  • A tornado hit the Pennington Gap VA area on May 16, 2023. In this video, after bleeding the clutch and changing the rear tire on my deceased brother-in-law's 1991 Honda Goldwing Interstate, I go for a short spin to survey some of the damage.
    Luckily no lives were lost and no one was hurt that I'm aware of during this storm.

    Nice old bike. Glad you're giving it much needed maintenance. Kudos for getting rid of that hillbilly exhaust.

    Those two top bolts you should have left it you only need to loosen them a lot. Bike sounds good.

      @@LifeInTheGap incredible what those bias plies (assuming) can handle! The 1500 is time consuming to maintain in comparison to the 1800 getting to the rear brakes and tires.. I didn’t see it in the video but I’m assuming you bled the slave cylinder after you got the master cylinder cleaned up and bled out? If not it would be worth going back and doing it just to get every last bubble.. my 92 is in my garage waiting for me to swap the engine, bought one on eBay.. I have the dreaded transmission ratchet/clack from the years of heel toe shifter and trailer towing.. 176k on it. Sad because it runs great otherwise.. have about 100 hours in it getting it back to 100% only for the tranny to go, too deep in it now to give up lol

    • @LifeInTheGap
      @LifeInTheGap  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Kwhopperfan , good point on the slave cylinder! I actually did bleed it out again (this time in a bottle) but I blocked out the camera with my body...so I didn't include that shot.
      Sounds like you've got your money's worth outta your Wing! 176K, wow!
      Those bikes will last forever if you keep 'em maintained!
      Bum deal about the tranny...hope you get'er going again soon!

    I take it you found out those two bolts on the top for the luggage tilt unit only need to be loose so it is the pivot point same goes for the ones in the side bags. Glad you got it anyway. nice video and wow.. I think he got every mile out of that tire!

    Shes coming along nicely
    Any idea what speakers your brother swapped out the factory ones for up in the front? i'm in the market for a new pair and it seems the factory speakers are 5" which are proving rather hard to source a quality speaker in that size. 5.25s available all day long but they're just too big to fit and 4.5s will fit but they're too small and leave a gap all around them.
    Notes for the future, a can of brake clean could probably have saved you a little elbow grease clearing out the passage ways in the clutch reservoir that stuff will break down that crusted up old brake fluid in seconds.
    Next time you've got the bags up like that you may want to unbolt the final drive and lube your drive shaft. if i recall correctly service interval on that is something like 15k but fresh grease will never hurt :D
    Nice to see you've already got the old girl road going! mine is still a bit some assembly required but its coming along.

    • @LifeInTheGap
      @LifeInTheGap  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, that Brakkleen would've made a world of difference...and to beat it all I had 2 cans sitting right there staring at me! This old age is zapping my brain.
      Howard never had mentioned anything about changing the speakers although he may have done it in the early years of the bike's life. I don't see anything on them as far as a brand from the frontside. The radio itself is a Kenwood. If I dig into the dash I will try to check those speakers and let you know!
      Thanks for the advice...again!

      J and P Cycles sells J and M speakers. Fit perfectly, just put a set on. Paid $129 pair. I ride a 90'SE. You can hear them great at interstate speed.

    My windshield had 12V wiper assembly added too shield. But stress cracks were working around mounting holes an up shield. So I made as template of shield bottom, then used bottom template to mark a new shield bottom above stress crack damage. It lower the height of shield (I like it better shorter.) Shield mounting bolts allow for about 3" height adjustment.

    • @LifeInTheGap

      Can't say that I've ever seen a wiper on a bike! I would worry about scratching. Do you have any problems with that?

      It is a Tulsa. That company sold out to All America Products...which went out of business in 2012. However, I have read somewhere that Slipstreamer now sells the Tulsa although I can't find it by name on their website. Their # is 763-780-9757 if you want to check with them. Thanks!

    You have a really nice place! Congratulations! Working on rear tire removal, I was wondering if you had a ceiling hook. (Not same as a sky hook!). Could bike be lifted by passenger side handles an wrenched as high as needed too remove tire without removing parts? I'm interested because of maintenance on my 88' GW! So vested interest. Mine painted same color but had airbrush desert painted scenes on top luggage an side bags. Painter added nice eagles head behind front wheel. I'd like to tell you about me buying my bike, but I'm already too long winded here! Very sad news about your neighbor tree accident. My neighbor was killed working his portable mill when bent log bucked off table while he picked up dropped tape measure. Same kind of freak accident! God bless You & Yours!

    • @LifeInTheGap
      @LifeInTheGap  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Tim!
      I don't have a ceiling hook. Matter if fact, I was working on the GW in my basement which only has 8' ceilings but you are right, the hook would have made a world of difference! Other folks that I've seen remove the rear like that DID suspend it from above. I used a Delboy's Garage video as a guide.
      I would love to see your bike! Sounds like it's a beaut!
      Sorry to hear about your neighbor. That would be an awful way to go.

    what are those exhaust pipes man.

    • @LifeInTheGap
      @LifeInTheGap  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The old ones, which you see when the wheel is off in the video, were just a straight pipe job done at a local shop. I did have to put some new ones on to get a state inspection sticker which you might catch a glimpse of in the opening walk-around. They are a turndown pipe from Dennis Kirk.

      I thought the same thing, makes sense with the auto pipe and welded straps. Glad to hear you’re putting on some actual pipes. Would be annoying to ride like that.

      @@johndanielstroud , surprisingly the straights weren't really much louder than the new ones I put on. They were just ugly as all get out...and for some reason the sticker guy didn't feel comfortable with them!

    Are your exhaust pipes add-on or it that what inside of my pipes look like? Sounded like could have had some damage lifting back unit up, I watch garage boy from England. I see it took some prying with rubber grommet forced out of mounting hole. Looks like a 2 person job lifting rear unit without damage or frustration. You have air there, being used to clean out clutch hydraulic cylinder. I worked for Honda in Portland an Beaverton. What made work much easier was an air hose with butterfly 3/8 air palm driver. All that wrenching could be, "zip" an your done.

    • @LifeInTheGap
      @LifeInTheGap  ปีที่แล้ว

      The pipes which were front and center on the video were a straight piping job my brother-in-law had done by a local car mechanic a few years ago. I have since replaced them with turn-down pipes from Dennis Kirk.

    • @shblair
      @shblair ปีที่แล้ว +2

      when lifting the rear as one section, you have to watch the rear crash protectors, they like to catch the curves on bags as they pull free. same going back down but its really groaning and making noise with no damage. 6 bolts off and 2 loosen....easy. i have found that if yo have rear arm rests it stays up on its own once fully tilted. good luck, once yo try it it will be the only way you service the rear.

  • @user-qx7bn6wx9g
    @user-qx7bn6wx9g ปีที่แล้ว +2

    To remove the rear tire you do not have to do that that is the stupid way of doing it underneath the trunk there's four screws you pull those screws out pull that piece back then you go into the left saddlebag and take the 10 mmboats out the two on the bottom that you on the side after you take the Chrome little piece that has two more screws sitting down on the bottom just above the tailpipe you take that little piece out with it with the light setting is and then you can take that whole side of bag and hanging on the back then you can get to the brakes on the left side take them off then get to the boat to take the shaft out without having to take the whole rear end of the saddlebag and the trunk off that's the stupidest way of doing it okay you can do a 1200 and a 1500 Goldwing the same way
