Oh my God. I'm only 10 minutes in and Rex Murphy has said it all and has said it so eloquently! I have been watching this protest for two weeks and I am in awe how peacefully and civilly the Canadian truckers and people have conducted themselves. There are no words to describe how disgusted I feel toward Trudeau and his shabby treatment of the truckers. SHAME ON TRUDEAU!

The World Economic Forum is using Canada as test subject 1, and I think they overestimated our politeness.
The proudest moment of my life as a Canadian was with the Convoy in Ottawa. We were probably for the first time to have freedom rather than live as a slave and be under tyranny. I heard a Canadian goose the other day and immediately thought about the truckers. They are great and honest men and woman with integrity which is void in all of our institutions and their many agencies.

I happened to be in Ottawa during the protests. Never seen anything like it.
My gf and I walked through a few times and everyone was super respectful, loving & peaceful. No one yelled at us for wearing masks. Didn’t see any Nazi or confederate flags. I don’t understand why the Canadian government did not try to have an open dialogue with the protesters. Makes me sad.

You didn't see any swastikas or Nazi flags but a quick search on the internet will show that they were there. In fairness, the greater majority of the protesters didn't want anything to do with these far right radicals. Wherever one falls on the political spectrum, our need for confirmation bias filters out what we don't want to see. Confirmation bias is a powerful drug. It's the crack for the new information age.

If anything, it was more annoying to have the protesters there because I had to cancel two airbnbs, heard train/truck horns ALL night and downtown & parliament was completely off limits during my trip.
I’m just saying that diplomacy should at least be on the table. Moreover, the media depiction (imo) was not accurate, the majority of folks were not some extremist right wing faction waving Nazi flags. They are people, they are Canadian citizens, protesting in -35 degree weather because they believe in a cause and want to be heard. We need to listen to one another and try to figure out a compromise. Regardless if you agree with what they are protesting.

2.) Post-January 6th press narrative
3.) George Floyd/BLM press narrative

Trudeau has set the standard: smash windows, burn buildings, attack policemen, attack your fellow citizens and he'll meet with you. Stage a peaceful, non destructive protest and he will not meet with you. If a protest supports a “righteous” cause, then actions and affiliations don’t matter, if the protest is not deemed “righteous” then the slightest hint of malfeasance is enough reason to ‘trample’ all over their rights.

I was a student on the front line of the Velvet Revolution in Czechoslovakia in November 1989. We brought down the communist regime by turning up in town squares big and small, every day... It started off small, then more and more people turned up each day... After about a week the whole country was out, united 🇨🇿 We kept coming... There was no violence. There was hope, love and longing for freedom. We faced the police with our hands up in the air, shouting "Our hands are bare!" It was magical and it worked. The government crumbled because we were non violent, persistent and huge in numbers.
Now following events in Canada daily from London, it reminds me so much of that time. Praying for Canadians to keep going... Please don't give up! Yes, I remember this event and the events in Gdansk. I support and hope for the Communist regimes. Unfortunately, you are misinterpreting what has happened in Canada. This was not a peaceful protest that was broken up by a regime that you fought in 1989. It was a protest infringing on the rights of other Canadians who believed that the best way is to follow the guidelines and mandates set for health agencies to stop this pandemic. These people did not care for the noise or safety hazards that they caused to the citizens of Ottawa. After a 4 week occupation, they said enough was enough and started to critize the city, the provincial, and federal governments for their inaction. When the Emergency Act was invoked. The first thing that was done was to warn the protesters at least a few days before actions were taken. When the Ukraine was invaded thousands of protesters showed in Toronto but the did not block any road ways only one lane of traffic because of the overflow and the police made sure in a peaceful manner that none of protesters were hurt. You fought for what was right and risked your lives. The "Freedom Convoy" protested for selfish reasons and most of transport drivers were vaccinated and tried to distance themselves from the protesters. God Bless You for what you did in 1989.

An incredible head to head on many issues. Some of these issues I did know existed. It is a sad time in Canada. Support for other nations outpaces support for our own. Take care of those at home first. All parties need to do this. When the Emergency Act was invoked, the border crossings were already open (including the Ambassador Bridge), and a judge had already ordered the truckers in Ottawa to stop honking their horns at night (which they obeyed). The streets of Ottawa were open to traffic (except for Wellington). So the emergency amounts to truckers illegally parked on Wellington Street, making it inconvenient for members of Parliament to pick up their lattes on Sparks Street before heading up Parliament Hill. The emperors (Liberals, Tories, NDP, the lot of them) have been seen by all to have no clothes. We need martial law to enforce ... parking violations!?!?!?!?
I don't even follow Canadian politics--at all--and even to my naive, historically uninformed judgement, the whole response to a genuine working class uprising, was bizarre beyond comprehension--to the level of political suicide for the ruling party--that I cannot understand how stupid they must have been to think that this was a good strategy, for them, going forward. They've shot themselves in both their feet. Calling the protestors "Fringe, Nazi, Racists, Misogynists, Insurrectionists" was the last straw, especially since I have been watching all the ground reports from videos posted by the public and independent journalists, and the people protesting were anything but.

Great interview. As a Canadian I am thoroughly disgusted by the actions of JT. His insults and sneers toward a large segment of the Canadian population is an outrage. Then invoking a war time law to quell their absolutely peaceful protest as they waved Canadian flags, danced, hugged, and sang O’Canada. How dare they object to his mandatory vaccine for truckers. Actually, technically it is not a war time law. No military was used. It was the Conservatives who decided that the War Measures Act was to over reaching and that no government should have that much authority. If you think the Conservatives would not invoke the act you are seriously underestimating them. Also try looking at both sides of the equation. Such as the citizens of Ottawa who had to put up with the "protest", economic costs, and potential job losses with the border blockades. Ask yourself why a high percentage of the truckers got vaccinated. Also who actually started mandating truckers to be vaccinated? Hint our southern neighbour's.
