    @stargirlamy : not sure what you mean by head collar, yes a horse can travel in these, but they do not break so you don't want to leave them on when horse is not attended to or checked on.

    I love rope halters! I love how they are lightweight and fascinating to see on horses. I’d never rode a horse with a rope halter before, I’d sure love to try! I’ve been force to ride horses with stupid bits multiple times cause they were not my horses. I’d love to have a dream horse to ride with a rope halter with a western saddle every day. Best of all! I know how to tye rope halters!

    I think it is important to mention that you do not want to leave the rope halter on a horse in the pasture or over night. I have known of two different horses from two different owners that have had to be put down because they got the rope halter caught in their shoe while laying down to sleep. They get it caught and then roll around trying to get loose again until they twist their gut... then all their organs shut down. It's pretty sad to go check on your horse and see it all beat up and near death because of a rope halter... and I am surprised you didn't mention that.

    See this postet two years ago, not sure you'll read it. I ride/walk my pony in a rope halter, but I transport in an regular collar. As he's pointing out, the snap is the weakest. If the horse panics in the trailer, the snap is more likely to break so that the horse is free

    Never turn a horse out leaving a halter of any kind on your horse! They can severely hurt themselves by getting tangled in brush, putting out or injuring their eyes and a whole myriad of things. Instead, learn how to catch your horse and have him stand while you put on a halter. Here's a technique to it. Always, a cotton rope for a halter. Nylon rope on a horse is an accident waiting to happen. You can do more with a handful of oats, a carrot or Apple, than a whip, spurs or a latigo. Your horse wants to please you like a big ole border collie. He'll do just about anything for you if you treat him right. If you have a horse throwing a temper tantrum and acting out, that's your fault! You have a confused animal that YOU aren't sending the right message to him. They aren't just giddy-up, go's! Learn how to handle a horse, and you'll have a compare the rest of his life. Take it from someone who's been around old cowboys and horses for 50 year or more. Train yourself before thinking you can handle a horse. In all things be kind! If you don't know something ask a 'Hand', to teach you. This fella is a Hand!

    Rick, should I get a rope halter (by LazyKcorral) or a hackamore with bosal?. Sam is a 7 year no broken horse yet. We are training him now. He has been doing nothing till now. He is very smart, learn faster and like to please. However he likes to do what he wants. So checking all your videos now and I love the way you treat your horses. I just starting buying all the things he needs and bought a side pull halter with metal (I know I should not but I did not see your videos till now) so I want to change it for a rope halter or hackamore with bosal (if you have any recommendation for this one too). So I would truly appreciate your advice. Thanks much. I can buy both too if you recommend them for different trainings. Pam.

    My lord.
    I bought a buckskin filly and a cremello(Didn't really want the Cremello, but got her anyway) at 6 months of age. My buckskin(Jazz) was a friendly confident horse and she still is. She was easy to halter break as she followed me anyway. However, her half sister, the cremello (Boo), was spooky, not very confident.
    We gave her to my mother's friend which was a mistake. Her friend said she will work with her, but here now two and a half years later (3 year olds now), Jazz is broke, nice ground manners, lunges, flexes, neck reins, amazing breaks, you don't have to be in the trailer to load her. And there is Boo, who chases people in the pasture even if your not catching her, will kick you if you get near her, pins her ears, throws her front end at you, hard to catch, can't load etc.
    She saw me use my rope halter and she asked me why. I said I use it to make her uncomfortable when she makes the wrong decision. The lady tells me she thought that she needed to make her horse comfortable so she padded her flat halter. I looked at her and said,"Hun, when that horse acts up, she will drag your ass across the yard. Just watch."
    And I did.
    And I laughed

    Another boarder once had someone come see her mustang(that's a whole other fiasco!) about leasing him. I happened to be near by to handle another horse who I always use a rope halter with. This guy proceeded to comment how he believed a rope halter was cruel and recommended that the mustang owner get a leather halter for him. I just walked away. There was no point engaging, he never came back. Which was a good thing for the horse. You know what they say, "a LITTLE knowledge is a dangerous thing."

    I like making my own rope halters and mecate. (Yes, it's a girly issue, I like to add a little paracord bling , but I DO ride and we haul to all sorts of fun charity and training events - I don't just feed him treats and tap him with magic sticks LOL!)
    I prefer a 3/8" halter and a 1/2" mecate and I can whip them out in nylon, but I find it really hard to bury the end of the splice in braided cotton rope. Do you, or does anyone, have any tips/suggestions?
    (I was wondering if the type of fid with a channel and a tongue to catch the rope might make things easier?)

    I have a question about rope halters. Sometimes I have trouble getting control and steering on the ground with my arab gelding. I've considered a rope halter, but because of his dished face he seems especially sensitive to pressure on the nose. Would this be to "strong" a halter for him? And if I use it, will the new found control remain the same if I have to put him in a regular halter or bridle for showing or turnout? Thank you!

    It's a little baby Buddy. Hey Rick, is his halter a 5mm or a 4mm, if you know? I know it seems irrelevant, just curious. I'm getting into making my own halters and other bitless gear, and I really like the thinner rope for a lot of my projects. Since a lot of it is braided, it doesn't stay 4mm and ends up more like an inch wide. Most rope halters are a bit over 6mm and I suck at tying bulky stuff. Don't think I wanna go thinner than what Buddy has on. You need to go pick yourself up a new baby, I know we're all dying to see one!

  • @emmamorgan8696

    I have a question (no hate, just curious). I've been taught (UK) that a head collar that can break easily with pressure is essential in certain situations. If a horse is tied up and spooks (for whatever reason) the head collar or tie breaks so the horse can escape without panicking further and hurting themselves in a struggle. What are the thoughts from people that use rope halters and ties that do not break?
    I've seen a horse fall over on hard ground when their tie failed to.

    • @introvertedequinesamsara6593
      @introvertedequinesamsara6593 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      He thinks that it teaches a horse that it can get away. If I'm out camping with my horse out in the middle of nowhere and if my horse spooked and it's halter brakes and she runs away I'll be doomed. It's not good it's better to teach a horse that they can't get away they'll have to stand and wait for you.

    • @introvertedequinesamsara6593
      @introvertedequinesamsara6593 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The brake away only teaches your horse to pull away. If that horse learned that it couldn't get away it wouldn't have gotten hurt. It's simple whiich is better.

    • @gerrycoleman7290
      @gerrycoleman7290 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Horse needs to have the opportunity to learn to give to pressure. If he is allowed to break free, he learn that pulling is the right answer. You want him to realize that pulling is the wrong
      answer. Set the horse up to succeed not to fail.

    • @arielldelarosa4221
      @arielldelarosa4221 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jurij frešer Depends... I ride on a loose rein, so I like mine around 9-10 feet (rope end to rope end).

    • @gerrycoleman7290
      @gerrycoleman7290 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends. I ride with the 12 foot lead line that I convert to reins. Interacting with the horses on the ground I like 12 foot length. Sometimes I use a 14 foot length if I am using a
      particular combination...........say one end I make a loop to put around the horse's neck tie it with a bowline knot, the other end tied to a post or tree limb, or other tie point.

    I transport my horse in her rope halter. I throw the lead over her back in the trailer and hook her to a quick-release trailer tie. In an emergency, I fully expect her to break that trailer tie. I will still have the halter and lead rope to take my panicked horse out of the trailer. I hope I NEVER encounter this situation!!

Her owner. . . not so much. She has made some progress with her but then Mrs. Starnes has to say this horse is too dangerous! You need all of this equipment and no one go near her she is too dangerous, you'll die! I swear that horse is ruined. 😒
