    Hell yes! You seriously rock! The research is totally fleshing this out now. Greens are plenty easily turned into long-chain omega 3's EPA and DHA by our bodies. This is basically why I believe you and everyone else can thrive extremely well on a fruitarian diet with plenty of greens.

    Your videos have such great humor in them! I appreciate all the videos you make, so whatever you decide to upload, I will watch! I'm actually really interested in how you eat, because I have never heard of a raw began eating that much lettuce, but at the local co op I work at I can get heads of organic lettuce for super cheap so I may start mono mealing them

    Hey. First of all, thank you for sharing this. I'm a new vegan, and trying to figure all of this stuff out. Sooo much conflicting data, even from vegan doctors, who are convinced that they need to eat flax, worry about omega ratios, and pop b12 ... like Dr. Michael Greger. Anyway, good to know you're doing fine. So, my question ... you say that your omegas came from fruits and greens, and but I'm wondering if you intentionally eat foods high in omega 3, like flax, chia, hemp, walnuts or purslane? Thanks again.

    Thanks for posting this. I have been vegan for 25 years and seem to be pretty darn healthy, but now with Obamacare kicking in I thought I should have a basic health check. I would love to know the results of the fatty acids blood test, but of course it is not part of the standard procedure with the blood test, which means that I have to pay $200 for it. Ouch! Do you think it is useful to do it anyway? Between 15 and 10 years ago I was raw food vegan, but now I eat some cooked stuff to (to increase my local food consumption). My diet is still basically 90% fruits and veggies with no weird protein replacers and no supplements, except for B12. Thanking you in advance for your input!

      Yeah, people seem to lose their moral convictions whenever they get older (or compromise more or become less dogmatic or however you want to look at it). I have always had strong moral convictions to take care of the planet (e.g. war tax resister, obligatory bike commuter) and even though the planet is going to hell in a handbasket it still does not stop me from trying to do the right thing.
      By the way, my ratio turned out to be 1 to 18, so I started taking Ovega 3 (algae derived Omega 3) as a supplement and I'll do the test again in a couple of years.
      Good luck on your journey!

I've seen plenty of your videos so I know how much lettuce you each, my question is if I don't eat as much lettuce as you do (which honestly wont be happening any time soon, it's not my thing), will i get enough omega from normal amounts of other fruits and veg?

    I easily get enough Omega-3 from ground flax seed. My confusion surrounds DHA/EPA. I know we convert the ALA into these some, but there does seem to be some controversy about whether we should supplement with some algae or yeast based DHA and/or EPA leaving me thinking I might as well supplement a little just to be sure.

    I understand your disappointment. You put so much work into the animal cruelty videos, not to mention the PTSD you probably suffer from being exposed to watching that stuff while making the vids. I watched Part 1 but could not watch Part 2. I just couldn't do it. I can't watch a lot of that stuff and still function. At least with some of us we at least are vegan already but I know we all need to do more like you to advocate for the animals. I admire you so much for the important work you are doing and my hope is you will become huge on youtube and really be making a difference. I think these little snippets though will get the people here then they will stay for the more important stuff later.
    Love that your omega fatty acid test was so good. Your doctor that did the test must be thinking WTF. :)

      @BiteSizeVegan  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      thanks balderdashery G …and it is a bit sad, but makes sense. it's hard to watch/hear about serious things. but yes, i do put my all into those videos. oh and Part 2 is the non-graphic one with cute shit in it, so you should be okay! i made it less graphic and put random cute images and footage in in hopes more people would watch…ha! and i do hope that people get here through the fun videos and stay for the information...

      thank you Iino Douglas :) oh and that's a big question! i can't really address it fully in a comment. but it's been like coming home…i started refusing to eat meat at age 4 (don't remember that but that's what my mom says)…then the more i learned about where food comes from, the more i eliminated cruel foods. then the journey to raw vegan was much later...

    Omega 6 is really the issue on a Vegan diet, and I always seem to come in low. The RDA recommendation for Omega 6 is about 15 grams for an adult age 19-50, and I typically get about 5 grams a day, sometimes less. I have no problem getting my Omega 3's in. Any input on this? As always, love your vids! I really do love to see the day in the life/what i eat in a day vids too. :)

    • @BiteSizeVegan
      @BiteSizeVegan  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oceanginger bananas more life in a day it is! check out Dr. Greger's videos on omega 3s and 6s. He may have more insight. The ratio rather than the actual number of grams may be more important. I hope that helps.

    Yes, but is it true that the conversion rate to DHA and EPA is significantly lower for omega-3s from plants than the ones from fish?? I recently heard that and because only the DHA and EPA levels matter in the end, I'm not sure if I shouldn't spend money on supplements for these...

    • @DavidJohnson-qs9mk
      @DavidJohnson-qs9mk 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Charles Okonkwo Fish provides EPA and DHA directly, not via conversion from ALA. (The fish get it from algae.) As Dr. Greger says in another Bite Size Vegan video, one can take an algal-based EPA/DHA supplement (I'm vegan and I take a supplement). Plant sources such as flax, chia, walnuts provide ALA, some of which can be converted to EPA and then to DHA. Women seem to convert ALA better than men in general. Conversion rates seem to vary across people, for some reason or other. Dr. Greger, Dr. Furhman, and Jim Norris RD all recommend vegans take a DHA/EPA supplement to be on the safe side. EPA is an anti-inflammatory and DHA is crucial for the brain, retina, nervous system, so long term deficiency could be a big problem down the road. Furhman, in particular, remarks that in long-term vegans, DHA can be almost nonexistent in the blood serum.

      Hmmm... but I honestly am struggling with the money to buy yet another supplement in the drug store. With the vitamin d3 and b12 I'm already taking the costs including an EPA/DHA supp would amount to a total of about 40-60 per month...

    • @DavidJohnson-qs9mk
      @DavidJohnson-qs9mk 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Charles Okonkwo
      It's true vegan O3 is expensive. I take Ovega-3, which has more DHA than other brands I've checked. I usually get it for about $15 per month ($30 per bottle of 60 caps, 2 months supply). Incidentally, if you are not taking B12 in the form of cobalamin, you might want to rethink that. Dr. Greger has a video on forms of B12 and recommends cobalamin, which is dirt cheap.

    Where did you get the Omega 3 test? Just from your doctor's office? What overt fats do you eat? Looks like you eat tons of lettuce. I think it would be hard for me to get in that many greens. Have you ever had your omega 6 tested? I heard that it is harder for us raw vegans to get omega 6 then omega 3. I am trying to figure out how to get an adequate amount of both really since I rarely eat greens and I eat no overts. Probably not the smartest thing to do.

    • @fruitfullife7523
      @fruitfullife7523 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @BiteSizeVegan
      @BiteSizeVegan  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Fruitful Life i got it through my doctor but there is a website for it at omega3test.com you can order your own i think. and my Omega 6 was in that test as well. it does ALL the Omegas. and you don't want a lot of 6. the ratio is more important, you want more 3 than 6. and 6 isn't really a problem to get enough of. i don't eat any overt fats. i typically eat my lettuce for dinner but used to for lunch more. and i order cases through my grocer.

  • @BartDriessen92
    @BartDriessen92 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    I tried the program and for today I have 100% in most things; however, I still see that my omega-6 is lacking behind. I have 62% of my recommended intake with what I ate today. With some experimenting with foods I often eat I noticed that cookies are good for omega-6, but it feels a bit weird to be forced to eat loads of cookies every day for dietary reasons (though I might try it). Your lettuce is very good for omega-3, but not that good for omega-6…. Are there any other products that you know of that are good for omega-6?

      ***** omega 6 usually isn't something to worry much about- most people have to focus on reducing it! it's not so much the amount of 6 or 3 but more so the ration. you want more 3 than 6. here is a scholarly article: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12442909 and here is one from NutritionFacts.org: nutritionfacts.org/questions/what-would-you-suggest-as-an-ideal-omega-369/

    Have you read the debate started in 2010 by Christopher Cox about how vegans should eat oysters (Google "Consider the Oyster" or "vegans eating oysters")? I know a few vegans who eat a plant-based diet but occasionally eat bivalves (mussels and oysters). The argument is that eating them fits into vegan ethics - farming them is actually good for the environment, they have no a central nervous system and it's thought that they can't feel pain and have the same level of consciousness as a plant.
    Peter Singer (pretty much the grandfather of the animal rights movement) actually endorsed Cox's article, and Sentientist (a vegan blogger) made an ethical case for eating bivalves as well in a 2-part series. Would love to hear your take on it. :) I won't include links since you can't trust most of the links you see on TH-cam, but it's easy to find through Google. :)

    I'm a 4 year vegan, with that said. Total Omega 3's do not reflect optimal health. There are 3 main types of omega 3's, ALA, EPA and DHA. With the exception of Algae, all other vegan sources of omega 3 oils are ALA (Fish only contain omega 3s because they consume algae or someone down the food chain does and they eat them.)
    ALA is a fuel source, while EPA and especially DHA are more like a molecule that has a structure needed to build your brain. (FYI: Women's brains shrink during pregnancy because their DHA oils are being transfered to build their baby's brain).
    If you are doing blood work for total Omega 3's then you could get misleading results as most of your Omega 3's will be ALA.
    Dr. Greger from NutritionFacts.org, who advocates a whole food plant-based diet, recommends everyone to supplement with Omega 3's, especially if you are a vegan pregnant mommy.
    Your body does have the ability to produce DHA and EPA from ALA, but it does so very poorly, producing about 5% EPA from ALA and 0.5% DHA from ALA. So, it's better to supplement with Algal oil for optimal brain health and performance.

    • @BiteSizeVegan
      @BiteSizeVegan  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      yep Ken Burns…there is ALA, EPA, DHA, and DPA, all Omega 3s. my scores were good on all them in the breakdown. most doctors/nutirtionists will tell you that you can get ALA through plants but need fish for the EPA/DHA/DPA. i'm not against vegan supplements, of course…but you can always get this test done. it's at Omega3Test.com

    Don't mean to be rude, but you need to eat more bananas than that. Or at least more carbs. See a lot of processed food is high in calories as it is calorie dense that is part of the reason a lot of process food is bad. But if you don't get enough than you will get unwell. Personally I would rather you eat cooked foods and got enough over all than tried to go to far with a new diet. I like to say incremental change. It usually works best so long as you can be honest with yourself. Or just eat more bananas. Ha.

    1. Your test results clearly state that you have not the best omega3 to omega6 ratio.
    2. I don't know what kind of website are you using, but suggesting lettuce as a source of omega3 is ridiculous... romaine lettuce has 113mg per 100g, while cooked salmon has 2260mg per 100g with a better ratio to omega6!
    3. Fear not, there's great, vegan source of omega3... it's not fucking lettuce, it's FLAXSEED OIL! It has 116202mg of omega3 per 100g!!! That's fucking 9999999% more that lettuce and even more than fish oil!

    • @AKSmith15
      @AKSmith15 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      sanshinron I think its reverse. Omega 6 to Omega 3 Ratio.
      You = 2.60
      Control = 8.09
      As average diet is high in omega 6 rich oils, their ratio is 8.09. That is 8.06 Omega 6 to 1 Omega 3 (as in 8.09:1). The good ratio should be at least around 4:1. So if she had ratio of 2.60 that is 2.60:1.
      If you check her EPA, its 1.47 (Control = 0.59), while her DHA 4.38 (Control = 2.59). So her body is converting that ALA to DHA.
