  • Bringing my deceased brother-in-law's Goldwing back to life!
    Howard passed away in June 2022 after a 6 month battle with Encephalitis. He had last ridden his 1991 Goldwing Interstate in the summer of 2021 after rebuilding the carburetor himself per TH-cam University. He had mentioned that there was still an issue with the clutch that he needed to track down.
    Let's see if we can get this beast roadworthy again!
    Check out the video from where I retrieve the bike from Howard's garage:

    there is a bleeder on the clutch slave cylinder located on the back of the engine forward of the swing arm. also your wing has a wet clutch. it uses the same oil as the engine does, its highly recommended that you use the proper engine oil designed for motorcycles with a wet clutch. the clutch may drag with automotive grade oil. nice bike hope you enjoy racking up some miles on it👍

    well since you asked and i enjoyed the story, you have some white smoke coming from the rear when you where revving it, also the engine sounds like the combustion is not at its best, and the bike doesn't pull as much as it aught to, could be the clutch combined with some new plug & fine tuning, also check the muffler could be a hole there, check the breaking pads and disks as well as the front fork suspension . she just need a major service, that's all.

      @@LifeInTheGap She'll be all right in your hands. His wife knows who she was giving the bike to. All she needs is TLC (tender, love and care) and in return she'll provide you with a (much needed) closure on your loss. [Condolences, I didn't know him and I only got a glimpse of you from the videos, but he sounds like a man I would have liked to know.] I look forward to seeing a video of you taking her on a long journey, maybe Key West. Wonderful bike. But because of its is going to need a lot or work done on it. Worth the time and money if you can do it yourself. Timing belts and all rubber parts inside and on the outside of carbs need to be replaced. The timing sounds off so a valve adjustment to.. Def new battery need if its been sitting for long. Stainless steel clutch lines or you will be bleeding the old rubber lines every month. A wonderful classic bike.

    Instead of wiping a little oil on the oil filter gasket as a lubricant, smear a little Vaseline petrolium jelly on it instead. Like oil it's a petrolium product that will also lubricate the filter gasket. Unlike oil, it will remain on the gasket even if you were to lay the filter on its side and take a bathroom/lunch/beer break. Learned this from my brother who worked as an auto mechanic for many years. His tool box always has a small jar of Vaseline just for this purpose.

    • @LifeInTheGap
      @LifeInTheGap  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've heard of folks doing that but of course the thought never crosses my mind when I'm actually changing the oil/filter and there's some new oil sitting there handy, LOL.

      Easier to pull the seat for most work. Clutch slave cylinder is often the issue on these, but storage never helped them keep prime.. easily rebuilt but easier to bleed occasionally when you notice it dropping off. I didn’t have time to watch the whole thing but sea foam works wonders in the gas “fixed” a gl1200 and 1500 carb that way lol

    This is a enjoyable video , love seeing these old bikes cared for, However i am worried about your choice of engine oil, i believe the synthetic oil is bad for the clutches because of added friction modifiers can cause slippage and premature clutch wear. i may be mistaken and that oil may not have any but i would highly recommend looking into it. also as another viewer pointed out the fuel leak was probbably some stuck float valves, i'd recommend adding some seafoam or lucus to the fuel and taking it on a good drive ( after checking the oil is okay for the bike) help break down any old gelled fuel in the carbs.

    • @LifeInTheGap
      @LifeInTheGap  ปีที่แล้ว

      Your concern about the oil is legit. I had previously never used Mobil 1 oil in my entire life! However, I did do the homework on what type of oil to put back in the Goldwing and using TH-camrs Clifford Rice and Goldwingdocs as references, they both suggested the Mobil 1 high mileage full synthetic oil. It contains no friction modifiers per the blank info at the bottom of the donut hole!
      I do appreciate the advice and hope to take you up on that "good drive" as soon as I can get it insured, tagged and inspected! (Gotta give everybody a little money.)

    Probably just a carb float that was stuck, then started floating. How many miles are on it? Will probably go 300k or more. Just need to bleed the clutch if it is mushy feeling. Beautiful, ageless bike. I have a '97 Valkyrie 1500 with basically the same engine. How you checked the oil by just dropping the dipstick in etc is all the same.

    Well, I’m sure you’ll get as many opinions as you get comments 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️. If it was mine, besides the rear tire replacement, I damm sure run down that fuel leak as much as possible. Maybe when you fill the gas tank, it might reappear? Having broke down on the Hwy smiles & smiles away from home in a car, it’s a RPITA to break down on your MC. You don’t want a fuel leak showing it’s self when you’re out and about having fun. ( just do the best you can to figure out what happened & if will it happen again, then trust the Lord 🙏). Check and/or replace the front & rear break pads and flush out the brake lines with new fluid. Again, me personally, if I couldn’t spring for new braided steel/Teflon brake/clutch lines, I’d replace front & rear & hyd clutch lines with new stock rubber ones from Honda if possible. Heavy MC, and rubber lines are old, you do the math. If you wear a ten dollar helmet, or no helmet on the road, with shorts, tee shirt, flip flops, then everything I mentioned doesn’t mean Jack Bo-diddly. I’d also flush out the radiator coolant and use new Honda 50/50. I run that in my 2002 Kawasaki Concours… the Honda coolant is great stuff. Important too. Sync the carbs if it’s not running smooth, but maybe check valve clearances intake/exhaust, or at least try to find out when & if they were done (if ever) Lots of folks just don’t want to do that, or pay someone. Can’t blame em, but a tight exhaust valve that burns the valve will lead to other problems, one cylinder down on power makes the others work harder…yada yada yada, for the sake of a nail, the war was lost… . Last, and important, as least in the ride quality & handling dept. is fork oil replacement. Depending on the years & miles, you might consider replacement of bushings once you have the forks out. That in its self is is an accomplishment. Chances are you’ll NEVER EVER have to replace the bushing again. All I’ve mentioned (forgot replace wheel bearings, but that’s most likely not a necessity IMO) will cost you more than you want to spent. On the Hwy, I want to know my MC is road worthy as much as I can make it within my budget. Maybe you only intend on around town short hops & having it ready to go 500 miles at the drop of a hat isn’t what you’re all about?🤷‍♂️ Still, brake lines, new coolant, new brake pads, new fork oil, check/adjust valve clearance with carb sync, all seem to fall under regular maintenance to me. Good luck… 👍😎
