@@christhornycroft3686 I also like Stevie Nicks. Joan Jett is the poor man’s version of Pat. My other favorite female vocalist is Janis Joplin. Honorable mentions go to Ann Wilson & Linda Rondstadt. For old school female vocalists I love Judy Garland. Barbra is amazing but not my cup of tea.
@@christhornycroft3686 Chrissie Hynde and Stevie Nicks you just cannot compare, cause they are a different genre. And how long did Joan Jett's career last, I wonder? You can like them better, but don't diss an absolute rock icon.
Pat was a trained opera singer. The first concert I ever attended without any supervision was on 2/18/83 on her Get Nervous Tour. As great as a singer she is, her drummer Myron Grombacher stole the show.
One of my favorite songs of all time!!! The lead guitarist is also her husband, Neil Giraldo. He was a major part of her success and she refused to be inducted into the rock and hall of fame without him, which eventually happened.
He's a Cleveland boy. Spyder and pat sneak into town once in a while and hang out with the guys he grew up with. They won't post the pictures publicly until they're gone. For their protection. I respect that very much
As someone stated you should listen to the song called hell is for children. It’s actually a rock song about child abuse. You wouldn’t believe those two things could go together but they made it work. A subject no one would touch but she got an important message out. Also you’re quite right she is incredibly talented. Excellent singer, no laser lights, explosions, or 50 background dancers. Just a 10 foot tall voice from a 5 foot tall woman.
All that vocal punch from a 5' 2" (or so) powerhouse! She's always been one of my favorite artists! I remember performing this in a high school talent show in 1983! I believe we did a good cover! Great time for music! Couldn't have asked for much more as a 17 year.
If I am not mistaken, this is the song she wrote when she and her husband were having difficulty with conceiving. She Pat Benatar) was on American Idol and shared this story.
Oh, that voice cutting through the ambience in the first few minutes is just - *chef's kiss* - I love Pat Benatar's voice. Would also like to see you listen to "We Belong", "Invincible", and "Hell is For Children" (which is a lot heavier, but so passionate) ... also her version of "Wuthering Heights" is sooo good!
I was lucky enough to be in Wichita, KS just before Martina got famous. Can't remember the band she was with at the time, but every show, she always sang a song or three by Pat
Saw her in concert 3 times in the 80's and I still remember everybody around me stunned with her vocal range and they kept saying "How does anyone sound this amazing live?"
I never saw her back then but she was my favorite female singer. I have seen her about 10 times now and she and Spyder still can rock. My husband never listen to her until we saw her open for Journey and now he asks me when she is coming to Cleveland so we can go see her.
I've had the pleasure of seeing her twice live, both later in her career. The last time was about 7 or 8 years ago. She is still as good as she was then and Neil is better than he was. They're truly amazing to see live.
Absolutely fantastic singer!! I have loved her since waaay back& admired her strong voice❣️ I also love watching your take on the great music us old timers listened to💖🤙
I haven’t seen this in quite awhile. Instant chill bumps. I adore Pat, one of the great rock female vocalists of the 1980’s. She has an awesome instrument with a 4-5 octave range and can really wail. Great choice, Britt! 🤟🏼
No, she divorced Dennis Benatar before she sang professionally and then met Neil Giraldo. It's ironic that she's known for the name of the man she divorced and not the man she has been married for over forty years.
No, she married her high school sweetheart. Joined a regional band, GTFO the regional band, went back to NYC, got signed to Chrysalis thanks to Richard Belzer, hooked up with her guitarist, agreed to his band decisions and his songwriting decisions, and the rest is history. Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo.
Pat is so underrated in music history. She was (is) my favorite rock chick. I love her earlier stuff before the “pop era” of her music when the advent of music videos took over.
'We're running with the shadows of the night so baby take my hand it will be alright, surrender all your dreams to me tonight, they'll come true in the end"- She doesn't leave too much to the imagination as to what she's talking about.)
Great choice for a music reaction. You wouldn't expect such a powerful voice from a woman of such small stature. About 5' tall and 100 pounds. She's a classically trained opera singer. Her husband Neil Giraldo is the lead guitarist in her band, and they've been married for 42 years.
I have loved Pat Benetar since the first note came out of her mouth and went into my ear and changed something in there. ❤ Her voice is pure memories for me. Doesn't get much better than her in the world of Rock.
I’m glad you like her. She is amazing. When she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame she went in with her husband who is her guitarist and partner on stage and writing those great songs. She told him in the beginning that she wanted them to try to be like Plant and Page of Led Zeppelin.
Pat & Neil still bringing it 40+ years later... saw them in the 80s, 90s and now into the 2000s... What a great story as a rock couple and family and the passion and chemistry completely comes through on stage.
She is famous for her interactions with the audience. She understood that she may do 40 shows, but tonight is the only one youll see and she made it special. Since you like stories, in your private time you should check out her official video for this song. PS love the hat!!
Oh yeah, The Velvet Whip.😀. I came across the DVD of this concert (New Haven Connecticut 1982) brand new at a indoor flea market some 10 years ago and paid $3 for it. That's pretty awesome because this DVD is out of print and hard to find. Pat Benatar is one of the best female voices in music next to Linda Ronstadt and Karen Carpenter.
U2 -All I Want is You/ Where the Streets Have no Name (Live @ Slaine Castle) Has a great crowd reaction. This is 4 days after Bono's dad passed away. Shows a ton of emotion in between the songs.
The Rock and Roll HoF finally inducted Pat Benatar. They should be ashamed it took so long. Seriously ridiculous. And, btw, no autotune... no background singers... no lip-syncing... just a badass vocalist.
The 80s was a great decade of women artists like Pat Benatar, Blondie, The Bangles, Cindi Lauper, Madonna, Annie Lennox, Heart, Tina Turner, Joan Jet and Patty Smyth. Benatar's "Love is a Battlefield" and "We Belong" are great songs too.
Brit - you have to check out the video for this song. It was a staple on MTV in the 80's (early days of MTV). There are a few cameos that you surprise you.
I saw Pat Benatar in concert when I was about 17 or 18. Cape Cod Coliseum. I was standing in about the seventh row. For about four full seconds, we made eye contact and she smiled at me. That’s all I needed. 😂 Powerful and gorgeous in that little frame.
Just discovered your channel. I love it when young people discover classic music. One group you should check out. Is ELO, Electric Light Orchestra. I think it was George Harrison that said if the Beatles had a baby it is ELO. Jeff Lynn leader of the group is a music genius. They have their own strings section.
Most people don't know that Pat's version of this song was the 3rd one, largely taken from Rachel Sweet's version, with some modified lyrics. Rachel's version is outstanding as well. The original was done by Helen Schneider and the core melody is there but the lyrics and tone of the song is quite different. The music video is also very weird and shot live on a stage for German TV at the time.
Yup. And DL Byron gave her a demo with lyrics written by Rachel Sweet. But he didn’t tell her about Rachel Sweet’s changes, so she released the song without crediting Rachel Sweet. So, even though Neil Giraldo’s lyrics are the iconic version of the song, Rachel Sweet gets a cut.
I'm truly blessed to have been born early in generation x. I've been blessed to see many singers and groups before all the electronics took over. These musicians and groups were as good live as they were in a studio. Blessed is what I am.
Honestly, her and Ann Wilson of Heart are number 1 and number 1a on my personal list of greatest female rock singers. I couldn't choose between them if you paid me.
Every single competition show, I'm ALWAYS looking for the next Pat Benetar. The next great female rocker. Joan Jett, Lita Ford. The list goes on and on.
She studied opera in her early years. The guitar player is her husband. She is one of the first woman Rockstars. Besides heart. I think she still touring and her whole family goes along I'm sure backstage after the concert is not as wild and crazy as let's say led zeppelin or kiss OMG do I have some stories about kiss 1977 backstage. I still can't look at Myself about that night...lol😂
So right on Britt. Difference between the greats and the others? The Biily Joels, Pat Benatars, Bonnie Raitts, Stevie Wonders, all the greats, they could add laser light shows, choreographed dances, and every other sideshow you can think of and that's fine. More to see on stage. But...they don't need them. At all. And don't use them. They and their music, naked--no distractions and they and their deliver. Every Single time. Others? They need the distractions or they wouldn't make it. It's like, " Hey! Here's a light show, dancers! Don't pay too much attention to the quality of the music or lyrics. Try not to pay too much attention to my lip synched and/or ,autotuned voice. Just watch the show. Ok?"
One of her well known songs. I have several of her albums/CDs but I tend to like other songs (I like more upbeat things usually). That's just personal taste.
