... As Celine Dion said, "My heart will go on."

    I would say no more than $3000-3500 more than what it is now. Yes , manual transmissions are cheaper. However one has to factor in tire and wheel packages along with beefing up other components as well.

    Oh how I long for the long gone good olde days *checks calendar* of 5 years ago when $22k for a decently equipped compact car with a turbo motor and 18" alloys seemed like it may be slightly too rich for the blood of young buyers.🙈🙈 As I write this in 2022 (quickly closing in on 2023) there are still stealerships who will slap a 19-$20k pricetag on a used 2017 Kia Soul turbo with 50k+ miles on the clock...and do it with with the understanding there will be no negotiation🙄

  • @woostersheer1
    @woostersheer1 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    From Kia's own stable I would get an Optima LX Turbo over this Soul. The Optima has a much more sophisticated chassis and suspension within the same price bracket. IRS on the Soul for a $2000 premium may be compelling. I would guess that there is a large audience that cross shops the Soul with cute utes and not the Golf, Civic hatch, 3 hatch, or the new Impreza, and Kia is very fortunate in that case.

    • @georgelurye6274
      @georgelurye6274 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      How do you figure it's within the same price bracket? The 1.6t Soul starts at $22,800 and comes with a billion standard features. The Optima LX 1.6t is bare bones at $25,590. That's a $2,790 difference and you get MUCH less.

  • @mikelepard6827
    @mikelepard6827 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    For Canada: The Elantra Sport is $24,999; the Kia Soul Turbo $25,995. Considering the Soul Turbo is already $1000 more, and the Elantra to Eltanta Sport adds another $9000... A Kia Soul Turbo Sport might be as high as $34,995. At $10000 more than an Elantra Sport, I'd say a Soul Turbo Sport would be a very hard sell, thus I'd take the Elantra Sport myself. I do think the Elantra GT N (or i30N) or Veloster N might come in at $35k.

    • @JTube571
      @JTube571 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not getting your math there. This Soul he reviewed is basically already a Sport, just needs the manual trans and the different rear suspension. The price difference would be a wash (as stated in a comment above) so the price really wouldn't change that much. Maybe $1-2k more.

    • @mikelepard6827
      @mikelepard6827 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      My fault on the math there, I was thinking Kia Soul Turbo = Normal Elantra. I think you are right (1-2k more) would be ideal.

    • @georgelurye6274
      @georgelurye6274 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think you understand how R&D works. You also don't understand how finances work. In order to produce that independent suspension, it has to be designed, which would cost millions of dollars. The transmission is already in the parts bin. However, how many cars would you sell if you put all that out? Would it make back the investment? No, it wouldn't. Like you said, it would just break even with the current car. Why would Kia invest millions and get not a dollar back?

      If Kia took the time to engineer and tune it right (as Mazda has done with the 2019-XXXX Mazda 3) the torsion beam wouldnt be an issue...especially on a car like the Soul which was never meant to be sporty.

    • @jbm0866
      @jbm0866 ปีที่แล้ว

      I dont have time in my life for a poorly tuned torsion beam in my life. As I write this my 2021 Mazda 3 turbo hatch is sitting in the garage with a torsion beam rear, and I only realize it's a torsion beam on rare occasions such as hitting a rough spot on one side of the road that also upsets the other side of the rear suspension. But even then its much better than other cars I've driven with torsion beam rears.

    If Kia would build the Soul 2 door Trackster or the AWD Trailster, I would expect it to be between $25,000 to $30,000. Heck, due to the boxy shape, I think Kia can add a pickup bed to it!. Well... it IS sporty because it handles pretty well and has a nice 0-60 and quarter mile. Does it look good? That's subjective. It's basically an SUV and for that, I think it looks good. More importantly, it drives rather fun, it's a breeze to drive in cities and easy to park and it offers lots of utility for a young family. Guess who buys most of these... car rentals and young families.
