    Take the wall down. Put the outlets down as floor outlets (trust me they come in handy). Since it's a floating floor and you have more of it weave the patch in. (meaning you will have to lift the floor around it to have longer pieces to replace vs short little patch pieces.) To do it now while the house is at this stage will save you major headaches later.

      I have a Victorian home that has a couple floor outlets ( you can get ones with brass, or other covers) or just install more in the walls if needed. Switches might already be duplicated on other walls. Another thing we have is a brass Central light switch.. So you can turn on and off 8 most used lights, its very convenient. We also have some switches that light up so you know they are on, especially the basement... They look like art, small.

      I agree in the floor, have electrical ran while the section of the floor is up and the electrician can run it to a switch. Or the plug in on the floor will be live and you could have an entrance table with 1 or 2 lamps on it.

    Becky you really made me laugh with your facial expressions during the “caulking the right way” talk and Josh nailing the trim on, that was hilarious and just what I needed today. As for the wall. Take it down and be done with it. You have flooring to knit it and, as you said ages ago, it will look so good with a sofa and a table or sideboard there, will bring a lot more light too. Stay safe x

    You know… since the wall is where the “hallway” is from one room to the other, you could always make an inlaid wood “rug” with different wood. Kinda like how they make transitional tile mosaics but with wood. That way it wouldn’t look like a silly patch. It would be deliberate. And you can have fun with it.

  • @sheba5203
    @sheba5203 2 ปีที่แล้ว +52

    I'm in favor of no wall there. It just looks out of place and as you said, "it's the first thing you see when coming into the front door and also blocks your view from the main entry." Make it your way so you can enjoy what you like best. The extra flooring can cover that area on the floor after the wall is removed. Your idea of an area/runner carpet would look great as well. Maybe you can repurpose that wall into the basement for preps or something else (with a coat of your choice of paint). Not sure what the wall is made of, so that's something else to consider.

    I agree with the other comments. Remove the pony wall, patch the flooring with matching planks and put the outlets in the floor. You'll definitely need them in a room that large and roomy! I have two of them in my great-room. I would never be able to plug in my end table lamps if we hadn't had them installed during construction.

    Your expressions when trying to talk through the nail gun was hilarious, very glad you kept it in. I am team no wall, put in floor outlets. If you put a couch right there with either end tables or a slim table behind the couch, you would still get the beautiful view walking into the room and be able to use the seating. (Or you could have two chairs there so you could walk right through) whatever you and Josh decide would work best for you. I loved that you didn’t edit out you being very ‘patient’ waiting to talk while Josh was nailing the trim. 😂😂 I got a good laugh from your expressions and thought to myself, yeah that’s me right there. My hubs & I have always done house projects too. I thought that contraption wall was def an eye soar and you should take it all down. Don’t patch the floor but reweave those boards in and turn the light switches into floor outlets. It’ll be great!!! Removing the wall allows you freedom with your furniture placement and will totally open the entrance view. The floor outlets simply give you the power if/when you need it. Good luck. You’re doing great. And kudos to Renee!!

    My husband and I turned a full wall into a half-wall in our home and it was a whole production. Like you felt, half walls can be extremely wobbly since they only connect with the floor so you'll have to end up tearing it out entirely anyway in order to bolt heavy reinforcement to the foundation to keep it from just rocking around. At that point, and with that view? Absolutely tear it down and enjoy your big room! You can always break it up with furniture like a couch with a long table behind it if needed.

    • @namastenurse

    As far as your pronunciation of the word “caulk”, I offer a quick English lesson. First of all, the letter ‘L’ is silent. Next, the vowels ‘au’ make the ‘aw’ sound like in the word ‘saw’. So phonetically it would be spelled: Cawk and it rhymes with hawk. That’s all I’ve got on that subject. Isn’t the English language a blast❣️? I’m so loving your channel and watching your progress as you DIY your new home. It’s so awesome. Definitely would take the wall all the way out because it will distract from Josh's beautiful wood working!! A good flooring person could properly stagger the wood planks you have in the garage and you would never be able to tell that the wall was there. Chances are you would be able to reconfigure the electrical so that it would be properly placed on your wall. That will appear to double the size of your room! Good luck!

  • @Hilfairmont

    I'd definitely take down the wall and patch/feather in the new floor. Your eye wants to move thru the space to the view and the wall, even if it's a half wall, will disrupt that natural flow and draw your eye down to the wall. Well worth capping or moving electrical :) floor outlets can be installed and a console table could be placed there to cap the back of a couch and can hold a lamp or two. Still keeps it open but provides flexibility and usability

Anchors the room. Electrical switches would be nearby as you sit on sofa. But floor outlets would solve that dilemma. St. Johns Wort needs to be tinctured fresh because the active ingredient dissipates quickly once the plant is picked. The dried plant has less active ingredient left than the fresh blossoms. If you picked it and let it dry, you can use it for tea, but increase the amount of plant material in the tea ball.

    Yes. Take the wall down and add floor outlets … you can also do an inlay on the floor if you don’t have enough flooring for the entire area. You can also have Josh build a nice furniture piece to put there to cover that area…. Something that had glass and lighting inside to utilize the electric in the floor. I’m sure whatever you do it will look great! Thanks for taking us all on this journey! ❤️

      We have repaired wobbly railings that were sheet rocked by opening up the sheet rock on one side and placing two bolts through the base into the floor joist. The other question is there floor and the quality of subfloor underneath. I personally would not spend time trying to repair a floor that I know I am going to replace in the next ten years. Think about how the kitchen remodel might have a domino effect into that area.

    My husband was a professional painter until he retired. He's says "Good for you, you've got all the steps in painting down pat". He also says you wouldn't believe how many people use caulking that isn't paintable. He's had to correct many jobs like this. It's so nice to watch your beautiful homestead come together. You and Josh make a great team!

    Just in case someone does not know this about Raspberry leaves. Raspberry leaves are rich in vitamins and minerals, including vitamins A, C, and E, as well as iron, calcium, and potassium. Improved uterine health. The tea is thought to increase blood flow to the uterus and strengthen uterine muscle fibers. This may help improve the effectiveness of contractions during labor

    Be careful leaving all your tools out with tradesmen coming into your home. They may hire new workers that are not fully vetted. At least take a picture of your equipment, tools, photo equipment, computers, yard equipment, etc… for insurance purposes.

    I can warmly recommend making ointment with St. John's wort. This is how we do it (old recepie from Sweden): pick the flowers and fill up a whole empty bottle. Fill with olive oil so it covers the flowers. (Make sure all flowers are covered so it wont get mold on the surface). Put the bottle in a sunny window so that the bottle is reached by direct sunlight for at least 30 days. Strain the oil and mix with warm beeswax. Pour into small glass containers - and give to friends and family who will ask for a new jar every year! Good for anxiety but also pain in joints, on the chest when coughing and more. The only warning is not put on skin if you are going to be directly sun.

    When my parents were redoing their main floor, they tiled the front of the living room by the door in hex tiles and wanted the hardwood flooring to meet the tiles in almost like a honeycomb shape. But they encountered a problem where the sub flooring actually made the tile and hardwood floor like 1/16” different and had to come up with a creative solution. So, my mum came up with the idea of having a “stony river” across the threshold between the tile and hardwood! They did stones in like I think plaster or something? (I’m not an expert). But it allowed the floor to move that 1/16” organically, solving the problem but ALSO making a really nice design feature! Maybe the hole in the floor where the hardwood was could be a pop of colour, either stained wood in an ornate pattern or maybe a different kind of material that’s meaningful to you (like a coloured marble or something?)

    St. John’s wart has anti depression properties. It will interact with some meds so be sure to check. Also it takes time to build a level. Great herb to have! Lucky you!

      Thank you for commenting with this information. Many people don’t think to let their Dr. Know that they are taking herbal supplements. You are right, they can interact with some Perscription medications. One of them being Hormonal birth control. Such as the pill and implants. Thus making them less effective.

    • @elizabeth930
      @elizabeth930 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Please, please don't use St. John's wort medicinally. It can very easily have quite dangerous side effects, and it interacts very badly with most medications...plus people never remember to mention it to their doctors!

    Also for the mini conservatory area where you took off the curtains and left the inner blinds you should look into outdoor roller blinds kinda like garage doors theyre automatic you dont have to see them inside and you can flick a switch and they roll down and block out all light and protect the windows for security as well. Not just like people security but hail and storm damage or you know at night to block out heat or cold. That way you can ditch all curtains and blinds on the inside. And you can still have a mini greenhouse thing without having to deal with inside blinds and curtains and any possible mould or dirt on them AND you can have a full view out your back windows without anything impeding that. Yet still have privacy etc when you want. And of course no need to worry about pets or kids getting tangled in curtains and blinds AND no cleaning of them (which is the biggest pain for those types of blinds)

    Find a beautiful old sideboard similar to to a long wide buffet type matching your wood color wood work, or have someone build it, attach to the floor and install the electrical. Both sides can have drawers and doors , perfect for all the needs, you can see out over it, keeping all electric, etc just an idea, you two are so young, lucky and energetic, and such fun to watch!!

    For the flooring under the “floating” wall…. I think you should do a partial floor replacement. Maybe from the front door up just past the wall. It will be much less cost and it will look even all around :)
