    Friends! It was a friendly spider that crawled behind my ferments. I noticed it and after I was done filming I put him outside. I don't mind spiders but I do prefer them outside my house to eat all the nasty bugs :)

      I felt that smash. I've seen a family on TH-cam who made their long term storage last a year and yeah every meal wasn't perfect but her husband was out of work and she has 6 young children..... I can only imagine her relief at her cans of food and bulk items to feed them kids decent food.

    A little tip… The strip of metal on your shelves below your cans, paint that little strip with chalkboard paint, and get the erasable chalk board markers. You can write what’s on each shelf that you can see, and Josh can see it without having to touch all the jars it just makes organization easier. You can also wipe it off and put something else there when you’re done. Great job on the basement!

    Hi Becky, chiming in with many others to say, invest in securing your shelves! After dropping a jar of pickles accidentally with a similar set up to yours, I invested in rubber floor mats and secured metal straps to the front and back of the shelves to keep the jars from sliding off. You are such an inspiration, thank you for sharing your journey with us!

    I am a 70 year old Aussie lady (I live just north of Sydney) and we are coming into Spring and it is a beautiful time of year. My husband has always been the gardener but recently he is unable to garden with surgery coming up on a knee issue and so cannot dig the garden. I have a heart condition and have to pace myself but I have been given free reign of the vegetable garden (not large) and it was suggested to me to try a "no till garden" which I noticed in your potato haul and I am very interested. I have the assistance of my 13 year old grandson who loves to garden and he has cleared the garden for me and is helping me plant. We had a lovely day picking out seedlings and now to plant. Tomatillos are not available here in Australia to my knowledge and I came across some seeds from the "Lost Seed Company" in Tasmania and put them in two years ago and my niece by marriage is thrilled and I have so much pleasure in seeing the eyes light up when I give them to her. My sister in law is from Mexico City and her son met my new neice when visiting family and they have set up home in our city. She is a brilliant cook and I am excited by her cooking the tomatillos. This year I hope to have a better crop for her to enjoy. Love to you and your gorgeous family. XXXXXXXX

      So your the one who stole my sun 😘, I’m in northern Minnesota and boy the daylight is getting shorter and shorter !!! We are heading into winter, ugh, I just dread the bitter cold with -30/-40 F temps and several feet of snow ❄️
      You will love the no till !!! If you plant potatoes, try the “Ruth Stout method”, you can look it up but just cover your seed potatoes with straw and water, so easy to harvest with no digging !!!
      I pray God gives you an abundant harvest and good health for you and your husband !!
      Blessings

      I was telling her she needs to have an inch or inch and a half "lip" on the back of the higher shelves on the racks. Then the jar would "bump" and let her know to stop pushing while she could still put the food up and over them.

      I know!! She's talking and pushing more jars, not really paying too much attention to them. I was waiting for them to fall off the back side or her hand catching one of the front ones right there on the edge!! Hi Becky! My in-laws bought us a stand up freezer and my 7 year old left it open before we left for the hospital to have our youngest daughter. It was open for 4 days, and everything was lost. I was devastated! I got on Amazon and bought child safety strap locks. Look them up! I put one on and it was a game changer because now, everyone in the house knows you MUST snap it to ensure it's closed. I have not had issues since and it's been almost two years! I really hope this helps. I absolutely love your channel. You really are an inspiration! 😊

    Hi Becky. Not sure how Washington state weather is. We use energy no matter how you look at it. But just though I would share this with you. I do t grow all my own food yet. But when it’s on sale I buy big. I do all my canning outside as it will waste less energy and I keep my home cool in the summer. Once winter hits I move it inside. Just a tip and thought I’d share as I see you try to reduce your carbon foot print. Also I have natural gas piped outside for my grill and burners which make life so much easier than getting. Propane tanks filled. Like your videos and Josh does good work! Keep it up!

    Just an ergonomic suggestion for your upright freezer... Not a huge deal, for sure, but most newer freezers/fridges have reversible doors. For convenience sake, you might want to swap the direction of your new freezer's door swing. Since you seem to approach the freezer from the right, being able to open and access it from that side will be so much easier in the long run. I really love following your channel and have recommended it to so many people! I get so much inspiration from you, Becky! Thanks so much for being you! ♥

    Becky, please learn from my mistake! Don't wear flip flops when you are in a hurry and accessing your upright freezer. I did on 9/2-- the door whacked my foot hard, completely removing my large toe nail. My podiatrist said it will be a full year for the nail to regrow completely. Love the idea of using those wooden craft crates for the potato storage. I completely agree with you about the onion amounts...it is so easy to go through that much! Your wonderful home canning will also eventually make lovely baby food. Maybe you could get some inexpensive foam floor mats from Harbor Freight to put in front of your canning shelves for cushioning.

    I kept waiting for a jar to drop off the back of one of those shelves as Becky stacked them and kept pushing them back. Totally didn't expect her to accidentally drop jars in front of her.
    ETA: Becky, I forgot to mention that if you get a child safety lock for the new upright freezer, you won't have an issue about accidentally leaving the door open. You'll need the child safety stuff in the next year or so anyway. Putting one on the freezer earlier might give you some peace of mind about whether the upright freezer is secure or not.

    In Norway we have a bunch of baby safety products and one is for the fridge/freezer, and it’s a clip. You put it on the door and on the “wall” of the freezer. If you have that on your stand up freezer you’ll always know if your freezer is closed 😊

    Loving seeing your new home come together!
    3 things that sprang to mind watching this video is you may want to consider adding a wooden ‘lip’ to both sides of each metal shelf so if pushing from the other side they don’t fall off & break
    The second is you need a bench height rolling cart you can move about to put cans or process food like those potatoes on
    The third is to label the front of each shelf so you can easily see from standing in front of the shelves what is on each shelf. You could also maybe write the ‘ideal’ number of jars & how many years worth that will last to make it easy for next time canning

    Very nice to look at your hard work and see all of your harvest!.
    A tip, since I have a simmilar setup with my shelfs to walk behind. put a smal pice of wood (or a strip of metal) between your shelfposts on the 'backside', so when you fill your shelfs from the front, there is no worry that you will push a jar down on the backside. I have one on both sides, so if I fill it from the back, and I pusch jars to the front, I dont push one down also.

  • @bettypearson5570
    @bettypearson5570 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    You should 0ut a strip along the edges of your shelves to provide at least a 1/2 "lip as well as getting those shelves anchored. If there is an earthquake you are going to have quite a mess from all those broken jars.

    I love those shelves and all your organizing! It's just a beautiful area!! I was so afraid you were going to push a jar off the back of the shelf. I was holding my breath every time. 😂 I saw a person use a bungy cord that she stretched across the back so she didn't have to worry about it. Just an idea. You are so awesome with all you do! Watching you always gives me the push I need to get up and get more done. Blessings!

    Love to watch your channel and find the information, tips and tricks you share to be very helpful. I told my daughter and now she is also a fan. We like to compare our take on your different videos. One of our discussions had to do with the "grocery store" you set up in your basement. While watching you "shop" and filling your shopping bag to take upstairs my daughter has a brilliant idea. She suggested you install a "dumb waiter" to transfer the food. This would be safer than lugging those heavy jars up a flight of stairs when you need to cook or to carry down newly canned jars. I know Josh helps

    I use dry erase markers that have magnets on them. One adheres to each one of my 4 chest freezers. I write on the side the general contents. So while I have a beef freezer, poultry freezer and pork freezer...my Boston butt had to go into the poultry freezer. So it said "poultry" and Boston butt. Just an idea.

    We have the monitors in our upright freezer. My husband called me from work one day and asked if I had gotten something out of the freezer earlier. I said yes and went to look at the freezer and the door was slightly ajar. The monitor had alerted his phone. They are a wonderful idea especially since we have a fourth of a cow in that freezer.
    I have the same canning shelves you have and I label my shelves using the small sticky notes. It is nice to not have to look through each group of jars, I can just look for the correct label.
    You are going to be so prepared for your family and will get to enjoy the extra time with your baby! I wish I had half of your energy!

    Hey Becky can I suggest some kind of barrier for the shelving, not sure if that can be purchased seperately or maybe crafted just to secure the jars on the shelf for when your packing (ngl that gave me anxiety) or if the shelving or jars are bumped into or even God forbid an eartquake.

    Regarding making sure your upright freezer is never left open.
    I use a child proof latch on my fridge and freezer because when I close the fridge door the freezer door comes open. Plus it helps my grandkids remember to close the doors.
    The latch is for the toilet lid but it’s the best thing I’ve found to keep the doors closed 🦩

    A tip from one who works in a lab where we have a lot of freezers. Empty freezers heat up very fast when you open them. The warm air is sucked in when you open it. When you have a lot of space open in your standing freezer, just put (preferably) styrofoam boxes in there. The cold air in the box will stay in the box and doesn't have to be frozen again. .

  • @YasuTaniina
    @YasuTaniina 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Chest freezers are also more efficient. They stay cold longer and loose heat slower, but for freezer meals, if you have the space and the money to get an extra freezer that's awesome.
    Another tip for organizing freezer meals, I got a frame from the dollar store that I put by my freezer that I use as a dry erase board. Everytime I put more freezer meals in my freezer I write them down right by the freezer, and I cross them off/erase them as I take them out to thaw

    Wow you are amazing . I love fresh food and it’s a good thing you are doing to stock up that way you don’t have to grocery shop for awhile . The price of food is crazy right now . I got 97 dollars last night and only got like 5 bags of stuff . It’s sad because I know people can’t afford this food they sell at the grocery store . Well some can’t afford it . But anyway your awesome and love your videos :)

    Tip for later.... get some wide masking tape and label the shelves. After the baby comes and you've got helpers running around grabbing stuff for you, it will make it easier and faster for them to locate and retrieve items from the storage area for you.

  • @melinaz3385
    @melinaz3385 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    You can buy extra shelving racks for the standing freezer, it will help organize the food because it was very hard to get something from under 4 other things and you want to keep your freezers as full as possible to maintain the cold factor. Our bottom seal went on the standing freezer but that can be fixed.

    I love watching pantries be organized! It's the most relaxing thing in the world to watch. Amazon sells freezer alarms for monitoring the temperatures inside to make sure that the freezer is working correctly and they also sell alarms for making sure that the doors are always closed. I think you can even get ones that link to your phone so you can always monitor them.
