Cashion is my favorite and close second is Dobyns. I own 3 of each with Shimano Curado and SLX BFS, KastKing Magnesium and 2 KastKing Kistrel reels. Thanks for the content guys!
I agree with your feedback on the Shimano BFS reel. For a similar price, the Shimano Scorpion BFS is way better. The Japan version of any US Shimano model is better.
I've had dozens of rods and reels over the decades but I never fell in love with a combo until I tried the KastKing Kestrel reel with the Kestrel rod. It's pure magic! I recommend you try the proper rod with your Kestrel reel.
Ive got the zephyr and the curado bfs and i love both the zephyr definitely need bearings it was silky smooth and to me outperformed the curado on lighter lures but soon started making noise the curado is still as good as it was day 1 but it never did great on super light lures but its my favorite ned rig reel
You can get the KING of BFS the Shimano Aldebaran BFS XG from Asian Portal for $262 right now plus about $10 for shipping!!! Absolutely a steal! I’ve ordered rods and reels from them and there absolutely Legit!!
The Dark wolf is what everyone is copying? the DWU is a copy itself of Shimano and Daiwa. Also there is a 119g reel available now, lighter than the flightfeather (125)
My son has a stock standard Kastking Zephyr on a 5ft6 Pioneer Evo 2 rod. He regularly uses 1/32 once Eagle Claw jig heads with tiny zoom Minnow plastics or Keitech paddle tails and casts just fine...
I love my BFS gear! I have a Alderbaran and a BFS Edge rod. I absolutely catch tanks on that set up. Biggest so far is a 4# bass but multiple 3's as well and a crap ton of 2's and smaller. Just a great way to catch fish in pressure lakes and ponds.
Disliked the same thing about the trigon casting rod. Love the spinning rod though. Will certainly check out that dark Wolfe. I currently use an SLX Bfs and it just doesn’t do BFS like I want. Doesn’t do lower weights well at all.
I'm getting tired of black and silver. Need some color for my reel's just nice to look and see the one you need right away. Look and grab just faster. Bright colors 🎣
I think the DWU is a GREAT value, I love the FF01 for sub 1gr, and the Aldebaran22 bfs for 1/32-1/20 neds! The Curado bfs is for my wacky rigs, even though it's a bfs reel, it works perfectly for senkos! Now that I think about it, the Curado BFS was perfect for what bfs lures were at the time it came out. Now BFS lures being lighter than ever, i can see how the curado performs on the power bfs range. Love the BFS game!
BFS has always been about super light stuff. The US market just has a distorted idea of what "finesse" is, thinking that it's anything you use a spinning rod for. Senkos are the perfect example. Just the 5" Senko weighs almost 3/8 oz. I throw weightless Senkos as far as you would ever need to on a MH casting rod with a normal casting reel. There's nothing "BFS" about it. Shimano gets it, too. They label their ML power rods as "BFS-A" for "BFS American". They're meant to replace a spinning rod for what most US bass anglers use a spinning rod for. Let's face it, most US bass anglers use a spinning rod for drop shots and shaky heads. The Shimano BFS-A rods are perfect for that. For real BFS as it's understood in Japan, they're not even in the conversation. For what most US anglers would need, the SLX MGL 70 is a WAY better option for way less money than the Curado BFS.
@helotaxi -great explanation! I'm afraid the US manufacturing may not catch onto 1/32 range BFS in time. My buddy keeps telling me finesse is the same, bit I have to tell him it's not. What I was getting at earlier is that even though senkos are about 3/8oz and definitely not bfs, the curado bfs handles that weight range for me, and I use the aldebaran 22s for the bfs. I always did find the Shimano expride bfs too stiff, so what you said makes total sense
I am not 100% sure on the BFS to be honest. I still like using the spinning combo for Light and Ultra Light fishing its what I started off with and a 5'4" rod and 4# mono. I would like to get into BFS but cant find a setup I like yet. I prefer 2 piece rods just for portability I dont have a truck and its easier to brake it down and put it in the trunk.
Update.. Thank Gents for the recommendations. I bought the Zephr just to dabble in the BFS. I am 'hooked' Darn you guys lol 9 months after buying it I am going to upgrade the bearings to the Roro bearings. I am also using a ML KastKing 7' Paragee II and works well for 1/10 oz to 1/14 oz I would like to get a light or a ultra light rod for this, but for now I am really happy with it.
@@brianpierson7708 have a trio of the Aldebarans and a Steez Air. The only reason that I don't have it the other way around is that the Aldebaran is so dang affordable right now from Japan. The Steez is a better reel but even with the current exchange rate it's almost 2x the price. It's better, but it isn't so much better that I would spend 2x as much. At US price for the Aldebaran, I'd buy the Steez every time.
I have a love/hate relationship with that reel, as I can get it to cast super light lures, but I have to use 2lb line and the right rod, but it only casts 15ft. The part I hate is the line gets caught between the spool and frame!
Yeah, was a nice little rod but the tip on mine just splintered. Not surprised as I've caught hundreds of bass on it this year. Check out Old18 BFS rods! Made in the USA. Lots of models at different price points.
Man, I watched this entire vid and i don't even know how to fish a bait caster😮. What is wrong with me! Don't answer if this is a stupid question, but do you like a certain spinning reel for your new MB stick? I was going to pick one up for crappie fishing in the spring.
Well, I have had my Team Lew's hyper mag speed spool since it first came out and have had it on a 6' UL and a 7'6" heavey. 1/32 oz. Is no problem casting 30- 35 yds easily.
That is totally up to you! We think BFS is a lot of fun. Not 100% necessary, but 110% fun. We love both BFS and ultralight spinning. So it's all preference.
doubt that would happen with 2-10lb line. i mean if you were fishing 65lb braid, 20lbs locked down drag and pulling peacock bass out of submerged trees. possibly.
The soloking Acura hicc 50 pro (short spool shaft) is a stunner at under $40 with 2 spools (bfs and deep bfs). Haibo has 2 metal frame (aluminum arise elite and magnesium air ultra). They both rival the 22 Alde BFS. But this is a great bfs video, well done!
Man I went all out and got the Daiwa Steez Air paired with my Megabass P5 Kasumi Six Eleven. It’s a dream set up since I mainly just toss hard baits on light braid (10#) Suffix 831
I just got back from Montana fishing small rivers with low flows,i will use this rod and reel once a year could you recommed a rod and reel for small trout, thx
bump'n an older vid, what is ur current feel for a middle of the road set-up for my son who is rough with equipment... primarily throwing 1/6 1/8oz crank paits poppers. thanks.
@@aaanglers awesome, thank you so much for the quick reply. would u upgrade the bearings straight away & what length/action model is the 1 piece kestrel your refering to?
@paulglass7268 already got the preoder on that lol but im thinking of taking the bfs jump but also in the group of people that "cry once buy once" crowd and save up for thr thing that i would mostly move up into. So with the faster mojo would i still be able to throw the 1/32 stuff you think?
@@noahbeu1515 yup should be able to. The Majestic XT is a fun rod too and handles light weight. Tsurinoya rods are a better budget option I’ve heard a lot of folks recommend too
Until this week, I haven’t spooled anything less than 16 lb fluoro in years. Taking the “leap of faith” and spooling a 10 lb spool. 😬 But if I ever make the bfs leap, this video will be a major resource
When it comes to the reel I agree with the Dark Wolf for an amazing entry level reel. However I have had trouble finding them. The Zephyr is great with tossing 1/8oz but I wouldn’t go lower than that. The best reel that I have and would recommend to anyone that wants to spend more than the Dark Wolf or Zephyr, this reel is the Diawa Gekkibijin which is close to being like the Diawa shown in this video. I also have a Shimano Sensilite 7ft light. It will handle 1/16oz very nice. I have not thrown a 1/32oz with it yet. And I am also now looking for a new BFS rod that can handle the 1/32oz jigs.
@timtweet8149 fyi BFS wasn’t even designed to replace ultralight setups, all these TH-camrs are misinformed about BFS. It was designed to fish for large fish with smaller baits, not trout and panfish. Of course anyone can fish it however they choose but BFS and Ultralight Baitcaster fishing is 2 different things.
I won a “Kastking Kestrel Elite” yesterday 8.4 get ratio. Looks legit . Need to find a good rod combo for it . Was thinking top water/light flipping cover with it mainly..any suggestions?
From someone who fishes a lot Just spend the extra couple hundred for the Shimano Aldebaran for a reel. Makes life easy so you don't have any backlash issues and cast super far.
Well I just bought the kastking kestrel elite hoping to be able to cast 1/32 lures 😑 in your opinion would it be better to return it and buy the Daiwa or upgrade the kestrel in some way?
Unfortunately casting a 1/32 on that reel just isn't going to happen. I'd consider returning and trying the new Daiwa BFS or Salamandura. The Ark Gravity BFS is another good option.
Just found a jawbone BFS REEL on a bank while on a kayak adventure in NorCal, never used one but noticed that it’s missing the “tension” brake knob” anyone know where I can find a replacement ?? It feels fine and looks operational otherwise. Looking for assistance.
Similarly, DON'T Buy A BFS Rod Or Reel Until You ... experience a spinning reel with mainline braid to a fluoro leader, on a rod of equal length, power and action.
I fish UL spinning all year round, I love it. I was gifted a BFS, and honestly I love using the casting gear. It's been years since I've used baitcasters because I got bored with them, I mean on a MH you can just drag a 2 lb bass in with ease really. To any UL angler I'd encourage trying BFS, it's a blast.
I dunno why are you saying that the dark wolf ultra has the original FTB brake system against the Curado BFS, that is blasphemy! tsurinoya isn't even the first to copy it, fishband GH100 first copied from the aldebaran BFS way back.. the dark wolf ultra are basically copies of the copy with a lighter and smaller spool.. 😂
Available on Amazon, the Kingdom Micro Monster is a definite step up from the Zephyr, and the Bearking Zuescaster looks to be a clone of the Dark Wolf for $65 and a massive improvement from the Zephyr. The Zephyr is OK but the biggest issue that I have with it is the drag. The two I have came with the Bellville washers nested rather than face to face which meant that the drag was either on or off, nothing in between. Even once that was fixed, the Bellville washers are way too thick for where the drag range on a BFS reel should be, which combined with having a double stack drag means that the drag is way too much and ramps up way too quickly for light line. I'll stick with the Bearking in the affordable range going forward.
Never heard of Akit and can’t seem to find them on the old interwebs… No need for the jab about BFE. You know we are down to try everything, always have been.
I got a Zephyr and it’s an okay reel. I did get another budget the Elf/Genius which is the upgrade of the Dark Wolf as many know, and it can totally go UL to up 1/8 no problem. I got my budget reels now. I want either an Ark or flight feather as my mid tier and want a Gekkabijn as my top tier.
I find it weird that the best of the best that everyone who fishes BFS in this country and Japan have. They fish with and love sponsored or not. These guys are saying want do things they people do every day worldwide. And everyone is using 2# to 5# FC but these guys are using what looks to be 10#-12# PE to 6#-8# FC on and short rods?? You put a shimano on a MB 7’6” BFS an 3#-4# FC an a1/32 OZ FC and hammer out a cast 25 yards but can pin point cast 15 yards I do it all the time
Go cheap or go expensive. The inbetween is nothing to recommend. Soloking accura, tsurinoya dark wolf, seasir M1 or go up to a for example shimano aldeberan.
Love my curado bfs on a 6'9" med light for jerk baits, hair jigs and its my salt and fresh setup for sure but theres definitely a large great selection for diffrent applications.. The kastking zephyr with new bearings is amazing for the price 😊😊

It's a 4' 6" rod, 2-6lb line, Lure WT:1/16-3/16oz. 😁
Shorty, nice!
Did you do the upgrades on your reels or send them to a shop.Thanks.im lookinf at bearings for my curado
We did them ourselves
Look at Paul and keeping it reel! 😂 I have been waiting for this video to drop! Thank you for the break down and thoughts!
🤙🏼🤙🏼
That value combo might be what I’m going to get this summer.
Rad!
Awesome!
You can get the KING of BFS the Shimano Aldebaran BFS XG from Asian Portal for $262 right now plus about $10 for shipping!!! Absolutely a steal! I’ve ordered rods and reels from them and there absolutely Legit!!
Nice!
The Dark wolf is what everyone is copying? the DWU is a copy itself of Shimano and Daiwa. Also there is a 119g reel available now, lighter than the flightfeather (125)
Good to know!
My son has a stock standard Kastking Zephyr on a 5ft6 Pioneer Evo 2 rod. He regularly uses 1/32 once Eagle Claw jig heads with tiny zoom Minnow plastics or Keitech paddle tails and casts just fine...
Well, I just learned a heck of a lot watching this video. Thanks guys!👊🏻
🙌
I love my BFS gear! I have a Alderbaran and a BFS Edge rod. I absolutely catch tanks on that set up. Biggest so far is a 4# bass but multiple 3's as well and a crap ton of 2's and smaller. Just a great way to catch fish in pressure lakes and ponds.
I own both an Aldebaran and a Curado. Honestly, if I had to cast them both blindfolded, I don't think I'd be able to tell the difference.
I have one Sensilite rod but I cant find another! Seems to be discontinued.
Yeah, we found that out well after filming. It’s a shame
Didnt think I needed a BFS setup but that Diawa St Croix combo look sweet
It’s gorgeous
Disliked the same thing about the trigon casting rod. Love the spinning rod though.
Will certainly check out that dark Wolfe. I currently use an SLX Bfs and it just doesn’t do BFS like I want. Doesn’t do lower weights well at all.
But at least the SLX BFS is priced appropriately, unlike the Curado.
I'm getting tired of black and silver. Need some color for my reel's just nice to look and see the one you need right away. Look and grab just faster. Bright colors 🎣
Thanks for this brides guys. Just purchased the Shimano bfs. I’m fine with throwing the 1/8 jigs. But will definitely lean into looking at the others.
As far as rods old 18 bfs rods are my favorite I've used 4 different price ranges and all made in America in texas
In my humble opinion the Daiwa Steez Air and Daiwa Gekkabijin are the best BFS reels on the market.
Super nice options
I have heard good things about the Gekkabijin.
Have you tried the ss air
Aldbaren BFS
@@brianpierson7708 have a trio of the Aldebarans and a Steez Air. The only reason that I don't have it the other way around is that the Aldebaran is so dang affordable right now from Japan. The Steez is a better reel but even with the current exchange rate it's almost 2x the price. It's better, but it isn't so much better that I would spend 2x as much. At US price for the Aldebaran, I'd buy the Steez every time.
Zypher is not that bad and i cast 1/32 easy on it. Just need the right rod. Tons of rods out there that r cheap that make the zypher a beast
Not sure how you set it up, but would love to see how you made that work. I’ve tried everything and it was not possible.
I have a love/hate relationship with that reel, as I can get it to cast super light lures, but I have to use 2lb line and the right rod, but it only casts 15ft. The part I hate is the line gets caught between the spool and frame!
The Shimano Sensilite casting rod has been discontinued for months. Good luck finding one.
Didn't know that
Yeah, was a nice little rod but the tip on mine just splintered. Not surprised as I've caught hundreds of bass on it this year. Check out Old18 BFS rods! Made in the USA. Lots of models at different price points.
Never heard of them before, but I will look into them!
Man, I watched this entire vid and i don't even know how to fish a bait caster😮. What is wrong with me! Don't answer if this is a stupid question, but do you like a certain spinning reel for your new MB stick? I was going to pick one up for crappie fishing in the spring.
The Daiwa Fuego in a 500 or 1000 size would be awesome. I have an Okuma ITX on mine right now. The Daiwa should be on sale for black friday tho
@@aaanglers Grazie, it's time to shop!
Well, I have had my Team Lew's hyper mag speed spool since it first came out and have had it on a 6' UL and a 7'6" heavey. 1/32 oz. Is no problem casting 30- 35 yds easily.
Is it worth getting a bfs baitcasting setup if you already have several higher end ultralight spinning setups?
That is totally up to you! We think BFS is a lot of fun. Not 100% necessary, but 110% fun. We love both BFS and ultralight spinning. So it's all preference.
Have you ever removed the magnet from the curado bfs?
Not yet
@@paulglass7268 I'm going to get a trout rod for my curado and remove the magnet see if I can sling a mepps. I will let ya know how it goes.
Awesome!! congratulations and thank you! it really open my eyes. Keep on your great advice!!!
If the DW offered Atleast an aluminum frame. And cheaper out other places I’m 100% down. Just a lil worried about frame twist to breaking
doubt that would happen with 2-10lb line. i mean if you were fishing 65lb braid, 20lbs locked down drag and pulling peacock bass out of submerged trees. possibly.
I love st croix mojo bass rods i have 2 mh spinning rods in that lineup and love them
Really good value
The soloking Acura hicc 50 pro (short spool shaft) is a stunner at under $40 with 2 spools (bfs and deep bfs). Haibo has 2 metal frame (aluminum arise elite and magnesium air ultra). They both rival the 22 Alde BFS.
But this is a great bfs video, well done!
🙌
Man I went all out and got the Daiwa Steez Air paired with my Megabass P5 Kasumi Six Eleven. It’s a dream set up since I mainly just toss hard baits on light braid (10#) Suffix 831
I find the limit for my sensilite/ curado combo is 1/10th
I just got back from Montana fishing small rivers with low flows,i will use this rod and reel once a year could you recommed a rod and reel for small trout, thx
TFO Trout Panfish Rod for Spinning. Check out these rods from Bait Finesse Empire for BFS: baitfinesseempire.com/product-category/rods/trout-rods/
The roro bfs spool on the slx and the curado make a ton of difference for light lures. Half the weight of the stock spool.
bump'n an older vid, what is ur current feel for a middle of the road set-up for my son who is rough with equipment... primarily throwing 1/6 1/8oz crank paits poppers. thanks.
Kastking Kestrel combo all day. $120 reel, $90 Rod.
@@aaanglers awesome, thank you so much for the quick reply. would u upgrade the bearings straight away & what length/action model is the 1 piece kestrel your refering to?
It’s not one piece, it’s 2 or 3. Id go light action
Whats rod would you pick for just throwing mule stuff?
Bfs: go with the Majestic or the faster mojo. If spinning grab our ultralight from Monsterbass!
Tsurinoya rods are a better budget option I’ve heard a lot of folks recommend too
Have you guys tried Calcutta conquest bfs? How does it compare to salamandura? Is it worth 2-3x the price ?
Nope, cuz it’s too fancy for our taste 😂
What are both your thoughts on the Old 18 buoyancy rod, the 7' ultra light mod fast action rod?
Looks neat! We haven't used them. I tried to reach out, but we never got connected.
Good stuff! I'll stick with my ultralight spinning combos.
@@EddieLindsay681 Already knew that. To each his own.
Crazy.. I use my ZYPHER specifically for “heavier” or light lures .. specially mini cranks
I won a “Kastking Kestrel Elite” yesterday 8.4 get ratio. Looks legit . Need to find a good rod combo for it . Was thinking top water/light flipping cover with it mainly..any suggestions?
yeah, flipping and top water is a good way to go. Stick to 1/16 to 1/4 oz lures and you will be happy with it!
I have the kastking zephyr bfs baitcaster reel if I changed the bearings would that make it better thank you for reel information
It is a major improvement
From someone who fishes a lot Just spend the extra couple hundred for the Shimano Aldebaran for a reel. Makes life easy so you don't have any backlash issues and cast super far.
Man I’ve been so close to buy the zillion platform Salamandura so many times such a sick looking reel.
Love the videos keep up the work
What reel should I pick Dark wolf or Fishband GH100 for ultralight fishing
we only have experience with the dark wolf, and it has been a great reel.
@@aaanglers ok thank you!
@@aaanglers so is it just called Daiwa BFS?
Yes
Just currently getting into BFS but have an older model Calcutta 50, would this be a decent starter reel?
For sure!
Anyone know where I can buy the sensalite online?
Got mine on fish usa
Casting version is discontinued. Can still get spinning rods.
Is BFS reel about the size and weight or build vs a normal bait caster?
Just found a jawbone BFS REEL on a bank while on a kayak adventure in NorCal, never used one but noticed that it’s missing the “tension” brake knob” anyone know where I can find a replacement ?? It feels fine and looks operational otherwise. Looking for assistance.
you would have to look up if they have any manufacturer replacements. Nice find though!
@@aaanglers appreciate the information! I’ll take a look and see what I can find
Kistler has a great BFS rod
aldebaran from digitaka is 250
no need to upgrade
Interesting
I really like my Alphas Air too!
The lfx BFS is around 170$
Try Lama glass X 11 trout rod .4 to 8 lb…excellent
It wasn’t what was meant to be said. It was just said. Happens sometimes
Shimano Sensalight!!!! Do the reviews trust me you will be surprised 😊
Zeus blows away the Zephyr from the box .
I cast from micro crankbaits to 1/2oz floppers on 10lb braid on a Magic L light casting rod .
Silver creek air with a p5 destroyer pop x stick and you in like flynn
Akit better cheaper options than the Kastking Zephyr...then again BFE doesn't sell them so I guess they won't be mentioned here
What options?
Never heard of Akit and can’t seem to find them on the old interwebs… No need for the jab about BFE. You know we are down to try everything, always have been.
@@aaanglers sorry that was a typo, it was meant to say "alot better options"
@@paulglass7268 soloking Acura, Seasir Cast X, bearking Zeus just to mention a few
I am considering giving bfs a try.
It’s a ton of fun
I got a Zephyr and it’s an okay reel. I did get another budget the Elf/Genius which is the upgrade of the Dark Wolf as many know, and it can totally go UL to up 1/8 no problem. I got my budget reels now. I want either an Ark or flight feather as my mid tier and want a Gekkabijn as my top tier.
Solid list
@@paulglass7268Thanks just need to get my rods squared away next. Got an Kastking Kestrel Feather for my budget set up with the elf.
I never realized 1/32 was a thing. 1/8 seems super light to me!
Try a 1/80 oz lure, they get crazy light
You guys are the goats
Appreciate ya sir!
You put a shimano on a MB 7’6” BFS an 3#-4# FC an a1/32 OZ FC and hammer out a cast 25 yards but can pin point cast 15 yards I do it all the time
?
Go cheap or go expensive. The inbetween is nothing to recommend.
Soloking accura, tsurinoya dark wolf, seasir M1 or go up to a for example shimano aldeberan.
Love my curado bfs on a 6'9" med light for jerk baits, hair jigs and its my salt and fresh setup for sure but theres definitely a large great selection for diffrent applications.. The kastking zephyr with new bearings is amazing for the price 😊😊
youguys are awesome
