One of the most simple, meaningful, and uncomplicated love songs ever written. Unconditional love. I was lucky enough to have experienced that for 50 years and to return it in kind....and even now that he has passed away, I still love him in every moment just the way he is and wouldn't change a thing. I wish everyone could have that experience. Billy says it perfectly. I love you Bob.💞
Actually Mr. Joel predates the Disco era by several years. Disco was actually short lived, generally from '75 to about '80 (yes, there were some songs after '80 that had a disco vibe, but they were the exception. The mid '80s was the "Hair Band" era mostly). I remember in the early '80s certain radio stations were having disco record smashing events. Disco never really went away, they just call it "club" music now. It's what all the "hot" girls wearing 2 pounds of makeup and too small dresses get on the floor and wiggle to.
Just want to say how much I enjoy your channel and reactions. Your enthusiasm is infectious. Your love for what you do is obvious. I don't think I've ever watched a reaction video of yours and not smiled. As a child of the 70s and 80s, it's so much fun to see someone discover and appreciate Billy Joel the way you do. So, in short, don't go changing. Keep doing your reactions Just The Way You Are :)
Phil Ramone and Liberty DeVitto recommended the change. DeVitto hated playing it until the rhythm was changed. Even after the change, Joel didn’t want it on the album. Ramone recruited Carole King and Phoebe Snow to convince Billy to embrace the song and agree to put it on the record. Can you imagine this song never being released?
Billy Joel was inducted into the Songwriters HOF in 1992, the R&R HOF in 1999, and the Long Island Music HOF in 2006. In 2013 he was recognized at the Kennedy Center Honors. Thanks for reacting, love your channel.
Saw Billy on "The Stranger" tour in like 1978, and this is how he looked and sounded. In a 2500 seat theatre that had Broadway touring companies and local opera and symphony did performances. The acoustics were top flight and we were only 20 rows back in place that had no bad seats. OMG
Love Billy and his legendary songs! This bossa-nova inspired beauty is one of his best. And with the incredible Richie Canata on sax? Well... it's a gem. If you haven't already, you should definitely watch (from this same concert) "New York State of Mind." Wow - what a performance. Then follow that up with his older live performance of "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant" for dessert.
BILLY JOEL, I remember when it came out in France. This song, this very particular atmosphere which gives a calm and relaxed aspect to romanticism. Very beautiful song indeed. Thank you Britt
On most Billy Joel songs when you hear a saxophone it's being played by Richie Cannata, who was part of his band from 1975 to 1981. On the album for this song alone it's played by Phil Woods, but since this is a live performance, I guess that's Cannata playing here, too.
I grew up with Billy Joel. At 74 he can still sell out 20,000 seat Madison Square Garden for his 100th concert in that location. Not to mention that he wrote every one of his songs on every one of his albums including 11 platinum. One or two were 10 times platinum. The premier songwriter of the 20th century.
It's great to see your reaction Britt. Some songs are timeless. As a teen I was watching SNL along with my mom. She wasn't a fan to say the least. Then the featured guest Billy Joel came on and sang this song. She went silent. It hit her soul like it was 1945. Great songs reach regardless their era.
I think the case can be made that Billy Joel is the greatest artist, singer, musician, songwriter of all time. I know he isn't usually included in these conversations, even though he's super popular and has had a lot of hits, but I think he should be included in those conversations.
30 Year ago, on Friday evening, I had to pick up my daughter at the boarding school. And she bought me Billy Joel. So he sung us all the way home, many times.
It's not "you're perfect the way your mother birthed you", it's "I love you, the way you are, no matter what" unconditional love. Like your mother loves you, no conditions, no strings, no need to change anything about you because I love you. If your hair is brown, blond, pink or purple, it doesn't matter, because I love you and it's your hair. "Woman, you don't have to change anything to get my love. You've had it from the start because I love you, not your hair, not your clothes, not your makeup, just you, anyway you are." This is the way a real man loves his woman. He can't help it because he's a real man and not some overgrown boy.
Billy Joel is an American musical treasure, the George Gershwin of his time as far as songwriting is concerned. This came out while I was in college, great slow dance number . We used to joke "Don't Go Changing to try and please me, except please change your underwear..."
Fun fact/story: my father had docked his boat one day after fishing and billy had asked him if he wanted to join him on his boat going out the next day. My dad didnt recognise him at the time and unfortunately had to return to work the next day so he politely declined. Life has a twisted sense of humor sometimes. I wouldve said my boss can wait. It wouldve made a funny story to tell at work down the line. Again unfortunately he didnt recognise who he was at the time.
I got to hang out with Liberty Devito, Billy's drummer, during his 70/80s year. He said Billy would sing this to any girl he wanted to bed, and it always worked. This is the guy who was dating the two of the biggest supermodels of the 80s at the same time.
@@farfromperfek that's cool. He seems so on interviews. Cool you know him. He was a great contributor to that very talented band. Billy, Liberty, Richie, Russel and Doug were really great together. I know many other names involved, but they pulled a ton of weight. Mark has done a great job cause Ritchie was so key to it. I respect all drummers, but Liberty had a singularly unique heartbeat. Love it. Be well!
It’s more of a romantic song than it is a PDC type song. Let’s call it 75/25 romantic to PDC but that’s an awesome thing to be. I remember reading an interview with Paul Simon back in the 80’s in which he both complimented and criticized Billy at the same time. He basically said that Joel is so versatile and such a good mimic that he sometimes has trouble being himself. Billy could be Harry Chapin on one song then sound similar to Elvis. After that he may be Paul McCartney and then Ray Charles. While I see Simon’s point I think that in all these things we find Billy Joel.
Go ahead and anoint him as "Uncle Billy". Billy Joel is such a great songwriter, and you really feel every song he sings. This song was everywhere for several years. Great for a movie soundtrack, too. It is, indeed, super romantical. Totally an "afternoon delight" style song.
The man is a fabulous entertainer, pianist and song writer. Check out "New York State of Mind" Incredible song.... try to find a live version at Yankee stadium or Madison Square Garden.
Ok now I know we should have known each other at some point in the past...I used to play jazz with my tenor saxophone! No joke, but it is very lovely to listen to for sure so I agree with you! 😊😊
I KNEW IT!!! As soon as the end came, you were done!! Great reaction, as always! I remember learning this song when it came out. It was not the easiest of songs to learn!
Billy Joel definitely needed to be in the PDC. I'm so glad he is finally in!!! Some other romantic songs from him - She's Always A Woman, Honesty, She's got a Way, and my favorite ... You're My Home (my friend sang that to his wife-to-be when he proposed to her).
my goodness - your hair/braids are epic! Gorgeous Britt. Just gorgeous!!! Billy Joel is amazing indeed. Seen him live twice. Would love a chance to see him again before he hangs it up.
I always enjoy your reactions to songs. Perhaps you could consider reviewing Billy Joel's "And so it goes." It has got to be the best song about someone giving their heart to another, and it was one of the 5 songs that Billy Joel considered to be the best that he had written.
I have been a HUGE Billy Joel fan my whole life and I feel the same way, he doesn't have that PDC vibe, perhaps because Billy's lyrics are complicated and thought provoking so his songs get me in more of a cerebral place, not a physical place. Even his songs sung about women and directly to women are more love or relationship songs, and you don't get that "I'm sexy and and I know it" vibe, he's very humble. However I'd say the closest to the Hall and Oates vibe he can be are "She's Got a Way", which can get you in your feels, and "Leave a Tender Moment Alone" (live, because he can sing it so sexy)
That was a perfect induction speech 😄 I agree with you, as big of a Billy Joel fan as I am, I don't necessarily think of any of his songs as panty droppers, however he can be incredibly ROMANTIC. Just making your heart and eyelashes flutter as you heave a big sigh. Which is why it pleased me to hear you use the word "woo" since that is exactly what he's doing, the old fashioned way with words and charm. The saxophone, on the other hand, well, yes, of course that's an immediate underwear extractor. 😅 I would like to suggest Until the Night as another slow-burn romantic song (with SAX), it's his homage to the Righteous Brothers.
Written by Billy Joel.
