My opinion Had Randy not got out of shape and have to correct toward the end of the run in the GT500.... it would have won. I am absolutely in love with the brand new 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500, I have been a very big and long term Ford fan and enthusiast for Shelby American's work on these cars and it's honestly just awesome to see how well the new 2020 Shelby GT500 CFTP performs on the S550 Mustang platform and I couldn't be any happier with it. Thanks for the Hotlap and review on this monster MotorTrend.
Picked up my shadow black 2020 GT 500 on 2/2/21 and I enjoy driving it more than my 2016 z06 and I never thought I would say that. The GT 500 is so planted around corners with so much confidence and then pulls so much power when needed it is a drivers car more than a corvette plain and simple...fantastic job Ford Performance.

Absolutely love my Shelby GT500! Straight line power when you need it but the fact that it can corner and stop as well as it can is the best thing about it!

Lets remind ourselves of the last generation GT500 numbers. The 2013-2014 GT500 was advertised with 662hp out of a 5.8L engine. Fast foward to the 2020 GT500, it advertises 760hp out of...just a 5.2L. I'm impressed. That literage reminds me of the GT350 they put out a few short years ago. I cant recall the exact HP numbers but was skyward of 520+hp....that is also naturally aspirated. That number harks back at the 2005-09 era GT500's but with a supercharged 5.4L. Now we can get those numbers without a supercharger and smaller. Pretty amazing to me.
Horsepower has definitely increased a lot in the past few years, though I feel like we may reach a soft plateau in the coming years due to stricter CAFE standards.

@@DatW268 They just can't stand it and kept denying that the 2020 GT500 could handle based off 2013 -14 solid axle limitations. They failed to consider the goods in the new Shelby and kept talking it down based on previous versions. Well.... the GT500 smoked the new C8 and is faster than the ZL1! Shelby is also over 4 seconds faster from 0-150 than the ZL1 1LE according to Car and Driver.
Yeah, it's annoying how many use the weight as excuse to doubt it's track abilities. Remember, this is a 10 second car unlike the Camaro ZL1 1LE. Plus, it has a dual clutch transmission which makes it quite unique in it's own way. First pony car to ever have a dual clutch transmission.

I just live for these videos. Absolutely a joy to watch. I love all of the cars. I think people are forgetting, or maybe, just not wanting to accept, that this is a Mustang! I will start it again! A Mustang! Yes, Shelby etc, but when a Mustang, makes Ferrari, Porsche, Corvette, Lamborghini owners/drivers, plus on the track, fear and EXCUSES. This is a front engine, rear drive, USA, Mustang, a car known, as just, a muscle car, making iconic cars, drivers. Owners sweat bullets and a monster at Laguna…a Mustang. I think the key takeaway here, with no disrespect to anyone, reading most comments, loving the video, Randy in heaven, that these are not, just, muscle cars anymore. This, is not Ford/Dodge/Chevy, with more Camaro in this class, versus each other, but collectively, versus iconic cars of the world. If somebody told me, that iconic cars, that I love, iconic brands I love, would sweat years later against a muscle car, any, muscle car, even in the name, that is absolutely amazing and a new rightful title, not being the correct one, but Muscle Racing Cars and not just the Mustang. No more straight ahead only. Bring on all comers, at the track, including, Chevy and Dodge, available at dealerships, not some ultra special order, or crazy aftermarket super company offering (Shelby I know). I could have never imagined any Camaro, Challenger, Mustang, pushing icons to up the stakes. Good on Detroit, thinking, Muscle Car Home. All this, for the price against supercars, that were super cars to begin with! Wow! I am not disagreeing with anyone! Not a rebuttal. Just, muscle cars are not just muscle cars anymore, not just the Mustang, amazing. If it would have been a new Ford GT, fine, no surprise, but a Mustang, any Mustang. Great video! Many years ago the Nissan GT-R shocked the world about how a 1.800kg car can be so fast. Now the Ford GT 500 do the same only with rwd. How a +2000kg can be so fast on the track?
Its easy to see why Randy Pobst keeps giving Ford performance high praise when we look at his comments from driving the previous generation GT500. Ford appearantly listened to every word Pobst had to say... which wasn't stellar. Randy didn't like the feel of the brakes and the solid axle along with outdated suspension... which was a hindrance to getting power down. When asked what more he'd like Randy stated (jokingly?) he'd like another hundred h.p. on top of the 662 it put out. It took six years but Ford listened and this current GT500 is the result. This is why we keep hearing Randy say...."Ford should be proud"! He means it too.

I know Laguna Seca by heart from endless hours playing Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec... I'm watching Randy and in my mind I'm like "ok start braking NOW....here comes the corkscrew...ok you can open it up here--floor it.." LOL.
People saying the C8 was a base lol it’s a MID ENGINE $100k car…This front engine, 2 ton pony car beat it. That’s all there is to say…It’s impressive! End of story. Have to give the GT500 and Shelby team a lot of credit to get that caliber of time on a road course!
@@ACMEpowersports The gt500 already has really high dealer mark up suggesting its undervalued. Also ford is gonna stop making the gt500 and gt350 making this the last generation. So, I think this car will hold its value well (especially the cftp version) it may even reach future classic status.

It’s 4000lbs with all kinds of tricks to hide it’s weight! It’s fast as snot but it’s still 2 seconds a lap slower than Porsche’s Grand Touring car. Money notwithstanding would you take the Shelby or a Porsche 3RS or 2RS?
That car is awesome! About a half second faster than the zl1 1le manual. and up 110hp. Still surprised how much slower the vette was. So amazing how fast these cars are on the track! Put me behind the wheel i be lucky to do 2 min lap!
@@avinavpradhan3829 nope its only faster than the manual transmission camaro. A 10 speed zl1 1le is faster than the GT500 CFTP. Manual version did it in 1:34:30 so less than half a second difference. Plus camaro zl1 1le is on sale for $65,000 versus more than $100,000 for the GT500!
c8 atm being base model has 260 less hp, bring out a vette with say around 700hp. Forgot video i watched on track that stang only beat c8 by 1.5 or so seconds and that was cause straights, in all the corners the c8 was beating it.
@@hecrod5429 that is true, but the GT500 CFTP is a true track car with much more power, while the C8 is an all around sports car. When the Z06 and ZR1 come out, they will win, which makes sense. But I still love the Shelby it’s a great car
To me being a full sized car before and be able to beat most cars around and down a track makes it the ultimate car. To think you can do a few minor mods and a tune for under 20k and make 1150whp
I love the video, the comment, all of it, but I am constantly asked this, so just throwing it in. The BMW M3, owned the best time at Laguna Seca, for a long time. Great car! There is a documentary, of the creation, of the Boss 302, back in about 2011, I think. Open creation, from scratch, to beat that time, but make the Mustang, a pony car, straight line, to lap quality car, open to input and 3 persons were invited for creation. The first, was the original Boss 302 Racing Champion, from back in the day, a NASCAR driver andF1 driver. After every couple of laps, they offered suggestions and those kept happening, until, they were satisfied. It murdered the record time. I guess so. Carroll Shelby wanted to try it, as a guest, really, showing up, interested and was afforded the opportunity to try it out. Deservingly so! He was, so in shock, called it the Best Mustang ever, actually, a racing car, that should not be allowed to be purchased from a dealership. I don’t disagree. He wanted his name on it, it was thought about, he said it was only, to say, that it was the best Mustang ever, not, a Shelby Mustang. Fine. That evoked into the Shelby 350 (R), in 2016, I think, then evolved into this, the GT500. I did not know that the 350 and 500, back in the day, were the distance, in feet, produced, from the regular Mustang production facility. I am just asked so often, loving all cars, but a known Mustang lover, who isn’t a Dodge/Chevy hater. I like cars. Is the 2016 the same, as the 2011, or 2012, no, but the thought process was there, from 2011, or so, then this, with the same idea in mind. I am only adding this, asked, so many times and loving cars and Mustangs, there is never enough videos and this one great. If you know, that is great, I don’t know it all, far from it, just asked a lot. If you learned one thing, great. I am always looking to learn, about cars in general, loving them all. ZL1 1LE that was tested in 2018 was a manual transmission. The difference is 0.46 seconds. 10 speed auto 1le has surpassed GT500 CFTP on every other tests, including car and driver, throttle house lap times. I don’t know why people think the GT500 is all holy grail. You are paying almost $100,000 for it and can not even beat a $65,000 camaro with more than 100 hp less horsepower. Let’s talk about the reality and facts here. You can go online and find a 10 speed auto ZL1 1LE for $65,000.
@@al151 What? The Shelby was over 4 seconds faster from 0-150 mph then the 1LE from Car and Driver test. Randy Pobst owns a Camaro and says that the GT500 is faster around the track. Throttle house and Edmunds both had mixed results. At Edmunds the GT500 walked away from both Hellcat redeye and Camaro. Car and Driver picked the Camaro.... not because it was faster but rather based their decision on the Camaro "being a better bargain." ..... Not better performance.
@@richardmodglin3900 In almost all cases where the GT500 lost, it had old tires. I'm not saying that to sound defensive, many of the reviewers even admitted the GT500 would be faster with new tires.

As fast as the GT500 is, you can clearly tell Randy was having more fun in the GT350 he lapped last year, and the 350R in 2016. Goes to show how special the 350 really was.
Wonder how the ZL1 1LE auto10 will do. 1.34.30 in a manual ZL1 1LE vs 1.33.84 in a DCT GT500. Motor Trend should bring them both, plus the C8, and do a shootout
Yeah, on the regular ZL1 non 1LE, they did a track comparison between the 6 speed and 10 speed and the 10 was faster. They definitely should try that 10 speed 1LE from 2019-2021 and do a head 2 head between the two.
Honestly, all they need to do is Put Michelin Cup 2s on the ZL1-1LE and it will beat the GT500 around Laguna Seca!!. With 110HP less Horsepower, a Manual Transmission, and Inferior track tires (Goodyear Eagle F1 R) the Camaro was only 0.46 secs slower around Laguna Seca... the difference is in the tires! not only that. i can buy a Zl1-1LE for 67k brand new from the dealer. while the GT500 is 93K MSRP(Carbon Track Edition) let alone finding one less than $100k from a dealer. This is comming from a Shelby Owner. either Supercharge a GT350 or just buy a ZL1-1LE. either way you will save at least $20-$25 Grand and have an Superior car!
@@darwinLee81283 Yeah. I am a Camaro owner but personally I would go GT500 non CFTP for daily drivability. I don’t know, I love both but the 1LE ZL1 just looks too extreme for me. Same for the base ZL1 since that’s just a Supercharged SS 1LE which is also too extreme for me. Currently I drive an i4 1LE Camaro which also is becoming a headache so I might go GT500 soon. Or a SS, not sure yet.

4225 POUNDS with 56% front weight distribution...truly is an amazing feat to run that time because that car is a fat pig. Front tires and brakes for days if you track that thing.
Love that this car stock is 17 decibels over the 90db limit allowed at Laguna.

Its 4 sec faster than a c8, a bit faster than a camaro, and only 1 sec slower than a v10 awd huracan and a f8 tributo. Pretty impessive.

On a drag strip, yes. On a normal street, it runs an 11.3 which is still insane!

My opinion
Had Randy not got out of shape and have to correct toward the end of the run in the GT500.... it would have won. Either way, the Ford clearly proved itself and dropped some jaws from Porsche owners and many others on this day.

I am absolutely in love with the brand new 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500, I have been a very big and long term Ford fan and enthusiast for Shelby American's work on these cars and it's honestly just awesome to see how well the new 2020 Shelby GT500 CFTP performs on the S550 Mustang platform and I couldn't be any happier with it. Picked up my shadow black 2020 GT 500 on 2/2/21 and I enjoy driving it more than my 2016 z06 and I never thought I would say that. The GT 500 is so planted around corners with so much confidence and then pulls so much power when needed it is a drivers car more than a corvette plain and simple...fantastic job Ford Performance.

Lets remind ourselves of the last generation GT500 numbers. The 2013-2014 GT500 was advertised with 662hp out of a 5.8L engine. Fast foward to the 2020 GT500, it advertises 760hp out of...just a 5.2L. I'm impressed. That literage reminds me of the GT350 they put out a few short years ago. I cant recall the exact HP numbers but was skyward of 520+hp....that is also naturally aspirated. That number harks back at the 2005-09 era GT500's but with a supercharged 5.4L. Now we can get those numbers without a supercharger and smaller. Pretty amazing to me.
Horsepower has definitely increased a lot in the past few years, though I feel like we may reach a soft plateau in the coming years due to stricter CAFE standards.
Watch this and the Huracan side by side.. Super impressed that this was right there with it the entire lap!

They just can't stand it and kept denying that the 2020 GT500 could handle based off 2013 -14 solid axle limitations. They failed to consider the goods in the new Shelby and kept talking it down based on previous versions. Well.... the GT500 smoked the new C8 and is faster than the ZL1! Shelby is also over 4 seconds faster from 0-150 than the ZL1 1LE according to Car and Driver.
Yeah, it's annoying how many use the weight as excuse to doubt it's track abilities. Remember, this is a 10 second car unlike the Camaro ZL1 1LE. Plus, it has a dual clutch transmission which makes it quite unique in it's own way. First pony car to ever have a dual clutch transmission.

I just live for these videos. Absolutely a joy to watch. I love all of the cars. I think people are forgetting, or maybe, just not wanting to accept, that this is a Mustang! I will start it again! A Mustang! Yes, Shelby etc, but when a Mustang, makes Ferrari, Porsche, Corvette, Lamborghini owners/drivers, plus on the track, fear and EXCUSES. This is a front engine, rear drive, USA, Mustang, a car known, as just, a muscle car, making iconic cars, drivers. Owners sweat bullets and a monster at Laguna…a Mustang. I think the key takeaway here, with no disrespect to anyone, reading most comments, loving the video, Randy in heaven, that these are not, just, muscle cars anymore. This, is not Ford/Dodge/Chevy, with more Camaro in this class, versus each other, but collectively, versus iconic cars of the world. If somebody told me, that iconic cars, that I love, iconic brands I love, would sweat years later against a muscle car, any, muscle car, even in the name, that is absolutely amazing and a new rightful title, not being the correct one, but Muscle Racing Cars and not just the Mustang. No more straight ahead only. Bring on all comers, at the track, including, Chevy and Dodge, available at dealerships, not some ultra special order, or crazy aftermarket super company offering (Shelby I know). I could have never imagined any Camaro, Challenger, Mustang, pushing icons to up the stakes. Good on Detroit, thinking, Muscle Car Home. All this, for the price against supercars, that were super cars to begin with! Wow! I am not disagreeing with anyone! Just, a Mustang, any Mustang, on a race track and not limited to taking on, just other Muscle Cars. Making excuses for a Vette, is begging Ford to bring in the new refined Ford GT then (doesn’t exist), but, go muscle cars, hating on nothing, nobody, or any cars listed, loving them all. Not a rebuttal. Just, muscle cars are not just muscle cars anymore, not just the Mustang, amazing. If it would have been a new Ford GT, fine, no surprise, but a Mustang, any Mustang. I would say the same for a Camaro or Challenger, as they are monsters. Just an opinion. Muscle Cars refined, for sure. Keep in mind, I would take any of these cars and winning lesson from Randy would be the best. All the best to all!

Great video! Many years ago the Nissan GT-R shocked the world about how a 1.800kg car can be so fast. Now the Ford GT 500 do the same only with rwd. How a +2000kg can be so fast on the track?
Its easy to see why Randy Pobst keeps giving Ford performance high praise when we look at his comments from driving the previous generation GT500. Ford appearantly listened to every word Pobst had to say... which wasn't stellar. Randy didn't like the feel of the brakes and the solid axle along with outdated suspension... which was a hindrance to getting power down. When asked what more he'd like Randy stated (jokingly?) he'd like another hundred h.p. on top of the 662 it put out. It took six years but Ford listened and this current GT500 is the result. This is why we keep hearing Randy say...."Ford should be proud"! He means it too.

@@avinavpradhan3829 nope its only faster than the manual transmission camaro. A 10 speed zl1 1le is faster than the GT500 CFTP. Manual version did it in 1:34:30 so less than half a second difference. Plus camaro zl1 1le is on sale for $65,000 versus more than $100,000 for the GT500!

c8 atm being base model has 260 less hp, bring out a vette with say around 700hp. Forgot video i watched on track that stang only beat c8 by 1.5 or so seconds and that was cause straights, in all the corners the c8 was beating it.

I love the video, the comment, all of it, but I am constantly asked this, so just throwing it in. The BMW M3, owned the best time at Laguna Seca, for a long time. Great car! There is a documentary, of the creation, of the Boss 302, back in about 2011, I think. Open creation, from scratch, to beat that time, but make the Mustang, a pony car, straight line, to lap quality car, open to input and 3 persons were invited for creation. The first, was the original Boss 302 Racing Champion, from back in the day, a NASCAR driver andF1 driver. After every couple of laps, they offered suggestions and those kept happening, until, they were satisfied. It murdered the record time. I guess so. Carroll Shelby wanted to try it, as a guest, really, showing up, interested and was afforded the opportunity to try it out. Deservingly so! He was, so in shock, called it the Best Mustang ever, actually, a racing car, that should not be allowed to be purchased from a dealership. I don’t disagree. He wanted his name on it, it was thought about, he said it was only, to say, that it was the best Mustang ever, not, a Shelby Mustang. Fine. That evoked into the Shelby 350 (R), in 2016, I think, then evolved into this, the GT500. I did not know that the 350 and 500, back in the day, were the distance, in feet, produced, from the regular Mustang production facility. I am just asked so often, loving all cars, but a known Mustang lover, who isn’t a Dodge/Chevy hater. I like cars. Is the 2016 the same, as the 2011, or 2012, no, but the thought process was there, from 2011, or so, then this, with the same idea in mind. I am only adding this, asked, so many times and loving cars and Mustangs, there is never enough videos and this one great. ZL1 1LE that was tested in 2018 was a manual transmission. The difference is 0.46 seconds. 10 speed auto 1le has surpassed GT500 CFTP on every other tests, including car and driver, throttle house lap times. I don’t know why people think the GT500 is all holy grail. You are paying almost $100,000 for it and can not even beat a $65,000 camaro with more than 100 hp less horsepower. Let’s talk about the reality and facts here. You can go online and find a 10 speed auto ZL1 1LE for $65,000.

What? The Shelby was over 4 seconds faster from 0-150 mph then the 1LE from Car and Driver test. Randy Pobst owns a Camaro and says that the GT500 is faster around the track. Throttle house and Edmunds both had mixed results. At Edmunds the GT500 walked away from both Hellcat redeye and Camaro. Car and Driver picked the Camaro.... not because it was faster but rather based their decision on the Camaro "being a better bargain." ..... Not better performance.

Yes, Randy Pobst said it too after the hot laps between Camaro and GT500. He noted that the tires on the Shelby were cooked snd Said that the GT500 could beat the 1LE with fresh tires.

Yeah, on the regular ZL1 non 1LE, they did a track comparison between the 6 speed and 10 speed and the 10 was faster. They definitely should try that 10 speed 1LE from 2019-2021 and do a head 2 head between the two.
Honestly, all they need to do is Put Michelin Cup 2s on the ZL1-1LE and it will beat the GT500 around Laguna Seca!!.
With 110HP less Horsepower, a Manual Transmission, and Inferior track tires (Goodyear Eagle F1 R) the Camaro was only 0.46 secs slower around Laguna Seca...
the difference is in the tires! not only that. i can buy a Zl1-1LE for 67k brand new from the dealer. while the GT500 is 93K MSRP(Carbon Track Edition) let alone finding one less than $100k from a dealer. This is comming from a Shelby Owner. either Supercharge a GT350 or just buy a ZL1-1LE. either way you will save at least $20-$25 Grand and have an Superior car!
@@darwinLee81283 Yeah. I am a Camaro owner but personally I would go GT500 non CFTP for daily drivability. I don’t know, I love both but the 1LE ZL1 just looks too extreme for me. Same for the base ZL1 since that’s just a Supercharged SS 1LE which is also too extreme for me. Currently I drive an i4 1LE Camaro which also is becoming a headache so I might go GT500 soon. Or a SS, not sure yet.

This is the king of the pony cars, coming from a SS Camaro owner.
zl1 1le is much more impressive considering how much of a disadvantage it has and it's still so close.
4225 POUNDS with 56% front weight distribution...truly is an amazing feat to run that time because that car is a fat pig. Front tires and brakes for days if you track that thing.
Rear tires, too. Putting down 760 horsepower through them constantly won't make them last very long.
