At 60+ yrs old, I took my first woodturning class yesterday. While I was previously impressed, I now have an immensely greater appreciation for the works of art you turn out in each video!
Good afternoon Mike. Not only do you come up with some very interesting ideas, you bravely experiment in front of millions of people (OK, thousands). Please keep keeping up the good work 🌞
Hello Mike. I really enjoyed your original “experiment” and have been looking forward to “part 2” - and it certainly didn’t disappoint! Your approach to this reminded me of an old science teacher I had many years ago. Her experiments were always eagerly awaited for the chance they would go wrong, despite her efforts to the contrary. One time she set the lab on fire and the class had to escape through the windows. Thank goodness health and safety became the norm. But you have produced something which is not only beautiful, but practical as well. Certainly a piece to enjoy for many years. And now I am looking forward to round 3 of your experiments. Have a great week.
Thanks so much Angela, my chemistry teacher was very similar, he was always making cool bombs for us to watch. One day he had a slight mishap with some chemical and the school had to be evacuated while the fire brigade was called lol 😀
Love seeing you "play" with new ideas. I learn something new in every episode, and you make it fun! Fun piece with a touch of Boho...though "the surface of some strange planet" remark made me laugh. 😁 Once again, mastery at work. ☺️
My first thought was to have two lamps, one bright white light on one branch and the other branch with the coloured lights, that way you have two switches depending on your needs.
Mike, I just love your creativity. As I have said before, it is a joy to watch. Here you went from one project and combined another to make a beautiful lamp with the flower bowl. And to think it was just a trial attempt at making this bowl and it turned out lovely. How wonderful it would be for young art students to see your videos. They would surely be inspired. Maybe there are art teachers watching who will do just this. Hint, hint.
Wasn't sure about the petals until I saw how it cured and then that little bowl of sunshine just put a smile on my face. I always enjoy coming on these explorations and experiments with you
Lovely cute lamp Mike , you confused my Alexa, "she" kept asking 'do you mean the living room lights' I don't know workshop lights', ggggggrrrrrrr 'Shut up Alexa!!' 🤣🤣
All of 'experiments' have turned out to be lovely and useful creations and you have learned from each one, so all successes! The last one looks a touch like a rose. I would call it the '"Joplin lamp" for The Rose Janis Joplin. I have a restroom in my imaginary house that has a hospital shower, a combination whirlpool-hot tub, a large soaking tub a sauna and a corner greenhouse, one entire wall will be glass bricks. I believe that lamp would be perfect as an accent/mood lamp on the dressing table! 😄😼
I love it, leave the color changing light in it. A thin resin pour takes longer to cure than a slightly thicker one, The flower lamp really is lovely Mike
Actually Mike I think all three of those resin discs were beautiful and would be practical too. I'm originally a wood machinist but I last worked a lathe some 40 years ago. Ive been a bus driver for the past 25 years. My lovely wife bought me a lathe for my 60th 4 years ago and I've had some fun with it. I've had some mishaps too but mostly re learned my trade. Your videos will undoubtedly inspire many people because you leave in your mishaps and even have a chuckle about them. I'm undergoing radiotherapy for cancer at the moment so haven't been on my lathe for a while, I am however watching your good self, Phil Anderson, whom I know you watch and many others. I love your work Keep it up Mike.
Thanks so much Kev, I hope the treatment goes well and you are back on your lathe soon. I will keep putting out videos for you to watch till you can get back on it. All the best and if you need anything let me know, Mike.
Look at how far you've come since you started this channel! You should be really proud of your progress, Mike. From "regular" wood turning to this weird, hippie wackiness (but I meann that in the best possible way). It looks SO good! Well done and I am looking forward to joining you on your future endeavors. 👍
Stuffed up one but knocked the other out of the park, loved the flower approach, way to go way outside the box on that one !!! Always a pleasure to watch you work !!!!
Mike I think I’ve said it before but if I didn’t you amaze me with your ideas. You never seem to let any work discourage you. The lamp is beautiful. Bravo my man. 😊❤
The Color Changing Flower Lamp is great fun (for a kid’s room?). Heck, I’d like it myself! I cast a clear anatomically correct (but smaller) human skull, set it on a turned piece of walnut for the platform/base, and put 2 color changing LEDs in the base to see the ever changing light show in the skull. It’s cool, and so is your lamp! Thanks Mike! Joe CA
Very interesting watching these experiments. I love that you show us everything, the issues, the failures... Next time, try pouring the rain in the larger cake mold bowl you got, and then insert the smaller cake mold bowl inside it. I've seen another wood turner do that.... Seemed to work well for the person. ❤
I also enjoy trying new things. As a matter of fact I have a video coming up that is fun and this is the first time I did it. It might be next Friday or I may wait for the following. Gary
So many people playing with resin but not so many people able to properly wood turn so I personally prefer the wood turning or even a combo of wood and resin work. Nevertheless the resin looks lovely...
The flower form is a great way to deal with the edge waves/wrinkles! I really like how the wood "stem" came out as well, really pretty. I was also surprised at how much I like the changing colors on the flower, I thought they would clash with the colors in the resin, but (at least on screen) I don't think they clash at all!
Mike this flower lamp bowl turned out beautifully 💕 My daughter even said she would love to buy it if it was available 😊 It might have also been cool to have left the outside a natural edge and only dished out for the flower bowl to sit? I love the different colors how they reflect though the resin. Great idea!
Hi Mary, this one may be for sale. I'm trying to work out the best ways to put some of my pieces on my website. If you email me your details I'll let you know if/when it will be listed (mike@mikeholton.net)
Very interesting episode. As someone who loves lamps i suggest considering the angle from which they will be viewed. Above (as you demonstrated) is an unlikely position. Also, lamps have to transform inner spaces so some study of that might be useful. I so much enjoy your creative projects so please don't take this as a negative criticism ❤
Not at all Jane and thanks, the light does work better than I hoped and does send a wonderful light onto walls. It is very hard to capture this one camera 😀
Wow, for the first time since I started watching your videos I didn’t get it, didn’t understand or could imagine your end goal. I am in awe! This was a total surprise!

Love to see you trying new techniques. Very nice flower, and I can picture the other bowl inverted for a planetary nightlight. Maybe on a nice bowl just to be different from this. Add some interesting bead design. Just a couple of thoughts thrown out there. Great work once again, Mike!
The wood base is really nice. The bowl shaped like a flower is awesome. Together it makes a wonderful piece. I do think a single colored pinkish light would make it better
The flower light is very nice. Can't wait to see what you do with the weird deformed "moon bowl", because I know you'll come up with something really creative to redeem it.
That was fun. I really like the idea of cutting the pedals in and overlapping, that was very smart and made a very good-looking flower pedal shape with the shaved corners. There is so much variability in the curing times, methods of coloring, type of mold, etc. This is kind of a nightmare project to film and present. I am very happy that you managed to make such a lovely result. I have a bunch of hollow stems from a shrub that my mother grows in her garden, I can't remember the name off hand, but the pith is basically sponge and can put pushed out with a piece of stiff wire and cleaned with a wire in a drill. I've always wanted to use these hollow stems to make a light fixture of some kind. And these resin flowers would look amazing in different shapes and sizes in a cluster extending from a turned base that holds the battery/cords, etc.
Thanks William, you are right about it being difficult to film . Those stems you have sound pretty cool and would make for a great project as you suggested. If you do it please send me pictures, my email is (mike@mikeholton.net)

Thanks Ray, I just want to let people know it's good to try these things, failing is learning 😀
