“We all had drilled into our heads ever since we were young that we need a lot of protein.” I actually never had anyone talk about or lecture me about protein until I became a vegan and all of a sudden everyone I knew was a nutritionist and a protein expert.

I'm a long time vegetarian, and I started taking a DHA supplement after watching another one of your video's several years a go and I could really feel a difference. I felt like a switch got turned on. DHA is an expensive supplement but it I could really feel a difference, Thanks John, and your garden is gorgeous! I like in a city, and all I have is a grass plant for my cats!

We can get all the protein we need from an uncooked, plant-based diet *but* only if we are active enough to warrant eating an appropriate amount of food. This is something that should be mentioned. If a person is sedentary because they are coming from a sedentary lifestyle and had been eating the Typical Western Diet, and they now discover that this diet is unhealthy, so they transition to either a healthier or healthiest diet, they could be so caught up in learning about their new diet, that they haven't yet learned the importance of the other equally important requirements of robust future health. So if they are not as active as we're meant to be, but they eat according to their caloric needs, they'll eat enough food to supply those calories, but may NOT eat enough food to provide enough of a certain EAA or EFA. Although this is the exception and not the rule, an insufficiency *can* happen. And although not as bad as a deficiency, an insufficiency, if it goes on long enough, can negatively affect health, albeit very slowly. But conditions of ill health that slowly creep up on us are often the most insidious kind, because they're not as noticeable as the more acute symptoms. Food for thought.

health101DOTorg so does this mean that you do not recommend DHA and EFA supplementation for a person following a Robert Morse book raw diet with 6 miles of walking (or equivalent) per day?

    • @health101DOTorg
      @health101DOTorg 6 ปีที่แล้ว

The only time I might recommend additional DHA and EPA is for a pregnant women, as per the philosophy of "better to be safe than sorry". Otherwise, if you're eating a balanced healthiest diet, this shouldn't be needed.

Yesterday, I checked out the new Atkins cookbook at the public library. It was filled with photos of delicious looking plant foods (ignoring the non-vegan bits which were surprisingly small looking on the plate). They also included recipes for two vegan smoothies, two green smoothie bowls and a Buddha bowl. I think it is apparent that we are starting to win the debate :)

Been a fan of yours for many years. When you used to film in 480p lol. I follow all based starchy diet now. I get all my protein with my rice. I respect you very much, but you don't need that much plants. Potatoes, rice a few veggies and you're good.

Still love the videos and still love the many plants we can eat that you recommend.
Please people watch Dr John McDougal 1h talk about these topics. I was long time raw diet eating nuts and still had nasty acne. Now I eat 95% starchy foods with few veggies and my acne is gone! No oil in my diet only 4%

Also, another example of the healthiest source of protein is Lentil Sprouts / Mung Bean Sprouts / Various Sprouts.
Spirulina has been proven to be toxic in some cases according to nutritionfacts. Chlorella seems to be safe though and still contains alot of protein. But since you should limit your daily consumption to around 10g. You will only get ~5g's of protein from that......
If you put 1DL of dried lentils to sprout. You get 200 Grams of sprouted lentils in total which equals to about ~45-50grams of protein

I heard from several sources, that we recycle protein and most people only need something around 20 grams of protein per day ... even on a raw vegan diet, according to chronometer, I have a hard time keeping my protein intake under 40 grams... I take this as an indication that no more than 50 to 60 grams of protein needs to be consumed... and my understanding, is that somewhere around 60% average protein from fresh fruits and veg consumed is synthesized, so if you are getting around fifty grams of protein dietary intake, that should be plenty... people who train hard physically or who work hard physically, may benefit from more and would likely consume more food, thus more protein... but, it’s not too hard to get ... I am doing a low protein diet as a strategy to get rid of a large fibroid tumor and until recently, I wasn’t really sure how low to aim for... essentially, it is methionine I want to restrict and I decided to try to keep that under 30% of my rda, according to chronometer... and it usually translates to around forty grams of total protein

i know raw vegans like their amino acids much
but i somehow think that there is some sort of nitrogen requirement too (thats the thing thats not in aminoacids aka non proteinous foods)
as long term raw vegan look at nitrogen rich foods and tell me honestly that u dont want to eat them
not sure if there is science to back this up but i know what i know

  • @sooooooooDark

if any1 wants a good protein source on a raw vegan diet - go for pumpkin seeds
they r also high in magnesium (everyone is deficient who doesnt supplement or takes superfoods) zinc (typical raw vegan deficiency) and potassium (always nice to have)
and no fat doesnt make u fat, except if u mix it with carbs
    so dont fear pumpkin seeds
they r also probably the most satiating food there is....im a monster when it comes to hunger and i could barely eat 100g (dry) soaked in 1 sitting

    • @philphilphil

rocco petitti Synthesis of fatty acids happens in cytoplasm until 16 C atoms are reached (fatty acids are formed by adding unit to unit and each unit has 2 carbon atoms - a unit is called acetil CoA). The final product is called palmitate (16 C atoms). Prolongation of palmitate happens on one particular organell of the cell and then it can be prolonged to 18 C (stearate). There is difference between plant and animal organism, in mean of possession of specific enzymes. Animal (human) organism doesn't have the enzyme which will form double bonds in fatty acids (make unsaturated fats), which means the human body can't form alpha linoleic acid, which is precursor for EPA and DHA. So we say linoleic acid is an essential fatty acid bc it can't be produced by our body, but also are EPA and DHA, bc they are produced from linoleic acid. You can take sufficient amount of linoleic acid (sources like chia, flaxseed, hemp) and you'll be fine bc it can be converted to EPA and DHA. Or you can also take EPA and DHA directly from certain sources - fish, algae oil etc. (which I would not recommend for various other reasons.)

To people saying we don't need much protein because breastmilk is low in protein..... I did some calculations...
A one month old baby weighs on average 3.8kg.
It drinks about 750ml breastmilk a day.
    Breastmilk is 0.9% protein.
So, that's 6.75g protein per day.
6.75g of protein for a 3.8kg baby is *almost 2g per kg* That's quite a lot.
Granted, we are not babies anymore, but to say a baby hardly gets any protein is ridiculous. Also, if your body is very damaged, doing a lot of manual labour or you're underweight, you'll need extra protein to rebuild it. One size doesn't fit everyone.
    (I got the 0.9% value from. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/392766/
I presume the 0.9% value is by weight, not by %of calories, because the other values... E. G fats and carbs did not add up to 100% but around 15% total).

there is actually a nice thing about things such as oils (which is why i consider them whole foods, just as juices):
they make u able to manipulate ur macros as u wish
    for example:
instead of eating coconuts whole (a "white" food as ud call it - but ye i know u like them regardless...well they r damn tasty i know) u can have coconut oil and the carb content (17% of total coconut calories) u can instead eat foods that r much more powerful
for example 1 coconut may got around 1000 calories (5% protein 17% carb or so) so instead of wasting 22% of ur calories on weak versions of carbs and proteins u can take some proper protein such as creatine or BCAAs (i know - not even whole foods but still...raw vegan kidneys r underworked anyways so...) and goji berries or blueberries for the carbs
    manipulating nature at its finest
one day ppl will realize there is no such thing as whole foods - no one eats the whole rice plant including roots
dr greger is a blind fool
    nwo'd af without knowing
probably infertile with his long term low fat approach
