"Cause that costs money, and someone else does it, and that's not DIY." Finally someone who understands me! Great editing, perfect background music, great end product, great video! Keep up the good work!
No they are great as they are, everybody thinks that copying the original topgear with some great local figures will make it good but this is not true, MCM is MCM and TG is TG, having local TGs for US and AU is complete BS. Apparently this is better then TG.
I'll be honest i miss these simple old videos. Your high production quality of your new stuff is outstanding, but this is where it all began, this is what started my love affair with MCM. moog, you are so sarcastic in your earlier stuff, bring some of that back.
Instead of using masking tape to stop spraying the tires, try putting playing cards around the entire way between the tire and wheel, much quicker and works fantastically :)
If you deflate the tire, itll make it easier to get the painters tape and newspaper down there so you can guarantee no paint will get on the tire. Then just reflate the tire once you put the masking around it. It's your choice though. Not mandatory.
Hey man, I did exactly what they did in this video. I sanded the original coating down to bare aluminum, primed and repainted them black with a can. The looked great for a season but with rough gritty streets they didn't last long. The initial results are great but don't expect a factory durable finish. Hope this helps. All the best.
Like they said, prep work is everything - but so is the follow through... I've had Dupli-painted wheels for multiple years and they still look as good as they did when I first painted them. Before even riding them I let everything cure for 5 days before buffing/waxing them to add that final level of protection :) The one thing I'd highly recommend that's not mentioned in this video is using Etching Primer prior to Filler Primer, as well as Primer Sealer prior to Base Coats.
dude your car just reminds me that my first car from my dad, it is a 91 legacy sedan, just so much fun back in the old day with that car. nice job and nice car.
yes, but like most metals you need an etch primer first. Its usually slightly more acidic and actually roughens the surface up a little bit when applied to help it stick. I know that die-cast model cars are etched primed with nitric acid (or can be) just dont use something caustic on aluminium... explosive caustic gasses are released
I want to actually paint the tires. Not the rims. Is there a way for me to paint the tires purple? I was looking for purple tires online, but they don't exist.
3M sells wet-or-dry 600 and 800grit sandpaper (just put my rims on filler-primer 5 minutes ago, not gonna wet-sand, just dry) just keep in mind that what you want is a uniform finish, so no need to go berzerk on your rims with the sandpaper! 2 coats of filler-primer, sand with 600, 2 coats of paint, then clear (0-2 coats) depending on whether you want matte of glossy finish! Good luck
You can fix runs in base but you need to sand them down with a proper grit sandpaper. If you wet sand base coat it'll give it less of the ripply powder coat effect and more of a solid plated or mirror type finish. You can make plain base coat shine entirely on it's own with some proper wet sanding and patience, still clear coating is necessary to protect your wheels and will give it an even higher gloss finish.
Guys, just to make it clear, the paint does NOT need to be sanded back completely as the basecoat will hit the original paint. You just need to sand it with some 240 grit to make a surface that is smooth, but rough enough for the paint to be able to sink in and stay on. Hope this helps :)
An easy tip for covering the tires is using a deck of cards. They're easy to arrange around the rim edge and will cover the tire well enough (unless you can't aim your spray :P)
The only thing you neglected to mention or use. Were strainers for the pint used in the touch up gun.You need to strain the paint, because anything in it will show up in the paint job plus it can clog the tip. Most places will give them to you free when you buy your paint.Other than that, excellent video.
K, I like the Subaru gold rim thing and I am looking for gold rims for my Soob. They did need to be painted though. I'll give you that. You could have accented the same gold in other places on the car to make it "Pop". Would have been really cool. Course, it won't help you not blend in so well anymore. LOL. Love the show guys...
I HAVE A TIP TO SHARE!!!! I've painted my tailgate (yes I drive a dodge ram) using methods and ideas from this video. In the video they say that you can be heavy with filler primer. Just to clarify you HAVE TO treat it like a paint NOT bog/body filler. The filler primer dries within ten minutes as normal spray paint does, but that doesn't mean you can throw it on heavy to the point where u get runs. You should throw on many many many layers and sand it back with 400-800-1200 grit sand paper, but do it layer by layer, don't try to lay down more than 1mm at a time; otherwise you get paint bubbles and it won't dry properly when you go to sand it back, creating more problems! Thanks MCM don't stop doing what your doing!!!
If the rims are already a solid colour with no flaws like the ones you used, i imagine you'd still have to sand don to the bear metal before applying a new colour right?
Do you mean wheel weights? You need them because no wheel is completely round. So to reduce road vibrations due to non-circular wheels, the weights will help to balance out that weight. Every wheel will need to be balanced...
If you want to paint your wheels black, use duplicolor 1200 F high heat paint. That stuff is bullet proof. Painted my exhaust manifold heatshield and never peeled once. Also scrubbed the paint hard with various different styles of cloth when it got dirty and its still in 100% condition. Combine that with some plasti dip silver metalizer and it will looks stunning. Gives it a nice metallic shine, although not sure how well it will stick to the paint.
Sweet video guys. Wish I had seen it before I tried painting my wheels last time. Perhaps I wouldn't have failed so badly! At first I said, "what's wrong with gold rims? And they're going to paint match?!" But that paint match looks awesome. Never thought I'd like that. I think I'll skip the match though on my blue Subaru! Aaand off to watch more MCM videos!
Awesome Moog, you’re the first person I have heard in a long time use the term “mad” as an adjective for wild, or wicked cool. I say that like that all the time. Come get some Catspit~! ☠
It is very nice video .Even if you were to plastidip these wheels, you would still need to do all the prep work, use a filler primer, a base coat (plastidip) and then the plastidip glossifier. However, when you have the method in corbandy car sprayer crusher you'll find an easy system that will work whenever you like.
Quick Tip; Instead of masking the tires, get some index cards and stick them between the rim and the tire and do this all the way around the tire. It will be high enough so you don't have to cover the entire tire with newspaper and will still allow for you to paint the rim.
Best video available, especially the ideas how to repair car paint scratch. Another resource I also found helpful for spray paint car rims was moorack car spray miracle - it should be on Google if you need it
the base coat is the actual color itself, the primer color doesnt matter unless ur primer is black and ur base is yellow or white or something light like that :)
5:43 When im painting my rim more than one color or not painting all of it and I dont want paint to get on the tires- I do this. I use vaseline and apply it where I dont want the paint to go. Same with Grill etc. All you do is wipe and wash it off after it dries.
No, u will need to get caliper/valve cover paint. Caliper paints have higher heat resistance, if your dosent have enough heat resistance it will get flaky and come off.
I paint wheels all day, 5 days a week, Mag-it wheels on goldcoast, mate for a garage job you done better than most, at least u put primer on them and sanded good shit👍
love the video! im really considering doing this to my '07 4 door jeep wrangler unlimited. 1. did u use flat black or more of a matte finish? 2. what are the chances of scratching off the paint when you tighten up the lugs? any info would be great. great tutorial - thanks for sharing :)
Long time MCMs fan. Wanted a quick wheel painting tutorial and knew even historic footage such as this would be trustworthy :)
Yeeep 🤣 I watch their 10-14 year vids heaps
Painting stuff is cool.
+customspraymods That cameo appearance!
+ED S lol
+customspraymods oh my god, i just realised hahaha! maaad!
+customspraymods

+customspraymods holy fuck lol ive been starting to watch your videos as ive started painting more
"You can't put gold rims on a subaru"
Ignores every single blue Impreza with gold wheels that have ever existed lel
I'd go as far as to say that a subaru is the only car gold rims can go on
This is the stuff that got me into cars.
"Cause that costs money, and someone else does it, and that's not DIY." Finally someone who understands me! Great editing, perfect background music, great end product, great video! Keep up the good work!
Moog: The coke years
did you mean: "birth-present"?
I love his energy 😂
2019?
Anyone go through their old videos
Yeah, it's surprising that they don't put tyre so small on their wheels that they look like they're about to explode in every one of their cars.
I do, I just realized that's the guy from custom spray mod.
🙋♂️
Yeah good ol days aha👍👍
yeah me too
you guys should do Top Gear Australia
Yes!
hell yes!!
No they are great as they are, everybody thinks that copying the original topgear with some great local figures will make it good but this is not true, MCM is MCM and TG is TG, having local TGs for US and AU is complete BS.
Apparently this is better then TG.
33maraba but then we won't have MCM anymore :(
OMG yesssss
Subaru wheels shouldn't be gold? Subaru wheels are supposed to be gold.... That's why they come gold
but they look stupid unless on a dark black car
Yous Uck Subaru
Could you Google the definition of sarcasm for me?
I'll be honest i miss these simple old videos. Your high production quality of your new stuff is outstanding, but this is where it all began, this is what started my love affair with MCM. moog, you are so sarcastic in your earlier stuff, bring some of that back.
Instead of using masking tape to stop spraying the tires, try putting playing cards around the entire way between the tire and wheel, much quicker and works fantastically :)
Or index cards
Yup, I've done the card trick myself, works awesome!
IcyThaneProductions or speeding tickets! LOL
GoofyDaGoofGoofTV - -That would work....provided one gets caughts for speeding... haha.
Cool trick???.... not magic though is it mate...
If you deflate the tire, itll make it easier to get the painters tape and newspaper down there so you can guarantee no paint will get on the tire. Then just reflate the tire once you put the masking around it. It's your choice though. Not mandatory.
9:19 that color looks super cool
I just noticed at 4:56 he is waving at his shadow XD
hey its the guy from custom spray mods
Hey man, I did exactly what they did in this video. I sanded the original coating down to bare aluminum, primed and repainted them black with a can. The looked great for a season but with rough gritty streets they didn't last long. The initial results are great but don't expect a factory durable finish. Hope this helps. All the best.
I find it easier to partially submerge my cans in a bucket of warm water. :)
You can leave them like it while doing the prep.
One of my favorite videos! 9 years later...
"Matching tires and lungs is not a good look"
I really miss my RS liberty. fantastic car. great video! I always find myself going back through your videos.
Hates on STI in 2011,
Loves it in 2017,
MCM Logic.
Like they said, prep work is everything - but so is the follow through...

I liked the gold, only Subos can pull it off imo
And R34
+Jordan Frankish and gt-86
Gold wheels are for muslims!
+FukeU1248 u freakin serious
+FukeU1248 hahaha
Adding a racing kit on that car will look much even better with those wheels, but great job guys. I learnt so much from you both.
Gold rims. EPIC on a Subaru WRX, not that Subaru. Stick with black
STI WRX
mr .boggle Yep, running the same rims on my V7 STi
looks mad
+Moon Soon stick with black? or stick with BLAAAAACK? there's a big difference between the two.
and on a is200
I have a black is300, and I reckon it could pull it off, but I think I'd rather have black on black personally :P
love coming back watching these 10 year old videos
Swear to god the guy he bought the paint from is from the customspraymods channel
Where has this channel been all my life?! Really enjoying the Marty Car Moogs show. Keep it up!
So how many HP does the red caliper paint add? And is it necessary to get the full HP from the wheel paint?
300 HP and the black rims added 500 more HORSEPOWER!!!!!!
+Tyler James Newton 25 kW is equal to 33.5 HP
Sadpants McGee No offense, but was that the question?
Tyler James Newton Yes. You asked how many HP you get from painting your calipers red. 25 kW converts to 33.5 HP.
Sadpants McGee I don't speak Russian.
dude your car just reminds me that my first car from my dad, it is a 91 legacy sedan, just so much fun back in the old day with that car. nice job and nice car.
that Silvia in the back😍😍😍😍😍
yes, but like most metals you need an etch primer first. Its usually slightly more acidic and actually roughens the surface up a little bit when applied to help it stick. Good looking bloke
You guys have come a long way. Love it.
I want to actually paint the tires. Not the rims. Is there a way for me to paint the tires purple? I was looking for purple tires online, but they don't exist.
PizzaAssassin26 lmfao im dead
Good thing you're trollin, cause that's just flat out stupid. Thank god for WOT!
You can do like a white wall with rubber paint but its expensive and need prof to do it
closest i could find www.alibaba.com/product-detail/all-sized-color-car-tyre-green_722065122.html
just spray the tires every morning and night :)
I already know how to paint wheels. I just watch this to watch MCM when there isn't a new episode. Lol
Ok
Thanks guys, that's the best video I have seen about painting my wheels.
is it just me, or is the guy at 2:38 another youtuber that does painting videos ?
3M sells wet-or-dry 600 and 800grit sandpaper (just put my rims on filler-primer 5 minutes ago, not gonna wet-sand, just dry)

Good luck
I don't know I think that a blue subaru with gold rims can look awesome
IDK maybe lmao
They break everything down in a simplistic way. I love it
Why not listing the stuff needed in description?
Because that makes too much sense duh
+tmxseven Wheels, sandpaper, paint, clearcoat, time, and patience.
You can fix runs in base but you need to sand them down with a proper grit sandpaper. If you wet sand base coat it'll give it less of the ripply powder coat effect and more of a solid plated or mirror type finish. You can make plain base coat shine entirely on it's own with some proper wet sanding and patience, still clear coating is necessary to protect your wheels and will give it an even higher gloss finish.
red calipers frack thats at least an extra 40hp not to mention getting the ladies wet!!
can i sandblast calisper and just spray can it?? for quick way?
LungHotBox 420 I think you can but it will kind of fade over time and won’t have as good a result as doing it properly but it should work
@2:15. It's Dave from custom spray mods!
That's the exact car my great grandma owned and she's in her 80s
so what? not everyone can or wants to buy mustang or a vette^^
pretty sure this is the same car he did the quarter mile in 11.9 seconds, can guarantee your grandmas can't do that! haha
Haha yea
Dude your grandma had an RS Liberty Turbo? Sick
I know bought it brand new of the show room floor in 93'. It got totaled and had about 100k on the clock. Which was really good and no rust!
I've only just started watching these but propes for the Legacy RS Turbo and the good ol' Scooby wheels. Loving it
Black wheels? When you want to be original, just like everyone else.
Was looking up how to paint rims and this gem popped up I forgot about this Subie build!
"MARTIN LIKES IT BOTH WAYS"
AHAHAHHAHAAAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH LITERALLY PISSED MYSELF
9 years after seeing this episode, finally got myself some Subaru gc8 rims to paint!
Didnt look that crap to me.
you're wrong. if moog said they are bad then they are bad.
moog is love moog is life 2015.
thanks its kinda good to know that i dont need to by different or more paint too. hopefully i can do this soon enough before summer comes around
Who’s watching in 2019?
I'll practice on my OEM 14" wheels for my civic. Thanks guys!! Subscribed.
Marty you should do a vid on using Plasti Dip
@DJCarv8 you want to put on atleast 3 because you want to slowly build up the layers so you do not get runs in the paint
How to legally make you car into a convertible?
Don't convert cars into convertibles unless you don't plan on keeping it for very long.
Moshing Bird I meant with your current car
Joshua Whiteley just don't do it, it will never end well.
Ok, thanks
Joshua Whiteley no problem
old school how to videos - still useful! Thanks guys, your work will live on forever :)
Love the video, but I'll be sticking with Plasti Dip
Not just the wheel stem, there is various amounts of rubber across the tyre. One side may weigh more than the other etc.
Marty looks like Ted Cruz
Oh shit...
Aka: the zodiac killer
Actually, ted cruz looks like marty
Is Ted Cruz a junkie :O
Don't insult Marty like that. He didn't do anything to deserve it.
Guys, just to make it clear, the paint does NOT need to be sanded back completely as the basecoat will hit the original paint. You just need to sand it with some 240 grit to make a surface that is smooth, but rough enough for the paint to be able to sink in and stay on. Hope this helps :)
they should have went for other colour that grey looks rather shit
Tim Lake
oh sorry I wasnt born in english speaking language fucking grammar nazi
Tim Lake
no youre a nazi
Tim Lake
more like hail grammar
+QurttoRco I also wasn't born in English
Took after this video and did my rims the same colour, looks fantastic on my jetta. Much better than the curb rash and scratches the stock rims had!
I have a Subaru Impreza RS. I could have painted wheels Gold, but did Black instead. Great Vid, was a lot of help.
Wow, difference is night and day. Looks great.
An easy tip for covering the tires is using a deck of cards. They're easy to arrange around the rim edge and will cover the tire well enough (unless you can't aim your spray :P)
MCM ad for an MCM video... perfect!
I was wondering when you were going to mention putting the weights inside the rims. thats just something i'd never go without.
I like how that S15 is just chilling in the background! lol
The only thing you neglected to mention or use. Were strainers for the pint used in the touch up gun.You need to strain the paint, because anything in it will show up in the paint job plus it can clog the tip. Most places will give them to you free when you buy your paint.Other than that, excellent video.

I think it is time for a new set of these types of videos from the boys
I remember watching this the day it came out. Now it has 1.5 million views. Maaad!
I HAVE A TIP TO SHARE!!!! I've painted my tailgate (yes I drive a dodge ram) using methods and ideas from this video. In the video they say that you can be heavy with filler primer. Gives it a nice metallic shine, although not sure how well it will stick to the paint.
gotta love moog's enthusiasm
Sweet video guys. Wish I had seen it before I tried painting my wheels last time. Perhaps I wouldn't have failed so badly! At first I said, "what's wrong with gold rims? And they're going to paint match?!" But that paint match looks awesome. Never thought I'd like that. I think I'll skip the match though on my blue Subaru! Aaand off to watch more MCM videos!
Yeah I understand that now. This was the first video I ever saw of these guys and they are awesome and funny. Thanks though.
9:19 you feeling alright buddy?
Quick Tip;
Instead of masking the tires, get some index cards and stick them between the rim and the tire and do this all the way around the tire. It will be high enough so you don't have to cover the entire tire with newspaper and will still allow for you to paint the rim.
Best video available, especially the ideas how to repair car paint scratch. Another resource I also found helpful for spray paint car rims was moorack car spray miracle - it should be on Google if you need it
My friend is obsessed with it and after the winter his paint is always chipped and looks awful lol. its fine if you want the matte look
the base coat is the actual color itself, the primer color doesnt matter unless ur primer is black and ur base is yellow or white or something light like that :)
I've had these set of rims on my bugeye wrx not too long ago and I painted them almost the exact same color
5:43 When im painting my rim more than one color or not painting all of it and I dont want paint to get on the tires- I do this. I use vaseline and apply it where I dont want the paint to go. Same with Grill etc. All you do is wipe and wash it off after it dries.
Gotta love the old MCM black on black yarns portion of the video
I like how Dave from custom spray mods made a quick appearance.
No, u will need to get caliper/valve cover paint. Caliper paints have higher heat resistance, if your dosent have enough heat resistance it will get flaky and come off.
2:36 Its the guy who does the Custom Spray Mods channel!
I paint wheels all day, 5 days a week, Mag-it wheels on goldcoast, mate for a garage job you done better than most, at least u put primer on them and sanded good shit👍
I miss these kind of episodes :/
love the video! im really considering doing this to my '07 4 door jeep wrangler unlimited. 1. did u use flat black or more of a matte finish? 2. what are the chances of scratching off the paint when you tighten up the lugs? any info would be great.
great tutorial - thanks for sharing :)
nice video guys, you answered all my questions.
I am british (living in aus though)...and the gold rims with blue body is considered a very applaudable style on the british roads...
