- It's a tough one for Dr. Manning, her 8-year-old cancer patient refuses to take his medication.
Season 02, Episode 13:
Dr. Rhodes (Colin Donnell) convinces Dr. Latham (guest star Ato Essandoh) to join him for a medical trip out of town, which puts Latham's personality issues to the test. Dr. Manning (Torrey DeVitto) treats an 8 year-old cancer patient who wants to give up on his battle until she makes a surprise discovery. Elsewhere, an unhealthy woman with heart problems is brought in and doesn't want to listen to doctors, much to the dismay of Dr. Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss). Meanwhile, Dr. Choi (Brian Tee), Dr. Charles (Oliver Platt) and Dr. Reese (Rachel DiPillo) work on a complicated case involving a woman with a personality disorder. A 8 year old who's been experiencing pain and the verge of death for years he doesn't understand what death is.
Well a child with a dead relative definitely could still not actually understand death but I have no trouble believing an 8 year old dying from cancer who has gone through several treatments that made him ill and feel completely defeated has an understanding of death and when that torment is just too much to go through anymore, also with the dead Mum.
A dying child who has been going through treatment the majority of their life and have probably seen friends from the hospital die on multiple occasions.
ya mean while irl atm doctors can give a kid the choice to get mutilated for how they feel for a couple days but not to refuse treatment that makes them un happy and sick

She didnt really, both were so condesending and judge him, he just didnt want to see his son in pain, worst of it all is that she tried to explain death, to a child that has cancer for many years, lost a parent and its not hers! Thats not her call, the kid fully understood his situation, and the legal guardian did what he thought was best.

And another fact that the boy is still a kid, i would also think that he didnt understand death as much as i did because many of the other child cancer patients dont understand death even tho they experienced the pain. its like admitting that a baby knows more than you. she changed her mind after hearing what the boy said, she is already much better than other doctors as they dont listen at all

Honestly, I would've been mad as hell if I was the dad. The fact that the father's decision actually helped his son survive, just to be arrested for it is frustrating. If they actually waited a little, the father could've been by his son's side while he was recovering and now he can't get that.

honestly, it's not fair, the father obviously didn't wanna lose his son but he wasn't gonna make him suffer just so he would live, that would be selfish, and he got arrested for being a considerate father who actually listens to his child, which most parents DON'T actually do. This is not neglect, this is parenting. As a parent you have to make tough decisions and that's exactly what he did.

@@angelinemaria4936 They told us he has cancer, but they didn't specify what type of cancer. Furthermore, those that affect children are generally more aggressive and spread faster .... (I'm not a doctor but that's what I've heard from real doctors), unfortunately it's a terrible reality for an adult to live, let alone a child.

2:37 the father's decision does make sense. I mean, they tried 4 chemos and they all failed. How can they be sure this one is going to work ? There's a difference between hope and denial. What the doctors are doing is denial.
That's something I find weird about the whole medical consent thing. In my country at 16 you are able to make your own medical decisions, someone younger can seek contraception or abortion without parents knowing, but if a child under 16 tells a parent they don't want any more treatment the parent will find themselves in court losing the right to make medical decisions and the child will be forced to take treatment.

Dr Manning was wrong, it is the kid’s choice and it is the kid’s body, the kid understands what cancer is and what it’s like going through it, he made his choice and it is his decision and his father supports him with his decision because he knows that his son doesn’t want to suffer with cancer anymore

I agree, in my opinion if you haven’t experienced cancer and the treatments, DO NOT try to force that person to keep going through pain and suffering just so you can feel heroic. I don’t like dr.manning because she constantly thinks she’s right, and she doesn’t even admit to her wrong decisions until there’s solid proof and most of the time she does even apologise just gets all pissy😭

So if a baby has cancer and can’t talk they can’t do chemo bc they can’t make a decision? The parents make their choices till their officially either teens or adults so either 13 or 18
I just don’t understand, not causing your child more pain and respecting his wishes is a crime, but making your child suffer so much just so that you could keep him alive or creating a child with the sole purpose of making him donate organs hence suffering isn’t.

A child that has cancer, and has been through hell and back through chemo, and Dr Manning has the audacity to say he doesn't understand?! I think the only person who doesn't understand is Manning, she hasn't been through it, and some ppl would rather die or wait it out than go through tiresome treatment.
Dr Manning is so condesending, self rightous and arrogant. Assuming a cancer paitent who has been sick for years doesnt know what death means because they are a child, immediately verbally attacking a parent and accusing them of withholding medication without asking questions (and doing so within the child's hearing) and acting like only people who parent like her or subscribe to her belief system are worthy of respect. Yh she's really annoying. As soon as there is a patient who has a kid or a baby she acts like she raised 10 kids in 5 life times and knows it all, and as soon as no one agrees with her she gets emotional and starts acting irrational to i really don't like her.
To be fair, a lot of children cannot fully grasp the idea of death, so if anything, she was trying to help the kid, which she did try to. The problem was she assumed she was right, and the dad was wrong.
@@SegularRpork A lot of children, sure. But not a cancer paitent who has been sick for several years and is steadily getting worse, and whose mother died when they were a baby. To ask them if they understand that death isnt like a video game where you can reload is patronising and dismissive, given how long he had been ill and his family circumstances. One of the best ways to build a wall between you and a child is to treat them like they dont understand, or be condesending- they really resent it and will start dismissing you if the treatment continues. And yeah, she always assumes she's right which is a major failing in medicine, especially in an ER. Thankfully she isnt a real doctor!

I feel for this little guy, I don’t know what it’s like to have cancer but I do have chronic pain. I’ve been in pain since I was so young. You contemplate life and death when you’re in so much pain for so long. Even at a young age. He definitely knows what he wants and it should definitely be honoured.
I hate how dr manning cannot see that by forcing a child to go through chemotherapy that isnt even working is very traumatic for the child and parent. How she simply neglects how the child feels and instead believes what SHE THINKS HE FEELS, regardless of what hes actually experiencing. She's not the one going through it, she cannot force the child into chemo. Life is cruel sometimes, maybe the child wont survive, as heartbreaking as that is, she cannot legally (at least where i'm from) force the family to go through with chemo if they've clearly talked it through and decided themselves.

Sometimes i feel like doctor manning (no clue about the spelling) her character isn’t fit for a doctor. while she is good at her work, she lets her emotions take control of her actions too many times in the course of the show.
She's fit to be a doctor in the ficitional world of Chicago Med. You should know that these shows increase the overal emotional drama to an unrealistic point.
Dr manning should not invalidate the kid's pain. Pain is subjective. 🥺 patients understand that doctors wanna save lives but sometimes pain itself is really too much to handle. 😢

Doctor Manning instantly accepted that she was wrong but April REPEATEDLY chooses life over suffering. She’s against abortion even in the best interests of the mother. I can’t stand her
Know it all, judgmental lady. I know they are placing her in a position to be liked, but she always gets on my nerves. So self righteous, acting like being a doctor and a mother allows her to decide how others feels.
They almost tore a whole family apart because they let their emotions get the better of them. And to think that they are laughing about it afterwards? Honestly, the writing is great to show the shitty behaviours of some of these doctors. It enrages me that they didn't respect the father and the child's choices. It pisses me off that they got child protective services involved as well, they only called because they weren't getting their way with the patient.
Well, they do have legal obligations to follow the law. They don’t get to pick and choose which laws to follow.
What sucks is that the law says this father is inadequate, so what potentially happens to the kid? They dump him in a group home and force him to undergo the chemo without any support - the staff at the group home sure don’t have the resources to devote time to one kid!
Or if he got placed in foster care the foster parents would obviously give some form of individual support, but the chances of anyone taking on a dying kid like that are very slim!
So he dies all alone whilst the father is in jail for having the nerve to care about his son!
That’s how it would play out - although the kid’s cancer improving because dad withheld medication puts a different spin on things. He’ll still go to a group home but he might not die.
It was probably hard for the dad to hear that his son has givin up😢 but I am proud of him that he respects his wishes

IRL, no matter who you are, you would have been arrested. Chemo is the medicine to help to improve the cancer. It would be the right thing to try to do anything to save that child's life no matter the circumstances. So for this situation, though i did not like the decision, it was the best thing tk do.

It is soo easy to judge what the 'right' and 'wrong' thing to do from an outside perspective. But unless you are living with this situation, it is hard to say how you will react.
It is easy to judge the father for not forcing the child to take the medication which is a double edge sword, because it is essentially poisoning the boy to try and make him better. But to live knowing you are forcing your child through pain and suffering with little result, while your child is begging you to stop and let their pain end. it must be hard.
Also if the kid didn't want to take the oral pills, how was the father going to force him? prize open his jaws and force the pill down his throat?

I hate it when doctors say that kids don't understand things! Usually they don't, but when you've been sick for so long the pain, suffering, fear make you grow up quicker and understand things better. Being closer to death makes you understand it. You start acting like an adult even if you don't want to because you start worrying like one. Belive me, I speak from experience.

NGL I don’t blame Manning as much as I blame April. April made the final call and told her she would call if Manning didn’t. Manning wanted to hold off, and ended up fighting for the dad in the end.
Agreed, Manning was on her usual moral high-horse whereas April was just back stabbing considering they hadn't even gotten results in yet.
Realistically that would severely hammer any kind of prosecution on the dad out of existence and instead put at least April in court for gross negligence. Manning would've gone under long ago but here she was overstepping her medical oath by giving emotional responses.
So glad I can go watch full thing on Netflix and not spend 20 minutes searching for the next part :)

In that other episode where a mother gets pregnant solely to use the baby as a donor for her 8 year old daughter with leukemia, Dr Manning literally encourages the daughter to go against what her parents are doing for her but over here the 8 year old boy's brain is too "underdeveloped" to understand the concepts of life and death?
And in another episode Dr Halstead gets tired of Manning constantly disregarding his suggestions and opinions and always doing any procedure that is suitable in her opinion; he literally asks her as to why she keeps on taking control of such situations, and she literally ignores the question😂😂
And the same trend is also seen between the nurse and Dr Choi in future episodes 😂
It seems that in this universe maternal instinct is always more effective than pure fact😂
This is something, that should be a childs decision, not parents, not the doctors... whether you want to live or not is not somebodyelse's decision... it's not like vaccination, that is actually a necessity to ensure the child can survive until adulthood... but if somebody is really sick and in pains, they should have a choice

By 8 years olds a child does understand those concepts, unless they're mentally disabled or just haven't been taught. 6 years + is the average, and some know sooner or later. The concept that the kid doesn't understand is ridiculous and ignorant.
Once she spoke to the kid, Dr. Manning should realize she was wrong and that the child very clearly understood.

He's a confused and scared adult, and her job is to inform and support, ONLY. Doctors can NEVER tell a patient, much less a CHILD that they HAVE TO fight their cancer. If they fully understood it, why would parents tell...I don't know, a 5-year-old whose greatgrandmother died "She is in Heaven", "She is with your greatgrandad now" and things like that and not straight out that "She died"? And 8-year-olds can't fully understand what dying means and what happens after it either.

I don't remember what the cases name was but In Canada there was a huge case regarding a native American family take their daughter out of chemotherapy and make her survive through natural native American methods...
The parents got a lot of Backlash and a case against them etc ... And i remember Dr.Abla who was my oncologist when i was younger... Was the same doctor of of that native American girl .....
And Dr. Abla actually came out and said that girl would have Lasted maybe 1-2 yrs with the chemotherapy but 2 yrs would be full of pain ....
Whereas, when the parents took her off chemotherapy she only survived 9 months but a much mord painless 9 months she could spend in her own freedom rather than being confined in 4 walls of hospital and suffering in pain just to last a maybe a few yrs ...
It's quality of quantity...
At that point her parents wanted her to live whatever life she has left with a quality live and rather than extending the quantity of years she lives only to decrease the quality of her life....
It's amazing how context shows everything, her parents really just wanted a last hurrah for their little girl to die in peace and without pain.
I can see article headlines though mangling that to make a *very* different story.

I’m on the fathers side with this one actually. I personally don’t believe in choosing whether we live or die, but at the same time why would you knowingly put yourself through awful suffering when it may not even be helpful in the end, and if the person begs you to stop repeatedly then you’ve got to at least take that into consideration. Otherwise it makes you selfish because you’re putting their quality of life after your own wishes of having them there even though they are going through so much. And don’t want to. It doesn’t matter if he’s a child. I think people would only fully understand the implications and horror if they have been through something like that themselves, otherwise they can just spout opinions that don’t even make sense. Including Dr Manning in this clip. I can only imagine the horrible horrible pain it must’ve caused the father, just thinking about something like that happening with my loved ones and how hard it would be for me to just give up and how much I would want to carry on even if they didn’t want to. But a strong person would listen to their loved ones even if it killed them. Which of course it would.

The idea that an eight year old is incapable of understanding death is just more of the same bullshit. Children are not idiots, sure they don't often have the context of experience but I would have expected her to try and explain this to a five year old but an eight year old, especially a cancer patient of so many years, would be terrifyingly intimate with the idea of death and has his own opinions on what he wants. Opinions his father understood.

It honestly ticks me off that some adults do think like this as if children are dumb and unable to understand things especially at 8 but children mature at different rates and especially for those suffering through chronic illness the children understand more then what adults think they do
Respect for the kid and the dad
The dad is not wrong. This kid doesn't want to suffer anymore. There are times when cancers resurface again after treatment. The patient has to go through hell twice. If the dad truly wanted his son dead he wouldn't rush him to the hospital.

My sister had a 4 stage cancer at the beginning of COVID pandemic. Travel pan was in place, no inter-state travel was restricted and the only treatment can be done was locally.
It was horrible. we were scared to the max. sometime I wanted to give up but we kept moving. we tried to keep her as positive as we can. We didn't visit anybody during her treatment and we lost grandma without seeing her for more than a year.
Thankfully she is cancer free. What am trying to say no matter how painful the experience is there is always a light at the end of the tunnel
But by the end of the day, it's the person's decision whether keep on fighting or to put an end to their suffering. Everyone has their own way when dealing with pain

Because he was willing to withhold the medication which is meant to keep him from dying. IRL, thats child neglect, so yes, i understand their decision, though i did not like it.

Whilst being fully aware that some decisions cannot be made by young children, one thing that has constantly surprised me at every stage of development, is just how surprisingly capable kids can be if you actually allow them some control over things. Age appropriate of course. So to tell a young kid with a dead mom and who's been through the medical wringer, that he doesn't understand life and death and consequences - that's one I may be tempted to let the kid choose too, if my family was in that situation 😢

this is so sad because in our eyes his life had only just started - but he was suffering so much.

I’m glad this is fictional because it’s so wrong to impose a medical decision even though the child already decided on another one. Unless it’s clear someone else manipulated the child into dying, everyone should follow their wishes.

I would have respect the wishes of the child and letting him go. People are so stupid thinking dying is bad , they just want people to keep on suffering so they can feel better about their own fear of dying. They purposely let people they claim to love suffer more and longer and not even listening to them when they want to die. That is wrong
While in a way, I do agree with you, I can't say dying is a good thing.
My baby daughter died, and I can't say it's a good thing and I'm happy about it.
I do believe she is in Heaven and not hurting anymore, but I'm still not happy Emily is not here with me.

that nurse though😡 moral lesson was, just.don't speak too soon. the father wasn't a bad person.he chose to respect his child's descision and it turned out to be the right one. but no, the doctor spoke this and that.then that nurse reported asap. WOW
