Diagnosing equipment that loses power after running a few minutes

  • It's not always something big, always look for the little things before spending a bunch of money replacing parts. I was sure this was going to be an ignition problem, probably a bad coil. Here we go over the steps we took to determine what was really happening.
I realized later I didn't mention that bigger motors need more fuel flow and there are different filters for different types of motors.
Thanks for watching! If this helped, SUBSCRIBE! It's free and it helps us make more (and better) videos. I do my best to respond to all comments. Thanks

I was thinking fuel filter right away but I like the process of elimination you showed us. Coils can be difficult to diagnose sometimes too... quit when hot or run irregular. But You nailed it Bill! well done!!

It's fun to show the process sometimes. I see too many people throwing parts at machines nowadays. Closing the spark gap to check the coil is a trick I was taught back when I worked in an engine shop.

I was thinking coil , great job bill

I was thinking coil too. I had to stop and think when the plug trick said it was OK

That dip in rpm has a distinctive sound, I've heard that before it's always been fuel flow so far. Great diagnosis and repair video bill

Hopefully it will make people slow down and think rather than run out for parts. 🙂

My backpack blower was doing that exact same thing. I replaced the carb and i no longer have this issue. Its been running fantastic for well over a year now. I do only run red Armor and ethanol free fuel. Great job diagnosing this blower.

I didn't say anything in the video but I was sure I was replacing the fuel diaphragm in the carb next. I was thinking "well, the filter looks bad, let's try it before going deeper."
I am prepping a couple videos on fuel right now.

@@GuysPlayingWithTools yeah it was weird, at the time my blower was only a couple months old and developed that issue. It was so frustrating. I tried a new filter, plug, and it still was having the problem. So I finally bought an OEM carb and problem solved. The weird thing is the carb didn't look that dirty. I even ran it through a cycle in the ultrasonic and that didn't help. I don't know maybe it was a defective carb?

@@garyalensr I think you are 100% right on this one. I see this now and then where a machine isn't that old, and the fuel gasket has a bubble in it that shouldn't be there. I don't know if they are re-using parts or trying to save money buying cheaper gaskets. OEM doesn't mean what it used to, sigh.

@@GuysPlayingWithTools Sounded like a carb issue to me right off but I'd had to give it the old run around just to see.

@@garyalensr HI Gary and hope your hopping high! I paid $140 for a jetted carb from Ebay for the opposed twin Vanguard on my Craftsmen to get rid of that stock surging carb. That did it. Remain calm and stay after it!

You got the mic issue fixed! Nice diagnosis Bill. I was not thinking the fuel filter. 👍😎🥇

I kinda like the new mic, it was letting me idle the blower and talk at the same time. I sound funny doing it but that's a bonus LOL
I was expecting the coil to be the problem but I went in thinking it would be a diagnostics style video and I suppose got what I wanted 👍

@@GuysPlayingWithTools I think you did good as throwing a new coil at would be alot more than a $2 fuel filter and still woulded have fixed the issue! 👍

I weas sure it was going to be the coil or the plug. It was unusual so I thought it would be a good video diagnosing it.

Good deal, Bill. The old loggter/sawyer here used coat hangers to braze with. Scarfed up every one he coud find. All mine are wood/metal or plastic. Progress? Not really, just like everything else. Stay cool, Pal!
