Solid Vid, Great picture. I liked how you mentioned always look at the inside, of the outer primary cover for damage and or some type of wear or tool marking, Great advice.
Thanks I appreciate it. Yep when I first started the job I thought it was just the o-ring leaking, once I got inside I could see it was more. Thanks for watching
I intend to keep making them. Trying to pass on what I've learned so you don't have to take your bike into a shop for something you can fix yourself. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for the comment, your absolutely correct. Anytime I've found silicone someplace it doesn't belong it's been a temporary patch to get you home or a butcher job. In this case it was a butcher job. Thanks for watching.
I have an 08 ultra classic. The inner primary seal was leaking and I let it be for a while. Then my charging system went out so it was time to get in there and replace the stator along with that seal. I took it in and got it fixed, and now the outer primary has been leaking at the gasket ever since. The back three bolts, that seam is seeping. I took it back, the mechanic replaced the gasket with a better quality one, didnt work. Leaked immediately. My question is, can a primary case warp? Or maybe theres cracks like this guy had? But there never was an issue before until we took it apart to replace the stator etc. Any info would be helpful. Thank you so much
Thanks for the question, the answer is yes the inner and outer primary can warp. It is possible there's a crack someplace but cracks are usually caused by over tightening or in the one I videoed something breaking and thrashing around the primary which is not the case with yours. If it went to a Harley dealer for repair when the inner primary was reinstalled they would've used the big oring instead of a gasket. See Primary leaks part 4. The way to check it is completely clean the inner and outer primary underneath so it's try and let it sit. Wherever the leak is it will start to seep and oil will not have traveled back along either the inner or outer primary. Pay special attention to the inner primary where it bolts to the engine case, usually that's where the leak is and the oil travels back along the bottom of the primary making it look like the leak is someplace else. Hope this helps you. Thanks for watching.
I've found that when re-installing the outer primary, it helps to use a couple of 3/16ths dowels along the bottom bolt-holes to keep the gasket in place. Nothing more aggravating than having a massive oil leak from the bottom of the primary because the gasket slipped.
Is this why my gasket is leaking? Ever since my mechanic opened it up to replace stator and inner primary seal, it's been leaking ever since at the bottom 3 bolts seam closest to the rear wheel
@@zachmercado1303 Try using a Cometic gasket. They're pricey, but the best (over the paper-type), b/c they're a thin aluminum that's rubberized on each side. They work great. And double-check your drain plug isn't the culprit. I've had that last three bolt leak problem before. Good luck.
@@billcarp3523 will do. I'll be digging into it tomorrow. I appreciate the tips. Fingers crossed its nothing like the poor fellow in this vid with cracked primary
Yep someone definitely over tightened the drain plug on the outer primary which cause that crack. The other cracks were caused by something thrashing around inside the primary.
I have a 95 ultra Glide classic I'm thinking of putting screaming eagle clutches in there I'm told that there will be two metal rings in the clutch assembly do not put them back in is this true? hoping you could help and thanking you in advance
Unfortunately I can't tell you one way or the other. I've never installed a screaming eagle clutch. But that is the first time I've heard that. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful. Thanks for the question and watching. Ride safe
Question: The primary cover on my '11 Heritage is stoved in between where the bottom 2 derby cover bolts are by about 1/16". Any chance I can take the cover off and coax that warp out so my derby cover doesn't leak?
Thanks for the question, I've not had much luck getting dents out of outer primary covers. But it worth a try. Try heating it than use a flat piece of wood and try and tap it out. But be careful the primary cracks pretty easy. Hope it works out for you. Thanks for watching.
to take out the inner primary case you dont need to take off half what you said to just replace the inner and outer cases or am i. missing something as i have done this as well on my bike
Mighty timely, just took off outer primary on my way to replace bent shift link thru the inner and outer primary on a '98 FXD very quickly came up with small setback. The clutch pack doesn't want to easily slid off the main shaft like the comp on the crank! Is that a taper/key or just a spline on the shaft/basket? A little puzzled.
Thanks for the question, it's just a splined shaft. Sometimes when the clutch basket has been on it along time it sticks. If you use a 8" 3 prong puller you put the prongs over the starter gear and get a even pull on it and the basket should pop off. Just needs a little persuasion. Thanks for watching.
On my 95 Fatboy the splines ended up having some very small ridges on them. After throwing two friends out of the garage because they came at my clutch basket with a hammer and pry bars. I got the basket off by just working it back and forth, it took a little bit of time but just by going easy I got it over the ridges then carefully took a needle file and filled them down. Now she slides on and off real smooth.

Yes that was a Deuce in that video series. That bike is still running strong problem free. Glad you enjoy the videos. Thanks for watching and ride safe.
Agreed, but came to find out it was a dealership that did that. Than wouldn't stand behind their mistake. Which I find completely reprehensible. Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching.

I'm changing my main drive seal 20 a 2009 RoadKing because of a leak. Sure is nice to have the proper tools for the job.
Yep the right tools make the job easier. Thanks for watching
Good catch! I guessed the same thing right before you said it. That’s a mess.

Hey tinker I realy like your show on working with harleys

Silicon + Harley = Bad. Most Harleys I've worked on that had any signs of silicon was generally a patch job to cover up something. Great video.

Early 90 bikes had a silicone in parts of the primary from the factory.

Maybe they overtightened the drain plug to cause that crack to the case.

that primary cover came off way to easy
That's because the owner had removed the cover twice before I got the bike. Thanks for watching and ride safe

Harley leaking from primary cover? What are the chances? 🙄
Lol
Worst job on the entire bike. I've had my inner primary off 4 times chasing different leaks. Finally got it leak free!!!
Yeah I got to agree it's the most labor-intensive job there is on the bike

Over torqued.
Don't recall anything being over torqued on the primary but this was a year and a half ago. Thanks for your comment and thanks for watching.
Just looked at the video, your right drain plug was definitely over torqued. Thanks again for watching
The crack is not surprising due to the cheap aftermarket cover. But then again I don’t know if it’s aftermarket or not.
Nope it wasn't a aftermarket. It was a stock Harley inner and outer primary. Thanks for watching
