- When a patient asks Dr Halstead to let him die. The situations becomes a case of ethics when Dr.Halstead finds that his patient is a pedophile.

Dr. Manning and Dr. Choi travel to a homeless camp to deliver the baby of one of the teenage residents who refuses to deliver at a hospital. Truebornseeker treatments and life saving procedures are two different things. Doctors are obliged to perform PCR. Once the person is stable, if he needs a surgery or a long term treatment, he can refuse it.

@@RobCod2012 Im sorry to hear that man. I hope the societal stigma disappears and real research is done to help people with it. I believe with proper therapy and possibly medications the disorder could be reduced, I just wish more people could see it that way.

There are some child molesters that aren't pedophiles. They are rare, but some do it out of spite, or just because that is "how they do it"

Not every child molester is a pedophile.
Coming from someone who was molested as a child, I think he was an honourable character. He resisted even though the temptation was THAT strong. He struggled and suffered with what I believe was his own mental illness. His wish to die was his punishment to himself. And it was granted. You don't always get the decent ones who know right and wrong and don't inflict pain for their own gain.
That's right, the difference is exactly that he hasn't DONE anything to any child. He knows what he desires is WRONG and has fought that desire from day one.
i understand that doctors are just following through but honestly if the patient wants to end it all, they are fully aware of their decision and thought through this, I’d say respect their choices.

Ana M I’ve acknowledged that but that’s in most states in America. I believe that it shouldn’t be illegal as long as the patient is stable and fully capable enough to understand the process of that stage then it should still follow through the process.
We also have to remember that most of these patients are in pain and can no longer bare it anymore. It’s sad but if that’s what they want, they should be respected for their own choices in life.
Ana M Something being illegal doesn’t make it ethically wrong. For some people life is pain. Physically or mentally or emotionally. And while we should be able to cure that, that’s not always the case. We say people who commit suicide are ‘selfish’ because they don’t think of who they harm in the process. But Isn’t it even more selfish to keep someone alive for your own benefit when they’re clearly in pain?
The thing is some patients are emotionally/mentally unstable to make those choices (depression, suicidal thoughts) and there been cases where people have hurt themselves or tried to die and survived and ended up regretting it. So it's a very complicated situation...

This man had what’s diagnosed as Paraphilia. Most of my clients with this sexual disorder resist their urges and are actually afraid of putting themselves in positions in which they may be exposed to the subjects of their arousal. Poor man, it is excruciating to live with such a disorder but very brave to resist its temptations.

Julie Duong then you shouldn’t have generalized, this is an emergency room and they are ER doctors, doctors are on their toes doing physical work just as much as the nurses in emergency rooms, along with that, they have to make the medical decisions. I’m tired of people feeling the need to discredit what doctors do just because they are attempting to uplift nurses. just appreciate the nurses and leave the doctors alone. That’s my point.

@I mug Technically, there are brain surgeries, yes. However, due to our current medical advancement (or in this context, lack of), it's not possible to /just/ cancel out the hormonal center to lose any kind of attraction. You would also damage a lot of other hormonal balances in your body that you need to... e.g. produce endormorphines or even melatonin which could result in him becoming a severely depressed person unable to feel happiness naturally for the rest of his life or rob him of restful sleep for the rest of his life.
But it's good thinking and hopefully - especially for the sake of people being born with this mental condition - it will be a possibility in the future. To have these urges and knowing that they are wrong... I feel sorry for them.

I nursed my elderly mother through rampant cancer, she just wanted to go, but the ridiculous laws that deny people the right to choose to die meant she had to suffer.
This. I did psych nursing at uni and id met many patients with horrific illnesses, including dementia. This lady when she had capacity had expressed wishes for her death when the dementia is so far gone but because of the laws she couldnt pass beforehand or afterwards. She couldnt use the loo, had a bedpan. She couldnt speak. She couldnt enjoy anything. She was nearing the end of life when i met her and it was so sad to see that (in the nurses who'd known her for years words) she had lost her dignity and everything that made her her and was just existing because she had to. Very sad indeed. My deepest condolences to you, kind stranger.
I respect this man. To defy an urge that is physically hardwired into your brain must take extreme amounts of willpower. In the end he was a good man.

As someone who has been attacked... I have nothing but sympathy for those cursed by cruel fate with this disease, and I want nothing more than for them to get all the help and care in the world they need. Now that all goes out the window the moment they hurt someone, but until that time, they deserve help and should be treated like any other patient suffering a neurological disease.

@ayolovephat I am afraid that is simply incorrect. If spirituality helps, then that is great, but there are physical symptoms that go along with this disorder, chemical changes in the brain that create this affliction. This isn't an illness than most can simply wish away.

@@DiamondAviator4 Because in ethics there is no right or wrong. There are opinions and it only matters how well you justify yours. The doctor (Halstead) obviously felt conflicted about letting that man die. He says that it's not his job to judge people, his job is to treat people regardless of their gender, race, sexual orientation etc. Watching someone die when you know for a fact that you could treat them is one of the hardest things to go through as a health care worker.
The courage and bravery of this man should be applauded. H really chose cancer over his urges. That alone should be enough to show how good of a man he really is.
He’s a good person. He can’t control his thoughts, but he resisted his urges and didn’t act on his bad thoughts.
If he wants to die and he is aware of his decision than just let him go....

While I admire Will's compassion, the fact that he dismisses every opinion that he doesn't share is annoying and selfish. I do like how he was there for him and held his hand at the end though.
I also understand that hearing the term pedophile makes you think of a monster, but I didn't feel like that with this man. It's the ones that act on it that should suffer. The strength this guy had to hold himself back because he knew it was wrong is admirable. Not saying he his a hero or anything, just that he did the right thing and should get a pat on the back.
That’s true. I’ve worked as an RN for the last few years, and I’ve worked alongside patients with psychiatric disorders as well, what people don’t understand is that pedophilia is an affliction, whereas child molestation is a crime.
Well there is no "right: or "wrong" in ethics. Only opinions and it matters how we justify them. Halstead seemed conflicted about letting that man die. As a health care worker myself, i feel for him in that situation. It's hard letting people go, watching them die. Especially when you know for a fact that there are treatments available.

I truly do believe that a person is entitled to an honorable and dignified exit in life. Provided that he is of sound mind and a psych has taken a look on him. The decision should ultimately be his.

Many people struggle with these sorts of thoughts, they think the best way to stop those urges, and keep everyone around them safe, is to end it all. Many struggle in silence about this because there's so much stigma around it, yet, it's just thoughts and urges, they don't act on. And we need to expand to more studies in this field because it could stop so many others from acting on those urges.
Kudos to the patient for living and dying with integrity. Shame on some of the doctors for not knowing what it is they are dealing with. Dr Charles got it right

I agree with you. But it's still disturbing to many humans. Sometimes, acceptance of illness and death is such a victory for the person that is sick. It's a gut feeling. And it is a proof of existential intelligence. Just as following a treatment can be !

I am from a country where Euthanasia has been legal for years. I honestly don't even know any better. Just like with abortion and gay marriage, we have always been at the forefront of these issues.
I think I speak for most people in my country when I say that Euthanasia is a version of freedom of choice. You have to understand, we are a medically advanced country where everything is insured (still sorry about that America) and we are aging too much. We have too many old people to provide for our economy. So from a purely economical view point, Euthanasia is also a way to help our numbers.
Than we have the ethical issue. Euthanasia is NOT like suicide. Suicide implies that life can definitely get better. That you feel hopeless, but are not in a necessarily hopeless situation. Euthanasia is only for the hopeless cases. For people who will never get better and who want to die on their own terms. It is seen as strength, bravery.

Yes, but in america it is their legal obligation to help them live, if thry let him die when they see him as mentally incompetant in his judgement or depressed its a crime. The fact he let him die was a crime, but an ethical one. Hope this helps :)

I strongly disagree with keeping someone alive against their will when they are declared legally competent to make that choice.
I have so much respect for someone who knows they have a problem and gets help before they do something horrible. I hope it becomes more common for these people to be able to access help before they hurt a child

True, on The good doctor, a dude named George was desperate to not harm anyone.
This is something that in my country (netherlands) is allowed, but not easy. The patient must be complete aware, 100% certain, and sign... something. And a bunch of other legal stuff, only then is a doctor allowed to inject a lethal injection.
I think this goes to show that people aren't good based on their thoughts, but their actions. This poor man was stricken with horrible thoughts that he was clearly disgusted by, and even though all of his mind was urging him to act on them he never did. I'm not saying he's necessarily a good man, but one worthy of respect.
That's wrong, no one can tell you that you can't die. If he wants to die, it doesn't matter if he is a pedophile or not. Each person has the right to decide if they want to end their life.

The logic of this always escapes me. Being obsessed with keeping a person alive against their will no matter the circumstance. I can understand some circumstances but someone who knows they are going to die, or someone who knows they present a danger to themselves and others, and all we can think about is forcing them to remain alive against their will.
That was soo sad too watch. He could only die to heal ….
