    I’m a die hard spyderco fan (literally own 120+ of them) and I agree. The M4 freek is knife of the year 2019. Got one for Christmas and I haven’t put it down.

    Entertaining vid, I was a bit surprised with the 21 over the Inkosi! I would like to see the Manix with smooth handles and that Skinny Slicer is beautiful, Hinderer's build quality is top notch. Every knife your picked is something I have or want!. The Minpin would make my list!

    • @inthepocket7405
      @inthepocket7405  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks brother👊 Honestly, I still go back and forth with that one. Either knife could have won, and it would depend on the day probably. I don’t really understand the point of all that jimping on the manix... it’s so excessive. Yeah man... I absolutely love that slicer, and Hinderer in general. I’m so happy I was lucky enough to grab so many great knives this year, and some legendary ones at that. There’s so many big TH-cam channels saying these knives aren’t worth the money, but they must not use them, because if you use these knives, you will quickly find the value. The Minpin is another one I went back and forth with, although for me, I probably would’ve slipped the keen in there over the Minpin, only because my Minpin is relatively thick bte.

    • @kenmarapese9085
      @kenmarapese9085 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@inthepocket7405 You have definitely grabbed a lot of great knives this year. The Minpin for me is beauty, build quality and action, it's really just pocket jewelry for me, not a work knife. I'm looking forward to your Firetac reviews as they are not something I have considered although I want something in that style. Keep the vids coming!

    There is a video on blade HQ about how they dubbed it the super freek and the polo it is behind it. It was a name that benchmade didn’t want to use (probably for legal reasons) and they weren’t allowed to call it that. So he announced it as the super freek on their channel and they were known as the super freek (there is also a history on how they argued over the super freek name). Worth checking out. There is a big difference between a tool steel like M4, and d2... I love tool steel. D2 gets all its carbides from chromium alone, and it has a very critical heat treat protocol, that can be easily ruined by over heating during grinding. Two different worlds bro

    Good video K - I agree with what you said about D2. Production HT will always keep it low on the HRC scale so that the average joe can resharpen it. It's cheap to work with so it'll be around for a bit but you won't ever see its full potential in 95% of the knives in circulation out there. (LOL Cosby Sweater)

    • @inthepocket7405
      @inthepocket7405  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Carlos... It’s really a tough steel to get right, and even at a high hrc, can be horrible if the rest of the process isn’t nailed. It is cheap right now, and very easily attainable no matter where you are, but that’s also where another issue with it lies. It can be fairly inconsistent with its quality, since so many different companies make it. It can be good, it’s just not actually executed, at least by budget knives, all that often. There’s just so many better budget steels out there to choose from, that would also be much more stain resistant as well. Lol😁😁

    • @DailyCarrySolutions
      @DailyCarrySolutions 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the response Kenny, and I agree. Another issue is that production heat treat is so bad that it has actually got the general community dismissing steel that is otherwise very good when done right, like 440c and 14c28n. Nowadays everyone has it in their head that a production knife is 'better' when it's in M390, etc. etc. I'd like to see a company blow them out of the water with some good quality 'midgrade' steel done right but even then, I don't think people will catch on. Some people just don't want to face facts. PS - I dig the logo! Are you getting any decals/patches done in the future?

    People hate on Teflon because it literally degrades like a thousand times faster than bronze and in my experience it is not as smooth as any other washer/bearing system. Being done well once does not a rule make.

    • @inthepocket7405
      @inthepocket7405  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Have you actually experienced that yourself, or have you just heard that? I haven’t seen any degradation in any of the Teflon parts I’ve had in other tools and things. • @Surago
      @Surago 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      InThePocket yes. I don’t recall which knives they were but three I’ve replaced the Teflon on because they were worn in half. And are all five of those the same model knife? The hinderer you used as an example? Because that’s still just a sample set of one. He clearly does a bad thing well.

  • @barrylevitt1170

    2 years ago everyone was complaining about 8cr and wanted D2; now you are complaining about D2. I agree with the heat treat
    on some D2 needs to be refined but if my memory is correct on Pete's, Cedric and Ada channel, D2 cut rope 120 times while
    14c28n was only 75 times. 14c28n would also be a great option.

    • @inthepocket7405
      @inthepocket7405  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know that the community wanted it, but it’s probably because d2 represented good steel in the past, and it can be good if treated just right, but it’s a very critical heat treat process, and that and production doesn’t go well together. To be honest, I wasn’t active in the knife community when d2 got designated the best budget steel option. D2 has a very chunky carbide, so it does do well on rope, but who cuts rope all day? Look at all the testing on Outpost76’s testing, or SupersteelSteve. Also, how did Pete sharpen the two knives? Because he has changed methods. VG10 is great stuff too, and it gets a bad wrap. 154cm... the list goes on.

    • @barrylevitt1170
      @barrylevitt1170 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@inthepocket7405I agree with You but the bottom line is that for at least 90% of our community the knives see such little hard use or or much of any use the super steels are way overkill. I have been using D2 since the early 70's and when heat treated properly holds a good edge and this is a steel I can maintain with a strop
      or sharp maker. I enjoy sharpening but tying to sharpen the super steels is not something I have the pateince for. I purchased a spyderco UK penknife with the CTS-BD1N steel which is holding a great edge.
      Have a great day.

    • @JesseLJohnson
      @JesseLJohnson 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am fine with D2 just not crazy with the Chinese D2 and companies like Brous and Medford still using it on knives that cost hundreds of dollars. A lot of budget knives are starting to use Sandvik steel too now though as well as VG10, N690, and even 154cm. Hell even some Civivi now have s35vn. Kershaw too has been using some premium steels on some US models that to me are budget knives since most are in the $100 or less range. Used s30v for a while on some models but now the autos are cpm154 they have had quite a few models they have used m390, 20cv, CPM D2, M4 whatever else. Some of those were sprints some exclusives or some other limited run but none are that hard to get and they aren't very expensive and US made. I don't have many of them because I don't really care for assisted and so many are assisted but getting some great materials and US made for a great price. Cold Steel too some models are pretty cheap and they use s35vn now, I liked the XHP better but fine with s35vn. Can still see some older XHP models floating around though. I got a Broken Skull at Cutlery Shoppe recently that they still had in XHP at $77.
