  • This is my intial impressions and in-depth review of the Dobyns Sierra Ultra Finesse Casting rod. I go over specs, my intended uses, and I also show the taper at difference forces to show how the rod bends thought the taper of the rod. Future videos will show casting a variety of lures and showing the taper with crank baits. The final video will be getting into some bass, walleye and panfish to test the rods versatility.
    This is the first mainstream rod to be specifically made for BFS fishing. I hope that this rod create competition among other rod makers to start to bring quality USA market BFS rods to the market.
    I got mine from Bait Finesse Empire:
    baitfinesseempire.com/dobyns-...
    Instagram: @baitfinesseempire ( baitfinesseempire), a new finesse fishing oriented web-based retailer opened the USA mid-April 2021. The shop carries a ton of Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) lures, lines and other gear. They also carry tackle from the USA and elsewhere. I am excite to partner with them to spread the love of BFS to the mainstream market. I will continue to share unbiased reviews of products with you all an encourage your feedback on products so Bait Finesse Empire can ensure they are stocking what the people want.
    Dobyns Sierra Ultra Finesse Casting SA 700c Rod Specs:
    7', 1/16-5/16 (1.5-8gr), 2-8lb line.
    The Sierra Ultra Finesse or BFS casting rods are a new addition for 2021. This series was built strictly due to angler request and the growing popularity. Ultra-Light bass fishing has become very popular over the last few years and we have heard from our anglers to bring back an Ultra-Light Finesse casting rod designed to throw baits as light as 1/16th oz (1.5g) and using 2-8lb line to target bass, panfish, crappie and trout..
    These models will be in lengths of 7′ and 7’4″ and will be one-piece models. These rods are very small in diameter and super lightweight. Be on the lookout for these at a Dobyns dealer this fall.
    FEATURES:
    High modulus graphite blanks
    Fuji Micro guides
    Fuji reel seats
    Kevlar wrapping
    Balanced and splined blanks
    Portugal cork - Split handle designs
    Solid carbon tip sections

      @@HobieWanKenobi I was out today nailing bass on a Shimano Sensilite casting rod with 1/16oz shaky head on 8lb FC. That sensitlite is 7' light power, but has a different taper than that Dobyns rod. It's an incredible rod for $49!

    Good review. I've been ranting about this rod and the action. The balance of power while still loading deep is pretty damn good for a finesse casting rod!

      I agree. I like how the rod's taper allows for a wide range of uses. The progressive loading was something I wasn't expecting before handling the rod.

    Yo Kenobi!..I bought this rod based off of your review!..I caught a 4.6 lm bass with it the other day!.I rigged it with a slx bfs reel with 10pound braid to a 6 pound flouro leader!..the most fun fishing I've had in a long time!I love to throw a 1/16 oz Blakemore spin head with a 2 inch swimbait on it..its legit!..I think the total lure weight about 1/8 oz.

    This rod and the 7'4" model are available right now. I preordered the 7' model directly from Dobyns in late December and received it in mid February. I am pairing it with a Daiwa Alphas Air TW (with Sagisi Customs clicker drag) throwing 1/8oz hair jigs for river Smallmouth. Gary Dobyns told me he had to go with the solid tip because the hollow tip prototypes were too prone to breakage. Like you, my initial impression of the rod is very positive. It feels light, well balanced , and good in hand. The tip loads well casting an 1/8oz. hair jig and if they sell well, Gary will add a 6'9" model.

    • @HobieWanKenobi
      @HobieWanKenobi  3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I do not own a single spinning reel. I have been converting all my rods to dobyns over the last two years. Looking to purchase one bfs setup. Trying to decide between a zero power and a one power. Thinking the 740 would help for longer casting but the 701 might be good because the lightest rod I have now is the champion 733. Also I would probably go with curado bfs reel?

  • @RonMTube
    @RonMTube 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Ajing rods often display that awkward casting due to their very thin solid tip with a fast transition to a stronger backbone. Glad this doesn't seem to be the case with the Dobyns.

    • @HobieWanKenobi
      @HobieWanKenobi  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah. I had a solid tip rod in the past that more so pushed lures instead of casting them. The Dobyns does well with casting. I just uploaded the casting/on the water video.

  • @shtizen4371
    @shtizen4371 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Ive used this rod paired with a Conquest bfs. Surprisingly sensitive with small jigs....tubes, crappie magnets. Could feel little crappie magnet slide down rocks. I was pretty impressed.
    Question if you don't mind? Should i install extra magnets in my conquest with 2.9mm spool? I know its a must with the shallow spool. Seems like I,m using more brakes then stock spool.
    Cant wait till you get the rod on the water for real world impressions.
    I went from 3 gram total weight 2.5 inch tube to 3/8th oz chatter bait with this rod.
    Its going to be a good all rounder bait finesse i think!

    • @HobieWanKenobi
      @HobieWanKenobi  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think this rod is going to be that "one and done" type of rod to bring shore fishing. Pretty versatile taper for power BFS.
      As far as the magnets, if you are using an Avail spool, they recommend using the extra magnets. If you are able to use less brakes with the extra magnets, that leaves more braking range for you to tap into when it gets windy or, you are casting hard to cast baits like a lightweight hair jig or something.

    • @shtizen4371
      @shtizen4371 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@HobieWanKenobi your dead on about the brakes. i was at 3/4ths brake setting in wind before i felt like it was doing anything.
      I mistakenly assumed it was the shallow spools inside diameter that called for the extra brakes, being further from the magnets. Maybe the metal alloy plays a role too?
      going to order em.
      ty for the reply!

    • @HobieWanKenobi
      @HobieWanKenobi  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah...I never got why the brakes would be needed if the inner diameter of the spool was closer to the magnets the the stock spool. I guess I learned something today.

    Hey man so I just received the 7’4” and the description on tackle warehouse said it was a Fast action, and on the rod it says Moderate Extra Fast??? 🤷🏻‍♂️😂 The rod seems to be bending super deep into the blank like a crank bait rod, I was wondering if you had a 7’4” or had any input or opinion on it. I’m really confused here lol and not sure if I should return it or if it would still make a pretty decent bfs rod. Just not sure. Thanks in advance 👊🏽

    • @HobieWanKenobi
      @HobieWanKenobi  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The tip is pretty fast (solid tip rod). from there, the mid section has a decent amount of give as well. I have the 700c and the 701c. I also used a few prototypes of Dobyns BFS rods, they make good versatile BFS rods. I prefer the Cashion Icon BFS for single hook applications like ned rigs and such.
      I have caught some big pike on my 700c. I am always careful not to high stick with the rod. the 701c had a normal tubular tip that gives me more secure feeling.

    I appreciate your effort to inform us and to be unbias. That is why I like your tubes. However it will be more informative and objective if you just hang a weight on the line and let us see how the rod bend. Tell us the weight the load and show some vertical and horizontal distances (the rodbuilding supplier Matagi does this for there blanks). Then the viewer can do the same with his rod and compare objectively and unbias. Also inform the weight of the rod. Or even better the weight of each section of the rod to provide an idea of the weight balance, if it is multi sectional. Otherwise show us the balance point without the reel. All this will make the buy or not decision much more qualified.

      @HobieWanKenobi  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you for the feedback. The weight of the static force is a good idea. Static force doesn't show how the taper progresses as well. The above suggestion is great for large amounts of data/detail. Most viewers are looking for more empirical data they can relate to experience. Most anglers, including me do not fully understand deflection angles and such most rod builders are keen on.
