- I play a Magic: the Gathering Online Legacy league with a BW Scam / Orzhov Scam decklist built around Pest Control. Pest Control is potentially the most powerful card from Outlaws of Thunder Junction. In this shell is destroys small permanents while pitching to both Grief and Solitude. Reanimate and Ephemerate give you good value on said elementals, while a Stoneforge Mystic package serves as another way to win.

Match 1 game 1 you could have played your surveil land and cycled pest control to look 2 deep for a swords. Love that the card can be cycled in spots like that :)
Yea, came here to say that. Plow was def in top 2.
I believe he could have also played the surveil land instead of the untapped land when he played SFM. Then he would have had 4 untapped mana in the next turn and could play+equip Jitte, attack, get 2 counters, use them both to gain 4 life. That would have bought another turn, but may still not have been enough.
Should also have cycled pest control at the end.
44 cards in deck, 3 copies of swords left, 2 looks is like a 13% chance to hit so it was actually significant. Surprised Phil didn't play this line he's usually very thorough but MTG is hard
@@danielhall9050 yeah and it's a lot easier to see the line when you can pause a video and nobody is watching you. His consistent good play is really impressive
I have an ongoing series I call “Is this a work post or Magic post?” When I see something on social media which isn’t immediately clear when browsing. Those types of posts have been increasingly significantly.
I’m the sales manager for Bull’s Eye Pest Control.
round 4 was certainly a midrange moment of all time
I think cycling jebaiots you into wanting to play it mainboard, but Pest Control feels like a sideboard card.
16:35 couldn't you have used Lion Sash to remove two lands from the graveyard, so Reclaimer shrinks enough you can kill it?
If they activate it in response to fill the yard you'd have had a window to Solitude anyway
Came here to say this
Same!
I saw this line too. I think g3 r1 was a win
You know the lands matchup was interesting, and so confusing to wonder when we just say: You were willing to concede a matchup you were going to win.
Timers are a strange sub-game.
At the end of the final game you should have attacked with the 5/5 army bluffing a lethal attack if you had another bowmaster or ephemerate. I don't think they trade off their troll but gives your opponent a chance to mess up when you have no other options.
Round 1 game 3 you could exile lands with lion sash and then take out the counter out of jite to kill the reclaimer
Cool streamlined deck, and major props for maintaining a positive attitude despite drawing so poorly in R5:G1.
Ive neen enjoying it in cedh. Getting rid of tivit's clues, kinnans moxen, or even large Bowmaster tokens is very nice. And thays not even addressing the weird 1 mana permanents that sit around and hate on random aspects of the game that arent worth killing otherwise
Round four, game two is the fastest game against Lands that I ever didn't see. Good job!
Seriously though, round 4 was a GREAT argument for Pest Control, and I loved the one game that you did get.
Correct me if im wrong but match 1 game 1 could you not play the land surveil and cycle pest control praying for swords?
good way to demonstrate that the power of a two-for-one is based on how strong the two are
this is exactly my kind of deck, i'm sad it didn't work out better
R1 g3 you could force the block with stone cause kaldra has first strike and could pump stone for lethal
It seems to me that blue, among other things, should be important for Pest Control because of cantrip's. This deck seemed to rely heavily on the cycle on this card and ended up having a lot of it when it wasn't needed, and not enough of it when it was needed. And the card itself is good, but situational, and it should often be important to play it as soon as necessary, especially in the world of Lavaspur Boots. Therefore, perhaps the right direction for Pest Control is less copies that will be found using cantrip's.
Round 4 was hell.
These orzhov ephemerate decks have always been pretty trash tbh. This is basically just a bad Modern deck, but in Legacy. Too many cards just don't do anything in too many scenarios. It's also a strategy hinged on stalling out the game . . . But with no real way of capitalizing off that.
Nice video 👍
Ive been wondering about the new green flare in MH3 for Nic Fit lists
This deck looks very solid. I'm just unsure about the Ephemerates. Seems very situational. Didn't do much the times it was played this league.
It feels to me that this was a issue of deck role. Scam decks by nature are tempo decks that push for early disruption into killing your opponent. The opponent will recover with draws and card selection and you want to punish them while there doing it (cough cough bowmasters). You will often apply the pressure with 1 drops or at least fast threats. Pest control kills those threats so it seems that pest control does not really fit into what the deck is trying to do. I think pest control may be great but not in a shell where it actively prevents you from playing the tempo cards you want to play.
I look at Pest control as a copy of meltdown that allows UW control to splash for black instead of red with the added upside of Bowmasters and potential Thoughtseizes. Those are already trying to go for a slow and grindy game, they need ways to clear chalice on 1, and the floor of pest control now becomes a bad but almost uncounterable cantrip for 2 in a deck that already wants to hold up mana. Maybe this allows them to trade a few Swords for Solitudes, but I'm not sold on that as being worth it.
@@Fyrefrye Meltdown is sideboard card and not a main deck 4 of so sure but does not make sense to me for the main deck.
1:01:38 is there a reason to play out the land instead of bluffing a spell?
There's very little accomplished by bluffing a spell. You can do it, but it doesn't impact the game meaningfully most of the time. Lion Sash is still turning sideways, my opponent will still cast threats, etc.
Do boots or pest control get the h2h tie breaker?
On the one hand pest control destroys boots itself and ignores the ward if the equipped creature is 1CMC
OTOH boots gives haste which is a classic way to get value from your cards against sorcery speed removal.
I'm not sure I'd want to rely on pest control as my answer to saga + 2 tokens + boots, you're taking a big hit in exchange for mana efficiency & value. Maybe not even card advantage given that all that comes from one saga over a few turns.
Based on this league, I'd rather be playing boots.
This deck is so sick.
I wonder about running 1 copy of Damping Sphere in the sideboard
I like this deck but I think a bigger reanimate package would be better than the stone forge package. I’m thinking 2 Atraxa, 4 entomb, 3 animate dead. Remove 4 stoneforge, 1 dauthi voidwalker, the 3 equipment, and 1 other card.
1:36 Just saying that Null Elemental Blast is lookin' real juicy
Real off-topic question real quick: how do I access the Discord communtity as a ThrabenU patron on Patreon?
Uh, I think there is a "Discord integration" option that you have to do in your settings. I *think* I have a FAQ in my youtube video descriptions. If you have any trouble figuring it out, email me and I can manually add you.
@@ThrabenUniversity I figured it out lol. Took me forever and eventually decided to use my computer instead of my phone and got access to it in like two seconds. Thanks for the help!
What about urzas saga and samwise the stouthearted instead of a stoneforge package? I would also play thoughtseize to have more turn 1 action
Urza's Saga constructs and tutor targets are a bit of a non-bo with Pest Control
@@cammcgra forgot to mention that my initial idea was without pest control (or pest control only in the sb)
not a 4 of. Seems good though. Would be a lot better if it was an instant or if lavaspur boots wasnt just printed
I can imagine a VERY questionable 4C/Prismatic Ending mana Modern deck with Pest Control and Dreadhorde Arcanist with some of the MH3 cards like Null Elemental Blast/Meltdown
i think it would be funny to cast it in esper, with Teferi
Im always amazed by how stupidly designed sagas are. Why does the third counter go on it before you sacrifice it? Why does it happen outside your upkeep. Why is it not a non-land permanent?
9:00 cycle for drawing swords?
Yeah, I was going to say...
I think the problem with the deck is ephemorate, that card is just not great and is too situational. A too decked reanimate does stuff, but the blink spell should just be another card that is good on its own merits
Wait a second. Isn’t this Dead Guy Ale?
People where crazy about Hidetsugu Consumes All but i think this card is much better at it. Sure it doesnt hate the grave hate like Hidetsugu but its way faster and efficient
Mardu deck that plays both, perhaps?
i can see pest conrol being a thing in vintage
It seems crazy good as an anti-artifact mana tool.
someone screwed you on your haircut, nice list :)
27:34 yeah I mean delver is not as good a Magic card. Who knows Mh3 might bring a better one.
Dowthi -> Dawthi
I am not liking the equipment package in this deck.
This format really has become "f**k one drops" recently.
Too bad match one.if you had a shadowspear. shadowspear activation would've saved you. Made ML lose indestructible and pest control
playing equipment tutors and not playing lavastep boots. for shame
You can run a modern version of this. Just swap our Reanimate and run Persist or other Scam card. Most of the rest of the deck is Modern playable still. Pretty Sweet Deck. Might I dare say it's almost too fair.
How was this video posted 5 minutes ago, but the one comment is from 3 days ago.

would this be good in modern ? it seems like only a few cards arent modern legal - I imagine if something is good in legacy its even better in modern
