What are the thoughts on the SOG terminus xr? I feel like it doesn’t get enough love. It’s a really great knife! You can get it for around the $50 range and kinda resembles the bug out.
Solid list, but I would like to say that I’ve been carrying a kershaw kryo 1 pretty consistently for around 3 years and I have never had any problems with the frame lock sticking. The lock has sincerely impressed me and is definitely one of the best that I’ve seen in this price range (personally). As far as it not opening completely using the spring assit, it does happen, but as long as you keep it clean you shouldn’t have any problems. I agree that is is a heavy knife, but I did get the the smaller version due to that fact and I think that pretty much solves that problem if you don’t mind a smaller knife. Anyway, just wanted to give my opinion on it for anyone looking into buying the knife.
Great list. I own some of these knives. The tenacious, rat 1 and 2, boker strike and civivi elementum. They are all great but my favorite sub $50 EDC is hands down the Kershaw skyline. Great steel, great handle and ergo's (4 finger). Rides in the pocket like it's not there and they are extremely well built and robust for their danty stature. Also the blade is amazing. The thinness and shape of the blade lend to phenomenal cutting. It isn't a heavy duty folder that typically isn't what a folding knife is used for. After carrying a skyline for years not even the elementum has dethroned it yet. Yet. I do love the little bugger.
This video sold me on the Elementum... had it 2 weeks and I liked it so much I came back to buy another of his suggestions, the list, the Rat 1... and now I'm back to buy another, the CutJack. My point is this dude really knows knives and his suggestions are a great way to build your collection
As a Civivi Praxis owner, it’s got everything you mentioned plus a little more size like you were looking for. I was a long time Kershaw carrier but felt this was a huge upgrade from anything I’ve ever owned.
The Boker Strike is my number one pick. One for me another for a gift. Great price, you can reverse the clip if you like. T8 star are the screws that are used. The main screw for the spring can be adjusted for a snappier or slower opening if you like. If you slow it down a bit, it is perfectly quiet, so if you need to pull it while on a tree stand or just need a quiet opening, you can do that. Stone washed blade is nice, Steel liner is a great addition, that yields a lot of strength to this knife. They could have left them out and just used the aluminum, but they did not. This is a great solid knife. It is not a hammer, it is not a pry bar and like any tool, if you use it for the wrong thing you can over stress it and damage it. If you use it as a solid tactical/bugout bag or EDC it will serve you for 10 years easily. I have had a number of Boker knifes like the SpeedII and the AK74 and this is by far the best of them I have owned so far. Those others I have had for years, and they have yet to fail me. I have heard some reviews that the jimping is overly done, but that is crap. I can solidly grip this knife with my thumb solidly on the jimping and it is not at all uncomfortable. Pussies. The blade out of the box is sharp, but you can easily take the edge to as sharp as a straight razor and mine is that way. Wicked Sharp. Now the blade looks like a sabre grind which I prefer over flat or others. The drop point, clip point blade gives it lots of strength. The only thing that would improve this automatic I can see are two things. High Carbon steel so you don't have to sharpen it as often, although for the price AUS-8 is not bad and as I said it will take an Edge pretty fast. 5 minutes with some carbide and ceramic and you can shave with it. The other thing, is a free 6 pack. Ok, so technically one thing. BUT, you wouldn't get it for the outstanding price if they used 1060. I got a deal on two for $79 bucks. Sign me up for that deal anytime, anywhere. I would pay $60 or a little more for this knife with no regrets, so if you want a solid Automatic that won't let you down or break the budget, stop screwing around and wondering if you should get one. Get IT!! SMKW will set you up and you will not be disappointed.
Great knife video. But I love your watch. I found Bertucci a few months ago. Since then, my son took my first A-2T that I bought from Bertucci as a "certified pre-owned" watch. I just bought a new A-2T from again direct from Bertucci. Their watches are great and customer service is tops. Thanks again.
I personally would recommend CRKT Squid XM if you can find one under 50$, I got mine from Knife Center for $47. It's sturdy, durable, easy to operate and the design for me is just timeless and sleek!
I rate the Elementum highest on the list. I carried the Rat2D2 for several months and liked it (medium hand size). However when I disassembled it for cleaning, I found the liner was already rusting under the scales! Replaced it with the Elementum (stainless liner) and love it more.
The Elementum rocks. You will have to center the blade, which is quite easy to do; otherwise, the ball bearings are silky smooth and lockup is very solid with a satisfying click. You will find yourself playing with it a lot, which will only make it smoother. My only complaint: I've dropped the knife twice and, both times, the blade popped out of frame to about 90 degrees. Probably not an issue unless you're on a scaffold with people beneath you. Quality of build is evident when you first hold it and the hollow grind cuts like a scalpel. Super gift idea for any man ... and an intriguing gift for a woman, most of whom have never owned a pocket knife but would enjoy finally getting one.
I'm blown away that I inadvertently own 5 out of 7 of these knives, and the Cold Steel is in my Blade HQ wish list...it kind of makes me feel better knowing I bought knives that have a big enough following to have made people's top 7 list...and I also don't feel so weird about how much I love my customized Tenacious...
Love my CutJack mini. I’ve beat the hell out of my knife and it’s still perfect. No blade play. Perfectly centered. Action is still great. D2 is a joy to sharpen. Just have to keep her clean because of the susceptibility to rust. Other than that it’s the perfect knife at the price point.
Got the Civivi Elementum, at first I thought that the design was too plain, but after searching for other knife and looking at it more properly. You're right, in that price range that's the best knife. My first knife btw.
This was the perfect video for me. My M16 is getting close to retirement and as good as it has been for the last 4ish years I’m one of those people who always likes to try something new.
Tenacious is my consistent work edc knife and its perfect for every task I set it to. A Cryo is ALWAYS in my back pocket, no matter what occasion or what other knives I'm carrying. My Cryo is a beater, and it shows...but for the many months I've beat on it I've Never had a misfire.😑
I own all those knives except for the Spyderco Tenacious. I agree with most of your comments and would like to add. 1. The Boker Strike has better ergos than the Kalashnikov and I prefer it. 2. The Kershaw Natrix copper -- I hate the smell of copper on my hands. 3. The Kershaw Cryo/Cryo 2 are nice. However, I prefer the Kershaw Eris which looks better and has all of the features of the Cryo. 4. Whenever possible, I prefer the D2 variant of the knife: i.e. Boker Strike, Boker Kalashnikov, Ontario RAT, etc.
Have a spring assisted kershaw that is the 30$ version so lower tier(no idea if it’s legal in my area shipped to my house so I assume it is, no ones ever gotten upset over it having a spring), but never once had a miss fire on it. You can see how I’ve wore the liner lock down severely and it still locks beautifully. If chipped the hell out of it using it to pry thing or as a screw driver. Have skinned countless squirrels and filleted countless fish, idk if the model in this video is a poorer design, but I’ve fidgeted with this thing doing things the way the spring isn’t supposed to be and still didn’t miss fire then, hell I’ve grabbed the blade and tried to fling the handle it locked out completely. Never tried the other knives on this list, but at getting a spyderco manix 2(only reason I’m replacing the kershaw is it’s very sentimental and I want it to be in ok shape) Edit- I have the kershaw clash
Your list was well done. I carry the the D2 Boker auto stryke. Because of the work I do I can carry this knife. It’s tough, Deploys quickly with a snap and I beat the heck out it. It’s a little worn but for a little over $50. It’s a very knife for hard use. The civivi elementum is an outstanding knife and I carry that on days off. I have the larger natrix and it’s a very good knife. The Tenacious is very and I do have it in my carry rotation but I believe it is a bit over priced. Stay safe and thank you for a good post. Mike
saying this as a spyderco fanboy....I'm shocked Rat2D2 was not #1 both from community and from you with the only exception possibly being Rat1. I get what you're saying about ergos. I bought an R2D2, and...my hand fits it just fine, but still, you can tell that it's just a wee bit off. The overall design was made for the R1. But...I'm blown away by Ontario's quality. I don't need ball bearings. I'm not looking for a toy. Washers are just fine AND washers are better if you need to use the knife as a weapon. All that stuff said, R2D2 is a pleasure and a great EDC. The handle is smaller for a reason. That handle is so solid, the feel is...I mean it just feels like a knife that costs 4x as much. And the D2 and blade shape make it a great beater. For my purposes, my delica is a better knife, but...it costs $84 bucks rather than in the 40s, and the FRN/skeletonized liners still feels cheap in comparison. The R2D2 makes me want to get a R1 just to keep around the house for beating it up. Also, I think you need to include the Ka-bar Dozier--it's a bit cheaper than these, but it's also a lockback.
Nice job. I carry the Cryo II. My reason is that it is very thin and very smooth and won't tear up my pant over time. I do wish they made a D2 blade version of that Cryo II. Other that that I have carried it over a year and the knife stayed solid and no issues. Flips open perfectly every time.
Civivi Elementum -- definitely the best. I have it in ebony and it's definitely a cut above -- action, qc, gentlemanly style, etc. Having used most of the knives you mention on the list, I agree wholeheartedly with you. I personally think that the OKC RAT 2 D2, if redesigned to be a budget flipper like the Elementum would be an absolute game-changing knife. Quality budget manual flipper knives are scarce.
The best knife, better than all those combined is the knife you got on you. I’ve got a knife I got from Walmart, an ozark trail model 19462. Got it for 2-3 dollars a couple of years back. I take it with me when I go fishing to guy fish, some times I use it to open boxes envelopes etc. works fine and I don’t care if it gets scratched or damaged or whatever. Best value for money ever.
I picked up a Kershaw "oso sweet" in like 2010 or something.... still on my jeans, brilliant little tool and maintains really easily. Been looking for ideas on an upgrade so thankyou for making this video.
1) Civivi Elementum - Beautiful flipper with D2 and available micarta scales makes this a no brainer. So choice! 2) Firebird by Ganzo FH71-BK - D2 and G10 ball bearing flipper for less than $30! It is a disservice to this community to not include these knives. 3) Honey Badger D2 in Small - Another knife that should be in all these lists. It is similar to the Steel Will and comes in a variety of sizes, colors, blade steels, and shapes. My favorite flipper, but I don't own an Elementum yet. 4) Steel Will Cutjack - Much better looking than the RAT II. For my money, I'd still take a Honey Badger if for nothing other than its deep carry clip. 5) Boker Strike - Such a nice auto. This is the lowest knife in the list that I actually like and would spend my money to own. 6) Spyderco Tenacious - Old standby, but the blade steel should be better for that price. It could also be better looking. Also, their clip is not deep pocket enough for me. 7) Kershaw Natrix - Not for me, but cool. Personally, I'm not a fan of frame locks. 8) Ontario RAT II - Sure the price is great, but both the blade and handle are unattractive. 9) Kershaw Cryo II - Maybe not too big, but way too heavy. So you hit the nail on the head for me on the RAT 2. Ergos get wonky when they shrank it. Love my Rat 1 though. Dig my Kalashnikov also. Something to be said about the Kalashnikov (IDK if this applies to the Strike) is the different blade styles available. Dagger and standard and there's several. For me it would be number one, I haven't had an elementum yet, out of the knives in own from your list. Until Spyderco drops a better steel on the tenacious like you mentioned.
my go-to nowadays is the Spyderco Chicago. the reason is obvious; "What's in a Name?" but to your point, assisted/flipper blades often exist in a gray area. I was even reprimanded at work once for having a Kershaw Spoke
If I may add, Ganzo FH922. Its size is between Elementum and Praxis. D2 steel, flip opening, G10 handle, super smooth action. The price is between 30 and 35 dollars.
My Cryo has been fantastic. No opening or unlocking fails. Just got the SOG Terminus XR. Love it so far. My Elementum is still on back order... Waiting is killing me. Lol. Nic vid!
Ran across this video today and watched. I totally agree with the Civivi Elementum being the best of the video. My opinion, I have and like the Civivi Little Fiend a little better than the Elementum. Now, my favorite knife in this price range and my go to knife pretty much every day, although t's not under $50, for just $5 more, the SOG Terminous XR is a excellent knife. That XR lock is very nice, fun, and very fidgety. I have crimson red g10 scales with stonewashed d2 blade very nice.
You can opt for the Esee Avispa or Zancudo, instead of the Rat. Same geometry of blade but its a frame lock not a liner lock. Fits slimmer in the pocket
I've got the Boker and its a great quality knife, also it came with life warranty which I didn't expect at this price point. It feels super sturdy and the spring is very strong. I hope it will last me many years
I stumbled across a folding (flipper) knife with the thumb hole from, LOTHAR a Germany owned company but manufactured in China. The blade is D2 steel, HCR 62, Pocket clip with lanyard, a polishing cloth, handsome carrying case and it actually has the double ended hex tool for both screw sizes! I almost forgot it has black stone washed micarta scales; it's a fairly large knife and a little heavy but not overbearing, liner lock, zero blade play, very nice and very solid. The only hang up is due to the high carbon steel for durability, it is not corrosion resistant and should be kept dry and slightly oiled if being stored. It is a cool blade style with awesome ergonomics, almost a tanto blade with 3.5" blade, (roughly), very good quality and very sharp to look at. Not bad for $40 on Amazon. I'm really impressed, except, it's almost too nice to use for EDC and I sure don't want to scratch it but knives are made for one thing. It very easily could be used in a self-defense situation but it probably isn't good for EDC because if you whip it out at Walmart or some place just to open a sealed package or something it will raise some eyebrows. 😂 Anyhow, thank you for the EDC knife review it was very helpful. I would probably go with the Sencut Arcblast and or the Civivi Elementum Sheep's foot. 😎👍
I’ve been carrying the CRKT Ignitor for more than a decade. It’s my second one (first one was surrendered to TSA because I forgot to check it in my luggage). I’m a collector, and have LOTS of knives., and I play in the woods often. My second favorite is my Spiderco Endura in ZPD-189.
I had the Kershaw cryo. Great blade. I used to have a bunch of knives under $100. Some under $50. Then I decided with all the flippers I had instead of having 10 budget I’d rather 5 higher quality and better steel. My main edc’s 25 years ago were gerber gator and freeman folders. Then switched to Kershaw for many years and many different models. When I finally made the leap to Benchmade I decided to sell off all my budget knives and opt for one high quality vs 3 or 4 budget. Not saying there is anything is wrong with budget edc blades but for me, buy once cry once. I will still buy a budget occasionally for a beater knife that I don’t care about babying but for me and it is just personal preference of course, I’d just rather buy once cry once and have higher quality.
Also the buck 780.ive carried it a lot. It has the ripoff spidey hole which I love. It has a great blade shape for cutting edge and grippy rubber scales. I think it's aus8 but wouldn't swear to it. Didn't think to Google that before starting text. Thanks
Which one you will prefer? Flipper(always fast opening) or thumb hole(flick for fast or thumb opening for slow) For the blade steel, I guess D2 maybe harder to sharpen, I could be wrong.
Got a Boker Strike based on the recommendation here and I received a knife that was absurdly dull... Went to Boker to complain only to find out they wanted me to pay them $15 to return it. SMH
Just ordered the boker because of the one I saw in this video an if it wasn’t for the color scheme I probably wouldn’t have really payed any attention to it … I got the 2.6” /d2 blade for an edc an I can’t wait for it to get here ! Great video bub!
The Elementum would be the winner for me as well. Fantastic Knife. I rounded the edge by the choil so it doesn't bite me. The only knife I own that gets more pocket time is the Spydie-Smock, but I had to customize it a bit to get it right (rounded it's choil edge as well, switched in deep-carry clip, removed the 2nd detent ball, sanded all of the sharpish edged).
Cold steel prolite tanto with the snaggletooth pocket catch mod. I use it almost all day everyday at work and it is, in my opinion, the best edc folding knife for me. As an update, I feel like people are sleeping on the German 4116 steel. I have witnessed that it is almost completely corrosion resistant (even in saltwater conditions for long extended periods of time, check nutnfancy’s video), it holds an edge on par with 8cr13mov and Aus8, and after having it collide with concrete as well as cut through very dirty and gritty cardboard consistently without taking much damage it is apparently a tough steel as well. I am very pleased and impressed with this knife for less than $30. The snaggletooth pocket catch mod cost me $15 usd. Far better than the kershaw Emerson knives and you get the triad lock.
I totally agree with you regarding assisted opening knives. Most knife people can flick knives open just as fast and close them even faster because there’s no spring. Also, companies limit their sales as they are definitely illegal in many states, mine included.
I prefer bigger knives. Despite having over 250 value knives, the only one I own on your list is the Tenacious. Here's my EDC list. No particular order. Civivi Praxis, desert Kershaw Link, blue Spyderco Tenacious AKC Extreme Ace, blue Bestech Scimitar Steel Will Intrigue, blue Brous Blade, Import line T-4, blackwashed

I found it interesting the guy in the video was bashing the ergonomics on the Rat 2. I too have what you would call beefy hands and had no such issues. One of the best knives I have ever purchased at any price.
Okay, I'd say in this order. 1) Steel Will Cutjack - I loved this knife when I reviewed it. It's an excellent cheap EDC in every way. light, good flipper, good clip, great ergos, good steel, tough, simple, easy to work on. 2) Ontario RAT - all the things great about the cutjack but no flipper 3) Civivi Elementum - everyone needs a fancy knife. 4) Spyderco Tenacious - used to be the best. now it's just OK. Don't like the steel or ergos, do like the blade grind and lock and thumb hole. 5) Kershaw Natrix - a copper knife? No. 6) Boker auto - EDCing something that can get you arrested? No. 7) Kershaw Cryo II - an assisted opener? No.
Great list skip the cryo too heavy. Go with the Kershaw dividend or chive. Dividend with better steel for the win! Although the price goes over the 50 a bit.
Assisted opening also adds more parts to break, the torsion bars are corrosion crack and stress prone, I’ve replaced the torsion bar on my kershaw shallot 3 times, I now actively avoid assisted opening.
You can't beat the value and quality of the RAT-2 in d2. The Cutjack mini in d2 is great too. If you can get d2 at this price point, you've got a great knife. The Civivi Hooligan (d2) belonged on the list.
The Cryo is amazing. I've own the Tenacious and Rats, my Cryo was still way better than either. The weight is nothing, not sure why he's complaining about it. And the steel frame lock is sturdy, not even hard to unlock.. Unless you got baby fingers.
IrishBiteGirl same here, everyone that reviews the Cryo 2 complains about the weight. I’ve carried a number of knives light and heavy ones and when your wearing pants or have a belt on you never notice the weight. It’s understandable if you wear athletic gear but you can use the clip to carry it in the waist band. The Cryo 2 is just an amazing knife good quality for a reasonable pice.
The Rat I and Rat II are my favourites, especially now Flytanium make scales for them. I know that takes them out of the budget range, but I think the D2 versions are worth more than they cost anyway. I agree about the Rat I being easier to use though, and I have small (female) hands.
Just found this. I am waiting patiently (absolute lie!) on an Elementum, dark green micarta now. So glad to see I made a good decision. I have truely been enjoying my all-stainless CRKT Pilar ($29) for EDC, and picked up a Kershaw Spline, which I do not love the look of, purely because of the HQ discontinued price drop to $19. It has sat on my desk for fidget flipping. The constant, needed honing on my Pilar, due to that cheap steel is annoying, no matter how much I love the knife, so looking forward to my first D2. Thanks for this vid!
Unfortunately, BladeHQ sold out of the D2 Civivi Elementum shortly after Black Friday. They still have the Damask Elementum in stock. I did manage to find a grey scale D2 at BladesEdge in Boca Raton, FL. It is waiting in my PO box for me to pick up. The BladeHQ email notification notice request did work; but I didn't pull the trigger fast enough. The Civivi Elementum is ever so slightly under 3" in blade length, and is very presentable with a deep pocket carry clip. This makes it a nearly ideal EDC for office work in cities like San Francisco and Los Angeles which have particular restrictions. I would personally prefer a larger knife; but I live in the Bay Area, so I chose to go under 3".
I feel you completely on the RAT 1 vs 2. I love my RAT 1 and have it in rotation with some heavy hitters like my benchmade 940, Buck 110 slim pro and a cheap oddball SOG Fielder.
I picked up the Elementum after watching a couple of different reviews on TH-cam. It's my first real 'quality' knife and I do like everything about it except I wish the handle had a little more texture to it so it would be easier to grip. I just it's rather slick to my touch. I've only had it a few hours but I'm already planning to address the slick handle tomorrow with the addition of some sandpaper to it. Unless I can rough it up with a Dremel tool or something. Probably sounds criminal to do that to a knife but it's got to feel good in the hand. Thanks for the great videos.
Great review Taylor! I got the copper natrix a couple of weeks ago and have loved it. Goes great in my boulder wallet as part of my copper carry. Also finally got my hands on an elementum from blade hq 2 weeks ago...everyone needs one of these.

I only own a copper Natrix so my opinion doesn’t really count but I have to root for it ... it is a manageable size, D2 blade and copper scales ... Great Video!
I’ve been daily carrying my cyro for about a year and a halfish and god I love it. Bought it 100% because I liked the looks and I love kershaws because they’re cheap and true and I fell in love with it
I’ve had the Boker Strike for years now it’s tough has a thick strong blade only problem is the color is coming off the grips but I carry it every day.
With the caveat that I don't own and haven't used any of these knives, here's how I would rate them. I'm rating in terms of what I would think about if trying to make a decision on whether to buy or not. 1. Civivi Elementum - good steel and a simple yet elegant shape; caveat that I don't like G-10 and so this knife is not sub-$50 when purchased with one of the wood handle options - WOULD BUY 2. Kershaw Natrix - good steel and the copper handles are fantastic; I'm not quite sure how I feel about the blade shape - WOULD BUY 3. Steel Will Cutjack - good steel and I really like the shape of this knife; but I do not like G-10 and I think the pattern in the handle scales is REALLY ugly - WOULD NOT BUY (but if they change the handle I would reconsider) 4. Ontario Rat II - good steel; another nope on the G-10 and there's something unattractive about the overall shape - WOULD NOT BUY 5. Kershaw Cryo II - I really prefer metal handles over just about anything; but the steel is meh and that takes this one out of the running for me - WOULD NOT BUY 6. Boker Strike - I'd like this shape better in a fixed blade knife; meh steel and G-10 - WOULD NOT BUY 7. Spyderco Tenacious - meh steel, nope on the G-10, and I don't really like the look of Spyderco knives - WOULD NOT BUY (*** Since you said you wanted a bigger Elementum when do we get to see your review of the Civivi Incite? ***)
I do love my CIVIVI Badlands Vagabond. The Boker Strike is a fav also.. The pocket EDC knife I carry the most is my Kizer Begleiter in OD Green. All my knives are in OD Green besides the Boker Strike.. Great list!!
My carry is a skif sturdy it's a rather bulky knife, frame lock very strong knife and I chose it for the blade size being larger but I love skif knives cheaper steel but the sturdy is like $30 I think and I love it! All they're folders are very reasonable and hold a great edge
I have 3 cryos. One was smooth and buttery out of the box, the other two took a heck of a lot of breaking in, but once they were, they perform amazingly, with 0 of the issues mentioned beside the weight (which I like anyhow)
Question for you: for someone just getting into collecting knives for EDC and general use/display, what steps do you suggest taking immediately after purchasing a knife to maximize its life span? i.e. tighten everything down, re-edge the blade, breaking the knife down and cleaning it before use, etc.
Lube, since most use torque a torx set and a Sharpening kit. I suggest also Buy 3 starter knives price doesn't have to be over $100 each. This will cut down on overall wear and tear of your knives. So for me the CIVIVI Elementum, CRKT Caligo, and Kershaw Skyline work perfect for starters.
@@jacobbcox1985 Most knives use torx screws. Then you will need a set of torx screwdriver bits and a driver. Most common sizes are T6 T8 T10 but other sizes sometimes are used as well as types of screws like spanners, flathead and Philips. If you get a good bit set (I say good because cheap sets usually have bits that aren't hardened enough and the T6 can strip out easily), like the Wiha complete driver and bits set, and you should have every bit you'll need unless the knife maker use some proprietary system. A torque wrench is something that measures the amount of torque you are tightening a bolt or other fastener to.
@@highdesertbiker Worksharp Precision sharpener system. The price and quality is very good from what I've seen and going into EDC I would spend what is needed and not much more. If you want quick and simple then go with the Worksharp Knife and Tool Ken Onion Edition.
I don’t have a Rat 2 but I really like my rat 1. The only problem with the Rat 1 is that it is a little heavy. I don’t like a heavy knife in my pocket. If you don’t need a 1 handed opening edc a Mercator K55K is the way to go. This is the only full size folder that you’ll absolutely forget is even in your pocket. It is a cool historically dated design that is much thinner than a bench made bugout. German quality for 35 dollars and everyone will want to handle it.
I have four of the knives. I carry my strike (d2 steel) more than any. I love my tenacious but wish they would at least have a D2 steel option. Spyderco could easily produce them at the same price point and would sell tons. Look forward to your posts!
I agree with the Civivi Elementum is a Great EDC but a little short for a big hand. So, I took the Civivi Shredder beautiful blade and the 2 best things about Civivi is the detent and they leave the blade without a billboard on the side. i.e. the action is pretty sweet as well!
There are a lot to choose from but owning a rat and it actually being less than 40. It doesn't hold an edge the longest of knives I have but overall I love it. The SOG trident would be my favorite of all time though. It stays sharp longer and is light depends on where you buy it. It can be anywhere between 40 and $80
As a fellow ham handed guy, I agree with your analysis of the R2D2. It's a great little beater, but in hard cutting it is just uncomfortable. The Tenacious is way more comfy and I'd carry one if I didn't already have the Para 3. Spydercos aren't pretty, but the Para, PM, and Tenacious are so damned comfy for any cutting task. Might have to pick up a Cutjack as I haven't tried them yet.
The Ontario Rat 1 D2 is silky smooth and costs about 40$ on Amazon. Highly highly recommend this knife and it fits in my XL edc belt organizer almost perfectly.
The Elementum is good but I think it's a little small. If you prefer a good full sized knife consider the Bestech Swordfish. Slim, nice action, good clip, 4 inch pointy blade.
Yea tenacious for sure bro! Ive owned 4 of them. No surration, ever. Rat 1 is also one of my favorite hard use knives, the rat 2 didnt get me though. I bought my dad a cryo 2 for his birthday a while back. Not a fan of the assisted opening and the weight. But he lost it within a week. Lol hes not a knife guy.

I like the Kershaw Cryo design but agree it is a little on the heavy side. I upgraded to the Benchmade Bugout which is now my go-to EDC but it's over $50.
Fun video, definitely worth the wait even though the outcome wasn't much of a surprise. Another great budget knife to check out is the SOG Terminus XR with G10 scales. It's technically a little above $50, but I snagged one on black Friday for under $45. The XR locking system is great; I would say even better than the axis lock it's based on. It has great flipping action and D2 steel. I'd highly recommend it.

What are the thoughts on the SOG terminus xr? I feel like it doesn’t get enough love. It’s a really great knife! You can get it for around the $50 range and kinda resembles the bug out.
Solid list, but I would like to say that I’ve been carrying a kershaw kryo 1 pretty consistently for around 3 years and I have never had any problems with the frame lock sticking. The lock has sincerely impressed me and is definitely one of the best that I’ve seen in this price range (personally). As far as it not opening completely using the spring assit, it does happen, but as long as you keep it clean you shouldn’t have any problems. I agree that is is a heavy knife, but I did get the the smaller version due to that fact and I think that pretty much solves that problem if you don’t mind a smaller knife. Anyway, just wanted to give my opinion on it for anyone looking into buying the knife.

Great list. I own some of these knives. The tenacious, rat 1 and 2, boker strike and civivi elementum. They are all great but my favorite sub $50 EDC is hands down the Kershaw skyline. Great steel, great handle and ergo's (4 finger). Rides in the pocket like it's not there and they are extremely well built and robust for their danty stature. Also the blade is amazing. The thinness and shape of the blade lend to phenomenal cutting. It isn't a heavy duty folder that typically isn't what a folding knife is used for. After carrying a skyline for years not even the elementum has dethroned it yet. Yet. I do love the little bugger.

The Boker Strike is my number one pick. One for me another for a gift. Great price, you can reverse the clip if you like. T8 star are the screws that are used. The main screw for the spring can be adjusted for a snappier or slower opening if you like. If you slow it down a bit, it is perfectly quiet, so if you need to pull it while on a tree stand or just need a quiet opening, you can do that. Stone washed blade is nice, Steel liner is a great addition, that yields a lot of strength to this knife. They could have left them out and just used the aluminum, but they did not. This is a great solid knife. It is not a hammer, it is not a pry bar and like any tool, if you use it for the wrong thing you can over stress it and damage it. If you use it as a solid tactical/bugout bag or EDC it will serve you for 10 years easily. I have had a number of Boker knifes like the SpeedII and the AK74 and this is by far the best of them I have owned so far. Those others I have had for years, and they have yet to fail me. I have heard some reviews that the jimping is overly done, but that is crap. I can solidly grip this knife with my thumb solidly on the jimping and it is not at all uncomfortable. Pussies. The blade out of the box is sharp, but you can easily take the edge to as sharp as a straight razor and mine is that way. Wicked Sharp. Now the blade looks like a sabre grind which I prefer over flat or others. The drop point, clip point blade gives it lots of strength. The only thing that would improve this automatic I can see are two things. High Carbon steel so you don't have to sharpen it as often, although for the price AUS-8 is not bad and as I said it will take an Edge pretty fast. 5 minutes with some carbide and ceramic and you can shave with it. The other thing, is a free 6 pack. Ok, so technically one thing. BUT, you wouldn't get it for the outstanding price if they used 1060. I got a deal on two for $79 bucks. Sign me up for that deal anytime, anywhere. I would pay $60 or a little more for this knife with no regrets, so if you want a solid Automatic that won't let you down or break the budget, stop screwing around and wondering if you should get one. Get IT!! SMKW will set you up and you will not be disappointed.
Great knife video. But I love your watch. I found Bertucci a few months ago. Since then, my son took my first A-2T that I bought from Bertucci as a "certified pre-owned" watch. I just bought a new A-2T from again direct from Bertucci. Their watches are great and customer service is tops. Thanks again.
I personally would recommend CRKT Squid XM if you can find one under 50$, I got mine from Knife Center for $47. It's sturdy, durable, easy to operate and the design for me is just timeless and sleek!
I rate the Elementum highest on the list. I carried the Rat2D2 for several months and liked it (medium hand size). However when I disassembled it for cleaning, I found the liner was already rusting under the scales! Replaced it with the Elementum (stainless liner) and love it more.
Elementum is the best one on that list imo, we did a review againts the civivi durrus and it definitely has taken up some of other knives pocket time

The Elementum rocks. You will have to center the blade, which is quite easy to do; otherwise, the ball bearings are silky smooth and lockup is very solid with a satisfying click. You will find yourself playing with it a lot, which will only make it smoother. My only complaint: I've dropped the knife twice and, both times, the blade popped out of frame to about 90 degrees. Probably not an issue unless you're on a scaffold with people beneath you. Quality of build is evident when you first hold it and the hollow grind cuts like a scalpel. Super gift idea for any man ... and an intriguing gift for a woman, most of whom have never owned a pocket knife but would enjoy finally getting one.
I have been carrying a Kershaw blur for 15 years. I absolutely love them and trust them. I don’t know why it is never mentioned in knife reviews.
Some are biased against assisted opening knives. I like the Speed-Safe system on the Blur. Sometimes the assisted opening comes in handy.
Blur is an outstanding knife! A lot of dudes who carry it have no need or desire for any other knife.
I'm blown away that I inadvertently own 5 out of 7 of these knives, and the Cold Steel is in my Blade HQ wish list...it kind of makes me feel better knowing I bought knives that have a big enough following to have made people's top 7 list...and I also don't feel so weird about how much I love my customized Tenacious...

I’ve beat the hell out of my knife and it’s still perfect. No blade play. Perfectly centered. Action is still great. D2 is a joy to sharpen. Just have to keep her clean because of the susceptibility to rust.
Other than that it’s the perfect knife at the price point.
Got the Civivi Elementum, at first I thought that the design was too plain, but after searching for other knife and looking at it more properly. You're right, in that price range that's the best knife. My first knife btw.

Tenacious is my consistent work edc knife and its perfect for every task I set it to. A Cryo is ALWAYS in my back pocket, no matter what occasion or what other knives I'm carrying. My Cryo is a beater, and it shows...but for the many months I've beat on it I've Never had a misfire.😑
Just bought my second RAT 2, brown, coated blade. Really like it for EDC.
I own all those knives except for the Spyderco Tenacious. I agree with most of your comments and would like to add.
1. The Boker Strike has better ergos than the Kalashnikov and I prefer it.
2. The Kershaw Natrix copper -- I hate the smell of copper on my hands.
3. The Kershaw Cryo/Cryo 2 are nice. However, I prefer the Kershaw Eris which looks better and has all of the features of the Cryo.
4. Whenever possible, I prefer the D2 variant of the knife: i.e. Boker Strike, Boker Kalashnikov, Ontario RAT, etc.
I've not used the Elementum, but my two favorites are the CIVIVI Praxis and the Steel Will Cutjack.

Have a spring assisted kershaw that is the 30$ version so lower tier(no idea if it’s legal in my area shipped to my house so I assume it is, no ones ever gotten upset over it having a spring), but never once had a miss fire on it. You can see how I’ve wore the liner lock down severely and it still locks beautifully. If chipped the hell out of it using it to pry thing or as a screw driver. Have skinned countless squirrels and filleted countless fish, idk if the model in this video is a poorer design, but I’ve fidgeted with this thing doing things the way the spring isn’t supposed to be and still didn’t miss fire then, hell I’ve grabbed the blade and tried to fling the handle it locked out completely. Never tried the other knives on this list, but at getting a spyderco manix 2(only reason I’m replacing the kershaw is it’s very sentimental and I want it to be in ok shape)

Your list was well done. I carry the the D2 Boker auto stryke. Because of the work I do I can carry this knife. It’s tough, Deploys quickly with a snap and I beat the heck out it. It’s a little worn but for a little over $50. It’s a very knife for hard use. The civivi elementum is an outstanding knife and I carry that on days off. I have the larger natrix and it’s a very good knife. The Tenacious is very and I do have it in my carry rotation but I believe it is a bit over priced. Stay safe and thank you for a good post.

saying this as a spyderco fanboy....I'm shocked Rat2D2 was not #1 both from community and from you with the only exception possibly being Rat1. I get what you're saying about ergos. I bought an R2D2, and...my hand fits it just fine, but still, you can tell that it's just a wee bit off. The overall design was made for the R1. But...I'm blown away by Ontario's quality. I don't need ball bearings. I'm not looking for a toy. Washers are just fine AND washers are better if you need to use the knife as a weapon. All that stuff said, R2D2 is a pleasure and a great EDC. The handle is smaller for a reason. That handle is so solid, the feel is...I mean it just feels like a knife that costs 4x as much. And the D2 and blade shape make it a great beater. For my purposes, my delica is a better knife, but...it costs $84 bucks rather than in the 40s, and the FRN/skeletonized liners still feels cheap in comparison. The R2D2 makes me want to get a R1 just to keep around the house for beating it up. Also, I think you need to include the Ka-bar Dozier--it's a bit cheaper than these, but it's also a lockback.
Nice job. I carry the Cryo II. My reason is that it is very thin and very smooth and won't tear up my pant over time. I do wish they made a D2 blade version of that Cryo II. Other that that I have carried it over a year and the knife stayed solid and no issues. Flips open perfectly every time.
Civivi Elementum -- definitely the best. I have it in ebony and it's definitely a cut above -- action, qc, gentlemanly style, etc. Having used most of the knives you mention on the list, I agree wholeheartedly with you. I personally think that the OKC RAT 2 D2, if redesigned to be a budget flipper like the Elementum would be an absolute game-changing knife. Quality budget manual flipper knives are scarce.
I would REALLY prefer the Civivi with a coated, satin, or...whatever less reflective blade. Great presentation, ty.

The best knife, better than all those combined is the knife you got on you. I’ve got a knife I got from Walmart, an ozark trail model 19462. Got it for 2-3 dollars a couple of years back. I take it with me when I go fishing to guy fish, some times I use it to open boxes envelopes etc. works fine and I don’t care if it gets scratched or damaged or whatever. Best value for money ever.

I picked up a Kershaw "oso sweet" in like 2010 or something.... still on my jeans, brilliant little tool and maintains really easily. Been looking for ideas on an upgrade so thankyou for making this video.
1) Civivi Elementum - Beautiful flipper with D2 and available micarta scales makes this a no brainer. So choice!
2) Firebird by Ganzo FH71-BK - D2 and G10 ball bearing flipper for less than $30! It is a disservice to this community to not include these knives.
3) Honey Badger D2 in Small - Another knife that should be in all these lists. It is similar to the Steel Will and comes in a variety of sizes, colors, blade steels, and shapes. My favorite flipper, but I don't own an Elementum yet.
4) Steel Will Cutjack - Much better looking than the RAT II. For my money, I'd still take a Honey Badger if for nothing other than its deep carry clip.
5) Boker Strike - Such a nice auto. This is the lowest knife in the list that I actually like and would spend my money to own.
6) Spyderco Tenacious - Old standby, but the blade steel should be better for that price. It could also be better looking. Also, their clip is not deep pocket enough for me.
7) Kershaw Natrix - Not for me, but cool. Personally, I'm not a fan of frame locks.
8) Ontario RAT II - Sure the price is great, but both the blade and handle are unattractive.
9) Kershaw Cryo II - Maybe not too big, but way too heavy.

So you hit the nail on the head for me on the RAT 2. Ergos get wonky when they shrank it. Love my Rat 1 though. Dig my Kalashnikov also. Something to be said about the Kalashnikov (IDK if this applies to the Strike) is the different blade styles available. Dagger and standard and there's several. For me it would be number one, I haven't had an elementum yet, out of the knives in own from your list. Until Spyderco drops a better steel on the tenacious like you mentioned.
my go-to nowadays is the Spyderco Chicago. the reason is obvious; "What's in a Name?"
but to your point, assisted/flipper blades often exist in a gray area. I was even reprimanded at work once for having a Kershaw Spoke
If I may add, Ganzo FH922. Its size is between Elementum and Praxis. D2 steel, flip opening, G10 handle, super smooth action. The price is between 30 and 35 dollars.
My Cryo has been fantastic. No opening or unlocking fails. Just got the SOG Terminus XR. Love it so far. My Elementum is still on back order... Waiting is killing me. Lol. Nic vid!

I totally agree with the Civivi Elementum being the best of the video. My opinion, I have and like the Civivi Little Fiend a little better than the Elementum. Now, my favorite knife in this price range and my go to knife pretty much every day, although t's not under $50, for just $5 more, the SOG Terminous XR is a excellent knife. That XR lock is very nice, fun, and very fidgety. I have crimson red g10 scales with stonewashed d2 blade very nice.
You can opt for the Esee Avispa or Zancudo, instead of the Rat. Same geometry of blade but its a frame lock not a liner lock. Fits slimmer in the pocket

I've got the Boker and its a great quality knife, also it came with life warranty which I didn't expect at this price point. It feels super sturdy and the spring is very strong. I hope it will last me many years
I stumbled across a folding (flipper) knife with the thumb hole from, LOTHAR a Germany owned company but manufactured in China. The blade is D2 steel, HCR 62, Pocket clip with lanyard, a polishing cloth, handsome carrying case and it actually has the double ended hex tool for both screw sizes! I almost forgot it has black stone washed micarta scales; it's a fairly large knife and a little heavy but not overbearing, liner lock, zero blade play, very nice and very solid. The only hang up is due to the high carbon steel for durability, it is not corrosion resistant and should be kept dry and slightly oiled if being stored. It is a cool blade style with awesome ergonomics, almost a tanto blade with 3.5" blade, (roughly), very good quality and very sharp to look at. Not bad for $40 on Amazon. I'm really impressed, except, it's almost too nice to use for EDC and I sure don't want to scratch it but knives are made for one thing. It very easily could be used in a self-defense situation but it probably isn't good for EDC because if you whip it out at Walmart or some place just to open a sealed package or something it will raise some eyebrows. 😂 Anyhow, thank you for the EDC knife review it was very helpful. I would probably go with the Sencut Arcblast and or the Civivi Elementum Sheep's foot. 😎👍
I’ve been carrying the CRKT Ignitor for more than a decade. It’s my second one (first one was surrendered to TSA because I forgot to check it in my luggage). I’m a collector, and have LOTS of knives., and I play in the woods often. My second favorite is my Spiderco Endura in ZPD-189.
I had the Kershaw cryo. Great blade. I used to have a bunch of knives under $100. Some under $50. Then I decided with all the flippers I had instead of having 10 budget I’d rather 5 higher quality and better steel.
My main edc’s 25 years ago were gerber gator and freeman folders. Then switched to Kershaw for many years and many different models. When I finally made the leap to Benchmade I decided to sell off all my budget knives and opt for one high quality vs 3 or 4 budget. Not saying there is anything is wrong with budget edc blades but for me, buy once cry once. I will still buy a budget occasionally for a beater knife that I don’t care about babying but for me and it is just personal preference of course, I’d just rather buy once cry once and have higher quality.
The OKC Rat1 is an absolutely excellent EDC, I have beat mine up for a year now . And it has been unbelievably tough...
I've has the cryo 2 for a long time and it's still one of my favorite ones. It's a bit heavy but not bad at all, it can get super sharp too.

Which one you will prefer? Flipper(always fast opening) or thumb hole(flick for fast or thumb opening for slow)

Got a Boker Strike based on the recommendation here and I received a knife that was absurdly dull... Went to Boker to complain only to find out they wanted me to pay them $15 to return it. SMH
Just ordered the boker because of the one I saw in this video an if it wasn’t for the color scheme I probably wouldn’t have really payed any attention to it … I got the 2.6” /d2 blade for an edc an I can’t wait for it to get here ! Great video bub!
The Elementum would be the winner for me as well. Fantastic Knife. I rounded the edge by the choil so it doesn't bite me. The only knife I own that gets more pocket time is the Spydie-Smock, but I had to customize it a bit to get it right (rounded it's choil edge as well, switched in deep-carry clip, removed the 2nd detent ball, sanded all of the sharpish edged).
Cold steel prolite tanto with the snaggletooth pocket catch mod. I use it almost all day everyday at work and it is, in my opinion, the best edc folding knife for me. As an update, I feel like people are sleeping on the German 4116 steel. I have witnessed that it is almost completely corrosion resistant (even in saltwater conditions for long extended periods of time, check nutnfancy’s video), it holds an edge on par with 8cr13mov and Aus8, and after having it collide with concrete as well as cut through very dirty and gritty cardboard consistently without taking much damage it is apparently a tough steel as well. I am very pleased and impressed with this knife for less than $30. The snaggletooth pocket catch mod cost me $15 usd. Far better than the kershaw Emerson knives and you get the triad lock.
I totally agree with you regarding assisted opening knives. Most knife people can flick knives open just as fast and close them even faster because there’s no spring. Also, companies limit their sales as they are definitely illegal in many states, mine included.
I prefer bigger knives. Despite having over 250 value knives, the only one I own on your list is the Tenacious. Here's my EDC list. No particular order.

I found it interesting the guy in the video was bashing the ergonomics on the Rat 2. I too have what you would call beefy hands and had no such issues. One of the best knives I have ever purchased at any price.

Okay, I'd say in this order.
1) Steel Will Cutjack - I loved this knife when I reviewed it. It's an excellent cheap EDC in every way. light, good flipper, good clip, great ergos, good steel, tough, simple, easy to work on.
2) Ontario RAT - all the things great about the cutjack but no flipper
3) Civivi Elementum - everyone needs a fancy knife.
4) Spyderco Tenacious - used to be the best. now it's just OK. Don't like the steel or ergos, do like the blade grind and lock and thumb hole.
5) Kershaw Natrix - a copper knife? No.
6) Boker auto - EDCing something that can get you arrested? No.
7) Kershaw Cryo II - an assisted opener? No.
Great list skip the cryo too heavy. Go with the Kershaw dividend or chive. Dividend with better steel for the win! Although the price goes over the 50 a bit.
Assisted opening also adds more parts to break, the torsion bars are corrosion crack and stress prone, I’ve replaced the torsion bar on my kershaw shallot 3 times, I now actively avoid assisted opening.
You can't beat the value and quality of the RAT-2 in d2. The Cutjack mini in d2 is great too. If you can get d2 at this price point, you've got a great knife. The Civivi Hooligan (d2) belonged on the list.
The Cryo 2 was my first “good” knife. Definitely took me to USA made Kershaws and then into ZT!
The Cryo is amazing. I've own the Tenacious and Rats, my Cryo was still way better than either.
The weight is nothing, not sure why he's complaining about it. And the steel frame lock is sturdy, not even hard to unlock..

IrishBiteGirl same here, everyone that reviews the Cryo 2 complains about the weight. I’ve carried a number of knives light and heavy ones and when your wearing pants or have a belt on you never notice the weight. It’s understandable if you wear athletic gear but you can use the clip to carry it in the waist band. The Cryo 2 is just an amazing knife good quality for a reasonable pice.
The Rat I and Rat II are my favourites, especially now Flytanium make scales for them. I know that takes them out of the budget range, but I think the D2 versions are worth more than they cost anyway. I agree about the Rat I being easier to use though, and I have small (female) hands.
Just found this. I am waiting patiently (absolute lie!) on an Elementum, dark green micarta now. So glad to see I made a good decision. I have truely been enjoying my all-stainless CRKT Pilar ($29) for EDC, and picked up a Kershaw Spline, which I do not love the look of, purely because of the HQ discontinued price drop to $19. It has sat on my desk for fidget flipping. The constant, needed honing on my Pilar, due to that cheap steel is annoying, no matter how much I love the knife, so looking forward to my first D2. Unfortunately, BladeHQ sold out of the D2 Civivi Elementum shortly after Black Friday. They still have the Damask Elementum in stock. I did manage to find a grey scale D2 at BladesEdge in Boca Raton, FL. It is waiting in my PO box for me to pick up.
The BladeHQ email notification notice request did work; but I didn't pull the trigger fast enough.
The Civivi Elementum is ever so slightly under 3" in blade length, and is very presentable with a deep pocket carry clip. This makes it a nearly ideal EDC for office work in cities like San Francisco and Los Angeles which have particular restrictions. I would personally prefer a larger knife; but I live in the Bay Area, so I chose to go under 3".
The Civivi Elementum is my favorite - light, deep carry clip, cheap and a flipper
I feel you completely on the RAT 1 vs 2. I love my RAT 1 and have it in rotation with some heavy hitters like my benchmade 940, Buck 110 slim pro and a cheap oddball SOG Fielder.
I picked up the Elementum after watching a couple of different reviews on TH-cam. It's my first real 'quality' knife and I do like everything about it except I wish the handle had a little more texture to it so it would be easier to grip. I just it's rather slick to my touch. I've only had it a few hours but I'm already planning to address the slick handle tomorrow with the addition of some sandpaper to it. Unless I can rough it up with a Dremel tool or something. Probably sounds criminal to do that to a knife but it's got to feel good in the hand. Thanks for the great videos.
Great review Taylor! I got the copper natrix a couple of weeks ago and have loved it. Goes great in my boulder wallet as part of my copper carry. Also finally got my hands on an elementum from blade hq 2 weeks ago...everyone needs one of these.

i actually hate spyderco and wanted to put it last on my list but that cryo 2 like you said is heavy and just felt like it was thrown together without too much thought!!!! the spyderco is only slightly better then that and also has more aftermarket support!!!
I only own a copper Natrix so my opinion doesn’t really count but I have to root for it ... it is a manageable size, D2 blade and copper scales ... Great Video!
I’ve been daily carrying my cyro for about a year and a halfish and god I love it. Bought it 100% because I liked the looks and I love kershaws because they’re cheap and true and I fell in love with it
Agreed. my Cryo is in my pocket more often than any of my others.
I’ve had the Boker Strike for years now it’s tough has a thick strong blade only problem is the color is coming off the grips but I carry it every day.
With the caveat that I don't own and haven't used any of these knives, here's how I would rate them. I'm rating in terms of what I would think about if trying to make a decision on whether to buy or not.
1. Civivi Elementum - good steel and a simple yet elegant shape; caveat that I don't like G-10 and so this knife is not sub-$50 when purchased with one of the wood handle options - WOULD BUY
2. Kershaw Natrix - good steel and the copper handles are fantastic; I'm not quite sure how I feel about the blade shape - WOULD BUY
3. Steel Will Cutjack - good steel and I really like the shape of this knife; but I do not like G-10 and I think the pattern in the handle scales is REALLY ugly - WOULD NOT BUY (but if they change the handle I would reconsider)
4. Ontario Rat II - good steel; another nope on the G-10 and there's something unattractive about the overall shape - WOULD NOT BUY
5. Kershaw Cryo II - I really prefer metal handles over just about anything; but the steel is meh and that takes this one out of the running for me - WOULD NOT BUY
6. Boker Strike - I'd like this shape better in a fixed blade knife; meh steel and G-10 - WOULD NOT BUY
7. Spyderco Tenacious - meh steel, nope on the G-10, and I don't really like the look of Spyderco knives - WOULD NOT BUY

The Boker Strike is a fav also.. The pocket EDC knife I carry the most is my Kizer Begleiter in OD Green.
All my knives are in OD Green besides the Boker Strike.. Great list!!
The knife that I would put on the list is $54 so just a little bit more money but it is worth it. It is the sog terminus xr (the red one)
My carry is a skif sturdy it's a rather bulky knife, frame lock very strong knife and I chose it for the blade size being larger but I love skif knives cheaper steel but the sturdy is like $30 I think and I love it! All they're folders are very reasonable and hold a great edge
I have 3 cryos. One was smooth and buttery out of the box, the other two took a heck of a lot of breaking in, but once they were, they perform amazingly, with 0 of the issues mentioned beside the weight (which I like anyhow)
Honey badger in D2 or cr8 own both love both, ball bearing, smooth action
Can be had around $30 about 50 in D2
Question for you: for someone just getting into collecting knives for EDC and general use/display, what steps do you suggest taking immediately after purchasing a knife to maximize its life span? i.e. tighten everything down, re-edge the blade, breaking the knife down and cleaning it before use, etc.
Lube, since most use torque a torx set and a Sharpening kit. I suggest also Buy 3 starter knives price doesn't have to be over $100 each. This will cut down on overall wear and tear of your knives. So for me the CIVIVI Elementum, CRKT Caligo, and Kershaw Skyline work perfect for starters.
@@jacobbcox1985 Most knives use torx screws. Then you will need a set of torx screwdriver bits and a driver. Most common sizes are T6 T8 T10 but other sizes sometimes are used as well as types of screws like spanners, flathead and Philips. If you get a good bit set (I say good because cheap sets usually have bits that aren't hardened enough and the T6 can strip out easily), like the Wiha complete driver and bits set, and you should have every bit you'll need unless the knife maker use some proprietary system.
A torque wrench is something that measures the amount of torque you are tightening a bolt or other fastener to.

@@highdesertbiker Worksharp Precision sharpener system. The price and quality is very good from what I've seen and going into EDC I would spend what is needed and not much more. If you want quick and simple then go with the Worksharp Knife and Tool Ken Onion Edition.
I don’t have a Rat 2 but I really like my rat 1. The only problem with the Rat 1 is that it is a little heavy. I don’t like a heavy knife in my pocket. If you don’t need a 1 handed opening edc a Mercator K55K is the way to go. This is the only full size folder that you’ll absolutely forget is even in your pocket. It is a cool historically dated design that is much thinner than a bench made bugout. German quality for 35 dollars and everyone will want to handle it.
I have four of the knives. I carry my strike (d2 steel) more than any. I love my tenacious but wish they would at least have a D2 steel option. Spyderco could easily produce them at the same price point and would sell tons. Look forward to your posts!

I agree with the Civivi Elementum is a Great EDC but a little short for a big hand. So, I took the Civivi Shredder beautiful blade and the 2 best things about Civivi is the detent and they leave the blade without a billboard on the side. i.e. the action is pretty sweet as well!

I have several civivi knives. By far my favorite. You nailed it.You get a lot for the money.
There are a lot to choose from but owning a rat and it actually being less than 40. It doesn't hold an edge the longest of knives I have but overall I love it. The SOG trident would be my favorite of all time though. It stays sharp longer and is light depends on where you buy it. It can be anywhere between 40 and $80
As a fellow ham handed guy, I agree with your analysis of the R2D2. It's a great little beater, but in hard cutting it is just uncomfortable. The Tenacious is way more comfy and I'd carry one if I didn't already have the Para 3. Spydercos aren't pretty, but the Para, PM, and Tenacious are so damned comfy for any cutting task. Might have to pick up a Cutjack as I haven't tried them yet.
The Ontario Rat 1 D2 is silky smooth and costs about 40$ on Amazon. Highly highly recommend this knife and it fits in my XL edc belt organizer almost perfectly.
I just received my first Ontario rat 2 d2 and I love the knife and the hype is real bit its the most off centered knife i have ever got.
The Elementum is good but I think it's a little small. If you prefer a good full sized knife consider the Bestech Swordfish. Slim, nice action, good clip, 4 inch pointy blade.
Yea tenacious for sure bro! Ive owned 4 of them. No surration, ever. Rat 1 is also one of my favorite hard use knives, the rat 2 didnt get me though. I bought my dad a cryo 2 for his birthday a while back. Not a fan of the assisted opening and the weight. But he lost it within a week. Lol hes not a knife guy.

I like the Kershaw Cryo design but agree it is a little on the heavy side. I upgraded to the Benchmade Bugout which is now my go-to EDC but it's over $50.
Kizer Begleiter, pretty good option, 50$ now on BladeHQ and Amazon. Sleek, G10, VG10.

Another great budget knife to check out is the SOG Terminus XR with G10 scales. It's technically a little above $50, but I snagged one on black Friday for under $45. The XR locking system is great; I would say even better than the axis lock it's based on. It has great flipping action and D2 steel. I'd highly recommend it.
