You gotta check out the rest of her library. Phenomenal vocalist. That’s her writing partner and hubby Neil Giraldo shredding the guitar. They e been married since ‘82 and still touring together.
I am 57 now but when this came out I was still getting my ass whipped with a switch. This was at the end of my whipping period but I still remember it. Affected my entire life. A swat on the ass is discipline: being beat with a willow switch is abuse. Bloody.
Me and my brother and sister were stripped naked and forced to WATCH each other get beat 30 times, one of the LAST physical abuse situations in my life, although the mental and emotional abuse and abandonment continued on into my late teen years. I think that's why I"m an exhibitionist and a sex addict to get attention *shrugs
She's got an amazing catalogue of songs... "Shadows of the Night" is my favorite, and the video is excellent, but for raw emotion, this has it in spades...
This was triggering for so many young adults who lived it. Pat rocked the song, but the message was there. Have you done "Janie's got a Gun" (Aerosmith). They took it to the next level.
"Concrete Angel" (Martina McBride), "Luka" (Suzanne Vega), and "Alyssa Lies" (Jason Michael Carroll) too... maybe not next level, but yeah. People putting it out there... :(
She was way ahead of her time, on many things, but especially with this Song on this issue. She knew Child Abuse was real, & that it was out there. She fought very hard, with her Record Label, & others to get this Song out. She had a huge Platform, & she used it to do the right thing. You have to remember that this Song was recorded long before Child Abuse was talked openly about. That’s why the Lyrics reflect that. And, if you stop & think about it Child Abuse was “cried about in the dark” for way to long. Bless those that recognize, & help those Children they know are being abused. May we all do the right thing. We may not have a huge Platform, but we have eyes & ears. May we have the courage to use them & also do the right thing.
She was classically trained. She has a huge Vocal Range. She walked away from a career of the Classical Music, to that of Rock & Roll. We are all a beneficiary of that decision.
Bruises could be dismissed because of sports or just “boys you know how they are. Bicycle accident or he’s just a little too rambunctious. When this came out abuse was normal for me

I love this one of the first songs I remember in the early &0’s they dealt with such a deep subject matter!! Bravo Pat for bringing awareness
This song helped me get a LOT of anger out of me for my childhood abuse and helped me heal!!!
This tune is about a sad, hard issue. Pat strayed away from it, but released this to bring child abuse into the light.

Promises in the dark is my fav. By her. Her vocal range in that song is off the charts! She’s a trained opera singer.
I've been a huge Pat benatar fan since the day she started thank you for sharing this

I'm a "switch" child too. And the good ole' belt!! But I hated that damn switch. You are not alone. 😞

Great reaction and review. Agreed, the dichotomy in the message and sound is effective. ✌🏽

Her husband plays lead guitar and they both wrote their own 🎵 🎶 she's better live!!!
I got to see her open for Steve Miller band at Cal Expo Amphitheatre! They shut down Cal Expo Amphitheatre and just do concerts in a fkn field now
