    I love how the mechanics of the game - the value of the companions, the way they can move, and the rules of how they die - strongly incentivizes you to take these brave heroes of the free people and have them abandon armies at their moments of greatest need and flee in the opposite direction ^^u Those poor men in Umbar, just wake up one morning with a Mordor legion on their doorstep and a note from Gandalf saying "gtg, good luck!"

      Yes, it is a little anti-thematic. Is there some thematic explanation we can imagine? Is there some way that this makes sense?

      @@WarOfTheRingChamp Honestly in the bigger picture it does make sense. If Nazgul descend upon Minas Tirith, of course Gandalf will have to abandon one front for another. It's actually a lot like the movies, the heroes find themselves in different battles, but some of them do get pulled away (Gandalf mustering the Rohirrim, Aragorn raiding the Corsairs of Umbar etc.). I feel like it's not too anticlimactic to abandon one army to assist another, it's actually a decisive and desperate move that in my opinion, is actually thematically congruent with the Free People's playstyle. I could see how sometimes it seems a little careless for a main character to leave a battle, but it is a board game after all so some suspension of disbelief may be required :)

      I genuinely love it when companions run away from battles, haha, it always feels unintentionally hilarious.

    Live reactions:
    54:30 I would consider attacking HD here. Even if he gets a hit, you can leave a regular behind to mess with his movement while creating a 5/5/3 stack. Sure, they're cornered, but that's enough to fight their way out or hold their ground.
    1:06:30 What else to do with a palantir? Bring the elves towards war with Legolas ;)
    1:16:00 Minor optimization, but Gandalf is very unlikely to come back south after this point, so it'd probably be good to move him 4 steps to either W Emond Muil so he can reach Dale/OFR or Easternmet so he's in Rohan for double end threat, or alternatively meeting up with the hobbit there to enable moving him around at high speed
    1:28:30 Why Athelas before Bilbo? With WK already gone, Athelas has a much better combat effect if you do want to force him to respond militarily or get an opportunity at any point. 8 elites plus the companion stack plus Athelas is quite a threat. I don't think Morgul Wound is a good enough reason because it's very unlikely that he'll both have it and for it to be playable while you're still at 3 or less.
    Additional post-game thoughts:
    I feel like SP generally played well, but game was decided by him being too reckless with his minions. Especially the mouth death was very predictable, with both sudden strike and charge being playable for 5 each losing that army can happen VERY fast. At the same time though, I feel the same way about the Gondor attack on Umbar. Without the counter attacks you could certainly take it, but take it and hold it long enough to also take another SH?
    I think it'd be better to stay in Pelargir and keep all those armies occupied and/or being even more effective fighting them until you could strike, potentially at the the two cities if you instead move the north towards Angmar, which is also on the way towards joining up with the elves from Rivendell.
    While SP defended very well, I do think they were a bit too passive. It's true that taking points doesn't matter if you can prevent FP from dunking or getting a FPMV, but putting SOME kind of time pressure on them so they can't draw all their cards and can't wait for the perfect time to move is still worth it.

    Not everyday you see Dwarves and Northmen in Gondor, you couldve had a mixed army of all 5 nations if you really focused on it 😉

    This video is a must-watch for everyone who grew tired of WOTR lately.
    It shows how much space remains unexplored, how many battles are still unfought: the scale of this game is absurdly huge and it can be different if you allow the plot to go off the rail by losing grip on your strategy.

      Thank you for the kind words, Branston! Glad you enjoyed them. Though I regret playing so poorly in my 1st game against CircleDakkon, I think all my other games were good, and the end result is something I can be proud of!

    More and more, if I have the opportunity to crown Aragorn on turn 1, I'll do it. The game is more fun with Aragorn as king.

    What a good game! I loved these last 2 games showing off FP military (my personal fav way to win). I was wondering if you're going to cover the finale games for this series?
    Also maybe this is too spicy but, a fun thing to do in a dedicated FP military attempt is to also seperate out Gandalf since he is a captain of the west and use him in a super early aggressive move, especially if you can get Aragorn turn 1.

      Yes it feels good to win that way, but it is only viable in about 1/50 games in the base game (unless against a bad player), I am not sure the expansions make it better.

    • @WarOfTheRingChamp
      @WarOfTheRingChamp  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think the chances of FPMV strategy are closer to 10-20% (where you invest a lot in military, and either actually win via FPMV, or stall so long that Frodo can still destroy the ring).
      I usually find Gandalf's card drawing ability + corruption shield is more valuable in the fellowship than out, but I've also seen at least one game where Gandalf is separated turn 1 and was interesting. I just looked for that log, and couldn't find it; if you know of such a game that turned out interesting, feel free to share a link here!

    Should have stayed in Pelargir. Moving out was shadows opportunity to destroy thar army. Primary way to win as Free Peoples is Fellowship. But having a strong military does produce more opportunities for the fellowship to move safely.

    T17, why not just hide and move again and go for the win there and then? With 3 dice in the box the Eye isn't lethal, so it's only the 2 red tiles that stop the win.
    Waiting a turn both risks the final red tile getting into the pool, and the chance Jason rolls loads of Eyes and the Eye becomes lethal.

    • @WarOfTheRingChamp
      @WarOfTheRingChamp  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, this is good analysis! I figured that being revealed gave me a chance to move slowly - if Jason rolls a bunch of eyes, I can simply hide, and not move that round. Also, I figured There is Another Way would let me heal 1 extra vs. a possible Shelob. But overall, I think you're recommendation is the better path, and the chance of an extra red tile being added (or rolling a lot of eyes two turns in a row) outweighs the risk of the 1 extra healing vs. a possible Shelob.

    58:46 Did you consider counterattacking the small army in West Harondor there? Could have wiped out two more Nazgul and set him back a bit more.

  • @strider656wotr

    I wouldn’t play worn with sorrow and toil while the fellowship is at 0. Additionally you’d only get one discard out of it if Gandalf dies. After that it is guide ability 11:34

    • @WarOfTheRingChamp
      @WarOfTheRingChamp  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Fair enough. Playing it when they're at 0 movement in a stronghold certainly doesn't make sense; I think you're right. But I guess you do stall them for a round? Maybe worth it in a weird situation like this. If FP takes a hobbit as a random casualty, then they can cost a card for Worn with Sorrow and Toil. But yes, I agree it doesn't really make sense in this case, unless you know what cards FP is holding. I guess this is a good example of one of the subtle/indirect benefits of going for FPMV.

    I do know having those 2 extra dice from aragorn and gamdalf definitively paid dividends for free peoples.

    54:45 Why not attack Helm's Deep, and thereby create a monster army there?

  • @NigelIncubatorJones
    @NigelIncubatorJones 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    2:12:48 I'm not following why 2 eyes on the next turn would be deadly for you. You have three corruption left at that point. Drawing an eye next turn would do 2 damage, not 3. The sword you put in the box won't count until after the pull. I know that you know this, so I'm curious what I'm misunderstanding. Or do you mean if he rolls 2 eyes, that would be in addition to the one he's required to allocate, and thus the total would be 3?

    • @WarOfTheRingChamp
      @WarOfTheRingChamp  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah, I meant 2 rolled eyes, 3 total. Sorry for the confusion!
