    After 20 years in roofing, I've learned more from Grand Roofing than from my previous major roofing company. My employer only saw me as a laborer and refused to teach me the trade, fearing I might become independent and support my family. That's why it's essential to like and subscribe to the channel of someone who is generously teaching the trade for free.

    Money’s good, transparency is never bad. Both parties being informed about the exchange is great. You do a great job of educating everyone. Keep up the professionalism.

      I had a guy recommended by our favorite realtor. I'd have him back for repairs in a heartbeat and trust whatever price he quotes. Haven't had to do repairs, because he did a great job putting the roof on.

    I always have the Amish do my house and barn roofs.The last one was around 10 years ago. A 2000 sq ft two story house with an attached garage. They do very good work. About six or seven guys pull up in their buggies at 8am and they are done at about 4pm. They strip and shovel the old shingles off the roof and leave them on the ground for me to pick up and dispose off. My trailer and about a $400 landfill charge. I have all the materials delivered here for about $4000 or so (Owens Corning Duration). A days labor charge for 7 men was $1400. I gave them a $400 tip. Total cost installed in one day was about $6200.

      I hear more and more about Amish doing work for people. We don't have Amish around us as far as I know. I guess they have to be reasonable as they aren't going out and buying boats (land maybe but not often boats).

      @pcatful You're right. Like eveybody else they do have a tendency to buy things that they really don't need like way too many out buildings and because of low interest government backed loans they over pay for land.

    Like your content. I think the nails are zinc electroplated, a much thinner coating than galvanized. So rust happens more readily. Thanks 😊

    Money, good rule of thumb for the pipe boot centering head lap past pipe. I hate those Otey plastic flanges. I see a lot of them with the rubber boot starting to split in the back and replace them with the Otey aluminum flanges. I cement them down and if it don't "stick" at the bottom of the flange, i use galv wire lath screws.

    I recently purchased a house and wanted to inspect the flashing around vent pipes. Due to the pitch, I needed to use roof hooks on a ladder to keep from sliding down the roof. I used an extension ladder to reach the roof vent and sure enough, there were gaps which I sealed. After the job was done I noticed that using an extension ladder was a no-no because there was NOTHING to prevent the ladder from sliding apart and launching me off the roof. Oops!

    i agree with every said beside the drip edge on the bottom is an industry standard in lots of state and you're not allowed to overhang shingles in those areas as well such as Florida but keep up the good work and let's focus on the actual no brainer bad practices but remember to keep opinions out of it

    • @pcatful
      @pcatful 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think the apron instead of drip edge is well established, but in the south with all the heat, that's an interesting point. The problem is with drip edge, the angle is 90 degrees and this pushes up the shingle. Maybe you have angled drip edge down there?

      @@pcatful yes we have pitch specific drip but ive never had issues with the standard drip either as long as there sheeting come down far enough

    Hi Brian. Question - you mention laying down 1/2 sheathing to replace the 3/8. If doing a totally new roof replacing the all sheathing - would you still suggest 1/2 or 5/8 inch plywood? (not OSB) (PS "Money" to let you know I watch to end ... but not really wanting to know the estimation process)

    • @GrandRoofingInc
      @GrandRoofingInc  วันที่ผ่านมา

      Plywood is definitely better than OSB but money can be tight for people so that’s why I typically figure OSB in my area. Although just this morning , I did add a note section in the line item that they could upgrade to plywood for just the cost difference.

  • @MichaelSynovetz-hd4bs
    @MichaelSynovetz-hd4bs 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Hit those pipes with some flashing cement, make sure you put the rag in there. On the soft plywood area, I would put some aluminum coil or tin with some ice and water under the shingles. You can never guarantee a repair, just do something to stop the leak then give the owner a business card with a price of a new roof.

    It is always about the money and despite the well worn "you get what you pay for", you seldom do.
    Anyone can claim "superior" or "qualified" or "experienced" but at the end of the day, only time will tell if the roofing was applied in a workmanlike manner.
    Meanwhile, the house may have changed hands or the installer has vanished or ?
    Metal roofing, applied to standard, is excellent and long term but is always overpriced. There are fewer installers for metal roofing so less competition and that is part of the issue.

    I like to hear about the what it cost in money.
    For a contractor just to come out what do you charge?

    • @pcatful
      @pcatful 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah good question. I find in my work small jobs or consulting are hard to nail down. Someone like Brian is very busy and to add another trip in his day. I think it would be at least his two hour labor+ overhead. Someone around the corner could be less. And then when trying to drum up business it's actually no charge. Hard to say. I'm a designer. I'll talk to people for free, but once I get into a job it's hard to quote a tight low number as it can take a day of my time and lead to nothing more. Quoting full projects is easier. I've done a lot of preliminary work over the years and got nothing for it. In those cases people realized how expensive construction is and got cold feet.

    It’s not always easy to color match especially if a sales guy sold the job and then a repair guy had to go out and fix it because the sales guy might have put a color down that wasn’t exactly the color that needs to be matched and then the guy comes up to make the repair and has the wrong color so it’s not always that simple

    When you reroof a 2’ on center with 3/8”, do you deck over the whole thing typically?

    • @GrandRoofingInc
      @GrandRoofingInc  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Pretty much anytime we tear off a roof that has 3/8 plywood, it's in bad shape. We never deck over. We always remove it.

    insurance aint gonna cover everything. many times its 1 or 2% deductible. So on a modest 300k home, thats 3 or 6k deductible. unless the whole roof needs replacing (which seems like is all roof companies want to do because $)

    First time home owner here.
    I had someone quote me on new roofing for an 1800 sq foot house for $20,000.
    They said it's a little more expensive than other companies might charge but it's supposedly worth it because their work and materials are superior.
    Is that reasonable or are they trying to pull a fast one?

      1,800sf house, probably about 2,340sf of roof or 23.4 squares if avg. roof pitch. Here in expensive CT that would be a min. of $21k to strip 1 layer and install new asphalt shingles with required ice/water shield. Not sure where you are located, but, get some bids and some recommendations from people you know.
