    Man your gameplay breakdowns are so well done and entertaining with an excellent pace. I've really gotten into watching playthroughs of this game from various folks and I like yours the best by far! I've probably watched close to a dozen of yours by now. Thanks so much for putting these out there!

    Thanks for sharing all these games, Ira. Really great to hear your thought process. Very tough game for FP, this one.
    Tbh, your self-analysis throughout the commentary is far better than anything I could offer but, as you mentioned, the Mazarbul discard stood out: seemed more valuable than Guards of the Citadel (effectively 1.5 musters vs 3 musters) and would've given you a decent chance of re-taking Dale or even WLR.

    I now realize that I have now watched over 20 hours of your videos. Great analysis that has gotten me playing this game on a regular basis. I cannot wait to see how things turn out in the Bronze round and the Italian Finals match.

    What an epic game! Of course there was some luck involved (you not rolling any WoW turns 2 and 3 and getting that eye on 10th Fellowship move) but that's the beauty of the game. Separating 4 companions into Rohan was something that stunned me. It was an amazing attempt that came very close to succeeding.
    Congratulations for both of you and good luck in the bronze medal match!

    What a beautiful game! I tend to keep everyone in the fellowship to soak up corruption when I play FP (occasionally separating Strider and Boromir when I feel like I can defend Gondor), but your play with I Will Go Alone was amazing. The more I watch your videos, the more I want to experiment with separating companions around the map. Gandalf showing up in Grey Havens and still reaching Helm's Deep for the last battle was also great. You took a great risk with the turn 5 rush for Mordor, but I think you played it perfectly. With your play, you had a 60% chance of not getting revealed on that last movement (which would have meant being able to sprint in mordor without caring too much about corruption), and I feel that when you can get a 60% chance to win you have to go for it in this game.
    I was surprised by your decision to discard Book of Mazarbul and keep Guards of the Citadel, because you usually value the "straight to war" cards very highly. The dwarves would have been able to threaten Dale and WR, but with the Easterlings starting forces still intact, the numbers wouldn't necessarily have been in your favor.

    • @WarOfTheRingChamp
      @WarOfTheRingChamp  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for the kind words. I agree this was a pretty amazing game. I certainly should have kept Book of Mazarbul, and that quite possibly cost me the game. I was worried about keeping Aragorn alive in Minas Tirith, but I should have realized that Book was more important than Fear Fire Foes, at the very least. Or, ideally, kept both!

  • @adamthebatmanwest
    @adamthebatmanwest 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    When you got revealed on that 10 movement I would've taken the high road around Moria and just gone in next turn. Only 2 corruption and you can prooooobably risk it. 3 tiles on 1 reveal with only gollum is a little to much for my taste

    • @WarOfTheRingChamp
      @WarOfTheRingChamp  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's an interesting idea! I honestly didn't really consider stalling myself out of mordor for a turn to do that, but maybe I should have. I could have gotten hit by Cruel Weather and Nazgul Strike, too. I felt like I had to hurry, and just hoped that the stronghold tiles would be eyes. But maybe you're right, that it left me in too precarious of a situation.

    • @Zarl451
      @Zarl451 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This is an interesting play, but by the time you've committed to the 4th move I feel like you've made the calculation Shadow is winning either T7 or T8 militarily you need to get into Mordor this turn to have a hope.
      If you think you can go a turn later anyway, the 4th move is probably a risk too far.

  • @Zarl451
    @Zarl451 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    T5 I think you made the right decision on the 4th move given how the first 3 moves went.
    Looking at board state Shadow military win T7 seems plausible and 8 is probably certain.
    If you get into Mordor start of T6 that's 2 turns to climb - fast, but doable.
    If you don't get to Mordor till T7 then you need to buy at least another round in the military game to last till T9. Not sure how you make that happen with a couple of C dice.

    After the second attack into HD at minute 48:30, I noticed that you did not call a Gandalf shine. Is it assumed in high-level play that he will shine unless you say otherwise?

    • @WarOfTheRingChamp
      @WarOfTheRingChamp  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Fair point. It's not technically assumed, but in a situation like that, it seems pretty obvious? I usually state "If there is 1+ Nazgul, Gandalf will shine by default," but maybe I didn't do that this game. Maybe someone would have tried to get me on a super technicality, but we weren't playing that way; it was obviously best for Gandalf to shine, and if they had any questions, they could have confirmed, "Is Gandalf shining?" But we both knew he was, so it was a tacit understanding. This feels a little different to me than Worn with Sorrow and Toil, but maybe it's not? For whatever reason, people seem more willing to accept that WWSAT can be forgotten, while Gandalf is assumed to be shining. In a digital client, the client would just ask at the beginning of combat: is Gandalf shining? We might want to consider revising our tournament rules on this topic, since it can create bad feelings if there is a misunderstanding. Fortunately, we were both on the same page here! But technically, I think you're right that they could have said "Oh, you didn't declare Gandalf was shining, so I'm rolling my leadership."

    • @mrkhansen
      @mrkhansen 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks for the clarification! As someone who only plays regularly in person I appreciate the additional sub-context your videos provide around etiquette for if/when I ever try the java client. It's interesting to see what is and is not assumed. The WK draw is always called out since it could influence whether a player presses or not, but to me the shine is equally weighty since it influences leadership and the availability of Nazgul combat cards. Maybe that's because not pressing is a far more common occurrence than not shining. Worth mentioning that in this particular case they rolled three hits on the combat roll, so the shine would not have made a difference to the outcome either way. Anyway, always love your uploads. @@WarOfTheRingChamp

    • @WarOfTheRingChamp
      @WarOfTheRingChamp  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@mrkhansen Totally agreed that Witch King must declare if they're pressing before they draw a card. But in real life, I draw the card face down after playing one, so I don't forget! You can't do that on the Java client. :) Definitely check out the Java client if you want to play against a very strong group of players worldwide, and get a game any time of day or night! :)

    Hello! Just watching this - you don't add the tiles back to the hunt pool when you get to Mordor - is this a tournament rule? I thought that all were returned! Thanks in advance! Really enjoy your analysis and picking up some major pointers!

    A tough one to watch! You could tell from your tone at the very beginning that you had lost the game, but of course caring about the game and playing a great one matters more in the end than any particular win or loss ^^ And hey, I think having one more action token might have made the difference at a few spots, you were playing on hard mode!

    within the first 6 minutes, could you not use a character to move dale to OFR then use scouts to retreat into WLR?

    If this game has one flaw, it does seem that it can deny Will the West way too easily for way too long. As a result you could be sucking wind on only four dice for much of the game even while playing very well. Nearly every other type of odds seem to even out over time by comparison.

    New to learning the game, why at this level are the expansions not included?

    • @johnschmidt1262
      @johnschmidt1262 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I asked that also, a good part is personal preference. Also the second expansion would probably be inappropriate for tournaments, it adds more bookkeeping and more units to an already big game.
      The first expansion has a better case for tournaments, but even so the base game is plenty big. Some people may prefer adding an expansion but everyone can agree that the base game is just fine.

    • @WarOfTheRingChamp
      @WarOfTheRingChamp  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      There are definitely players who enjoy the expansions, and I do too, at times. But I guess I mostly feel like the base game is complex and balanced enough, and even after 300+ plays, I'm not tired of it as-is. :)

      How would you have played it differently? I was worried about losing militarily if I took too long to destroy the ring. There are risks either way! If I had some muster dice, I might have tried that route instead.

      @@WarOfTheRingChamp Far be it from me to question one of the top players. I was just noting that moving a lot has its own set of risks. I might have moved more slowly and tried to do more militarily, and then lost even worse/earlier.

I don't feel "questioned," I just want to improve and have fun, like everyone else. :) I guess my question is specifically, at that turn, what would you have done differently? Would you have used a ring for military in some way? This is end of turn 4 at 21:40 and then with the roll on turn 5.
