  • We bought a 40-acre homestead but it’s not for us!
That may sound strange, but we’ve had a dream to host large events and teach real-life homesteading classes for a long time now, and this property, just ½ mile from our current home, became available and we bought it!
You’ll have to watch the tour to hear more of our vision for the property, but I’m so excited to finally be able to share this news with you!

I'm so excited just listening to you talk about it!!! What a God-thing! I'd be positively giddy and ecstatic! What I love most is that God clearly orchestrated the sale of this particular property for you guys, specifically, and that you have plans to refresh it, and to preserve the history of the place. May God continue to bless this endeavor! 😍

What an exciting new adventure! If you don't have a source already, check out the Slabhaus in Mt Vernon for live edge wood for the mantle. The wood is all harvested locally, some from old homesteads.

We have an airbnb cottage on our 1 acre property in CA, which I manage. Just FYI managing it to maintain "super Host" status can be time consuming. But, I really enjoy hosting and making our cottage garden enjoyable for our guests, since we are retired. Our guests enjoy our flower gardens, vegetable garden, and chickens. Good luck to you. It's going to be lovely!

A year ago we bought a 1934 home on a 5-acre farm with one bathroom that was a later addition. The floor had water damage, & there was significant mildew on the shower wall. We gutted it, & as my husband began to dig in the dirt crawlspace beneath to assess the block foundation, he discovered the bathroom builders had not poured a concrete footer. So we ended up jacking up the room, removing the cement blocks, pouring concrete, & stacking new block. If he hadn't been poking around the foundation, he might not have realized the lack of footer, & we might've built back our new bathroom "on sand." I am so relieved we did not do that, even tho' it became a much larger project, so I wanted to share that with you.

Take the window and make a sign with it for your property, you could either have it possibly “sand blasted” or even vinyl with the name of your homestead. I love how you speak of hearing signs from God, as my Husband and I are Christians and have had our own experiences with getting signs from God. God is so Mighty in how he does things and opens doors in His timing🙌❤️! My husband and I have wanted to move to NC from NY for 20 years now and just this May he opened the doors for us. Now, we are just waiting on NY states closing for the selling of our house! Closing here in NY is running 60 to 90 day’s, however we know this is God’s plan for us as the job he was offered in NC in May is holding the position for him! God is so Mighty!

I appreciate your attention to detail. I am an avid Airbnb user, and the ceiling in that room would not concern me at all. You might want to reconsider for now until the income pays for that repair. I agree with the character of a home being important and when I stay at an Airbnb I look for older homes and not restored ones. I am 66 and use these homes to step back in the time of my past. I am staying at an older Airbnb in Mississippi and it is an older home with all older furniture. I choose this home for that reason. I am excited to go thru this with you. Enjoy!

Awesome-sauce and congratulations on your purchase! Just a suggestion, a sleeper sofa or Murphy bed in the living room so families with more than two kids or older kids of different sexes can have a place to sleep. We always find it hard to find a place with three beds for our family and think it gets overlooked at times by landlords, property management and the like.

Consdier putting in some camper pads with electric hook ups. You can rent them out when you're not having seminars and offer them to your seminar people as an alternative to staying off farm at a hotel. Lots of people have campers and would love to overnight during travel or stay a few days on a farm.

I'm coming into this a month later, but want to add my best wishes that your wishes and plans will come true. I really appreciate your excitement and enthusiasm - and know that you will make a wonderful go of things. With almost everything...I can say YES!!!! Go you! You gush about the barn-type woods, which I can really identify with, and underscore how important it is to save and, if not in the same place, upcyle the wood into other parts. Love your live edge idea!
HOWEVER...there is total confusion here about one aspect of your plans. I absolutely don't understand why, with a 1916 farmhouse and home-built cabinets (kitchen and wardrobe) and wall coverings out of gorgeous wood - that you are going to PAINT over that wood? It seems like you're defeating the purpose of why people would enjoy staying there. I won't argue the pros and cons of a dishwasher. But I think that most people would come to an old farmhouse to enjoy, as much as possible, the more "historic" aspects of it. Yes, you need to repair and change a lot. But painted wood Air B and Bs are everywhere. How often can you find HAND-MADE cabinets, still solid and usable? I work with natural woods as much as possible - and truly don't understand this fad of painting over things and losing the beauty of the wood grain. Especially with wood prices in this day and age... (Okay, enough "soap-boxing")
I do congratulate you on your being able to become the owners/wards of a place that means so much to you. I love the fact that you and your family have had close ties with it all your lives - and wish you all the best with realizing your plans for seminars and such. What great surroundings you will create. All the best!

You are going to eventually narrow it down to just a few things and then expand it out again. I can tell you are really excited. Your barn will be so cool when it is done, but it is really going to cost you a lot of money. It will take a lot of work. I am happy for you. It is a process. I know you are right about the black gold. Barn two is just a lot of labor and way less money. I am glad you plant to steward the land so well. Congratulations.

This testimony really helped my husband and I! Especially the fact that you weren't even looking for anything. Chris and I are being called to leave our Province and we don't have any idea where to go, opposite of your situation, and we ARE looking. But we didn't know how to figure out where to go, HOW to go, how to know, etc and the story of the Gideon fleece is a great reminder of how to know when we find the one. Code Designs - I disagree with you concerning that they were able to do this without God's help. He helped them because He made sure that they were able to get the pre-approval for the loan. HE (GOD) also gave them the A-OK via the contractor that they had come in and look at it.
If it wasn't for God they would not have been able to get it that quickly.

Hallelujah and amen! Rejoicing with you at the Lord's blessing and obvious confirmation for you. Love the knotty pine paneling in the living room and those craftsman details of the build-ins. Yes, keep those doors! One of my favorite houses is a mother-in-law's 1920s bungalow with those same tiny closets, but original charm like that just can't be replaced, so keep what you can. Happy to hear that you will be saving as much of the outbuilding wood as possible. God has great things in store, how awesome that He is letting you partner with Him 🙂

Thought, 2nd bedroom, instead of a regular side table, Look for a 3 drawer dresser to use as both side table and dresser, if People are staying for only a few nights or a week, that is plenty of storage, then you can use a small side table and a reading chair in that corner you see as you walk in. corner to sit and read in, basically. Congrats on the new property!

    How exciting Melissa. CONGRATULATIONS!
Make sure the cattle didn't feed on hay with GrazeOn or similar chemicals. Lots of people are having compost problems this year, myself included.

I'm an event/wedding planner and this would make a beautiful setting for small weddings. Have the wedding in the pasture and the reception in the "barn". Love it!!

Congrats you guys! Having lived in that area for a bit we know how hard it is to find properties for sale, especially given the water rights issues in that area. So, well done, and best of luck with everything!

Congratulations! Wonderful property and maybe a long time in the future the little house could be your retirement home or you could build another home for your family.

You could use the window for a cold frame. PLEASE don't paint the cabinets and closets !!!!! Leave them so it will be retro looking!! You could put bunk beds in the second/smaller bedroom. Love the older homes with their funny quirks. God bless.
