Same, I sunk literally hours into this game since the PSP was pretty much the only thing I had at the time. You'd be surprised how good I was at navigating the joystick controls, lol. The only reason I stopped playing was because my PSP got stolen one day with Renegade Squadron in the drive.
Renegade and Elite Squadron were a massive part of my childhood. I remember competing for the front page of the leaderboards and doing pretty well (until hackers using the orbital strike took over). They are class games that really should have ports.
Fun fact, Elite Squadron is actually just the psp port of BF3. When they cancelled BF3, the psp port was already mostly done and they decided to just release it anyway but change the title. You can see this in a few ways: 1) There are beta copies of Elite Squadron floating around online and they all still have the title Battlefront 3. 2) The story is identical to BF 3 with the same missions and everything. We've seen enough of the cancelled BF3 and cutscenes that you can actually compare the console scenes to some of the same scenes in the psp version. 3) Elite Squadron has the same ground to space battle system that the BF3 console version was going to have. Anyway, there's a few articles you can find but a lot of them mix up the details and so a lot of people think Elite Squadron is its own game, I think not many people are aware that it is quite literally a Battlefront 3 port.
That's freaking amazing I never knew that fact about it just being a port of cancelled BF3. Here's hoping for a fan remake of the game using Elite Squadron as a base.
I played so much elite squadron online multiplayer. Very phenomenal game. I loved blending the space and ground battles together, you could shoot artillery from the star destroyer to the ground
If I remember correctly, the devs on BF3 were having difficulty getting the ground-to-space traversal working properly on the hardware at the time, which is why Elite Squadron utilised the cutscenes to hide the loading (not to mention the PSP had even more inferior hardware.)
I must have spent over 400 hours playing this game. I took it with me everywhere. I think it was the first shooter I ever played that let you fully customize your character, and I spent hours doing that over and over, perfecting loadouts and looks. The maps were fun, the combat - while a little clunky with no extra stick - was great, and the lock-on feature that kept combat moving made me feel like space Rambo. 😂 I didn't know it got mixed reviews or was slept on until this video, because I always considered it one of the best PSP and Star Wars games. Elite Squadron was amazing as well, but this one will always be my go-to PSP Battlefront game. Thanks for giving it some love!
The game was ahead of its time with the customization. For a game that came out in 2007, they really packed as much content as they could into the game.
The Ord Mantel mission seems like a reference to Han's offhand mention of them running into a bounty hunter on Ord Mantel in Empire Strikes Back. However it was an event that was already covered by comics completely different, making this another instance of Battlefront retelling an already explained event (Battlefront 2 being like, the one of many, many times the Death Star plans were stolen)
The plans were changed to being in a series of pieces. Aka every time the plans were stolen only a piece was taken and when they got all 4 they combined them.
The multiplayer for this game with custom classes was really stupid fun. I ended up playing as a unit with like no HP, but rocking a stealth suit and shotgun or flamethrower to wreck havoc like some sort of fucked up TF2 spy
I remember taking advantage of an exploit where you can get more equipment then it would normally allow through a specific method. That’s how I bugged my friends at school while playing by having all the best gear during our multiplayer games.
I was a PSP evangelist. It’s all I played all the freaking time. This game was so amazing to me and I had an absolute blast playing it. I remember freeloading off a neighbors WiFi (remember the days of no password WiFi??) and playing this game for hours. Every time I see this game nowadays I just get hit with a rush of nostalgia.
Oh, you should DEFINITELY do Elite Squadron to wrap up the original Battlefront series! Also, you said that you could play as all the heroes from Battlefront II, but that isn't actually true. You can't play as Princess Leia, Anakin Skywalker or Aayla Secura in this game (according to Wikipedia); however, you CAN play as Kit Fisto and Asajj Ventress who were exclusive to the Xbox version of Battlefront II.
I guess its because its almost been 20 years since release. I wish steam had better optimized servers for battlefronts tho. Any ideas how to get ping low

Two games I was obssessed with as a kid was Renegade Squadron and the PSP version of the Force Unleashed. Thank you for making this video, this game is very important to me
I originally got my PlayStation Portable just to play this game. I was a major fan of battlefront 2 growing up and fell in love with renegade squadron instantly. The fact this game was on a portable blew my mind and to this day RS is my second favorite game in the series right behind Battlefront 2.
The first game I sunk tons of hours onto with online matches. Even by the time the PSVita had come out, there was still enough of a player base online for matches to still be entertaining.
I'm surprised you didn't cover that this was the first time you got heros in space battles with access to ships like the Millennium Falcon, Slave One, Anakin's Starfighter, and more.
There was a glitch I did in this game all the time to put as much equipment as you wanted on your guy. You flip the WAN switch on, load into a multiplayer game by yourself, put your equipment on (going past the 100 point limit) then flip off the WAN switch. The game will take you out of multiplayer and next time you go into singleplayer you'll still have all your equipment.
You need to do Elite Squadron next. Its made using the battlefront 3 stuff. Its got the bf3 story and the ground to space battles (with a cutscene, its a handheld game afterall) and the customization stuff too
Congrats on 100k! I played a ton of Renegade Squadron as a kid and absolutely loved it. It's 100% got its flaws and honestly I haven't returned to it in little under a decade now but I really like the game. Unlike Elite Squadron which was basically a port of a cancelled game, Renegade Squadron was built for the PSP and I think it really shows. Great video as always!
Ah, this was a nostalgia blast! I have fond memories of playing this on my PSP for hours. I remember that by timing the jet pack boosts you could fly nearly infinitely or until you smacked into the invisible walls at the edge of the map.
i knew i wasn't crazy. when anyone talked about battlefront i always thought of this one but could never remember the name for it and seeing as everyone only just talked about one and two i just assumed i was misremember things or perhaps thinking of a different game. so happy someone finally brought it up
It's funny... I still have a working PSP and still, 13 years later, I have the Renegade Squadron game and play it periodically (I also have Elite Squadron, which complements this game with mechanics, but I play here and there). The game is great and the combat is pretty good. It's a pity that it has become the one and only until now.
I had this as a kid, loved it. I loved the space battles, having heroes AND a capturable command post? Brilliant. Plus I think I even sampled the online play. I just remember hating the controls.
I got this game when I was 11, a few years after it released. I probably have hundreds of hours on this game. The music, the visuals and the general Star Wars feel that this game had are forever my personal benchmark of what Star Wars should be. I love this game to death.
first battlefront for me, i was soo jealous of my friends with playstation consoles having battlefront. When i got my psp i played this until 4 in the morning lol. good memories.
Nice review! I really love that game. I take this game from the Star Wars Battlefront series of games as part of Battlefront (2004-2009) with Elite Squadron.
I used to have the star wars PSP and had renegade squadron. I will never forget the times i brought it into elementary school and i would have 30+ kids gathered around me being amazed at a PORTABLE psp. The good old days
Man, i played 100s of hours on Renegade Squadron. I played a normal build of high health, wrist rockets, and blaster rifle. The Galactic Conquest was loads of fun, and the story was alot of fun. Honestly wish it was ported so we could have this experience on modern consoles. Cant wait for the Elite Squadron one.
I played this game so much as I child. I forgot how many times I completed it. The one issue with the campaign was that I always seemed to struggle with that mission in a junkyard defending Chewbacca. Everything else was ok, but that section was always a struggle, even when I got better at it, I was always tensing up and fearful
My favorite thing with the class system was that if you went into multi-player, set your class way over the max limit, and then turned off the psp internet connection, you would keep the over powered class as long as you didn't go back to customize it. Nothing like having a chain gun and full stats with a jet pack.
It's so cool to me that it has some vehicles from Empire at War, like the rebel T4-B tank. Now that's a vehicle that was completely forgotten, together with the T2-B
I guess the next Battlefront game will be Elite Squadron, aka, the PSP and Nintendo DS port of what could've been Battlefront 3 since, based on the leak cutscenes and story details, they are the same.
Top tip: you can change the controls to fire with the R button and aim using square, triangle, circle and X, Turning those buttons into the right analogue stick. It massively improves this game
The memories playing this on my white PSP with Darth Vader on the back of it. This and elite needs to be like DLC content for the re-release of the classic games coming soon.
This game felt like battlefront 3 to me as a kid. The level of customization was great and all the unique maps that were never seen in the movies were really cool. Honestly would’ve been my favorite battlefront game if it was a little bigger.
I still like playing this every now and then. It is a lot better than the PSP version of Battlefront II. I like that heroes can actually go against each other.
2007; the best year after 1997 for Star Wars, movies, games, music and tv. I knew this for the longest time and a recent article confirmed this! I can’t see a better year coming anytime soon.
My dad got me a psp when I was 5 and it came with this game I had no knowledge what Star Wars was but I kept playing this game as it was the only game I had at the time then there was a announcement on Cartoon Network that the clone wars was premiering and I thought to myself “hey those are the white armored guys in my game” and the rest is pretty much history this game was my introduction to starwars and I’m so thankful I was able to play it when I was young
I remember this, in fact, I still have my UMD. This was fun but quite different from SWBF2. There was a glitch to use as many points as you wanted and it even worked in multiplayer. Speaking of which, it had infrastructure multiplayer! That in and of itself was really fun when it was there.
The one issue I had with this one is believe it or not the controls. I preferred the original BF2 PSP controls which is wild to many. Seeing these videos makes me consider playing the new BF2 just to give it a shot. Worse case can always come back to the classics :)😊
Absolutely wild to me that Battlefront (2015) and Battlefront II (2017) completely omitted the best gameplay mode, Galactic Conquest, but the spinoff on PSP has it.
It'll never happen but I would kill for a proper PC/console port of this. PC port + steam workshop and this would be better than both modern Battlefield games 💀
Back when I played this as a kid, I switched to elite difficulty purely because I didn't like the autopilot system. And it made playing online and offline more consistent.
I still own my PSP copy!! It came with the white, Darth PSP my sister won at work (then ‘gave’ to me)🥰 I love that you did a video on it!! Yayayyayayayay!!!
I tell ya what, them damn PSPs were made to last. I booted mine up the other day after however many years of sitting in a closet just to play this game and it worked perfectly. So many fond memories from my childhood playing this one on long car rides!!!
I loved this game! And wow, i forgot about Korriban For the galactic conquest, i once defeated 90 troops or something huge like that with only 10 imps and the ATAT on Boz Pity. The ATAT got stopped by the rebels in a narrow passage, i used the shield and chain gun to mow the rebels down as they shot up at the walker
If they took Renegade Squadron and Elite Squadron, restored BF2's class system with the addition of a custom class system for just the player, BF 3's ground to space battles, and gave us galactic conquest from Elite squadron, but with EVERY map from BF 1, 2, RS, and ES it would be the greatest game ever.
I wish this and Elite Squadron would get ported to Steam.
Mod versions of the game play way better on BF2.
Same and I wish battlefront 2 2005 would be ported to ps4 and ps5

I still own my PSP copy!! It came with the white, Darth PSP my sister won at work (then ‘gave’ to me)🥰 I love that you did a video on it!! Yayayyayayayay!!!
I tell ya what, them damn PSPs were made to last. I booted mine up the other day after however many years of sitting in a closet just to play this game and it worked perfectly. So many fond memories from my childhood playing this one on long car rides!!!
This was my Battlefront game, loved playing it over and over again despite how low-res and clunky it was
Oh boy i remember being 11 and playing renegade and then elite. Fun times!
I loved this game! And wow, i forgot about Korriban
For the galactic conquest, i once defeated 90 troops or something huge like that with only 10 imps and the ATAT on Boz Pity. The ATAT got stopped by the rebels in a narrow passage, i used the shield and chain gun to mow the rebels down as they shot up at the walker
I had a blast with both this and Elite on my psp during its shelf life, I hope they both get remastered
Renegade Squadron is a classic, I replayed the campaign not long ago. Still great for an original story!
I had this game for psp. I remember thinking it played like battlefront 2 should have played on psp. It was one of my favorite games to play
I remember this game having the cool ass feature of going to space if you go high enough, and that shits cool
I think
That's its sequel Elite Squadron.
I've beaten Renegade Squadron several times. But, the multiplayer service was discontinued before I could get the multiplayer medals.
