Changing the loading chime is the arguably most criminal move here let's be honest. That dooot-doot-doot-doot... deeet-deeet-deet-deet- broooop was iconic
upscaled quality increase: 2-5% upscale size increase: 2000% Aspyr: a job well done - in fact, we even cut more content to make space for our upscaled textures, enjoy
How many times do I have to say it? ITS NOT ASPYR THATS THE PROBLEM. ITS SONY!!!!!! You morons dont realize that LucasArts, and the developers who teamed up with them in the 90s/early 2000s were VERY much infantile. Aspyr downsized because Sony stopped their remastered version of KOTOR halfway through, due to it not being "cinematic" enough.
Nah the originals on Xbox had Jaba the hutt for both games and still were only a combined 7 gigs. No excuse to multiply that by a factor of 10 for zero added content.
If you want to play battlefront 2, PLEASE consider playing the battlefront 2 remastered mod. It has new models, textures and fixes the buggy menu of the PC version, and it's way cheaper, has an active playerbase, and also it doesn't need a 60GB download lol
What even more crazy is they were the ones behind the kotor 1 remake - F - and kotor 2 on the switch - that never got the cut content that were promise, double F - They have ported other star games & games like tomb raider to better success, but why does those top 3 have to suffer
@@lulukomadori9651Apparently they tried to add the content without permission so they ran into legal issues i don't understand how a company could be that dumb
@@mysticwraith6667 but they literally advertise it before release, they should of know before announcing it, no doubt people got tricked buying it before the news
I hate when remasters change things for the worst. Another example is the remaster of Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles remaking the intro song when you start a new game. I find the original one sounds better, and I don’t like that there’s no option for the original Game Cube music. At least I can turn off the voice acting.
Afaik its not really "changed" Its just slowed and you can even see in his comparison is a chunk slower. Using a framecounter you can actually see the OG loading screen is 30fps but the new one is oddly locked to 20fps which makes me think its not intentional and will be an easy fix for them
@@CaptainFordo21 I hate how they do that. they don't even bother to find the original game they just take the Steam Version and upscale it. It was the same deal with GTA Vice City. The original CD/Playstation/XBOX version had rain reflections and music that was removed in the Steam versions and re-releases.
@@ThatGuyNamedRicklicensing issues is a thing when it comes to music in video games for an example GTA vice city stories won’t be rereleased because of Phil Colin’s music licensing ran out and rockstar is too lazy to do anything about it
Ikr. One of my favorite things about that map. Used to love doing strafeing runs and racking up kills. Now I can’t even stand the starfighters sine you can’t un invert them
the only good thing about this "collection" is that it made me appreciate the originals and the time they came out a lot more. man, how i miss the 2000s...
Most of the time when people say they miss how things used to be it's crap. In the case of gaming it's completely legit though. The advent of online updates and early access has utterly destroyed expectations in the gaming community. Promise a big idea, sell everyone something half finished with the promise of finishing it later, don't finish it. Profit.
Pretty sure the thicker lightsaber model was due to them including an uncredited stolen mod in the game at launch despite them swearing they wouldn't after being called out for it later. It was patched out shortly after the games launch making me think it was caught up in security approval.
Actually, 24 hours after your comment was posted, there is news now with proof that they actually DID keep some of the stolen mod content......I'm not even mad anymore, I'm just disappointed & confused. I want justice or redemption. This million dollar company with a HUGE budget (especially for a remaster of a old 2005 game) has SOMEHOW failed and done wayyy worse than the modders who were very successful , the modders who did their work for FREE out of love for the game and being fans of star wars. I literally just do NOT understand HOW Aspyr could've done worse than the modders, modders added better high res textures, added the DLC equally as good (though this is because one of the OG developers gave the DLC files to a modder, so that's how modders got the EXACT DLC content perfectly modded into the game). Modders also did not add more bugs, infact some mods FIX the few bugs there was. Also the modders didn't make the games 60gb. The modders also added more content, more features, even just simple thing like being able to do clones vs stormtroopers, rebels vs droids, rebels vs clones, stormtroopers vs droids. Also adding the "Hero Assault" (Hero vs Hero mode) to all the other maps. Mods improving AI, also added splitscreen for 4+ players to PC etc. etc Modders also added new maps and stuff, in fact there is mod maps that you can *_FLY FROM GROUND TO SPACE_* and from SPACE TO GROUND. You can literally do ground battles and then space battles in the same game, the same map, just go hop into a ship and fly towards the sky until you hit space! I really do not see a reason to buy the classic collection other than online......but even then ONLINE is broken, & because of the controversy rn the player count is extremely low due to the bugs, high ping, lag etc. etc. That leaves the only reason to buy classic collection is for controller support to play sigleplayer.......BUT there is already problems & glitches with singleplayer and controllers on the classic collection with not being able to adjust controls and sensitivity properly. And BF2 on PC already has controller support that works well, especially with my Xbox 360 controllers. Steam has its own built in controller support, and if I'm too lazy to make my own button mapping, I can just copy the most popular button mapping for Bf2 in the steam controller menu. Then in BF2 I just enable joypad/controller in settings. Everything works good, and I can customize my controller settings however I want. It really sucks, I was sooo looking forward to this classic collection, just when I was getting bored with star wars & losing some hope they announced it and I was so excited, I felt a wave of nostalgia like the old days were back!.....then the release happened & reminded me the old days are over, that we still live in this new age of gaming where devs release broken games at launch & do the absolute bare minimum they can trying to maximize profits and or just do a blatant cash grab scam by hyping up the game with advertising knowing the game is crap but if the advertising is really good they will get a bunch of sales for the crap broken game. Honestly, if Aspyr does not fix this, they should be sued. Honestly Disney needs to step in & lay down the hammer on Aspyr for this. Disney the past year or two seems to be realizing their failures & is trying to fix that, they lost trust with the fans & lost their reputation, & this classic collection has only made it worse. Disney should step in & do something to Aspyr or hire someone else to help fix the game since they just took another MASSIVE blow to their reputation & trust - which they really can't afford to take losses on anymore. I genuinely just do not understand HOW they can mess up SO BADLY unless: 1. They did not do their due diligence & were negligent, OR 2. they saw this as a blatant scam cash grab opportunity by hyping the advertising knowing people would buy it no matter what with good advertising - basically a nostalgia bait trap. Those are the ONLY 2 explanations for a screw up this bad. Either way, they need to fix it or should face consequences - honestly both consequences & fixing it should be on the table. (PS. Sorry my comment is so long, but this list of problems with this remaster is soo long too. It just hurts to see a failure so bad with some you love & are passionate about.)
@@nicklibby3784 aspyr did exactly as disney hired them to do, and its all they have ever done. aspyr have been bastard scammers since day one. seems like everyone has completely forgotten now that aspyr were originally a modding team for kotor 1 making a graphical remaster of the game, completely new textures to make it look like a modern AAA game. but then after 2 years (and taking somewhere around 6 million from patreons and kickstarter) supposedly disney sent them a DMCA notice (which as a mod disney would have no legal recourse for, so i knew then they were scammers) and so they "backed down", apologizing saying "they have no choice but to back down and stop production on the remaster mod." two years go by and after the internet seemed almost scrubbed of the mod teams existence, they pop back up as a formal company under disney. at the time people who remembered them were excited thinking the remaster mod had gotten picked up as an official project, it did not, and none of the footage or images shown from that supposed remaster mod have ever resurfaced or been mentioned. i mean the supposed mod was almost done before getting shut down too, they had only korriban and rakata left to do, getting hired by disney and just finishing the mod to re-release the whole game as easy money seems like a no brainer.... but based on everything, that mod probably never existed in the first place, they had just scamed everyone as a job interview for Disney, who hired them to scam everyone.

That's what I'm saying. Places like Geonosis or Felucia are SUPPOSED to be hazy, foggy, and muddy. Being crisp and clear doesn't automatically make something better - there is a such thing as artistic intent.
Ah, the yesteryear artist feel for the common misconception that increasing the resolution of an existing texture means it's now that higher resolution. If you stretch a 240p texture to 4k, you just have a bigger 240p texture. You actually have to edit the textures.
It was the shit back in 2004/2005 It’s still good but it feels outdated EAs version is actually funnier to me now I think which I thought I’d never say
Both originals were free with gold and run perfectly on Xbox series S/X. They have auto HDR with edge enhancements and upscaling, as well as comes with all the DLC for both games, cheats, and exploits. There is zero reason to waste money and gigs on the new collection. If the lighting bothers you that much, increase the game brightness and backlight on your tv. Problem solved
ngl, the old blurry shit looked better even if it's at a lower resolution, since it looked like it was this towering Goliath of a structure in the distance, where even though your eyes can't quite adjust to it, you can still see it looming there. That might not have been the intent, but it's the illusion given. The remaster just looks too clean and it makes the backgrounds look like a wallpaper behind everyone.
yeah it looks like clip art otherwise. there's no sense of depth, looks edited in, etc... 2D backgrounds have to be somewhat blurry and messy to add that sense of depth and distance. how can someone make that mistake in 2024?
Some of it, like the Naboo Plains waterfalls are *intentionally* blurred. It's akin to a DOF (depth of field effect), before tech was advanced enough to do that. Sharpening the blurred waterfall doesn't make any sense. It just looks like a white line. Geonosis is supposed to be somewhat hazy. In the movie, there was a massive dust storm they were shooting through where they couldn't see more than a few meters ahead. Obviously the PC version is nicer, and it makes sense to use that as a base, but there's nothing wrong with the console version.
@@cralo2569 Because ASPYR didn't put much thought or effort into this. They spent most of their time and effort on the Tomb Raider remaster, and were crunched for time apparently to get this re-release that nobody asked for out the door by an entirely arbitrary deadline of their choosing.
Thank you flandrew for doing this detailed breakdown, i was looking forward to buying the classic collection and held off, so knowing the differences between the two is very helpful
I'm a UI autist and the thing that ABSOLUTELY KILLS ME is the fonts that you see on enemy unit names stock and ammo counters. Nobody's talking about this. They replaced BF1's nice in universe font, and BF2's iconic stylized blocky font, with the most bland, MS word document ahh sans serif font they could find. You can also notice they didn't even bother adjusting the Y position of BF2's toast bar as seen at the bottom of the screen at 4:07. LOOK AT THAT DISGRACE! Its nice that they fixed the resolution scaling issues, like you can see on the originals with high resolution the fonts and UI elements became insanely tiny. But yeah the colateral damage of obliterating the fonts in this fix is criminal.
@@picclejar yup the old steam BF2 is also a horrendous mess, and that's why i was so hopeful that this release could swoop by and fix everything nope...
@@picclejar What do you mean the font is lost? Even if it was somehow lost, they could extract it from the original ports and rework it into the remaster. That doesn’t make much sense.
No splitscreen, multiplayer, and the file size is 8 times larger. That tells me everything I need to know about this game. Seems like all they did was upscale the textures with ai, and they didn't even bother cleaning the artifacts left behind.
It wouldn't be surprising if that is all they have done. Just used AI to upscale everything and brought the servers back from 2005 for the multi-player and called it a day. Then, bank on nostalgia to sell copies
You nailed it. I was so disappointed when I booted it up and realized they sold me a worse version of two games I already own for more than double what I paid. It was done so poorly, it felt like a bad joke. Needless to say, I'm back playing the originals and I got a refund.
@@richard45359 "Original Xbox version" You do know the PS2 version is also the "original" version right? lol. PS2 I believe only supported up to 2 controllers natively while original Xbox had 4. I believe PS2 also had a smaller amount of players per match as they used GameSpy servers while Xbox uses Microsoft servers. So PS2 only had I think 16 player Multiplayer while Xbox had 32, at least for BF1. Forgot if it was the same for BF2.
Thank you for doing a comparison featuring the XBOX ports running on modern hardware. As I own both Battlefront 1 and 2 on my Series S, this video has solidified my decision to only purchase the Classic Collection if Aspyr fixes the multiplayer quickly enough to ensure a healthy player count. Sadly, given Aspyr's track record of broken promises (KOTOR 2 on Switch) I doubt this will ever happen. Also, 4 player split-screen was where it was at back in the day - sad to see it missing!
Its definitely odd theres no 4 players as Xbox had it. PS2 was the only one limited to 2 player splitscreen considering the console only natively supported 2 players (requires Multitap for 4).
At 1:20 i actually like the original background better. It makes it look somewhat farther away and actually part of a 3D environment, whereas the new one may be better graphics, but it looks like a 2D drawing just plastered into a physical "movie-set" wall.
Riddle me this, in the era of screens three times bigger than crt tvs, Why is split screen not in modern games? I understand that a majority of players are on separate consoles but what of families with one system wanting to play something together? The fact these tiny little tvs manage to have games with 4 different people while we only have one massive screen for one person to play on now.
In one word: Greed. They want families to have to buy the following for each person in the household in order to play together: a separate copy of the same game, a console, and a subscription to Xbox Live or PSN. It's a rough time we live in, in regards to co-op gaming. We have this awesome tech that a lot of us couldn't even conceive of as children and it's all weighed down by greed (the likes of which most of us also couldn't conceive of). But yeah, I have fond memories split-screen gaming with my dad and a couple of friends who occasionally visited when growing up. I feel for friends and parents who want to play video games together with their kids and are severely hampered in their ability to do so because of things like this. Major props to the few developers/companies out there who still include split-screen.
I agree greed is the reason for a lot of cases. With games like the new battlefront collection, they ABSOLUTELY could have and should have kept 4 player split screen. But to answer the original question of why split screen isn't in modern games, performance is a big concern. When you play split screen, your console/PC has to render the game twice, or three or four times depending on how many players, and split screen play is just not viable performance wise for a lot of high graphics modern games. Not to mention that the higher the resolution, performance would tank even harder.
CRTVs are not necessarily tiny, you know. Definitely not the ones in the 00s. If anything, they are bulky and heavy. Flatscreens got their name for a reason. No massive electron gun and magnets in back.
This isn't even that true. Take Call of Duty for example. They used to only have splitscreen on console but never on PC. Ever since Black Ops 3, they now have it built-in on PC too. Which is nice. Battlefront II never even originally had splitscreen on PC, but it does with Classic Collection. Although, with the original, you could use the same copy on multiple PCs and do LAN parties.
@@yurei3714 RE 4 is a remake from ground up. Different engine, gameplay, everything. RE 4 also had a different remaster in 2014 that just made things slightly less blurry (and a few bonus features). But classic Battlefront was always a very attractive pair of games to begin with and didn't suffer from blurriness due to technical limitaitons....at least not on PC.
I criticize the CC as much as the next guy, but that dream was never a realistic request to ask for. That was not something that is feasible in the game engine, according to one of the top modders, IamaShaymin.
@@UnchainedEruption idk man, I think now that I know it’s literally just a lazy port with some graphics tweaks, my expectations are more realistic, but at the time I didn’t know the company and genuinely thought someone was coming in to build off the original’s framework and make the game we all wanted. If Skyrim modders can figure out how to make online multiplayer work in a single player RPG engine, anyone that tells you “it’s not feasible” just doesn’t care, or doesn’t get paid enough to care.
I have no experience with how these games are coded but regarding the Loading Screen SFX for Battlefront 1, to me it sounds like it actually is using the correct SFX but playing at the wrong speed. It's possible that some kind of sound modifier is broken/missing in the Classic Collection because it's slower both times it plays, not just the second time. Also considering that there is seemingly no other SFX changes, it makes way more sense for this to be a bug or mistake than a deliberate change. Again, I have no idea what the coding is like so I could be completely wrong but that's my guess on what happened.
This seems more likely. I don't know how BF is coded, but I know alot of older games would reuse sound effects and adjust their pitch/speed to save on space rather than making entirely new sound effects (Banjo and Kazooie did this alot).
This happened a lot for different original Xbox games as well, as it had unique sound hardware and software-games like Halo or Half Life was able to take advantage of that and certain sounds aren’t always replicable. If you’d like to see a comparison, look up a video between the differences of the Xbox and Xbox 360 ports of Half Life 2, and the sound you’ll notice right away.
6:06 Even Flandrew doesn't know which one is which... 🙃 The footage on the left is from the Original and the one on the right is from the Classic Collection. You can tell by the different font used on the HUD.
Like with many people, I grew up with these games and they have a special place in my heart. Thank you for dedicating your channel to games like these. I have gotten a lot of enjoyment seeing games again that I haven't played in a while.
As someone who grew up playing on PS2 and did also have the PC titles which I played a lot still, I've always missed playing with controller and PC version didn't have that as well as its the buggiest thing to launch on modern hardware. Since the collection came out I've been able to play with the native controller support and have been enjoying it almost non-stop on my PC and on the go with the SteamDeck. This re-release doesn't fit the bill for everyone but for quite a few out there so long as you look at what it actually brings it can be well worth it. Also expect many great mods as the game is 64bit now and can actually handle its own weight memory wise
It's been ported for ages, and you got what you paid for if you saw the Classic Collection and thought that was a release with any effort behind it, anything less than a soulless cash-grab.
@@Pillarofautumnn I'm not bitter, least not anymore than anyone should be. I would've loved these old games to be remastered and re-released, but when it was announced I realised it wasn't going to be a re-release with much effort behind it, and I wasn't going to be supporting that. It released to critically negativite reception, which you'd understand makes me happy for being right. This kind of mistake *should* influence the industry to do better, only problem is there's a lot more people out there who are fairly blind consumers, and I could garuntee the game still made decent money for everyone involved in the re-release because of all the suckers who threw money at it. *I don't know about console gamers, I imagine it might be harder to get the original games for consoles? Backwards compatibility? But for PC, I have very little sympathy considering both original games are on Steam and aren't that different to this re-release considering the considerable price difference.
They also randomly cut half of the 501st journal entries from BF2's story mode. Went into it with the expectation to hear Temura Morrison narrating before and after the missions but for whatever reason they cut the post mission scenes??
My favorite option back in the day was playing as the vibro swordsman from the KOTOR mod… but overwhelmingly bringing a sword to a blaster fight just got me butchered again and again 😂😂😂… good times it was
What's funny is that supposedly, the two hero assault characters in the Classic Collection were ripped from a PC mod from the classic Battlefront 2. WITHOUT PERMISSION FTOM THE ORIGINAL MOD CREATOR.
Ngl ive been playing the battlefront classic collection multiplayer a few days after launch and have been having a blast, the launch made me and my friends go insane, but it did feel nice getting to see 4k textures running at 60fps on one of my childhood games :), awesome video and appreciate the breakdown because comparisons are where its at!
Yeah, I understand the online multiplayer can be a bit iffy right now, but man, if these two games with the upscaling, don’t look how I remember them when I played them in high school lol
What makes my experience funny was I bought the original versions on my series s, and then about a month later, the classic collection is announced. I thought it was pointless to get the classic collection since I just bought the originals for almost $6 (they were both on sale so it was a steal). As soon as I heard about the backlash, I just laugh while I just play local multiplayer and the single player on the originals.
ikr like have EA battlefronts visuals with the original battlefront gameplay. Would look so nice. But that wont happen, at least we got modders like HarrisonFog to make visual mods for the original games.
There is a mod for the original bf2 called the "saga edition", it adds all of the maps from bf1 and the bf2 xbox dlc content, it modifies the campaign so that you control planet appropriate clones like galactic marines on Mygeeto, etc, it adds cross eras like clones vs empire or rebels vs cis into instant action and galactic conquest, and it is free to download on moddb. The only flaw is that mp is very unstable...
I should note about the addition of Kit Fitso and Ventress, it turns out that they were just using the code from the mod that added them to the old PC versions and they didn't even bother to put the modder's name in the credits
I remember back in 2004 when I was 9 years old the original landed right in my hands on Christmas day along with a ps2 console...I got so highly addicted to the game I pretended that I was not well just so I could skip school and play this game.
That's what I get for preordering a game I suppose Though to be fair the Switch port needs about half the storage and it's not completely terrible. I wish it had more features like motion aiming though, especially considering the price tag
Guess the fact the Switch can only do 1080p max helped, no 4K uncompressed textures to deal with. Personally I was already waiting until the collection goes on sale during something like May the Fourth anyway, but after hearing about the online issues I’m more glad I didn’t grab it day one.
I played both the Steam/Switch version and honestly Switch version experience was okay. I am refunding it on Steam and just playing the older versions there instead with mods.
They fixed everything like the controls in the fighters and other things. Bought it yesterday. You can create your own server all the achievements are pretty easy. Everything is working for me and my friends perfectly. We just create a server search for our name what we put and then boom other ppl also join it’s mad fun. The bots are awesome 32 v 32 fucking phenomenal compared to the og which I still own from childhood.
On launch night there was only a handful of servers but since there is a lot more and I haven't really had any issues, playing this game online is like a dream come true! BF1 n 2 and Halo 1 n 2 are my most played gamed ever and are huge parts of my childhood
0:21 This is a prime example of why just upscaling textures isn't the answer when it comes to old games. These games were designed in an era when we were all still playing on low resolution CRT TVs. The image on the left has a resemblance of a blurred waterfall off in the distance which looked good on a CRT back in the day. The image on the right is a sharp high resolution abomination that has no possible way of looking good on any type of screen or monitor, the illusion is completely lost now and actually makes it look worse than the blurry image that was used originally...
I was able to tell the difference when you did the little guessing game. But then again I've been playing at native 4k ultra for years so really isn't that difficult at that point. As for my feelings for this game I got the game at launch and ill be honest I can't really complain on the gameplay side. What I wanted from this collection was better 4k support + controller support as there is zero controller support on PC for the original games which is what I did get. So I've been having a blast and tearing it up. Day one MP was cooked but I honestly I haven't had problems since. I've been able to get into matches and play. However due to the lower player count and also even less servers of people using AA I probably won't play too much MP not until more of my friends get the game (or get those medals to elite whichever comes first) as I was always a Galactic Conquest/IA fiend. The only thing about this game that bothers me other than the price tag (shoulda been like 25 bucks but I did get the discount so I didn't get it for 35 was almost 30 with tax) is the size. They need to do a better job on compressing those textures. I love to shit on devs that drop shitty games but the game works its not like its crashing left and right with unplayable bugs. The single player aspect was running like butter day one for me. It just had a bad MP launch and with how the gaming industry is now Aspyr could of charged the 60 and be real scumbags about it. I personally think the game is getting extra hate due to years upon years of BF fans getting screwed over much worse things (you know like lootboxes & heroes costing an insane amount of points to unlock for play in 2017 before it was patched out) & people having a massive hate boner for Aspyr due to some of their recent actual bad ports. MP should have been good day one but its egregious to see the amount of scorn people have produced for this title. Its funny too because Nightdive Studios recently released a "remaster" for Dark forces that cost 30 dollars. Mind you this "remaster" honestly feels like it had even less done to it than this title and is more expensive than this classic collection since it does not include dark forces II. And yet it has very positive reviews and no one is burying that game. Now there's some food for thought.
As someone who doesn't have an Xbox I'm very happy to have it available on playstation again. And thankfully I haven't had any issues with Multi-player
Its almost like any game thats come out recently, first week multiplayer is almost always broken due to lil errors that stack up as well as WAY more players than they ever expected playing
As someone who hasnt touched the classic collection yet, I'm glad I got your guessing game right. I put in tons of hours into the original games on both console and pc in my youth, so I'm just proud I was able to tell the two apart, not only based on the lighting changes as you mentioned, but mostly the sounds themselves. I could just hear those original sounds and knew it right away.
working is kind of overstatement. They are just as shitty like the collection is after the first day. The collection first day was a shitfest, but after the second day they are equally shitty. Don't let other's expect a better online time just because they bought the original, cause they won't get it.
The Game 1 and Game 2 comparisons were easy for me, all ya have to do is look at text size and format, kinda takes the guessing away from the guessing game x3
Another thing that is different is the lack of support for different languages. No audio of the original release's translation survived although the steam release also didn't have them. I wonder if the console versions of the classic collection shipped with that audio...
Not sure if this is what you are asking, but on both the PS5 and Switch version did seem to have an option to have text in another language, but the audio is still in English. My consoles are set to Spanish so that's how I found out.
@@TechSpec814 That is exactly the problem I meant. The og releases had localised audio and anything after the steam releases kept these out which always bothered me since I grew up listening to german. I once again would have to look into modding yet another version of battlefront just so I could experience it like I remember
@@DoktorObvious Dang really? I actually didn’t know the old games were like that. Sadly where I grew up, most games didn’t come in my native language so I was used to the English audio or text. It wasn’t till the PS3 and 360 era where I saw more games have more language options.
4x for every 1 level of scaling up, but when your going from what seems to be mostly 256 textures to 4k. no joke, its 16 times the detail LMAOO (technically) but as he said in the video that means nothing in actual quality since its not added detail, at best it might smooth some edges and thats it, the cost on memory is beyond not being worth it
No way they region locked the servers unlike the original version which was unlocked on top of not bothering do to crossplay edit: are we sure that's true it doesn't even make sense
The blurrier backgrounds of the original look better. They look more realistic. If you’re on a planet like Geonosis, the sky is most likely not clear and distant things would be slightly obscured or blurry. The new, super crisp backgrounds look so out of place.
I just checked my bc version of battlefront 2 on xbox and I saw the maps but when I checked the herpes vs villains mode I didn't see the 2 dlc characters. are they only available if you originally bought them when the game came out?
I fully expect them to cut and run on this too, now that it has failed. As someone who played the restored content mod on PC years ago, I feel so angry and robbed alongside the portion of the community who was looking forward to getting that as DLC. We were robbed as a collective because the restoration content is amazing and all fans should be able to experience it! I hope that those who haven't gotten to play it somehow get it on consoles one day. Never forget or let that travesty fall into obscurity!
I bought the game on switch. Day 1 the servers were broken but now I can easily join a match and play smoothly. I’m not really complaining about the price since it’s nothing to purchase tbh. I haven’t played these 2 games (preferably BF2) in almost 2 decades and seeing it in its glory on my TV all crisp is amazing, and to me the quality is a big boost since I played it originally on our PS2
Me and my brother used to always find the fun stuff. Like when we loaded up bespin platforms and rushed to a tie bomber as pilot class, only to land in one of the bridges and watch the AI scurry around trying to get to the enemy. Also, landing on count dooku during the battle for geonosis was always fun.
An interesting point to discuss is that ventress wasn't in the original PC version of Battlefront 2, and while she is in this classic edition, it has apparently come out that Aspyr took an Asajj Ventress mod that added her back into the game for PC since she was cut from that version and just put it in the classic collection, ripping off iamashaymin's mod, now after they were caught there was an update to replace this with an actual ventress character instead of a reskin of aalya secura for the dark side. nowever because of this the knights of the old republic remake has been delayed for the time being.
I must be the ONLY person that actually enjoyed the OG PC menus. I thought they were very clear, neat and obvious in their use while all being easily accessible with what you need.
You can 100% remap controls in both games on consoles. Also ticket counts have been boosted to 500 and bf1 multiplayer has absolutely 0 issues compared to BF2 (which has improved since launch)
I’ll be completely honest, the collection is proof that higher resolution and DPI textures does NOT make a game better. It just leads to crusty looking textures/bump maps, a weird smothered in Vaseline look and bloated game file sizes. Also online still works for both originals on Steam.
I don't understand how some ports of old games have issues like this collection has had. There are great examples of games that play better and are just better versions of the original such as Metroid prime 1 being in the trilogy version or remastered version and that is 20 year old. Sure Nintendo obviously did port it to the Wii and switch but still.
You can actually rebind controls in the first game, its just not very obvious how to do it, but you can just scroll up and select the controls you want to change. That being said there still is no way to uninvert the flight control so it still needs to be fixed.
i dont know, i prefer the blurrier backgrounds more. they not only have a warm vibe to it that feels nostalgic, especially for me since i played battlefront 1 all the time back in the day as a kid (im sure you can tell with my profile picture) but also because they gave this unintentional depth of field(?) effect to the background, it felt like it was blurry because it was in the background and NOT because, y'know, technical limitations. it worked out well in it's favor. so i wish they just kind of left some of the blurrier visuals like that.
the only thing i want from a remaster is improved compatibility to ensure the game wont be lost to time regardless of what game it is, once you start changing the game itself just make a new game
Good video... Now I still have the orginal Xbox Star Wars Battlefront II (which has all the DLCs and extra heroes) on my Xbox series X hard drive and have been playing it lately to compare it to the Star Wars Battlefront Classic Collection...here are somethung I've notice that are messed up in the Classic Collection...Kit Fisto's lightsaber and his force glide movements are all messed up in the classic collection. And Ventress' force dart projectiles have been made mostly useless in classic collection (unlike in the original Battlefront II, where the force darts were formidable weapons) and her lightsabers are also messed up too in the classic collection. Also when using droidakas, I have a lot of difficulty unrolling back into attack mode after rolling (which was never an issue with the orginal). Not to mention all the after mission cut scenes were removed on the Classic Collection.
battlefront 2 was one of the games I played the most during my childhood, I loved galactic conquest and played it for hours on end, it's a shame such an amazing game got such a bad re-release, it didn't deserve this
Can't even add four player splitscreen on a classic splitscreen multiplayer game that already HAD it??? What the actual fuck is going on with these dev companies.
Theres literally dozens of mods out there to literally make the games look far better than this that have been out for years now and for free. v1.5 for example, which is no more than 5gb worth of updating

I agree. The bf2 remastered mod is amazing!
BF2 with mods completely destroys the new collection
Had it on PC for years, I prefer being able to get on my PS5 and just play.
Can I get it for Xbox?
That's what I've done as well. It's ironic how the modding community can make something that actually works, unlike Disney.

Aspyr: There is no mercy!
What even more crazy is they were the ones behind the kotor 1 remake - F - and kotor 2 on the switch - that never got the cut content that were promise, double F -

Using a framecounter you can actually see the OG loading screen is 30fps but the new one is oddly locked to 20fps which makes me think its not intentional and will be an easy fix for them
True if it’s not broken don’t fix it. Why change it if so many people liked that zoom sound

The Steam version also removed it.
@@CaptainFordo21 I hate how they do that. they don't even bother to find the original game they just take the Steam Version and upscale it. It was the same deal with GTA Vice City. @@dn22pkkdd476We’re in the 2020’s right now. He’s referring to the 2000’s decade
Mods improving AI, also added splitscreen for 4+ players to PC etc. etc
Modders also added new maps and stuff, in fact there is mod maps that you can *_FLY FROM GROUND TO SPACE_* and from SPACE TO GROUND.

They didn't change it, they just didn't patch the audio files, that's why it sounds like that
Honestly, the haziness and low res backgrounds actually add to the atmosphere on some maps. Like Geonosis.
That's what I'm saying. Places like Geonosis or Felucia are SUPPOSED to be hazy, foggy, and muddy. Being crisp and clear doesn't automatically make something better - there is a such thing as artistic intent.
@@Zeug_ finally someone says this!
Ah, the yesteryear artist feel for the common misconception that increasing the resolution of an existing texture means it's now that higher resolution.
If you stretch a 240p texture to 4k, you just have a bigger 240p texture. You actually have to edit the textures.
Eh, it does look like they AI upscaled it (such as Waifu2x or LetsEnhance). Same thing Persona 3 Portable rerelease did.
Battlefront II was one of my favorite games back then. Absolute masterpiece
It was the shit back in 2004/2005

Same had so much fun playing og battlefront 2 as a kid, such a fantastic game
Both originals were free with gold and run perfectly on Xbox series S/X. They have auto HDR with edge enhancements and upscaling, as well as comes with all the DLC for both games, cheats, and exploits. There is zero reason to waste money and gigs on the new collection. If the lighting bothers you that much, increase the game brightness and backlight on your tv. Problem solved
Battle Front 1 as well. It had the better maps in my opinion.
ngl, the old blurry shit looked better even if it's at a lower resolution, since it looked like it was this towering Goliath of a structure in the distance, where even though your eyes can't quite adjust to it, you can still see it looming there. That might not have been the intent, but it's the illusion given.
The remaster just looks too clean and it makes the backgrounds look like a wallpaper behind everyone.
This is why OG gaming will always have its charm, because there is artistic integrity there.
yeah it looks like clip art otherwise. there's no sense of depth, looks edited in, etc... 2D backgrounds have to be somewhat blurry and messy to add that sense of depth and distance. how can someone make that mistake in 2024?
yeah and those waterfalls look like utter shit and weird.

As a fan of good typography, I share your pain
to be fair, the original steam version of BF2 also doesn't have the blocky font. if I remember correctly, it's lost.
@@picclejar yup the old steam BF2 is also a horrendous mess, and that's why i was so hopeful that this release could swoop by and fix everything

It has split screen. I've been playing split screen with my friends since launch
@iMRCuddles yes, but only two players split screen like the PS2 version when the original xbox version had four player split screen
1:11 those background sceneries are SUPPOSED to be blurry to create the illusion of depth-of-field
Was doing some 4 player split screen the other day on the original 😊
To be fair the original blurry background gave the game depth. While as the new one clearly shows its a skybox
The most agregious part is that they changed the BF1 map loading sound. It is literally one of the most iconic things of that game.
They changed the font of the "Loading" too. I mean, how do you even fuck that up? You have to actually try to replace the audio files.
At 1:20 i actually like the original background better. It makes it look somewhat farther away and actually part of a 3D environment, whereas the new one may be better graphics, but it looks like a 2D drawing just plastered into a physical "movie-set" wall.
Plus the clones I remember running faster in the original and move less slow
It's a travesty

CC not having 4-8 player online galactic conquest is criminal
Right!! I long for online galactic conquest
Or 32 player but yes

It's been ported for ages, and you got what you paid for if you saw the Classic Collection and thought that was a release with any effort behind it, anything less than a soulless cash-grab.
@@blakesbyso bitter for no reason
Seriously? That's weak, the BF2 campaign had no right to go so hard, but it did and those narrations really helped to sell it
That download size IS NUTS 🤪
My favorite option back in the day was playing as the vibro swordsman from the KOTOR mod… but overwhelmingly bringing a sword to a blaster fight just got me butchered again and again 😂😂😂… good times it was
Palpatine is running Aspyr now, no other explanation.
You know. Palpatine is way more chill dude compared to the real ceo.
Somehow, Battlefront returned.
What's funny is that supposedly, the two hero assault characters in the Classic Collection were ripped from a PC mod from the classic Battlefront 2. WITHOUT PERMISSION FTOM THE ORIGINAL MOD CREATOR.
Thank you for doing this video. I was hoping you would!
Imagine if they had actually remastered the game with modern graphics and just gave us that would be amazing
It's 64 bit now so there's more freedom for modders to do that. It'll be less likely to crash with the extra memory such as the BF3 restored mod.
ikr like have EA battlefronts visuals with the original battlefront gameplay. Would look so nice. But that wont happen, at least we got modders like HarrisonFog to make visual mods for the original games.
I was sold when you said they increased the amount of bots. Immediatly refunded when you said no 4 player splitscreen.
60GB for 2 PS2 era games?
There is a mod for the original bf2 called the "saga edition", it adds all of the maps from bf1 and the bf2 xbox dlc content, it modifies the campaign so that you control planet appropriate clones like galactic marines on Mygeeto, etc, it adds cross eras like clones vs empire or rebels vs cis into instant action and galactic conquest, and it is free to download on moddb. The only flaw is that mp is very unstable...
0:20
I can't unsee how god awful those waterfalls look upscaled.
I should note about the addition of Kit Fitso and Ventress, it turns out that they were just using the code from the mod that added them to the old PC versions and they didn't even bother to put the modder's name in the credits
Oh ya read about that on steam. Pathetic
3:34 is enough of a reason for me to remove this from my steam cart. Great video as always!
I remember back in 2004 when I was 9 years old the original landed right in my hands on Christmas day along with a ps2 console...I got so highly addicted to the game I pretended that I was not well just so I could skip school and play this game.
That's what I get for preordering a game I suppose
Though to be fair the Switch port needs about half the storage and it's not completely terrible. I wish it had more features like motion aiming though, especially considering the price tag
Stop preordering games. How many times do you need to fall for this before you people learn?
Never preorder, it has been a scam for a decade now.
Removing the invert Y axis for some reason is also incredibly asinine.
Considering the recent controversy, the upscaled textures might just be someone's modded textures "borrowed" for the remaster.
Great video. Gonna get this on my buddy's ps5 so we can play splitscreen together. We weren't gonna touch the mulitplayer for quite some time anyhow
The classic collection’s new UI fonts throw me off.
On PS5 the game is a broken unplayable mess in offline single player too.
I really hope I'm still able to get a refund for this sh*t game.
Fantastic and in-depth video. Thanks Flandrew!
I thought they would use higher resolution movie cutscenes for the title on Star Wars Battlefront 2 at least
To much hard work for Aspyr.
The PC Steam version of BF2 has had working multiplayer servers this whole time.
working is kind of overstatement. They are just as shitty like the collection is after the first day.
The collection first day was a shitfest, but after the second day they are equally shitty.
Don't let other's expect a better online time just because they bought the original, cause they won't get it.
@@DarkcranioBullshit. The OG servers are fine.
Maybe I'm missing something but last time I tried it was pretty dead
@@TechSpec814 yea that's fair. It isn't a huge deal afterall and I think it only affects me but that's still the reason I'll never play this version
So what we learned today is buy and play the original games instead of the classic collection!
3:07 the ships get quirky at Bespin ✨ lmao great video man 💙
Also cool Niosai cameo :0
The thing about increasing the texture resolution is that no matter what you do the size is 4x as big as the previous.
4x for every 1 level of scaling up, but when your going from what seems to be mostly 256 textures to 4k. no joke, its 16 times the detail LMAOO (technically) but as he said in the video that means nothing in actual quality since its not added detail, at best it might smooth some edges and thats it, the cost on memory is beyond not being worth it
The classic collection looks sterile. I’ll take a bit janky but more organic any day.
I'm glad I'm not the only person who noticed the chime in Battlefront 1. I felt robbed when it did the same noise 😭 .
No way they region locked the servers unlike the original version which was unlocked on top of not bothering do to crossplay edit: are we sure that's true it doesn't even make sense
game devs struggling to do what they did 20 years ago lmao
The blurrier backgrounds of the original look better. They look more realistic. If you’re on a planet like Geonosis, the sky is most likely not clear and distant things would be slightly obscured or blurry. The new, super crisp backgrounds look so out of place.
I just checked my bc version of battlefront 2 on xbox and I saw the maps but when I checked the herpes vs villains mode I didn't see the 2 dlc characters. are they only available if you originally bought them when the game came out?
I read somewhere that you had to reinstall it.
Herpes vs villains 🤣😂
obviously not! u need to update ur game
I like the "Hazy look" in the Original
Still mad Aspyr cancelled the KotOR2 restored content DLC
I fully expect them to cut and run on this too, now that it has failed.
As someone who played the restored content mod on PC years ago, I feel so angry and robbed alongside the portion of the community who was looking forward to getting that as DLC. We were robbed as a collective because the restoration content is amazing and all fans should be able to experience it! I hope that those who haven't gotten to play it somehow get it on consoles one day.
Never forget or let that travesty fall into obscurity!
Charging almost as much as a new game for a 20 year old game that they did nothing in is wild. Game companies are out of control
Thank you for pointing out that both games are still available on Steam, everyone else acts as if Collection is the only way to play them.
When they go on sale in the Xbox store, they're usually around $2.50. Not sure how long that's going to last before micro$oft removes them.
That waterfall will bring nightmares to some, including me.
What they really needed to add were all the maps from Star wars battlefront renegade squadron and Star wars battlefront elite squadron as well
Nearly 60gb download is not worth the buy for me
Me and my brother used to always find the fun stuff. Like when we loaded up bespin platforms and rushed to a tie bomber as pilot class, only to land in one of the bridges and watch the AI scurry around trying to get to the enemy. Also, landing on count dooku during the battle for geonosis was always fun.
Ah yes it automatically kills jedi. just land on them and they are flattened 😂 good times
As long as you can name your profile "jud jud" I'm in 😂😂😂
True but can you be invincible on the newer one with codebreaker like you could on PS2? 😂🤣
I thought they were very clear, neat and obvious in their use while all being easily accessible with what you need.
nah. They were ass. As much low quality the collection is. The consoles menus are much nicer.
Genuinely had no idea people hated them until a few days ago. I _hate_ the console menus
Since I only played the PC port, I never had an issue with those. They felt like a warfare schematics or something like that.
ewwwww
I’m so glad they updated the game to modern standards which is to say they made the game worse for no reason and up charged the shit out of it.
Nothing will fully replace the originals, but at least this keeps it alive
this replaces the originals
The originals are better and id rather play those
This was my first pre-order. Coincidentally, my first refund.
I still have the original PS2 Battlefront games.
Same dude
Same here
Ok
I don't understand how some ports of old games have issues like this collection has had. There are great examples of games that play better and are just better versions of the original such as Metroid prime 1 being in the trilogy version or remastered version and that is 20 year old. Sure Nintendo obviously did port it to the Wii and switch but still.
Thanks, keep me posted.
You can actually rebind controls in the first game, its just not very obvious how to do it, but you can just scroll up and select the controls you want to change. That being said there still is no way to uninvert the flight control so it still needs to be fixed.
mOdeRn GaMiNg
Other than the size of the whole thing, the change of the chime in BF1 is my biggest gripe
i dont know, i prefer the blurrier backgrounds more. they not only have a warm vibe to it that feels nostalgic, especially for me since i played battlefront 1 all the time back in the day as a kid (im sure you can tell with my profile picture) but also because they gave this unintentional depth of field(?) effect to the background, it felt like it was blurry because it was in the background and NOT because, y'know, technical limitations. it worked out well in it's favor. so i wish they just kind of left some of the blurrier visuals like that.
the only thing i want from a remaster is improved compatibility to ensure the game wont be lost to time regardless of what game it is, once you start changing the game itself just make a new game
Not to mention all the after mission cut scenes were removed on the Classic Collection.
battlefront 2 was one of the games I played the most during my childhood, I loved galactic conquest and played it for hours on end, it's a shame such an amazing game got such a bad re-release, it didn't deserve this
Thank you for this comparison. Seem like few works has been done in the classic collection 🤔.
Can't even add four player splitscreen on a classic splitscreen multiplayer game that already HAD it??? What the actual fuck is going on with these dev companies.
When the original looks better in every single way you know you fucked up
'Preciate the comparison, I think I will be content with just the BF2 I have on Steam.
Theres literally dozens of mods out there to literally make the games look far better than this that have been out for years now and for free. v1.5 for example, which is no more than 5gb worth of updating
