This week, I’m taking on a piece of apple wood that’s seen better days-it’s cracked right down the middle. At first glance, it seemed like it might be too far gone, but hidden in the heartwood is something truly special: a pattern that looks just like a rose. I’ll be doing my best to tackle the challenges of the crack while letting the natural beauty of the wood shine through. I’m not sure how it will turn out, but I hope you’ll join me on this journey to uncover the hidden rose within.
Thanks for watching and feel free to leave comments in the chat below.

we have a saying in our house "it's not trash till it's ash" so to see wood like this transform is a real treat
Thanks Tina, I like that saying 😀
Sometimes decades can go without using that saying…
😂
You are right tho
@@Solid_Jackson 🤣
That’s a brilliant saying! Thankyou for sharing! 👏👏👏
I appreciate the way you accept the ‘imperfections’ and allow the natural beauty of the wood to shine through.
Thanks Melissa, I appreciate it 😀
It's gorgeous. I love the simplicity. I love the color. I just love it!
Here's a smooch for Hooch 😘😘😘
Thanks so much Amie and smooch will be passed on as always 😀
That turned out so beautiful!♥ I love these odd shaped bowls that you make but I am always in awe at the way you turn the thing and don't mess it up. When it's turning so fast, it looks like you're hitting the wrong spots... but you aren't. I think "that's amazing" every time.
Haha it is a little strange to turn but you get the hang of it 😀
I have neither the tools nor the skill to become a woodworker, but I love watching you perform magic on a piece of firewood!
Thanks Sue, like anything else it just needs a little practice 😀
Hi Mike, again you have taken an old piece of apple. Then made it into a beautiful apple bowl. The finish enhances the bowl and give it a marvellous luster. Till next time. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Thanks my friend 😀
It's always a pleasant surprise when you do a live edge piece. I come in wondering how you will pull it off, but every time I come away delighted with what you have created!
Thanks so much Taylor 😀
I so appreciate ur following ur vision 4 this Applewood and all ur treatment of precious wood+++😊
Thanks Patricia 😀
Lovely! You take such an unassuming piece of wood and turn it into a thing of beauty!
Thank you very much Libby 😀
I think this piece of wood turning is amazing, and I really enjoy how you explain in every detail about the piece of wood you are going to turn and the banana fruit bowl is something completely different. Thank you for your wonderful videos
Thank you very much Trish, I really appreciate it 😀
I had no idea apple wood was so lovely. What a perfect piece for any room and another beautiful addition to your repertoire. Well done!! ☺️
Thank you very much Cynthia, to me it is a little like Olive wood 😀
I love watching your videos. Your hands seem to caress/cherish the wood. This piece is really good. I like the imperfections and the odd shape. I can’t wait for you to turn the other half.
Thank you so much Diane, I just love the feel of it😀
Ja , Apfelbaum ist ein schönes Holz. Hast du mal wie immer toll gemacht 👍
Vielen Dank, mein Freund 😀
Ooooh, apple! Makes me look forward even more to turning my neighbours pear tree. 🤠
Haha I hope your neighbour does not catch you cutting it down 😂
Beautiful wood, beautiful bowl. I have 3 apple trees in my backyard. Almost willing to cut one down for my son to turn.
Haha I have three as well 😅
That is absolutely gorgeous. ❤❤❤❤ Beautiful wood 🪵
Thank you very much Karen 😊
This is one of your top 5 pieces I think. I love when you make a simple shape and let the wood speak for you. And this one truly spoke volumes the way you got the natural lines lined up with the flow of the structure of the bowl itself. So beautiful, well done as always!
Thanks so much Dawn 😀
That apple bowl is fantastic. A few bug holes are not a problem, it's all part of the nature of the wood. I've been following you for quite a while now and you never let me down, thanks.
Thanks so much Steve, I appreciate it 😀
Absolutely beautiful piece Mike 👍👍👏👏👏👏👏
Cheers David 😀
When I was a teenager, I helped my uncle chop up apple wood from an old orchard (for firewood.) I recall it being very hard! We were using chainsaws and they got dull really fast.
The Howard's Feed & Wax gave it such a silky finish. Really, really beautiful 😊❤
Thanks Lornacy, it really is quite hard lol 😀
Love the piece. I’ve turned apple only once and it is one of my favourite things so far !
Thanks, I have turned it three times and I love it 😀
Nicely done Mike apple is such a pleasure to turn. I have been luck to turn some beautiful pieces in the past, again a great turn and a beautiful piece at the end,
Kind regards From Will 👍 😊
Cheers Will, I wish I could get my hand on more lol 😀
My son and I have debated on trying to turn some apple. After seeing this beautiful bowl, we are sold! Now we just need to find some! Haha
Haha good luck with the search 😁
Another Masterpiece Mike, your workmanship is awesome, love the finish and grain 👍😎
Thanks Brent 😀
Lovely looking bowl - I agree that apple wood has a great, warm quality to it! Can't wait to see what you do with the other half😊
Thanks Spike, neither can I 😀
applewood really is such a beautiful wood.. and i think your skills are many but your eye for curves in relation to the size of the piece shows how intune you are for beauty in the design.. much love xxc
Thanks so much Chris 😀
@@MikeHolton oh thankyou mike xx
Pretty little bowl…lovely grain and color…like the foot on the bottom…and the satin finish…👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you so much Loraine 😀
@ YW…have a great day…
I really enjoy watching and listening to you work. I love the way you are willing to try and do different things.
Thank you so much John 😀
Fantastic result, looking forward to the other half! 😊
Thanks Barney, me too 😀
After watching many of your videos. I still can't get over. How a grotty bit of wood. Turns out so lovely. I'm still amazed at the ideas you come up with. Just by looking at piece of wood.
Thanks so much Jonathan, I love turning wood like this 😀
Apple wood is so pretty. Love listening to your thought process. Learn a lot from you.
Thanks Chris, glad you find it useful 😀
That grain is amazing. I just love it. Has your stuffed dog a name. He is a very attentive student 😊
Thanks Cindy, yes he does, his name is Hooch 😀
Applewood never fails to amaze - it's a hard wood to carve but always produces something spectacular at the end - beautiful bowl.
Thanks my friend, I just love turning it, just wish I had more 😀
Beautiful piece. Was amazed at how you figured it out. 👊♥️
Thanks Brian 😀
Have watched a number of your videos from far away in South Africa. It's always fascinating to see the final bowls. Thanks!
Thanks so much Peter I really appreciate it 😀
I absolutely love this piece and how the grain runs the length! Apple is indeed beautiful!
Thank you so much!😀
Beautiful natural bowl. On Thursday nights I watch Phil Anderson on TH-cam he likes to do natural and live edge bowls. I too learn by watching and learned alot by Phil. Keep it up and you will be an expert someday
Thanks Arnold, it may take a while but I'll give it a go 😀
Absolutly beautiful piece of work. Turning that much air is still a bit outside my comfort zone, but im getting there.
Haha it's always fun, just give it a go, the worst that can happen is that you learn something 😀
And to think I started my wood turning journey making Natural edge bowls. Then went to spindle turning for Christmas ornaments
This bowl is superb! I absolutely love it!! ❤
Thanks Matilda 😀
Hello Mike, Thanks for sharing your work on the Apple. Lovely result and great workmanship. Thanks for sharing. Kind regards, Dave, Beachmere, Queensland, Australia
Thanks so much Dave 😀
Lovely piece that would present a challenge for many beginners. Your approach in deciding how to make the best out of the apple log was very helpful!
Thanks Elaine, glad you enjoyed it 😀
Thanks for another great, informative video. I love that you took both sides in different directions. I have an apple burl that surrounds the trunk of a small apple tree that was a Christmas gift last year. It's nearly dry and I'll be reviewing this video again before I start up the band saw... Thanks for excellent and interesting content!
You're welcome Tim and good luck with your piece 😊
That’s just lovely! I just love all of the different forms you make with so many different types of wood!! It’s just a joy to watch you bring each piece to life! I am not a turner, but I love turned wood!!
Thanks so much Barb 😀
What beautiful use of the natural characteristics of the apple wood! I can practically feel the smooth wood through the screen.
Thanks! It does look lovely 😀
I think that's my favorite of all the pieces I've seen you turn so far. It's the complete package: colour, grain, size, shape, smoothness, just all works together so well.
Wow, thank you! 🙂
Great looking bowl. I love the simplicity of it.
Glad you like it my friend 😀
Another beauty! Simply wonderful. Two thumbs up from snowy cold southern Allberta.
Haha thanks my friend, we had a snow storm on Saturday but it was short lived thank goodness 😀
Wow, what an amazing wood that apple is! Mindblowing grain to it. And the shape of the bowl would have to be one of the most pleasing things I have seen for a bowl of any description. In fact the word "bowl" scarcely does it justice, it's pure art that. Well done.
Thanks so much Nathan 😀
Your result in this bit of turning is absolutely amazing. I love the overall shape of the resulting open-sided bowl. I like the elongated ellipse and the cut-down sides because of the way the original piece had been cut. You made optimal use of the grain and natural features of the wood. It's such a handsome piece. I can just imagine what it would look like on a shaker table or some of the other tables that I saw and ate and worked at in my youth. So to wrap up, congratulations on a wonderful piece.
By the way, as an American, I really appreciate that you had support for this episode from an American group, the Woodworkers Guild of America. I'm definitely going to take them up on the discounted subscription. It is an astounding value.
Thanks so much for your kind words, they are very much appreciated. All the best, Mike 😀
Beautiful result, Mike. The grain and colours of apple!
Thanks, this wood is really something! 😀
Amazing as always - and letting us , the viewer, in on your decision making is brilliant
Thank you very much! 😀
Apple wood has gorgeous grains. That's one neat 24:06 bowl for decor!
Thanks so much Aleta 😊
Another fantastic piece Mike. I am currently rebuilding my workshop, and cannot wait to get back to turning. Watching your videos is a great inspiration and motivation to improve my abilities in woodturning.
Thanks my friend, good luck with getting it all set back up 😀
Brilliant. So nice to see a non round bowl too. I joined the WWGOA last time you suggested and it really is a fabulous deal with access to so many projects and knowledge.
Wonderful! Thanks Linda 😀
Thanks Mike 👍 Natural edge, hollow forms anything you come up with is great. Cheers
Cheers Colin, I appreciate it 😀
Really nice , going for the live edge shape shows off the lovely grain more 👏👏👏👏
Thanks so much Vini 😀
That's absolutely beautiful, fantastic turning
Thanks Mick 😀
Absolutely beautiful. I took love the amazing grain of apple. Well done!
Thank you so much! 😀
The best (size and grain) piece of apple I have seen. Mostly the bits seem to be rotted or split. Great job and another piece waiting.
Thanks Lewis, it really is hard to find a piece that has not split! 😀
Lovely Mike yet again and amazed how good apple looks even with those splits to begin with. Thanks 🙏
Thanks Mike, apple is a very hard and wonderful wood to turn 😀
I've never seen apple turned before, and that was absolutely beautiful! Thank you for sharing your talent
You're welcome Scott and thanks 😀
Absolutely love this piece, Mike. Apple and natural edge is the sort of turning I love.
Thanks for sharing 👍
Glad you enjoyed it Jon 😁
Just wanted you to know that your channel has given me courage to buy a lathe ,i am loveing turning wood, have had trouble getting people local to give me lessons due to my not having any time during day so i watch your vids and learned how to get started.thanks
That is awesome! Keep going, I'm 100% self taught as well 😊
So interesting, I'm still learning and was taught a whole lot more watching this. Thanks. Brian
Thanks so much Brian, glad it was helpful 😀
Beautiful piece and great comments on what your doing and how your doing it. Thank you for this video!
Thanks so much Andrew 😀
Oh wow!! I absolutely adore that Mike! It is stunning and one of my favourite pieces you’ve made! Wow wow wow!!!
Thanks so much Donna, I thought you might like this one, it's right up your street 😀
This is a beautiful piece you made and the apple wood is gorgeous. I've made simple bowls from peach before but I am now a fan of apple. Thanks for your video.
You're welcome and thanks Stephen 😀
...well, it's definitely the apple of my eye...!
Nicely done, Mike...👍
Matt
Thanks Matt👍😀
I love the look of this piece of applewood. You really have an eye for detail!
Thanks so much Linda 😀
What a nice save... Impressive, how you were able to pull such a nice piece off without using any Resin at all. I feel like this is probably the best aspect of your work to me, how you are able to find the beauty in the wood even if it's not in the best condition.
Thanks Hans, I really only use resin if I want to make something very specific that needs it to create the design. Otherwise I much prefer to let the wood talk for itself 😀
The grain and tone of the applewood is absolutely gorgeous! The bowl is very beautiful!
Thank you so much 😀
I just LOVE this apple wood bowl. 😅😅😅
Thanks so much Troy 😀
The grain on that piece beautiful. I find it so zen to watch you bring such beauty out.
Thanks so much Jason 😀
Beautiful. You never disappoint, Mike. I look forward to viewing your newer videos, and have been slowly catching up on your older ones. Watching your skills progress is nothing short of amazing.
Thanks so much Geoffrey! 😁
Nice chunk of apple with beautiful grain. Lovely natural edge bowl Mike. I've got a great piece of yew to work on at the moment with all sorts of colouration, hope it comes out as nice as your apple bowl.
Sounds great Colin, I love yew 🙂
Very nicely done! Thank you for sharing the discovery of something rather stunning, hiding away in the limb of an apple tree. 😊
Thanks so much Charles 😀
This piece is absolutely gorgeous. One of the best looking ones of late in my personal opinion.
Thanks so much 😀
The grain and the colour really made that piece stand out. Love the natural edge to it.
Thanks so much John 😀
Always a delight watching what you create! Great job Mike!
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks 😀
Another lovely piece thank you for the entertainment and display of skill.
You're welcome Simon and thanks 😀
I can see why you love Apple wood. That grain is gorgeous. ❤
Thanks so much, it really is beautiful wood 😁
I love all the fruit woods. They all got their charm.. This one you turned into a very nice apple bowl.. ❤
Thanks Wendy, me too 😀
Both pieces are stunning.. that burl vase is exquisite
Thanks Derek 😀
Amazing grain pattern. Another lovely piece.😊
Thanks Patricia 😀
Very pretty, it amazes me how turners of wood are able to keep a steady hand especially when the surface has gaps in them 🙂
Thanks Caz, it's all down to practice and luck lol 😀
I do love watching a master of his craft at work ❤❤❤
Thanks so much 😀
Another super piece Mike. Its beauty is accentuated by the grain and the uncomplicated shape. Well done, love it!!!
Thank you so much Kevin😀
Another triumph. I so look forward to Tuesdays. It will be interesting to see what you do with the other half.
Thanks Keith, it will indeed! 😀
Wonderful to see these gnarled pieces of wood turned into such things of beauty
Thanks so much, I love turning wood like this! 😀
Dec 25, 2024 12:38 PM. Enjoyed and learned from your demonstration with the apple wood. Inspired and learned how I can rescue some of my old orchard wood. Thank you.
You're welcome and thanks 😁
Thanks!
Wow thanks Matilda 😀
23:59 looks great. Very well explained on how to do it
Thanks David 😁
A perfect solution, cutting the piece along the line of the big crack!
Thanks Chen, it's the best way to get the most out of it without waste 😀
You have the knack of turning seemingly impossible into truly amazing
Thanks Bob, I'm a very lucky turner 😀
beautiful grain. I have always loved working with apple wood. I used to carve a fair amount of spoons from it and was always wonderful. Now I turn it whenever I have the chance. Ive always felt that the wood has a buttery feel once finished, and the way it naturally darkens over time is quite a treat as well.
You are so right Jordan it seems very similar to olive wood to me jut not quite as hard or as pretty 😀
@@MikeHolton unfortunately i have not had the pleasure of working with olive wood at all yet. i very much look forward to it though, because it really is gorgeous.
@@jordanarmstrong4839 I have only had a couple of pieces, amazing wood to turn 😀
What a lovely little bowl! The tone and the grain are gorgeous 😊
Thanks Tsering, I like it too 😀
Stunning piece as usual, would look great with some big shiny apples on display..🍎🍎🍎
Great idea Clara 😀
Beautiful color in this one Mike. Apple is one of my favorite woods.
Take care,
Gary
Thanks Gary, mine too 😊
A beautiful bowl love the grain, colour and shape, the finish is incredible. A joy to look at, it makes you want to stroke the surface with all those warming colours.
Thank you very much Margaret ☺️
