What a labor of love. Mike you are so special. This flower vase is just beautiful. I know that your wife will be really surprised with her gift and will think of you with all of the flowers that she puts in them in the future. Again, listening to your artistic sprit in giving the side of the vase ridges, makes this one very unique. And it should be.
The sparly white looks almost silver and a beautiful contrast to the blue. Your wife now has a georgious vase that no one else can ever have a duplicate of.🤗💚
Aw what a stunning gift for your wife, I don’t remember the last time my husband bought me flowers let alone made me such a beautiful vase to put them in! 😂 I really loved watching this be made 😊
Aww Mike this project meant a lot to you, right from the vase coming of the lathe my heart was hoping no more mishaps happened. Saying that though it did enter my mind whether you'd break the liner as it was nearby and low and behold ................................ All/s well that end's well though, and it turned out grand! Here's to many more anniversaries, holidays together and pressies, we all love a good pressie 🎁🎁🎁🎁🎁🎁 😃
Wow, that vase really made you work hard to produce a wonderful looking gift for Mrs H. The way you just get on with things when they don't go as planned makes watching your videos a good learning experience for the rest of us.
Well done Mike, great result, your wife will be delighted. Lovely to see your challenges and how you overcame them….always the best part of Woodturning!
Hi Mike. The vase is really nice looking. I love the way the glass liner just floated down. That's a very close tolerance you cut in there. Nice work. Ahh, no good deed goes unpunished as they say. I've had a time or two like that & sometimes it's just best to give it up for the day and start over the next morning. Reading your replies below & you're absolutely right when you say "There's no reason to get mad or angry." Stuff happens. I know your wife will love it. I'm currently turning resin blanks with flowers in them & the maker suggests a frequent application of thin CA glue to solidify the flowers as they get exposed when turning. It helps prevent divots and blow outs. It also fills minor pits in the flowers and stems that occur. Take care and keep turning. Bill Riley
Thanks Bill, that is a good tip about the CA glue, I have never turned a flower in resin before, sounds like fun. If you get chance can you send me a few pictures? (mike@mikeholton.net) 😀
Hello Mike. That is a lovely gift for your wife. I’m sure she will be displaying gorgeous flowers in it for many years, and they will show off your handiwork beautifully.
Great result! I've drilled a million holes into my pieces. I've learned through trial and a lot of error to gradually go up. If I want a 4 inch hole, I start at 1 inch and go up an inch until I get to 4 inches. Oh particularly hard wood I'll even go up a half inch at a time. It gives great results. It can be expensive getting that many bits but it's worth it. And never trust the factory edge on cheaper bits, sharpen them when you get them.
Thanks for the tips, this 95mm was a carbide tip which I may replace for a more standard type I know how to sharpen. If I do more I will buy the bits, certainly easier than hollowing 😀
Great story I love tiny that seeds that come from these cones turn into the biggest trees in the world. Lovely to see that it is not just me that has a string of mishaps along the way! Gorgeous result and what a reward for your wife as you spend so many hours in your “man shed” Or maybe that should read “person shed” 🙏
It's beautiful Mike! So worth all the hassle 😊. I watch Jim Sprague's channel, and my favourite videos of his are the cone and resin ones too. Was excited to see your take on it😍! (PS- what??? your supermarkets close at 6pm on a Sunday???? you need to move to Scotland my friend😂) PPS - have always wanted to see the Californian redwoods. The nearest I've come is the sequoia grove at the Edinburgh botanic gardens 🙄
The guy from Sprague turning uses an electric pan. Simply throw the glew sticks in the pan and melt them. Dip and stick what ever your gluing. I'm sure it's doesn't work for every application, but certainly would help with the frustration. Love your videos. Very calming personality and love watching the experimental stages.
This is what Art is all about Mike. Pushing the limits both with the materials you use & pushing your own limits. You are an Artist in turning. I personally am not a huge fan of resin but in this project it really works so well. Your colour choices for the resins was perfect with your selection of cones. The 'stepped' exterior turning was a bold step, but it worked so well on this piece. Add a great finish & your wife now has a beautiful vase. Cheers, Don from South Australia.
I've made two bowls with pine cones. I was a little bit frightened when you went straight to the 95mm forstner bit but, very glad when you reduced the size. I've a feeling your wife will be very happy with the vase
My deepest condolences for the glass sleeve and isopropyl. R.I.P. Mike, this was a great video. Thank you for humbly sharing your frustrations and disappointments. It shows better the true life of a wood turner!! I like your new video format showing different angles. I'm also glad your Tesco had another glass sleeve that fit like a glove. Your wife will be so happy. The blue and white is gorgeous!!
Thanks Matilda, so glad you enjoyed the video, I'm constantly trying to improve on everything I do to try and make the videos entertaining and interesting. Editing with 4 cameras takes a long time but I think it's worth it. My wife loves it 😀
Hey Mike, respect that you keep the struggles that you encounter during turning in, that makes you real😇. Sometimes it is ‘that kind of day’ that everything goes not as planned 🙃🫣. I love the design, something totally different and unique 👌. The colors are beautiful and indeed those cones are gorgeous. You know how to make your wife happy😇. See you in the next one👋🩵🤍
Very pretty, I know your wife loves it. Heck, my husband has only gotten me flowers, maybe 4 times in 41 yrs. But that's okay too. I'm not much of a flower person. Have a great week,Mike❤
Thanks Jayne, I try to make sure my wife always has fresh flowers, she loves then and I love seeing her smile when I bring them home, trouble is my daughters have now started asking why they are not getting flowers lol 😂 😀
I am totally impressed with your attitude and patience. I would have lost within the first couple of bumps. I also enjoyed the fact that you didn't edit out any of the problems you faced. Instead, you showed ways of getting around each of the hiccups. I was also very glad to hear that you bought 2 glass sleeves... just in case. 🤦♀️ I really enjoyed this video and plan to watch some more. Thanks for sharing, hope your wife loved the vase. 🇨🇦
Thanks so much Nancy, I don't let little things like this bother me it's all part of woodturning and I love the opportunity to work out problems and find solutions 😃
What a wonderful treasure for your wife to keep. Love the cones in resin. Love the way your videos don’t hide the odd bit of “trouble” even when there are more than one in the course of one project.
Hi Mike, that was quite an adventure, Again you showed how you are willing to adapt the project to achieve your goal. It was smashing that you were making this for your wife. The colours blended well like you I was surprised that the sparkles were not showing. It looked great when finished, even better with the flowers, Thanks for the video looking forward to the next one.⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Well Mike. That was a journey and a half you had. Wobbling start. Then spun off. Then the slieve went for a burton. And guess what, You produced a really magnificent Vase worthy of a Queen, AKA your dearest Wife. She is a very lucky Lady to get that. Well done Mike. Great Video full of shocks and surprises. Cheers
Thanks so much Peter, I left about another 30 minutes of problems on the cutting room floor lol, this one really put me through it but well worth the hassle 😀
A 2-part, 5 minute epoxy is one option. But, you would have to mix up (quite?) a few small amounts, and wait for each row (or 2) to cure before rotating. Hot glue, as you know, has a risk of melting during the exothermic resin curing. I think THICK ca glue & activator might be the best, least risky, and fastest solution. I only blurted out one manly utterance when the piece left the lathe! The video had all the elements: love, surprise, frustration, obstacles to overcome, success, etc! Great job on a beautiful vase Mike! Joe CA
Never mind your design and technical skills, what I admire most is your patience! All those setbacks, and the worst I heard you say was Drat. Well done!
Thank you very much Rhiannon, I find it very hard to get angry while doing something I love and in general, it does not solve anything and alters your outlook on life. 😀
Hi there, I just wanted to say that I thought the same thing as you did when you cut the base off and was so glad to hear that he won’t go to waste as it could be turned into something beautiful :-)
I'm convinced glue guns are evil inventions made solely to remind us of our limitations! 😁 Truly love this piece. Such a beautiful work of art for your wife. I honestly thought this project was going to be "the tragic one", but look how amazing it is. Gorgeous!! ☺️ Oh...love the way you air brushed Hooch!
Thanks Cynthia, I was not sure if it would make it to the end but I was determined not to give up. Yes heat guns are the most horrible inventions known to man! Hooch earned a clean after everything he went through lol 😀
That turned our beautifully Mike! The cones show up nicely and the resin has it's own interesting flowing grain. Enjoyed the journey with you on this, and can appreciate the challenges and mishaps along the way, as it felt like one my own projects! Hope your wife enjoys this beautiful creation you made for her.
Thanks my friend, this one certainly had a few problems but all was good at the end. My wife loves it and the Mother in law asked if I was taking orders lol 😀
An absolutely marvelous piece, Mike. I know with fiberglass yacht molds we used to apply a good coat of car wax to the mold. You know, the rub on out of a round tin and buff off type. Then, they used to crack the boat out of the mold with the airline like you do. It’s just a thought, but it might work with your resin molds, especially those ones you’d like to try and keep. 😃 Keep up the excellent work.
That is a beautiful vase for your wife. I enjoy working with pinecones in my resin pieces. They add such character. I felt for you with all the challenges you faced, but in the end you came out on top. And I have tried many hot glue guns and they are all a pain but for glue sticks I use the Gorilla Glue brand and it works great.
Wow, a beautiful piece of artwork. Made even more special by the problems it caused, - memories to be shared with your wife. She is a very lucky lady 😊
Well done! This is a lovely piece, with a tale to tell. The resin colour, with the sequooia cones, reminds me of pinecones peering up, through the snow.
spectacular vase , love the two colors , they work well with each other . the turnings that give use the most problems are the ones that make use better.
@@MikeHolton You may know this. In the story The Color Purple, the character Sug says “I think it pisses God off if you walk by the color purple in a a field somewhere and don’t notice it” Purple flowers in your lovely vase .. the perfect gift to your wife 💜
Beautiful piece, as always. Im a bit behind on your content but have been catching up. I very much appreciate all the tips and tricks you include in your videos, theyre very helpful, thank you. As for glue guns, i like the dremel one and use the dremel glue sticks also. I like how quickly it heats up, the strength of the bond, how quickly it dries and how easy it is to remove from wood with a half decent chisel leaving no marks (i use it a lot to secure pieces on my planer sled).
Very nice gift for the Mrs., Mike! If you orient the cones point out they look like flowers in the resin. I think you should try a small salad palm in resin. I've done two and they look amazing. Thought I would also share about my glue gun. I have a Gorilla dual temp glue gun that works awesome with high temp glue, which is best for the heat off resin. It wasn't expensive. I would love to share some photos with you, if you would like, from some of my projects. I am not a you tuber, so much respect for what you do to get these videos out there!
Mike, when using a container like a plastic tube, to get it off so I can use it again I use a heat gun on low heat and have it on a turntable. The plastic melting point is lower than resin. I have the plastic heat so I can touch it in order to get it off, hope this helps.
Someone’s gonna say it, so I thought it would be me. The words that spring to mind are ‘Sack the Juggler’. What a fantastic result I have to say and I have to take my hat out to you again for such a fantastic result :-)
What a great idea! Love how it turned out. I've seen other videos where different sized bits are used gradually from smallest to biggest for hollowing, so I hope that helps.😊
I always love the 3D effect of cones in resin. Concernic the hot glue gun: I recommend the Steinel Gluematic 5000. I bought it in 2021 and it is still working fine. Hopefully you can buy it in the UK.
Wow that piece made you work for it I'm so glad you managed to get it finished it's a beautiful piece, something i always wanted to try, your other half will be chuffed with it, Mike another great video thanks for sharing, Kind regards From will 👍 😊
I don’t remember the turner I stole it from but I have had good luck using puffs of compressed air to remove resin pieces from molds. I’ve been wanting to try a cone piece for a while. This was inspiring. Great job!
Love this project! I have found the Ryobi One 18v glue gun to be excellent. (Cheap glue sticks are a trap; often under-sized and problematic.) It occurs to me that wrapping the prepared spindle in (say) 80 grit sandpaper (in a spiral), and then touching each cone to the resultant cylinder would prepare it better for gluing, and may have simplified the gluing process. CA glue may well have worked, this way.
Everything seemed to fight back, but what an amazing finish - the resin looks like fast-flowing water. Would this work as a shade for a low-power (LED?) lamp, or would the resin be affected? I don't know if the walls would need to be thinner, as the resin looks opaque. Stunning result - thanks for showing us.
Hope this tiny bit helps in a materials purchase or whatever you need. I look forward to your new videos (and watch your older ones until then, lol). 😊
Thanks so much, everything the channel makes and any donations all get out back in to help buy materials and keep the channel going 🙂 thank you so much!
You are the master of understatement, "Wow...Okay...That's not ideal." 😅 Thought I was going to have to watch from behind the sofa, Doctor Who style. Lovely result, though, and you'll always remember making it.
Mike, great work. Glad to see I’m not the only one who encounters setbacks. 😃 I’m sure your wife is over the moon for this vase! It turned out beautifully!,,
That IPA moment, when the true nature of the piece and the idea is revealed, was amazing. Is it any kind of fun when glass smashes and pieces fly off the chuck? It all makes dramatic and interesting content, and I guess life isn't always sweet and perfectly polished and this is a lesson in enjoying the journey. Nothing phases you Mike.... on camera anyway. Artists get into "the zone" this is a sacred place where the creative energies flow and the world around just blurs out, time has no meaning. This is where the raw creativity is flowing and nothing else matters; this is when going to the supermarket at 18:00 on a Sunday seems to be OK.
Haha thanks my friend, things can phase me but not when related to woodturning, I do this for fun, a way to release my imaginations. If something goes wrong I just carry on and solve the problem. The flow state is an amazing feeling, I have studied it a lot with my day job trying to show my students ways they can induce it in the games they make.
This one looks nice. Hope your wife loves it too. Maybe if she doesn't mind we can see or hear her reaction in the next video. I know my wife always appreciates flowers, especially with a new vase.
Beautiful. My favorite cone or pod in resin piece I've seen. Not sure of its the separation of color and movement of the swirls, or the texture of the cones themselves, but the cones look almost superimposed over the resin.
I’ve caught up with you now, and what a great time to watch you produce a lovely flower vase, and I too bought a forstner bit to the exact size for the same reason, and I always sneak up using many smaller bits before committing myself but I have enough time to do so. Mine was all wood and the sheath is now firmly jammed into the pot! Yandles recommended their TEC305-12 glue gun and I’ve had no regrets buying it. I love to see ribbons of resin flying off the lathe over - someone else 😂. Have a fantastic weekend with your family, as I will with mine 🌞
It is expensive compared to hobbyist glue guns, but the glue gun you want is the FastenMaster Pro; I believe the model is PAM HB 220. Flooring professionals use it. It is one of the better tool choices I have made.
Thank you for showing the problems you encountered, rather than just a perfect process. It proves that even experts have issues! Lovely work.
You're welcome Cheryl, I never cut out my mistakes or problems, I hope by showing them everyone can learn how to fix or avoid them😀
I think your wife will love it the blue with the pinecones is stunning 😊
Love the way you are nonplussed with Woodturning adversity. Pinecones in resin are one of my favorites. Well done indeed.
Thanks Alicia, there is no point in getting mad or angry, these things happen so you just pick it up and carry on 😀
What a labor of love. Mike you are so special. This flower vase is just beautiful. You are right Aleta, there is no way I'm making another lol 😀
@@MikeHolton lol! When you turn more through a pinecone towards the cores, they turn into a fascinating star-burst motif! Your wife is a lucky gal!

There's something deeply funny about a lovely gift for the wife being one of the most troublesome projects you've had in a minute.
Haha I did think that 😀
Few things -
1: the blue is lovely,
2: that resin makes a helluva mess
3: hope she appreciates the work involved
4: nice one Mike 👍
@michaellionart4841 Thanks Michael 😃
I really like the look of the white and blue resin. I’m so impressed with your vision. You are the best. ❤️

Thanks and thanks for the recommendation my friend 😀
Wow, a beautiful piece of artwork. Made even more special by the problems it caused, - memories to be shared with your wife. She is a very lucky lady 😊
Thank you very much Sue 😀
Nice vase. I like the colors. Happy wire, happy life. Thanks for sharing.
Always Bruce and thanks 😀
That is so unique and so beautiful! I love how sharply the cones are visible. It’s really lovely!❤
Thanks Barb 😀
Well done! This is a lovely piece, with a tale to tell. The resin colour, with the sequooia cones, reminds me of pinecones peering up, through the snow.
Thanks so much I really appreciate it 😀
You over came the problems you had and made it into an amazing vase.
Thanks so much 😀
spectacular vase , love the two colors , they work well with each other . the turnings that give use the most problems are the ones that make use better.
Thanks Michal, I could not agree more 😀
Gorgeous! And ‘The Color Purple’ flowers make it perfect 💜
Thanks, I had so much fun making this 😀
@@MikeHolton You may know this. In the story The Color Purple, the character Sug says “I think it pisses God off if you walk by the color purple in a a field somewhere and don’t notice it”
Purple flowers in your lovely vase .. the perfect gift to your wife 💜
Thanks so much for the recommendation I'll look into them 😃
Very nice gift for the Mrs., Mike!
Thanks so much Kevin, I would love to see your work, you can email me at (mike@mikeholton.net) all the best, Mike 😀
That was very rewarding to see. I see how that one would be difficult! Your wife will love it!
Thanks Ken, I certainly made it harder than it could have been lol 😀
Through all the trials you persisted and have produced another wonderful piece of craftsmanship.
The final design is great. 👌
Thank you very much! 😀
Mike, when using a container like a plastic tube, to get it off so I can use it again I use a heat gun on low heat and have it on a turntable. The plastic melting point is lower than resin. I have the plastic heat so I can touch it in order to get it off, hope this helps.
Thanks Dave, next time I'll give it a go 😀
Someone’s gonna say it, so I thought it would be me. The words that spring to mind are ‘Sack the Juggler’. What a fantastic result I have to say and I have to take my hat out to you again for such a fantastic result :-)
Thanks Martin, bit of an uphill struggle but we got there in the end lol
@@MikeHolton you always do mate. I always look forward to your next turning video :-)
What a great idea! Love how it turned out. I've seen other videos where different sized bits are used gradually from smallest to biggest for hollowing, so I hope that helps.😊
Thanks so much! 😊
I always love the 3D effect of cones in resin. Concernic the hot glue gun: I recommend the Steinel Gluematic 5000. I bought it in 2021 and it is still working fine. Hopefully you can buy it in the UK.
Thanks so much Kerstin, I'll have a look 😀
Great despite setback love the color blue.
Thanks Don ☺️
I love it, happens so be in some of my favorite colors and cones I think are always fascinating when turned.
I hope your wife likes it!
Thanks Susan, she loves it 😁
The isopropanol cleaning is always my favorite finish on a piece
Mine too, that first wipe is a joy 😀
Love the challenges it give you and you over came the problem, love how it turned out I’ll put it on my to do list .
Great work
Thanks Chris, have fun 😀
Wow that piece made you work for it I'm so glad you managed to get it finished it's a beautiful piece, something i always wanted to try, your other half will be chuffed with it, Mike another great video thanks for sharing,
Kind regards From will 👍 😊
Thanks so much Will, I edited out about another 20 minutes of problems, sometimes we get projects that just test us to the limit lol 😀
Lovely vase Mike! I like the shape you put in on the sides. Not only does it look nice it will help with grip when it is full.
haha are you saying I'll probably drop it lol 😂😅, only joking, thanks Nikkie 😀
I don’t remember the turner I stole it from but I have had good luck using puffs of compressed air to remove resin pieces from molds. I’ve been wanting to try a cone piece for a while. This was inspiring. Great job!
Thanks, I tried compressed ait but no good. All the best, Mike 😀
The love you have for your wife is palpable. It's great to see! Oh, and great vase! Thank god for Tesco, right?
Haha yes thank goodness for Tesco. My wife is amazing and I love her 😀
Love this project!
I have found the Ryobi One 18v glue gun to be excellent. (Cheap glue sticks are a trap; often under-sized and problematic.)
It occurs to me that wrapping the prepared spindle in (say) 80 grit sandpaper (in a spiral), and then touching each cone to the resultant cylinder would prepare it better for gluing, and may have simplified the gluing process. CA glue may well have worked, this way.
Thanks Peter that is a great idea 😀
A lovely gift for your wife! Nicely done!
Thanks, she loves it 😁
Everything seemed to fight back, but what an amazing finish - the resin looks like fast-flowing water. Would this work as a shade for a low-power (LED?) lamp, or would the resin be affected? I don't know if the walls would need to be thinner, as the resin looks opaque. Stunning result - thanks for showing us.
Thanks Steve, it would make a great lamp, the light gets through it easily and looks amazing 😀
Hope this tiny bit helps in a materials purchase or whatever you need. I look forward to your new videos (and watch your older ones until then, lol). 😊
Thanks so much, everything the channel makes and any donations all get out back in to help buy materials and keep the channel going 🙂 thank you so much!
Great job considering all the mishaps. Your wife is a lucky woman.😊❤
Thanks Deborah, she is but not as lucky as I am to be with her (punching well above my weight) 😀
Love the way that those sequoia cones looked in this vase. Your wife should love it!
She does, thanks William 😀
You are the master of understatement, "Wow...Okay...That's not ideal." 😅 Thought I was going to have to watch from behind the sofa, Doctor Who style.
Lovely result, though, and you'll always remember making it.
I certainly will Nikki, this one tested my patience so much lol 😀
Mike, great work. Glad to see I’m not the only one who encounters setbacks. 😃 I’m sure your wife is over the moon for this vase! It turned out beautifully!,,
Thanks Geoffrey, problems are all part of woodturning and happen to us all 😀
That IPA moment, when the true nature of the piece and the idea is revealed, was amazing.
Very cool vase. I enjoy making them.
Thanks Mark 😀
This one sure gave you a work out! That will make it all the more special for your lovely wife. And it turned out so very pretty 😊
Thanks so much Nana 😊
This one looks nice. Hope your wife loves it too. Maybe if she doesn't mind we can see or hear her reaction in the next video. I know my wife always appreciates flowers, especially with a new vase.
I should have filmed her reaction next time I make something for her I will 😀
@@MikeHolton no worries, your private live is yours alone. With you deciding what you want to share.
Wow that was a trip to completion but we made it. Amazing vase. Keep up the awesome work. 👽
Haha thanks my friend, this was a slog and a half! Glad my wife likes it 😀
Beautiful. My favorite cone or pod in resin piece I've seen. Not sure of its the separation of color and movement of the swirls, or the texture of the cones themselves, but the cones look almost superimposed over the resin.
Thanks, it really does give a nice effect! 😀
Another amazing experiment that came out perfect in the end
Thanks Simon, this one was a tough one 😀
Inspirational stuff, thank you
Glad you enjoyed it! 😀
That turned out beautiful. I am sure your wife will be happy with it.
Thanks so much, she loves it 😊
Das ist ja mal ein sehr schönes Teil👌 Sehr gut gemacht mit einer tollen Farbe . Hoffe es gefällt deiner Frau👏
Danke Michael, sie liebt es 😀
Pine cones do give a unique look in resin. I see a steady rest in your future. They do help on projects this talk.
Thanks Randy, I do have a steady rest but forgot to use it lol 😀
The design on the exterior works well with the pinecones and epoxy. Another fine job
Thanks so much Eric 😀
Beautiful piece. Your wife is going to love it.
She does and thanks 😀
We all have those projects that just test us. Well done for the perseverance for a great vase.
Thank you! Cheers! 😀
Thanks so much Ray, I'll take a look at the Yandles glue gun but a lot of people are suggesting the Bosch one, all the best to you and yours, Mike 🙂
Wonderful to see the process, as always 😃 Thank you for sharing
My pleasure Danielle 😊
It is expensive compared to hobbyist glue guns, but the glue gun you want is the FastenMaster Pro; I believe the model is PAM HB 220. Flooring professionals use it. It is one of the better tool choices I have made.
Thanks, I have taken a look for it but you can't get it in the UK. I have found another which is the same design so will see if I can find a review.
That was fighting every step to a beautiful vase!
Thanks Kathryn, it certainly made me work for it! 😀
Well done, Mike!! You faced some significant challenges and persevered!
Thanks Tracy, the only way you learn is by not giving up 😂
Love the pinecones.
Me too, thanks Mary 😊
