is there anything Zach cant do? like seriously I'm binging the Money Pit playlist and this guy friggen does EVERYTHING, seriously hiring this guy was the best thing donut has ever done ever
My dad owned an audio shop at the time. Small town, less than 5,000 people year round. He installed 3 per day on average not including stereos. Made about 6 figures doing it.
I think that this is my favorite video from Donut so far. I still have a lot to watch, but this one is very easy to follow almost as a tutorial while being chill, funny, and engaging. I feel like Im in the garage with these guys and as someone who doesnt have people around who work on cars, this is incredible to experience. Thanks for making me feel like I belong in the projects🤘
So i'll add a couple of extra points here: 1. You should always go for an amp that is slightly more powerful than the sub because that will actually factor into how precisely your sub will kick. If the amp has a power reserve, then it wont be streched close to its limits and will hold the sub in place. You can always dial the amp down if you are getting distortions 2. Its nice that amp draw was explained but its also a good point to also check out how many amps worth of fuses are in your actual amp. 3. Line adapters/converters or more known as High-to-low converters are an option to add that needed RCA connection to stock headunits but almost always come with worse sound quality because you are splicing into speaker signals. 4. Theres also a 3rd type of enclosure: Bandpass 5. Huge props on actually knowing and explaining that enclosures are built to car parameters and volume needed for sub parameters and also that the the length of the port has an effect on frequency response. Also pro tip: If your enclosure is shallow you can often win some port length by going L shape. 6. Building a proper upto spec enclosure is always better than stock enclosures because you maximize the effectiveness of your sub. With some subs the difference is less noticeable with some its alot more noticeable. 7. I would've personally gone for a more directed sub + port direction into the cabin as currently the setup will be very close to the trunk and possibly some sound will get lost there. If it were built as directed into the cabin the result while inside would most probably be better. But anyway you did a nice job and i see you've done your research.
Bryton Guernsey tbh i noticed the awfully low eensitivity on that woofer when he was showing specs but other than that personally have 0 experience with Kicker. I’ve sold and installed Pioneer, Alpine, Hertz, Audison, Vibe (along with sub brands like Fli and FU), Morel, Focal, DLS, Magnat, Rockford Fosgate, SPL Dynamics and personally use DD Audio subs paired with a Hertz monoblock.
Sadly he hacked his port tube, the tuned frequency is higher than expected, and you can hear the sub bottoming out. He used the shortest dimension for the tube (I would have gone the longest pointing to the cabin) which really limited him. And a solid mdf board construction sucks vs a thin mdf fiberglass laminate. You can get the same internal volume in a smaller, stronger, and much lighter enclosure that has much better muted resonant frequencies.
I would get it but not with the dct. Don’t get me wrong. The automatic trans in the veloster seems great as far as autos go. But rolling gears on my own is my favorite way to drive or ride(motorcycle wise lol). And I live on Long Island so the roads and traffic here is horrendous and manual blowsssss a lot of the time but to me it’s worth the frustration haha. That’s just me though. I totally understand why people would rather have a dct for their daily driver
I’ve wanted the veloster n the 2019s are getting around 23 grand but that’s not performance pack but I would rather the manual I’ll probably get one around may
He even measured the inside sound level of the diy sub with the trunk open which definitely makes a difference in air- and so sound-pressure. Measuring it with closed trunk like the kicker one it’d probably kick even more..
My F150 would sound better and louder if I rolled both windows down halfway. Sucked during winter and rain though. In a hatchback, facing the speakers up makes a huge difference as well. I have not had any vehicles with trunks so I cannot say if the direction they face (or the port) makes a difference.

Good video, I've built a heap of enclosures over the years and the explanation here was simple and easy to follow. I'd add a few small points; 1. When using MDF, always wear a mask when cutting or sanding. MDF is made with some pretty nasty chemicals and you don't want to be inhaling the dust. 2. If you are running power through your car (in the case of a battery in the front) it's a good idea to use some plastic conduit around the cable to protect it from damage. It's an extra level of protection against something going wrong. 3. Best practice is to run the power cable the opposite side to your fuel lines. Hope those tips help anyone looking to build their own box or do their own install. Well worth doing!
I love this! sub sound quality relies a lot on the box rather than the sub itself. Having a good sub and amp helps a lot but it can all be wasted on poor air flow. I used to work at a small speaker shop on the west coast during the early 2000s and we hosted what we called a “box class”. The box class would give customers an idea why we were always trying to sell them a nice box rather than an expensive sub. During the box class we put a small 8” sub with proper porting and flow against a high end 18” woofer in a shit box and the improvements in the low and med range where insane!
This is so true, building a good box is alpha and omega for optimal subwoofer performance. I was struggling to find the right volume and porting for my Hertz Energy 12" subwoofer, kept experimenting with different porting and stuff. I just couldn't get it to play "right", it was outperformed by my two olde Hertz Energy 8" subwoofers! Welp, I decided to give it one last try with a sealed box instead and that gave me a huge surprise, it not only played much nicer, it was actually siginifcantly louder and more punchy. It went from meh performance to almost too much. I did of course brace the box and made it really strong and completely air tight, it's surprisingly heavy for it's size.
*This is what i did for a living back in the 80's and early 90's the pointers were ok but there are things you didn't cover that the average person trying this for the first time would never understand. FIRST a sealed box does not sound "muted" it's a controlled pressure or SPL (sound pressure level) that it creates inside the box and how it (depending on how it is mounted and which way it faces inside the car that makes ALL the difference. Ported boxes are for people that want a bunch of speaker inside their car / truck and don't have the room to have the correct airspace for all of the speakers they want you can tune a ported box for deeper bass but it's still not a controlled bass sound. You ONLY get that in a sealed box as long as your box is the proper size a sealed box will hit harder and stronger than any ported or banpass box ever will. The best you can do is build a sealed box in a place that you don't see it so that no one gets the idea of relieving you of it. in your case with the 240 the best thing you could have done is build the sub into a box under the package tray tilted slightly toward the rear of your car. building it in the deck of your car you would get a stronger reflective bass sound that hits harder and cleaner than any ported box ever could. I have heard some clean banpass boxes that sound almost as clean and good as sealed boxes but none that perform as well without cooking your sub's voice coils*
Daaaamn that ad on the 2021 Veloster N was so good. The buff guys are your best recent addition to the Donut Media Crew BTW. Edit : And Zac always killing it every video, thanks a lot
That's why they add all that filler in the box, its supposedly simulates the box being a little bit bigger, so you can undersize it to save room and material and add that stuff to help, I would still just build the right size box over adding that stuff
I appreciate how normal his garage is, like random supplies along the walls and his golf clubs right next to the work table. Shows how approachable a lot of the work he’s done on the series really is.
@ItsYaBoi ErrSkinnYP3n15 I know, but like how are there no seams? Like the carpet is 1 dimensional, it's flat. How did he manage to wrap it around a rectangular subwoofer without the seams showing or folds or the carpet overlapping? Or is it overlapping on the bottom where we can’t see?
@@phantommedia9964 the seams are on the flat surface, both ends and bottom. If you look closely at a box in store you'll see. It takes some experience and craftsmanship to build a decent box yourself. I've been building my own since high school
Really wish they would have explained that the gain is not a volume knob and shown how to set it correctly with either an dmm or an o-scope. You can tell he has made a couple of boxes before.
It prob does but not nothing insane it looks to be a "10 kicker L5" I used to like kicker when they was actually really good. Now I use Skar and Sundown orion mostly. And some old ass Rockford Hex power 10"s and 18" and 2 12hex punch's. Then I got the old audiobahn subs remember those old flame subs lol. I got 4 12" natural sounds which ain't bad but they ain't the best but look good though n still in mint condition. Then I got 2 12" immortals which are bad ass those hit hard hard. And then I got 4 12" audiobahn compression serries which are 3k a pop n still run like new and are hella loud. Which I don't use em anymore. But got em. And 2 10" flame Q series that look identical to the compression subs just not as powerful. And then yesterday I picked up two aluminum x 12s which are a strange dual 6 ohm subs... They sound damn good n look good to. And then my prized subs iv had for a while which I'm actually selling are my old 15"s FI BTL ufo subs I got 2 of em in a ported box and two FI BL 15s which one has a bad coil still plays but coil is going bad. And then the 18s I got 4 of sundown X v2s which are also for sale.. and them I got 2 kicker L7 12s which I don't have a box for anymore which are supposed to be sold this Friday
Amplifier power can exceed the woofer's power handling* . It doesn't hurt to have a bit of headroom for dynamics. Also, if deciding to upgrade subs, a new amp isn't necessary. *as long as you don't turn it up to the point of distortion.
With impedance rise, that amp will never hit the rms numbers. You should always get an amp that pushes a fair amount more than the power handling of the sub. That weak amp they chose will lead to clipping and a burnt coil.
A bunch of technical errors in his script. He was reading audio terms he didn't know, some were pronounced wrong, others were explained wrong and the measurement should be at 1 watt and one meter for standard sensitivity testing. Any other measurement can be taken anywhere but should be in the same spot to be able to accurately compare similar products.
When I was in my late teens, early twenties I used to install Car stereos, speakers, amps, and subs, but I never once used any special software. I learned myself and from my friends that went to dB competitions. I don't do it anymore (much bigger and less flexible now), but I do miss the community that I used to be apart of. By the way, love your videos, they have been informative and very helpful.
To get the most out of your money when installing a system I have used five-channel amps. I currently have 4, 3 Rockford Fosgate amps, and one pioneer. These amps run from 200-250$ on amazon. In each of my cars with these amps, they power four 6.5 inch door panels, and a 10 or 12-inch sub. In my opinion this is the best bang for your buck and these are enough to shake the glass on your car.
Volume is pressure cuz sound is created by agitating molecules. The more the molecules move the greater the pressure and therefore the greater the volume.
@@tylerviirland2413 Loudness, a subjective measure, is often confused with physical measures of sound strength such as sound pressure, sound pressure level (in decibels), sound intensity or sound power.
Finally, it's great to see that the RMS power and impedance were highlighted as the real specs to pay attention too. Good job! One note on enclosures though, you forgot to mention the bandpass subwoofer enclosure. Finally you should have mentioned how dB rating works to highlight the dB gain for store bought vs custom box because 1.5dB doesn't sound very impressive until you know that for every 3dB increase it requires twice the power. So a gain of 1.5dB is very impressive actually just for a different subwoofer box. "Bandpass boxes - If you are looking for bass sounds that boom well a bandpass box is the right fit for you. It wouldn’t be wrong to say that the bandpass box is a combination of a sealed and a ported design. Here, the subwoofer is carefully kept inside the enclosure that has two chambers, out of which one is of the ported design and the other belongs to the sealed design. The sound that comes out eventually is from the ported chamber. The sound is super-loud here, which is why this enclosure is considered the best to highlight the low bass notes for hard rock, rap, and hip-hop." -Source: AudioUntapped
There are many types of bandpass enclosures. The sealed box Inside a ported box is just one type. Also know As a 4th order There are advantages and disadvantages to every enclosure type. Generally speaking most setups will have best mix of results by going ported.. Unless Ur super tight on space... Then sealed is essentially Ur only option.
I feel the need to correct this, Your sub doesnt have any output at a certain ohm load! Its the coil configuration of the sub, either a single or dual voice coil, that the impedance of that coil is dual 2 ohm. Remember, subs dont output wattage, they use it to produce sound. So a sub can be wired to anything from half ohm to 8ohms depending on coil configuration of the sub and the amps stable ohm loads
Im sure the subwoofer is a dual voice coil. In this case it has 2 voice coils at 2 ohms each. Only way to wire this as a single subwoofer is at 1 ohm or 4 ohm.
Dude this is the first money pit where I really had no idea how to do any of the stuff they do in the video and honestly man this series got like 10x better. Most of the time it was just me just being entertained but the education aspect is soooo nice
Me and my uncle built a custom sub box out of the cheapest plywood we could find (I was 16 and broke) and it turned out to sound better than most systems I've had since. Still blows my mind to this day.
100 amps fuze is 100% ok cuz its rated 100 amps for few seconds which would not be possible for this amp to achieve. This amp would draw 111 amps for 0.1 sec every few mins every few songs at most so this fuze would at most get hot but wont burn.
LMAO in high school I used to install all my classmates’ subs and audio stuff for extra money, and I thought I was doing everything right. But after watching this I realized everything I did was all wrong 😂
@@bigboij3027 well for starts they didn't build the enclosure correctly at all just guessing there was no proper calculation of port area vs cbft or port length vs cbft to determine the tuning of the enclosure. A 100 amp fuse blows at 200 amps so the one kicker sent was fine. Plus you should have used a capacitor with that amp power. Putting cotton in the box will clean the sound from the sub. More variables that you need to consider too.
well - look at the amount of fanatics that are commenting here: ""wow bro, nice work, etc". loool. since corona i realized: the most of the world population are idiots. period.
You definitely don’t need a capacitor for this kind of set up. If he wishes to pull that power more efficiently then he needs a beefier alternator and battery to do so. But most stock alts can handle roughly 1,000 watts just fine.
@@mahmoudbisharat3239 Caps aren’t bad but most guys these days running big power mainly utilize a series of high performance batteries and alternators for steadier current flow. In all honesty, I would just get a +300 amp alternator to save you the time and money rather than fiddling around with a cap. Especially if you’re just pushing below 2,000 watts.
Kicker box is using Polyfill to make the effective internal volume larger than it actually is.That's why when Zach calculated the internal volume, it was smaller than they recommend. Definitely glossed over some important info, but over all i commend you on trying to cover such a complex topic as speaker enclosure design, and make it interesting for the casual viewer. haha
At the climax of the build your sunglasses sitting on the box made me do a double take. It looked at first glance that you had two little ports pointing towards the back 😂
Great Job on the video and series! There are a few things I would like to add. 1. Find out the low end frequency range of your sub/amp. You will waste time/money If your box is tuned to 20hz (port length and width), but your audio components can’t produce that sound properly. 2. Loud doesn’t always equal great sound. Never run your system at MAX. The sound will distort and sound bad. Turn up your head unit until clipping happens, back off a little bit. Then do the same at the amp with the head unit at the spot you found. That will be your max volume setup for great sound. There are tuning mics and programs (apps) that can help if you can’t get that sweet spot by ear. 3. Try to run your power/ground opposite your speaker wires. It minimizes possible interference. I think I have watched every one of these videos. Still waiting on the turbo lol.
Old video but yeah you need to throw a 2500-3k 1 ohm amp at that sub for it to ever see the 600 watts it's rated for (I'm assuming it's a d4 which wires down to 2 ohms) ... A 3k RMS 1 ohm amp will put out approx 1500 at 2 ohms and after impedance rise the sub will see around 500-700 regularly. That 600 watts at 2 ohm amp is pushing around a measly 300 watts regularly to that sub.
One more tip: Run your power and audio cables separately. The power cables can interfere with the audio signals degrading your audio quality. My father is an electronics technician and taught me this at a young age. I personally hook up my sub systems with quick connects so they can be easily and safely removed when I need trunk space. I have the power cables connected with (can’t remember the name) the same connectors you see on forklift batteries. Audio cables have crimped ferrules, remote wire has a Deutsch connector. Every connection is safe when unplugged, even the power connector has a rubber plug to keep it from getting shorted out. I have two sub boxes with the amp attached to one of the boxes. My capacitor is hard mounted and hidden behind an access panel in the trunk.
Also keep your ground wire as short as possible.. audio wires up driver side, power wires up passenger side. If your battery is not in the trunk use a capacitor.. I have done a few different systems in my days and am itching to do one in my next car :)
Something to also keep in mind is that amp and sub manufacturers often lie about the peak power rating, just to have a big number on the box. It should be RMS * sqrt(2) but you'll often find ratings of RMS*2 or even RMS*2.25
The kicker box was smaller because it had pollyfil to help make up for more space. If you add pollyfil to the box it should improve. Also the port length is determined by the port diameter and desired tune frequency

Always got the “wondering” from other people that how I was so loud and pretty clear too. 😁 (Because I build and design my boxes) 😁
You should have used kickers rectangle port design to maximize your tuning. A full 20" port really makes the a huge difference on that Kicker Solo Baric 10" box sound. And yes... custom boxes always sound better factory boxes. Well....long as it's built correctly. Factory boxes rarely used 3/4" mdf or seal it completely leaving leaks and rattles.

the 100a fuse will be more than enough, after box rise at 600watts rms and 70% efficiency you will not be pulling more than 80amps, i run a 2700rms amp on a 300a fuse for over 3 years now, have it clamped at 280amps max
3:16 How much bass do you want? How much room do you have..... How much are you willing to spend? AND ...... How much much hearing loss decades later is acceptable?
Interesting fact is that low frequencies (bass) aren't harmful to your hearing until about 160db its the highs that do the damage as there "sharp" sound waves
@@Bearnos it is true; bass frequencies you don't actually "hear" for the most part you just feel it, what you hear is things moving more than the "beat" mids and highs are what will destroy your hearing aka 2 15s next to you is better than being next to a 6.5 inch mid
Someone that actually takes the fuse into account! Thank you for actually doing that! Most don't even think of the fuse and choke their amps. Try it out on actual SPL meter, such as an SMD one, those DB Meyers are not accurate for you are doing. I believe you are reaching a hitting much higher to Jan 108 DB.
I love it, built a custom ported one for 2 10's once before my car was stolen, then I had another ported box with a plexiglass cover to protect the speakers once, put lights in that to match the beat and it was badass.
Yo, that circuit breaker wears out over time and every time it trips, it handles less power. like 150 first trip, 145 second, 140 third, etc... Also, you are being VERY generous on the amperage draw of your amp. I guarantee that 100amp fuse that came in the kit would have worked for you. Edit: Also never play your sub with the truck/hatch open, the sub uses the pressure for cone control, and having it open can cause coil rub. Edit 2: Port length matters! you can calculate your box's tuning based on the ports length. and while that is a "SPL meter" that is not how car audio is metered. You need a car audio specific SPL meter like a term-lab, SPL lab, or SSA meter. With one of those you would be hitting way above 108db, it would meter at least a 125db. The loudest my truck has gotten to was 153db.
@@bonzainews The Fuse is there to protect the cable from burning in case of a short circuit. It should be as small as possible. If the fuse is too small for your amp. You need a bigger cable. Stays safe with electricity
@@DaCracky the fuse will pop before the cable melts which is why you don't want to oversize the fuse unnecessarily. If 60 is good then that's plenty enough.
That 100A fuse supplied by Kicker for the amp IS THE CORRECT SIZE! Yes, the math he did is correct, BUT, the engineers at Kicker know a little bit about the power consumption of the amp they designed and they also know where the danger zone is for the components inside of it, hence the 100A fuse enclosed in the box. While the unit has the ability to pull (Zack's math) 111 amps, that only happens for very brief periods of time as even with the volume turned up all the way the music has peaks and valleys of the signal/frequencies being sent to the amp with the lowest ones pulling the most amount of current or amperage. The fuse supplied can handle more than 100 amps on a regular basis, as long as it does so in very short spurts. To blow the 100 amp fuse supplied by Kicker would require a constant test signal from the head unit of 20Hz for an extended period of time. Automotive type fuses are time delay, so those little spurts to 111A are not an issue. WHAT IS AN ISSUE though is when for some reason, a malfunction occurs that makes the amplifier start to pull over 100 amps for a long period. If that happens, the 100 amp time delay fuse will pop after a specified length of time and break the connection BEFORE IT CAUSES ANY MAJOR DAMAGE like a fire, toasting your sub or having the amplifier internals melt and run out like candle wax. Zack is a sharp guy and what he did and said seems to make a lot of sense to him and probably most viewers? Before applying what seems like good logic to electricity (AC or DC), always verify your logic with fact. Assumptions can lead to problems and this one could be bad? These are awesome videos with great information and I'm sorry to even post this but it could be a serious issue for someone? (Nobody is perfect?)

Two things: You could have had a longer port had you run it out of the side of the box (less chance pf filling it with spilled M&Ms), and 5th Order Isobaric speaker boxes have been around since the 90s.
So i'll add a couple of extra points here:
1. You should always go for an amp that is slightly more powerful than the sub because that will actually factor into how precisely your sub will kick. If the amp has a power reserve, then it wont be streched close to its limits and will hold the sub in place. You can always dial the amp down if you are getting distortions
4. Theres also a 3rd type of enclosure: Bandpass
All of this! ‼️‼️
Great comment. However you did glance over the poor choice in woofer itself
@@LewdnCute L7s are perfect for casuals lol

Good video, I've built a heap of enclosures over the years and the explanation here was simple and easy to follow.
I'd add a few small points;

Generally speaking most setups will have best mix of results by going ported.. Unless Ur super tight on space... Then sealed is essentially Ur only option.
Not true
What we learned from this Video
*BASS IS EVERYTHING*
I feel the need to correct this,
Your sub doesnt have any output at a certain ohm load!
If you wire a dvc 2ohm sub to parrallel, you will get a final impedance of 1ohm at the amp give or take! Which is what uou want
True asf
Im sure the subwoofer is a dual voice coil. In this case it has 2 voice coils at 2 ohms each. Only way to wire this as a single subwoofer is at 1 ohm or 4 ohm.
Dude this is the first money pit where I really had no idea how to do any of the stuff they do in the video and honestly man this series got like 10x better. Most of the time it was just me just being entertained but the education aspect is soooo nice

One more tip:
Run your power and audio cables separately.
Aren't the audio cables shielded to prevent this from happening?
@@rabitec. most aren’t.
Also keep your ground wire as short as possible.. audio wires up driver side, power wires up passenger side. If your battery is not in the trunk use a capacitor.. I have done a few different systems in my days and am itching to do one in my next car :)
Oooo also, keep your fuse as close to the battery as possible!

I love my crown vic for that reason. Enough room for a box with 2 tens and 3 full size spare tires as well.
Something to also keep in mind is that amp and sub manufacturers often lie about the peak power rating, just to have a big number on the box. It should be RMS * sqrt(2) but you'll often find ratings of RMS*2 or even RMS*2.25
If you buy from companies like kicker and other lower level brands yes they do lie

The kicker box was smaller because it had pollyfil to help make up for more space. If you add pollyfil to the box it should improve. Also the port length is determined by the port diameter and desired tune frequency

In Sweden our car culture is a lot about the sound systems, we build crazy systems in our volvos and trucks like nissan king cabs. We build with bass speaker and every thing, I don't think many people know that

How much room do you have.....
How much are you willing to spend?

How much much hearing loss decades later is acceptable?
Interesting fact is that low frequencies (bass) aren't harmful to your hearing until about 160db its the highs that do the damage as there "sharp" sound waves
I want all the hearing loss so I don’t have to listen to my wife complain anymore 🔉😂🔉

What is your opinion on Oxygen Free Copper wire?
100 fuse is perfect for that amp. Any more is overkill. My son runs a 60 amp glass fuse with his same amp and it does not blow with music.
Dont know why he thought he need to put that high wattage in calc
Thank You! I am glad someone else said this!!
Making sure the enclosure has appropriate air space and allowing the sub to break in will increase those db numbers! Great video as always 💥
