Especially children adopted later in life from an orphanage who have had to feel like they can only survive on their own - they also have a "fight or flight" instinct.
Sadly, many people think they don't have anything to learn when it comes to being around their horses, many of whom have had horses all their life, and compete at a high level . One I met just said "I haven't got time for all that, I have 10 horses to ride every day" They need to watch this!
No truer words have been said about horses. Really this video is about such a simple topic but can teach people who really listen about 90% of what they want to learn about horses.
DK Dempcey Knight DK , I agree wholeheartedly. Both Tanner and Buddy are handsome horses. Mr. T is a prime example of a wild stallion (now gelding). A little more compact and well muscled; they are sure footed and strong in order to live in their wild environment.
Wow, 11 years ago Montanna (Tanner) looked really different. Though I cannot help but think that Mr. T and Buddy in this video were secretly communicating to try trip up Rick. Thanks YT for recommending these old videos though. RIP Mr. T.
I must be real lucky with my horse. I have never had a problem leading him. We understand each other, and our personalities seem to compliment each other. He is not just a horse. He is my friend.
Good video, however I wish you had shown exactly what to do when a horse starts to try to get in front of you, and how you let him know that you are the lead horse. Thank you for all the time you take out of your day to make these videos.
+Eadie Camp If you watch his other videos and listen to what he says, you will get it, that's how I learned and overcame my fear of my own horse. He's got allot of videos to pick and choose from and you'll learn from every one of them.
Thanks for your videos. I am now married to the debt i may invest of owning a horse. haha. But all seriousness, I've grown up around horses, but now is my chance to really be a horse person with a mare my cousin gave me. I have been watching your tutorials on horse behavior (especially with ear pinning which she likes to do) and everything you are saying, I am now starting to understand what I'm doing WRONG with her. So I'll be tuning in quite often seeing as I'm on my own with her
I like this guys approach. Good stuff. I`ve had some butt head horses but later found out I was setting them up to act that way. Either you take the leadership position or they will. When you own a Clydesdale draft horse you definitely want the leadership spot. Great video.
@Jamelith Well, it's important to know when a horse is most likely going to kick if you go behind it or not. If you own the horse, it's important that you teach him to NOT kick you when you go behind it, and to desensitize it because once you take ownership of that horse, everything he does is because of you. If your horse kicks out when people walk behind him, and you own that horse, then it's your fault because you didn't teach him to not do that. I'm not sure if this addresses your comment :P
+Think Like A Horse I'm having this problem with my leading with the horse that I'm leasing from time to time, but I don't really know how to get the things that I'm doing wrong to do it right. I've tried to step in front of her, and making her move back a few steps and there she just walks faster by me and cuts me off anyway and I don't really have any other ways to correct this and I suck at ground work btw or then she just thinks she's higher and I suck at correcting that (also I don't really understand how people make it look so easy, I'm from Finland and here I'm pretty sure only my friends know the term ground work). She also has this 'habbit' of just following people around and just going to their side and kinda cutting them off by pushing her side a bit in front of the person and stopping there, not turning to look at the person or anything. She's also a bit pushy sometimes (I just think she's being nice by letting me make her move and stuff and when she just is like hey I know there's hay a few steps forward let me just push past you and even tho I try so hard to just stay still and not give in and make her move a little back she just doesn't give two shits, I can just imagine what she's thinking at that moment) I'm sorry for the long story but could I get any tips? Btw love your videos and I've dreamed since I found your channel that one day I could get my own foal and train it the way you have trained your horses they are just amazing every time you handle them and your videos made me kinda anti-bit person so thanks for that also. Yeah Imma just stop this letter and hope you wanna waist your time reading it. Smokey is also super cute, yeah bye.
Coming here to leave a comment and to just go back to some old videos of yours. I always notice equestrians using the halter instead of their body. If the horse moves in front of them, they'll lose no time to start yankin'. A horse learns from release, and that sort of thing kind of finalized in my brain yesterday when I was thinking about the other people at my old barn who would slap horses. For one, the horses were put into corners of stalls where they couldn't escape if a person blocked their other side. One horse bites because it's saying "get out of my face," and in response it gets slapped. Was that release? No! Not at all. And for the scared folk out there, they'll probably back up (releasing pressure) when a horse goes to bite. Crazy how oblivious those barn people are, or I should say barn witches. (mainly womennnnnnn!) There are women older than me, and I'm 14, who still wont take the time to learn and take actual horsey advice that benefits the horse. You're right, Rick, people wont do something if it takes more time and effort, they always want the easy way out. I like your channel cause it gives me a place where I can rant n stuff without normal people crying in my face. I say normal because we're the crazy ones to them.
if you get a chance can look at this video byp trailride it is a 22 min video. seeing how people really are where is the horsemanship. maybe you could do a short video about your thoughts on that so people know what is right and wrong thx
So how would you stop him from crossing in front of you and trying to turn you around? I had mine do this and I kept cutting off her driveline but each time I did she walked faster to get in front of me. Finally I let her off the lead and she took off like a bat out of hell...which taught her that she can do that an I will cut her loose but I didn't know what to do.
Nicole C For any step they take forward they shouldn't, make them take two backwards. And before leading a horse at all, teach horse to stay outta your space by backing them up as you face them...then you walk to the end of the lead line (without pulling... and they "stay put") if that makes sense.
I know this video is really old but with my horse, he won't come out field. He won't move and just plants his feet. I've tried being calm and I've tried whipping him. Nothing works. He's very headstrong. I'm not sure what to do. Any suggestions
@ThinkLikeAHorse .....has there ever been a reported incident of a horse accidentally eating a plant's seed that has spikes on it? In this senario is it easy for the horse to remove the spike-ball off of his pricked tongue or should a human pull it out. (~How should I know, I don't eat wild grass lol. But I do know what those seeds feel like) Accidents happen.. {Plus: it there was a tinnie tiny cut on the horse's tongue should one leave it to heal on it's own since it's so minor, or consider putting oatment on it? In other words how sensitive are horses to infection.. when humans get a cut on their leg from soccer, it stings, but it won't cause a serious infection at all, ...of course not unless if you get mud on it, then micro-worms (parasites) would enter your body} :/
Rania Z im no complety sure on the plants but if the plantshave spikes the horse is unlikely to eat it unless it has overgrown the Pasteur if its a minor cut to the toung i will say leave it alone. as for a cut to the feet or anything its hest to apply a bit of medecin to prevent infection cause remember we humans dont really deal with flies buzzing around a horse dose and mud on animals is acutlly helpful ive seen animals roll an injury in mud cause it keeps flies off. pretty much if its nothing serious leave it alone maybe apply a bit of medecin so it heals quicker
There's a video about their past, i'm not sure if it fully answers your question. The name of the video is: 'The Story of Mr.T, Tanner & Buddy - How They ended up as Think like a Horse'!
Hi Rick Tanner is such a beautiful horse as well as Buddy T : well he is talking to youtubies Not take Bf any decisions that’s it ... I’m eating allez Hop B : nobody cares about me ... fine I do what I want ...I ll go find butterfly 🦋 big baby 😘😘
Is that t the little mustang. They love you like dad way jc Netherlands with lord admiral. Horse talk means let’s play grandpa so beautiful lord admiral went on to hunt jump. He loves your guts out. If that was ant ranger he could turn taaila md kick you.im no barn witch I rode the horse in hello dollywithnitntakes a woman watch it. I spent my life on horseback I absotelt love horses. I have an affinity with them those horse love you watch Barry Hook productions and Patrick Kaye horseman ship . Thehos 2 love you. You should do rescue and open a huge public riding livery. Ps Cy.
I love that these old videos is still here to be watched ❤️
Rick makes a lot of great points horses are like children they want direction and if they don't have clear direction their behavior reflects that.
Especially children adopted later in life from an orphanage who have had to feel like they can only survive on their own - they also have a "fight or flight" instinct.
Tanner is so handsome, you have so many great memories of him. RIP Mr T.
Sadly, many people think they don't have anything to learn when it comes to being around their horses, many of whom have had horses all their life, and compete at a high level . One I met just said "I haven't got time for all that, I have 10 horses to ride every day" They need to watch this!

Mr. T looked so awesome
I love Mr. T's mane! also like how you say that these behaviors are just a horse being a horse... nothing more, nothing less.
i dont have or been around horses but its interesting getting inside a horses head with you!
This video was excellent, 👍
Glad you enjoyed it!
Im not type A personality... but you are really helping me understand my horse....im always trying out your videos on my horse.
Don't try...........do.
I love all the grass.........great environment for those horses...........
Beautiful Mustang!
I must be real lucky with my horse. I have never had a problem leading him. We understand each other, and our personalities seem to compliment each other. He is not just a horse. He is my friend.
Make sure you are the fair and trusted leader in the horse's mind.
Good video, however I wish you had shown exactly what to do when a horse starts to try to get in front of you, and how you let him know that you are the lead horse. Thank you for all the time you take out of your day to make these videos.

+Eadie Camp you welcome!
I love your TH-cam channel! Intelligent advice about horse behavior. Hey the background location looks like California NorthState.

She will 'tell' you when you are doing something right or wrong.
I love every your films, and thanks that you do these 👍❤️
Good old Mr.T. he was such a handsome guy!!
Hi Rick..Big fan!
Rick I laughed SO hard when you said "he's not trying to kill me". That took me out 😂
Tanner just gorgeous ❤️ buddy adorable 🥰
4/17/23 Absolutely love ❤❤❤❤❤
You should buy a Go Pro ,just a suggestion
T’s eyes sure lit up when you said cookie also.😃
Its that simple isnt it....be clear on what you want from them :-) I am learning that now, I am the leader.
Interesting point be a Type A if you have a horse. Type A assertive, not aggressive. People who try to control with aggression get no respect.
I like this guys approach. Good stuff. I`ve had some butt head horses but later found out I was setting them up to act that way. Either you take the leadership position or they will. When you own a Clydesdale draft horse you definitely want the leadership spot. Great video.

Not viewing you as the leader. Learn the ground work. Watch the basics of ground work by Warwick Schiller.
Thk you
@WestCoastSi see his video "What is a Mustang Horse"
I love no matters what going on a good patch of gras is always viable and welcome.
Dying to know what are the marks by Tanners mane?

What breed of horse is T? I LOVE YOUR VIDEDS!!!!
Mr. T is a mustang Buddy is a quarter horse.
Hey Rick , When My horse Charlie relaxes his back leg (alternating almost every 30 second) Is that normal? My other horse only rest one leg.
some horses do both other favor one could be normal or could not be, I don't know horse and have not observed him enough to say for sure.
It depends.

You can also play "hide the hiney" parelli exercise.... it's super easy and could b quite helpful also...
Was wondering what your word is on Nipbuster for biting?
Mr t could probably run like the wind did you know seabisquit wa some part mustang?
I know this video is really old but with my horse, he won't come out field. He won't move and just plants his feet. I've tried being calm and I've tried whipping him. Nothing works. He's very headstrong. I'm not sure what to do. Any suggestions
Maybe because you keep him locked up to much.

this is good.
What is that mark on Mr. T’s neck?
It's his wild mustang mark. When people catch wild mustang they mark them with that Mark to show people that there wild mustangs
so...how long have you had them? obviously at least 7 years haha
There's a video about their past, i'm not sure if it fully answers your question. The name of the video is: 'The Story of Mr.T, Tanner & Buddy - How They ended up as Think like a Horse'!
i like this .. esp when i work with race horses and they havnt been taught respect. good advice
Race horses............don't get me started..............
What breed is Tanner?
