Aaron Dizon Well like Bad Obsession Motorsports or Eetzi Productions (Bamse's Turbo Underpants) or Tom's Garage or Roadkill and MCM, any of the good youtube car channels, none of them release videos weekly. BUT if you follow them all, there is nice surprises once or twice every month. And that is what i call a nice surprise indeed. :)
The reasonable sound quality is likely due to a few things in tandem. For one, the tire is shaped in such a way that reflecting audio waves is hard because of it's heloid shape, and rubber composition. Second, that cheap woofer is likely intended for a rather large box, but a large rigid box will flex just about as much as that tire, meaning the walls of that tire are acting as a passive radiator. And third, two genius audio engineers designed and implemented it for the sake of amusing and educating their millions of fans even when they are car-less.
I don't know who haggard is but Im starting to think he pays people or uses phony profiles to come on here and mention his name repeatedly lol. One comment mentioned haggard and it was from a mans profile name but had a photo of a woman lol.
This isn't a filler episode, this is old school MCM. 10-20 minutes of a mad DIY mod you can do on your driveway with your mates, that's what this channel started as.
You guys should actually do a mad audiophile level install in a car. Custom speaker boxes and everything, something that would make a home theatre nerd jealous. A video where you guys are already the experts and we just watch and learn.
It's funny cause automakers have actually started doing this with their factory installed subs. I've owned 2 Mazda's that came with the Bose premium audio system package and both had the sub mounted in the spare tire. Granted you were still able to use the spare. You just had to unscrew the sub from the tire and pull it out. Then on my VW Jetta I ordered what they call a Soundbox (it's a sub and amp in one) as a VW genuine accessory and upon installation realized that it takes up the entire spare tire well leaving my spare to take up trunk space unless I take it out lol.
My dad did this way back in 2001 with his subaru impreza WRX hatchback but instead of rendering the spare useless he used fiberglass to make a bowl type thing that fit with the full tire (rim and all) and held the sub. me and all my friends thought this was absolutely awesome because it sounded awesome and we still had a spare! sure it took 2 moths but still. sounded awesome and was well worth it.
Marty's idea of the audio mechanics of the tire is correct! Also by having a sub attached to a tire, sitting in the trunk, you also allow the rumble of the bass to transfer to the chase and body, which would also allow 20Hz and lower to be felt stronger as well. In a car, not to important, but still cool especially for an audio guy like myself! :D
I can't believe how ridiculous the idea of this video is and that's one of the things I really love about it. Sure they do modifications that we've all done for the most part, and half the fun of their video's is the dialog that they bring, but DAMN! The originality of the cars and work they are perfect. It's an awesome mix of what you want to see and what you never expected to see. From 8500 miles away in Seattle USA I look forward to every one of these episodes and can't wait for the next. Best wishes to Blair and Marty both staying healthy and free of major car problems! :D
Very cool idea! Pioneer made a spare tire subwoofer back in the 90's that actually fit inside of your "gettum home spare". It only had like a 5.25" sub inside though
It's great to hear more about how you guys are actually not mechanics. You're just car enthusiasts with qualifications very far removed from the automotive world. Plus it's great to see you guys just doing stuff for fun. Have a great break over the summer and see you in 2016.
I did this with my 1999 Subaru Forester and it DID work really well. Mine was mounted to an actual spare wheel/tire that is useable with a few minutes of disassembly. I made it so I could remove the subwoofer rather easily, no ruining the tire with a hole (that's just plain wacko). There is no good reason to put sealant around the edge of the wood, it seals well enough to the rubber IMHO. I held the baffle in place with long threaded rods and wingnuts. Makes me think I should do this again with my 2015 Forester.
take this Idea to the next level: take a big old tractor tyre, trow in 4 used celestion speakers and have a maaaad looking cabinet to hook up to your amp and rock out
Awesome guys, back to the roots of MCM with a quick and fun install. I'm amped that you now have a space to work without upsetting anyone........MAAAAAAAAAAAD
Despite the fact that it probably wouldn't matter because of the quality of the "sub box", but if your concern was the reflections, you could fill the tire with polyfill.
I've been watching you guys since the TRD Lazer video came out, and after seeing all the big projects you've been working on, it was such a laugh to watch you guys do something completely outrageous again... keep the good times rolling!
It was only tested lying in the trunk ? not in the spare tire compartment ? With carpet on top ? So it was not tested. But who cares ? That looks amazing. Don't care how it sounds !
This actually works really good. My Grand Cherokee has a huge spare well, big enough for a 30" diameter tire. I did pretty much the same thing using a 245/75-16 tire, the biggest I could fit in the well and easily big enough to hold a JL Audio 12w3v3-4. Thumps pretty good even with the spare tire cover in place.
So pleased to see a new DIY episode! Really missed the old school DIY stuff, not that the bigger budget / more pro stuff is bad, just found the channel for this kind of stuff and love seeing it!
With you two guys combined knowledge in audio, y'all should do a legit subwoofer/multiple sub install explaining what you need, what size box you need, how much power you need to push the sub and why all these things are important to achieve the optimal sound for your car. I bet it would be a popular video. :) Cheers! from Dallas, Texas!
For fathers day I made my old man one of those with a Mickey Thompson indie series tire (not functional due to sidewall damage). I made it with a 15 inch pyle subwoofer and a 700 watt Bluetooth amp (uses less than half the sub peak), and a 9,800 mah dc battery pack, with a leather back. This cost me around $400 but dude this thing kicks, and its perfect for car shows, I highly recommend it for decent sound quality and extremely mad looks.
I used the seat belt and buckled a base tube in the back seat of my 928. It works pretty sell and it never moves so it is safe and secure. Although I did mount the amp inside of the spare tire so it could be removed easily if I needed to gain access to the tire or the battery. Cool build, I hope there are many more diy friendly ones like it soon :)
I'm doing this to my dad's Suzuki jimny, his spare tyre is on the rear of trunk and doing this mod would be realy awesome and the best thing is you won't be called a ricer for this.
Liang Kar Ee Or you could put the sub on the actual spare and have the sub on the outside. Jokes, but would look pretty hilarious. Good luck with the mod bro and hope your dad likes it!
ZileAite Yes i actualy planing to do that lol! He would freak out for sure haha! The only thing bothering me is how should i cover it when it started to rain or when i parking in a public place...
Haha okay wow that'd be awesome! I hope that works out cause it sounds epic! Well you can buy spare tyre covers. They're these covers you pull on over the spare tyre to keep it dry and protected. Check your Auto-parts store. They should have em! Or ebay :)
This is one of the more interesting clips I have seen on youtube.I believe the tire rubber is working as a passive radiator with low resonation frequency so it makes a nice bass as an outcome. I wonder why nobody came up with this before...
Is this the new MCM garage/shop?!?! I am glad you all got one finally. About time. I know the feeling of people dropping by and harassing. I am no where near as big as you all, but apparently people still like to find you! Bars are going on my shops windows next!
You guys rock! You are clearly not in it for the money, just out to have a good time. I have a ton of respect for your content, so buy yourselves some beer! You've more than earned it. Keep up the MAAAD work!!
I'm super stoked to see the guys going NFG and seeing what will work for cheap. Right on guys! There is already a dude posting on my local VW forum saying he will build these for 100$. LOL
I love all these videos but this is a fact idea, subs need a specific internal volume and shape for there enclosure, this will sound crap compared to how the same sub will sound in a properly built enclosure
Cool. I agree with you, I see what they were going for but honestly I'd just spend the money to design/build my own box and not have it look like it's recycled from garbage
I've always built my own boxes, 99.9% of people buy generic pre made boxes and just stick there sub in and that's it, I build my boxes to the exact internal dimensions and seal them so well that there's absolutely no leakage at all, they are painted inside and all joints are silicone sealed as well as round the sub mateing area too, they are 100% air tight. as you probably know the air acts as a brake in sealed boxes and prevents over excursion at high power levels as well as reducing cone flapping and producing a tighter sound
Dylan 'Robin' Harwood That's terrible logic to buy a tool. Ohh this $30 drill does the same thing as this $100 one. Boys buy cheap tools men buy tools that they can pass down to their boys.
John Smith Do you know what price/performace even means? Haha. I'm saying they're the best quality for the price. I could go to my local B&Q and buy a £15 hand drill or I could buy one that costs £150 however maybe the one that costs £80 or £90 is the best for the price, longest battery life, high torque etc. I'm saying buy the one that YOU trust. Okay, sure maybe you've not had the best time with Ryobi. I'm not trying to argue here, I'm just saying MAYBE Ryobi are the best value for them in AUS. Also, they're not mechanics by trade, they don't own a massive workshop and work of cars day in and day out. They are acoustic engineers, as you've heard in this very video. If they were mechanics they'd be using the highest quality tools around, however for their cars they probably don't mind having a slighty sub-par tool.
Dylan 'Robin' Harwood I know what price/performance is but here in the states ryobi and black and decker are the crappiest low budget tools they make. The best mid range tools here are rigid.
AugmentedRealities Or they just didn't crank it up so much it turns inside out. You do not have to have have it to move like it's going to blow itself up. Thats not how acoustics work. Not to mention that particular song is not bass focused. I have been installing car audio for years. You do not want a speaker going crazy when you play music. Thats how they wear out fast. Quality of music is not the same as quantity of movement.
yeah maybe they didn't turn it up much. I never said anything about quality. Besides, quality would only show in the video according to the quality of the camera mic so there's no point. Also there's no way that $15 tire setup is going to sound quality, they made this video as a joke. So make that cheap speaker dance. The speaker moving it what it's designed to do, especially low end drivers. If it's a quality speaker and amp it wont ware it out. I've designed and built speaker boxes, crossovers and amps. Still got drivers from the 90's that have had years of hard work. Still going strong as if they're new. Quality speakers can go loud (to a point) if you know what you're doing and use quality equipment.
I was making a broader statement about the quality, not referring to this video. I also do filming and film editing. I know this all to well. One of my cameras sucks at recording audio. In my experience with installing car audio for music the more you have room for speaker movement (up and down/ in and out) gives it more ability to produce a quality sound. People that want their speakers to jump like jackrabbits when they power them get a far worse quality due to the speaker being closer to its limits.
I have literally been scrolling through the comments to see if anyone else picked up on this. I would have thought they knew the difference between mdf and plywood, unless they were trying to encourage users to make it with mdf.
just ordered my sub to give it a shot for myself! thank you guys for giving me a use for this seemingly useless tire that's been on my back porch for the past 3 years. and for the bad ass project/ experience!
My nephew wants me to help him install a sub, might try something similar to this, but perhaps using a rim wheel for rigidity. Very creative and space saving idea.
the density of the rubber compound is the reason it sounds pretty good I reckon and it would reduce reflections. If you used a heavier tyre, it should sound even better.
Using a tire as a box is actually a good idea. The sound deadening the tire provides means you don't need as much air space inside. With good enough sound deadening in a box you can make it much smaller without losing sound quality.
Just some improvement ideas: Use the cars spare wheels holder system to keep wheel in place, so its harder to steal and does not fly into your head, if you have accident. Use some 2x2 or other wood to make connectors between back plate screws and front plate screws, so tire wont expand via pressure (with bigger and better subs) and also give screws something more than rubber to bite on. Filling the compartment with old pillow fills and lining sides with mattress foam will give your "box" more space if sub needs more space than is available. Use some spare wood and sturdy mesh to give sub room to move under the trunk mattress. Also making hole in mattress helps sub to move air more freely, thought dont let anything sharp fall into cone trough mesh. To be absolutely teenager this also gives you good place to secure your LED lighting so your trunk can be turned a disco! This is kinda old idea to put sub into spare tire, but its still cool and functional.. depending your use of the car.. and if you dont have ever tire puncture! :D
As a electronic musician, I Would love to see you guys do some vids on audio mods and generally put your acoustic and production skills up for us to enjoy on YT. Great vid btw :)
I love this show. Congrats! This is the most hipster subwoofer box I've ever seen. It's so practical I did it myself and have good results. Awesome! xD Greetings from Mexico.

So haggard
haggard sucks
+Johhny Shackleforth do you even know what haggard means m8?
Go check +HaggardGarage for , haggard stuff lol

this can be put away easy under the boot floor
stanced Jake I'd rather have a spare tyre.
Leestons I have the spare tire, plus a full sized spare that I always change out when I buy new tires...before they're worthless, lol.
According to MCM taking out your spare is "full JDM spec"...
CReadiusPro That really made me laugh. I'm sure it was a joke.

I love all these videos but this is a fact idea, subs need a specific internal volume and shape for there enclosure, this will sound crap compared to how the same sub will sound in a properly built enclosure
Did you even watch the video? They specifically talk about that. The whole idea is to sound decent for cheap
Yes I did, I was just reiterating that it's crucial to have the right size
Does painting the inside actually do anything? I've never done that. I do love sealed boxes though, especially for rock music.
That was the definition of a "mighty car mod", great work guys looking forward to seeing the cars.
now this the shit I subbed fo'
i mounted a 10" sub in the back of my of my old school mini with a spare tyre ,, naturally it fits perfect . this was 7+ years ago worked mint
are you sponsored by ryobi?
if not why not??? lol!!!
Ryobi tools suck ass there is definitely a partnership.
They're probably the best price/performance in AUS. In the UK the best price/performance is Black and Decker.
Dylan 'Robin' Harwood That's terrible logic to buy a tool. Ohh this $30 drill does the same thing as this $100 one. Boys buy cheap tools men buy tools that they can pass down to their boys.
John Smith
Do you know what price/performace even means?
Dylan 'Robin' Harwood
I know what price/performance is but here in the states ryobi and black and decker are the crappiest low budget tools they make. The best mid range tools here are rigid.
I like the new shelving in the shop. It's looking like a professional shop. Marty and Moog are becoming pros.
was the sub even plugged in when they "tested" it?
TheRattleSnake3145 Yea you can see it moving if you watch close enough.
Brian Tolliver not enough wattage though.
Glad you guys are sticking with the budget projects. Thanks for this
I would just put this in the house
Moog handled that drill like a professional. good job guys this is one creative DIY's.
Thats Plywood not MDF youve totally botched the acoustics.
I have literally been scrolling through the comments to see if anyone else picked up on this. I would have thought they knew the difference between mdf and plywood, unless they were trying to encourage users to make it with mdf.
Kieren Smith Oh maybe you know. I don't know what MDF is versus plywood.
***** Ah thank you.
+DementedCaliber no, that was definitely plywood. Not that there is anything wrong with using good plywood.
Yea ...all those finely tuned acoustics..
"You can use a circular saw but only if you're really skilled" I see what you did there. HAHA. Love MCM.
What about old cars that the spare tyre goes under the carriage/bonnet instead of IN the bonnet?
Well, if you're gonna do the same install, then the sub will be outside of the car, facing down the road..
so dont do this in that kind of a car?
Spitfire83 Would actually be pretty hilarious.
Ahmad Fareez i'd still do it, let there be bass.
Ahmad Fareez Then everyone will be hearing what you are listening.
I think this will be huge in the jdm enthusiast world I expect in a few years to see this on a massive scale
that was plywood not mdf btw
just ordered my sub to give it a shot for myself! thank you guys for giving me a use for this seemingly useless tire that's been on my back porch for the past 3 years. and for the bad ass project/ experience!
now to just find a use for this s2000 rim that'll be left behind:p
+James Griffin ebay-?
+Carbon 12 amazon. 30 dollars for a Pyle 12"
the sub wasnt even moving.. lol.. no amp??
think so.... this is lame... no amp... not in a spare tyre space... no extrusion....
righto son lets see your awesome idea and show us the cool setup that you put in your mums car
+troy bennington excuse me? i did spl competition 10 years ago troy.. won some prizes.. mom doesn't have a license...
Did you not hear them repeat over and over that they weren't being serious about this?
So good to see you guys getting back to mods you can do in an afternoon, loved this video!

You guys jeep the smile on my face everyday. For a terminal brain cancer pstint that is awesome!,,,
How could you guys! Some starving kids in Africa could of used that tyre to drift!
genuinely useful, cheap, diy mighty car mods I looove it
That's gonna sound like shit..v
your attitude is shit
Joe Parsons
You are shit
jonathanmellqvist2 *You’re
Danny 3001 You are aware that "You're" is a contraction of "You are", right? What Jonathan said is completely and totally correct.
+wing_nut_101 probably intended for the 'your' guy..JP
My nephew wants me to help him install a sub, might try something similar to this, but perhaps using a rim wheel for rigidity. Very creative and space saving idea.
Finally! A new video. I have been expecting you...
the density of the rubber compound is the reason it sounds pretty good I reckon and it would reduce reflections. If you used a heavier tyre, it should sound even better.
YYESSS!! YOU GUYS ARE ALIVE!!! I was worried there for a hot second...
We need more frequent MCM episodes, who's with me!?
MCM in the natural environment. Love it.
good old days.
That's pretty sick, my RSX-S has a Bose sub built into the spare tire straight from factory.
give us a tour of your new shed, it would make the viewers feel like they understand the new season better as well as where u do your work
I'm an engineer and this isn't the worst idea I've ever seen. Sometimes you have to try out crazy ideas to find something good.
Been waiting for some new vids I WATCH ALL, Keep the MAAAAD guys!
Seeing more audio creations from you guys ain't a bad idea, mighty woofer mods
Using a tire as a box is actually a good idea. The sound deadening the tire provides means you don't need as much air space inside. With good enough sound deadening in a box you can make it much smaller without losing sound quality.
This goes to show how smart Marty and Moog are! This was fun Good job guys!
Just some improvement ideas:
Use the cars spare wheels holder system to keep wheel in place, so its harder to steal and does not fly into your head, if you have accident.
Mighty Car Mods Its good to see you guys again
I actually di this years ago, except we filled the tire with cement and used PVC for a side port and it really did sound awesome.
You could sit it in your car in the open, and if you need the extra storage, unplug it and stow it in the spare tyre slot! Badabing!
I love this show. Congrats! This is the most hipster subwoofer box I've ever seen. It's so practical I did it myself and have good results. Awesome! xD Greetings from Mexico.
Awesome New but old school. MCM back to its roots bang on guys Thanks
it's funny. every time I think to myself when will mcm have a new episode it comes out the same day
