    Pat Benatar wrote the song "Hell is for Children" after reading a series of articles about child abuse in The New York Times in 1979. The song is about children who have experienced unspeakable things, and is intended to provide strength to the child and to let them know they are not alone

      It helped to bring the topic of child abuse to a place where it could be talked about. It helped children speak up, and for survivors to realize that what they experienced was not normal. This song changed the paradigm and helped create change.

    She got all sorts of hate from people who didn’t understand this song. We know what she’s singing about and it’s the most heartbreaking subject.

    This was her way of bringing attention to something that was swept under the rug back then.

    Neil Geraldo - her husband and lead guitarist wrote most of this song - they often write together.
    She and her husband have been a long time advocates for the support of children and their well-being. Since 1996 they've been hosting and performing at fundraising events and lending assistance to the non-profit organization The Children's Lifesaving Foundation.

      She spoke about this song in an interview saying that she read a series of articles about child abuse in the NY Times. She grew up in a very idealic home and that anyone would treat children like that shocked her to her core. She sat down and wrote the lyrics in about a half hour, took it to Neil and he wrote the music, which is typical of their partnership. Chrysalis Records didn't want such a controversial subject on the record, but she put her tiny little foot down and basically told them that either they put it on the album or they don't get an album. It went on to become one of her biggest hits yet she and Neil have donated every penny made from it to helping abused children. Even though they are technically taking a financial loss on it, they don't view it as such. I am an abuse survivor and when I first heard it, it felt as if she were singing directly to me. I have nothing but respect for her and her husband who chose to be the first to so publicly and blatantly address one of the most hideous "dirty little secrets" of our society

    1981 was a very different time. No social media information was not instantaneous. There were still many topics that people just didn’t talk about in “polite society”. Certainly child abuse was among those. It was considered a private family matter. Thankfully this song shined a bright light into that dark corner of so many lives. Made the subject part of the conversation and I truly believe gave a ray of hope to people long hidden in the shadows. Saw Pat and Neil last fall in Vegas. Amazing show and this number drew a standing ovation. They both still have IT as far as performing live to an audience.

    I have always appreciated this song - it was so important to bring attention to the fact that abused children, in many cases, can't or won't protect themselves or tell others what is happening to them which is something their abusers take advantage of. People that care need to pay attention to the signs - unexplained injuries, fearfulness around certain adults, sudden/unusual expressions of sexuality, sudden changes in how a child views or speaks of themselves ... kids are people, so of course there will be variations and one specific thing doesn't mean a kid is being abused, but it does mean that you should pay a little more attention and perhaps ask a few extra questions instead of just writing off the behavior.
    In this song, there are several references to hiding what is happening from someone else - "don't tell mommy", "tell grandma you fell off the swing" ... if you think something is up with a kid you care about: your own kid, a cousin, a grandchild, niece or nephew ... ask questions and pay attention. It may be nothing, but it could also be SOMETHING ...
    And for the love of all that is holy, stop forcing very little kids to hug others or allow others to kiss, hug, or touch them when they are not comfortable with it or tell the other person to stop. Kids won't learn that they can make decisions about who they allow in their space if their parents continually allow others to bulldoze over the kid's boundaries and make them feel like a baby doll instead of a person. Might not be the most popular opinion ... but still ... kids are inexperienced and it's up to the adults in their lives to teach them what is and is not appropriate treatment so later on when they are adults themselves, they know to protect themselves or leave if something is not right.
    Sorry for the super long post and I hope it doesn't cause too much drama ...

    Great song choice my childhood was watching videos on MTV :) Pat Benatar is definitely up there as on of my favs. “Hell is For Children” delves into the grim reality of child abuse and neglect. Though it was never a single, it's a staple in her live shows. The song sprang from NY Times articles that shook Benatar, sparking the first lines. Neil Giraldo, her guitarist and co-writer, shaped its haunting melody and chorus. The music's slow, somber verses against urgent choruses echo the anguish of mistreated kids, where love and hurt blur. Benatar aimed for the music to reflect the children's suffering she read about, crafting a track that's raw and real in its depiction of this tough topic. It's a powerful piece that's sadly still resonant today.

    * In The Heat Of The Night (1979)
    * Crimes Of Passion (1980)
    * Precious Time (1981)
    Pat Benatar was on top of the world.

    To be honest, I never really paid attention to Pat Benatar until the first time I heard this song. I remember it started on the radio as I was arriving to work on a morning shift in 1981. I couldn't tear myself away from it. I understood immediately what she was singing about, and it tore my heart out. It still does today every time that I listen to it. I recently saw Pat and Neil in concert, and when they performed this song, the entire audience was on their feet for every note. Really powerful stuff. This song was a huge boost to public awareness of the issue.

    It's a known fact that MK-Ultra experimented on children as well as adults. This song released about five years after some of this information started coming out about Mk-Ultra, it was on the news often in the mid to late 1970's and after that too. Personally, I think Pat might have wrote this song also with those children in mind. I was one of them, and hell is an understatement. It happened in the late 1950's for me. Mk-Ultra existed long before Mk-Ultra got found out about. I was extremely young, I still remember quite a lot of some of the experiments they did to me. I have no where near recovered, especially mentally, I was extemely smart for my age but that came to an end at their hands. I am lost as to how or why I survived. I truly shouldn't have, and that's just from the parts I can remember, and there was more to it at times, follow-ups as I got older. In the beginning of it all, there was about 30 stored cribs on the other side of the room from me, all were empty but mine, yet there were ruffled up blankets in most of them. I thought at the time that it's likely that some, or possibly all of the others perished in that place or a different place. I know this also, Mom and Dad (I'm very sure it was them) carried me (I was still druged up but awake somehow) out of Milledgeville GA State Hospital thanks to me finally locating that location about 6 years ago, online. I'm not sure if that's the only complex Mk-Ultra had me at. Mom and dad drove a black car (I'm remembering the car being black mostly from when we stopped at a gas station on the way home, but also when mom and dad had it parked at Milledgeville, just less so) around the hospital grounds before we left, just to tour the place, and I still remember the buildings, and more, to now know it was Milledgeville GA State Hospital that they carried me out of. I could explain more and in more detail, but that would be a whole lot more.

    Back then, child abuse wasn't something that people talked about - it was all hush-hush and people shied away from it. They brought the subject out into the light and did it in a very powerful way. And the result was people started talking about it and lawmakers took action against it. A few years later the hype died down until Suzanne Vega wrote a song about it as seen from the eyes of an abused child - Luka. This song brought the spotlight back to child abuse and hit home, IMHO, even harder than Hell Is For Children. You should definitely check that one out. It *will* bring tears to your eyes.

    This song was written by her husband - her guitar player. They were upset/against child abuse and were trying to send a message. Back when this came out - child abuse was not talked about. It was hidden. Also Pat's label was telling her they would not put this song on the album because it's too heavy. Pat said put this song on the album or there will be no album! AND all the money this song made - Pat and her husband started a child foundation for abused children and all of the royalties go to the foundation. It was very controversial.

      @@JD_Cool Another fun fact: I went to a garage sale with my mom in the early 80s at a house that was maybe 2 houses away from the infamous house. I looked at it for a bit then we left. It was just a house... (This was before the house was renovated and had it's number changed, so it still looked the same.) Also my grandmother worked at the Mclellan's store on 110 in the middle of town for the bulk of her life as the bookkeeper and retired some time in the '80s. She walked there from her house in copiague every day for like 30+ years. She was one tough old lady.

    Pat and her guitarist Husband Neil wanted Hell is for Children to be a Aggressive track to highlight the Taboo topic of Child Abuse in America. Pat had read articles on the subject and was immediately horrified as it seemed surreal to her as one who grew up in a great community in Long Island. The song became an Anthem for victims of abuse and really Pat's mission as she started a Foundation that still works
    on behalf of children of abuse and domestic violence.
