  • PART 2: Dobyns Sierra BFS Rod On The Water Review and Test. I cast a variety of lures with the Dobyns Sierra Ultra Finesse 700c. I test the rods reaction to crankbaits, structure sensitivity and other small but important features when selecting a rod.
This rod seems so far to be a great rod for pond hopping or any type of shore fishing. It is pretty versatile and should eliminate the need to carry multiple rods around when shore fishing. Not saying this rod couldn't be used on a boat pitching weightless plastics to docks but, shore fishing is what stands out to me so far.
A good reel to pair with this rod is the Shimano Curado BFS. At $189, it is a great price for a BFS reel from a reputable reel manufacturer and...is available to purchase in the USA. Companies like Roro Lure also make shallow spools for many existing "normal" baitcasting reels so, that may be an easy option to get into BFS. Many reels like the Daiwa SV reels are pretty capable of casting most bass plastics weightless without modification.
This is the first mainstream rod to be specifically made for BFS fishing. I hope that this rod create competition among other rod makers to start to bring quality USA market BFS rods to the market.
I got mine from Bait Finesse Empire:
    baitfinesseempire.com/dobyns-...
Instagram: @baitfinesseempire ( baitfinesseempire), a new finesse fishing oriented web-based retailer opened the USA mid-April 2021. The shop carries a ton of Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) lures, lines and other gear. They also carry tackle from the USA and elsewhere. I am excite to partner with them to spread the love of BFS to the mainstream market. I will continue to share unbiased reviews of products with you all an encourage your feedback on products so Bait Finesse Empire can ensure they are stocking what the people want.
Dobyns Sierra Ultra Finesse Casting SA 700c Rod Specs:
    7', 1/16-5/16 (1.5-8gr), 2-8lb line.
The Sierra Ultra Finesse or BFS casting rods are a new addition for 2021. This series was built strictly due to angler request and the growing popularity. Ultra-Light bass fishing has become very popular over the last few years and we have heard from our anglers to bring back an Ultra-Light Finesse casting rod designed to throw baits as light as 1/16oz (1.5g) and using 2-8lb line to target bass, panfish, crappie and trout..
These models will be in lengths of 7′ and 7’4″ and will be one-piece models. These rods are very small in diameter and super lightweight. Be on the lookout for these at a Dobyns dealer this fall.
    FEATURES:
    High modulus graphite blanks
    Fuji Micro guides
    Fuji reel seats
    Kevlar wrapping
    Balanced and splined blanks
Portugal cork - Split handle designs
    Solid carbon tip sections

Had a chance to fish my Dobyns SA 700C this week over two days on a fairly large midwest river. I was throwing 1/8oz hair jigs for Smallmoutn Bass. As it turned out the first fish I hooked took me by complete surprise , a 32" Northern Pike that was over 10lbs. The second fish was a 28" inch Musky on the same 1/8oz hair jig. I was quite fortunate to land both fish and although not particularly suited for fish of that size and power, the Dobyns rod handled them amazingly well due to the impressive backbone. I didn't catch anything else that day, but two days later on the river I caught a half dozen Smallmouth from 2 lbs to just shy of 4 lbs. on the same hair jig. I am completely satisfied with the design and performance of the Dobyns Utra Finesse SA 700C. The tip loads an 1/8 oz jig beautifully and makes long accurate cast effortless. It's nice and light in hand and has as you mentioned , near perfect balance.
It will take several months, but I have it told Mr. Dobyns will also be adding a 6'9" model.

I also live up north and have those toothy critters. did the backbone still have some give under pressure from those fish surging by the boat?

    • @michaelmotch6271
      @michaelmotch6271 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@HobieWanKenobi With 6lb test mono (Stren Magnathin) that was the prevailing limitation to how much pressure I could exert on the fish. I certainly had no ability to horse those big fish, but did feel like the line and rod had enough power to control the fish to a reasonable degree. The area of the river I caught them in had no cover or potential snags and was up to 10 foot deep so I could let the fish run . If there was cover or big boulders around I don't think I could have controlled the fish enough to stop them from surging into it and breaking me off. That said, the action of the rod and the transition into the backbone feels just right for handling both bigger and smaller fish. I fly fish quite a bit from 5wt trout rods up to 10wt saltwater rods so I am very familiar with a "mushy" feeling rod, the Dobyns is not. Frankly, the Dobyns rod impresses the heck out of me in how versatile it is and pairs so well with the Daiwa Alphas Air TW. Seems pretty ideal for the finesse baits I throw in a river setting.
Just a correction, you list the specs of the rod as 1/16oz to 5/8oz.....it is 1/16oz to 5/16oz actually.
Love your BFS content , keep em coming!!

I love the detailed breakdown , very well done which is why I'm a new subscriber. I saw at a local store an Abu Garcia Fantista in a ML that was 6'10" and listed a weight range of 1/8 to 1/2 oz in the specs . I 'm looking for something about 6'6" to 6'10" length to throw small topwaters primarily in the 1/8 to 1/4 oz weight range and though the Dobyns you reviewed looks like it would do a great job it seemed a little longer than I wanted. The Abu Fantista though listed as a fast action rod seemed like it had enough bend in the upper 1/3 of the rod to make it a viable option for topwaters especially if using mono which has some built in stretch. That said the Fantista is around $ 300 which is a lot to spend on a topwater rod and I saw that Abu makes similar offering in the Veritas PLX TE line -up. By chance are you familiar with either rod and if so do you feel it would perform well for the desired application ? I would be using a Curado BFS reel in my case which I already own . I know the video is a couple of months old but if you get an opportunity to respond I would love your recommendation or if there is a better option I would be open to that as well. Thanks

    Hey Hobie,
First time viewer and subscriber. Thank you for giving me the information and what I needed to know and learn about this rod. I have been researching on building a Kastking Zephyr BFS reel with the Dobyns Sierra Ultra Rod for my BFS and sometimes crappie setup. I have been targetting specifically Ned rigs, Shaky Head, Senko, Weightless, Texas Rig, Wacky Rig concept and building my tackle arsenal with various colors and actions. I was wondering what line test and type is the sweet spot for bass since this is rated 2-8lb rod? The BFS reel im getting has 4/75, 6/65, 8/50 for mono and 15/75 20/65 25/50 for braid. I have only a fraction of an ideal of what I want for bass but for crappie I think 2lb test would be the way to go to give it more sensitivity. Also, 7' or 7'4? I only understand that it gives a bit more casting distance?
Edit: What is at the end of your line that lets you switch lures so quick?

    • @HobieWanKenobi
      @HobieWanKenobi  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey,
Thanks for the view and sub. I like 4lb for crappie and such. If fishing around cover, it helps out having the extra strength.
This rod would be ok for crappie but, not ideal. I really like this rod for finesse bass fishing, probably my favorite I have tried this far.
I have not used the 7'4 model. The 7ft I find to be more versatile and better to use shore fishing, kayak fishing too. 7'4" can be a great rod from a boat for sure

I have one paired with a Pixy TypeR. Fished it on 4lb CXX. I can't imagine it throwing 1/16oz on this stick. The tip feels too fast for that. Tinkered around and 1/8oz and 3/16oz gave me the best distance and control. Gonna try it with a Curado 50E a with an Avail spool and 6lb braid to see if it would do better for ned rigs.

  • @realjeffgarrett

The hook keeper placement is definitely on purpose. Gary Dobyns is borderline fanatical about keeper placement. He’ll admit it himself. I love Dobyns rods for bass fishing. I’m really glad Gary hopped on the BFS train relatively early (at least for bass rod companies). How do you think it would throw the smallest Rapala Floating Minnow (F-3). Can’t remember what that weighs in grams, but Rapala’s website says the F-3 and the F-5 are both 1/16oz. I’d like to use the rod for finesse bass baits as well as creek fishing. I like those little floaters in the creeks around me

Hobie-Wan Kenobi Right on. I’ll check it out. On another note, what do think the future of bass fishing with spinning rods looks like? A lot of guys won’t even fish finesse (or at least won’t admit to it) because of the “fairy wand” stigma. I still use spinning rods, but if I have the option to fish ultra light baits with a casting set up, I’d much rather do that simply for the comfort of fishing a casting set up verses a spinning rod. I could see a world a decade from now where spinning rods are hardly even used anymore, except for maybe super light line applications and super deep applications like drop shotting highland reservoirs, etc. Interested to hear your thoughts. Perhaps you already talked about this in another video that I missed? Keep up the great work.

@@realjeffgarrett I think spinning rods will always have a place. I think BFS more so expands that "gray area" of where baits can be cast with spinning and casting gear. If BFS catches on in the USA, that will really get things moving. Japan been on it for years. 8lb fluorocarbon much easier to manage on a BFS reel than a spinning reel.

The extra fast speaks about the tip. Under more pressure, the main rod blank bends similar to a moderate tapered rod. The 7'4" is just fine if fishing from shore or a boat

@@HobieWanKenobi Ok cool thanks man. 👊🏽 Was just curious. Haven’t really been too impressed with my casting distance so far on smaller baits, probably need more practice with it, such a different release point… and probably don’t have the reel dialed in yet either, but was just wondering if maybe the rod choice was an issue and if I should have gotten the shorter “fast” model. I fish mostly from shore and am a taller dude haha so I tend to get longer rods regardless, it’s very nice, but yeah that “extra fast moderate” label on there threw me for a loop when I first saw it. 😂

That rod will be good. Distance depends on a few factors but, as long as the lure gets where you need it, that's what matters

I plan to buy this rod and which reel would you recommend between a gekkabijin or aldabarian? I fish mostly lakes, rivers for BFS bass, and once in awhile streams out west for trout. I am primarily switching over from ned rig type spinning to BFS..love casting reels.

I'd slap a Gekkabijin AIR TW on it. Mine has been great for bass fishing. This rod may be a bit long/powerful for trout streams.

In stream fishing the Gekkabijin with bushtrail line what roro spool would you recommend the standard or senior? I have a spectra rays 5ft 1 rod. I want to make accurate casts with a set up that has some give since my rod is not glass
