Guys playing with tools
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 6 ส.ค. 2021
This channel is for the guy working in his garage on his own equipment. You don't need to be a mechanic or own a hundred tools to take care of 99% of the reasons your equipment won't start. I do my best to avoid tools that most guys(and ladies) don't have.
Sometimes we move away from the garage and tackle other home projects.
All information presented in our videos is for informative purposes only. Please use common sense and wear the appropriate safety equipment and use caution while repairing or using any power tools or yard equipment. Everything we do is in a well ventilated shop, or outside. If you are working in your garage, open the door before pulling the cord.

Cub Cadet LT1045 - Fuel line and carb replacement
This nice little Cub Cadet LT1045 came in as a "No Start". The fuel lines were completely clogged and the solenoid on the carb was hung up so we replaced both and got her running pretty quick.

It's not always something big, always look for the little things before spending a bunch of money replacing parts. I was sure this was going to be an ignition problem, probably a bad coil. Here we go over the steps we took to determine what was really happening. I realized later I didn't mention that bigger motors need more fuel flow and there are different filters for different types of motors...

Nice project Bill! Is that a flip project or fix for a customer? Very nice looking tractor. 👍🚜🇺🇸
I like that trick Bill! Blowing through the fuel line 👍🏾
Even works on cats(not injected though)
@@GuysPlayingWithTools Sweet👍🏾
@bigsonslawncare The bonus is that you can check the age of the fuel, by taste. 🙄
Bill it looks like that mower set up longer than Big Son's at Krispy Kreme. 🤣 I had a LT-1045 given to me 2 weeks ago, same Courage engine too. 👍
If you need to do the fuel line, it's 3 tie straps and 2 minutes time. (Gotta love that, but it doesn't make good video). It's in great shape, I thought about selling my JD and keeping it but after testing, I changed my mind. It has the turning radius of a limousine Edit: for Big Son, the difference between a good day and a great day is all about the girl at Krispy Creme giving him a few free doughnut holes. 🤣

How did I fix a screw that’s been overtightened and I lost seal there
@alicialewis9001 airbox to the carb? If it were me, I would take the screw to lowes and find one a bit larger(not much, just a little). It's either that or replace the carb, so you aren't going to hurt anything trying
Good deal, Farmer Bill. I was known to clip the pin on those solinoids and let them pop. Have a FINE weekiend and try and stay calm. I shall myself.
@lewiemcneely9143 I have heard of it, but I worry too much to try it on a machine I might never see again(at least that's the plan when I sell them) 😁

Great fix Bill. I am still messing with the 18HP B&S I emailed you about but I am getting closer....found that the governor rod was stuck closing all fuel/air from getting to the engine. Hopefully after charging the battery it "should" turn over. I will keep you posted, thanks for all your help I truly appreciate it.
@larryz24 Is good to hear you are getting closer. Be patient and take your time, and it will be easier. When I am doing a project like this one, I remind myself that all the time.

now I have just replaced a STHIL KM91R carb and it starts but will not stay idling unless you give it gas or choke it 1/2 choke. just haven't gotten around to tuning it yet. hope its not all waste. also if you don't have those special adjust tools you can try an electrical but connector to turn it with needle nose plyers in some cases
@dfields9511 If it's idling at 1/2 choke, then it's probably good, but still a little thirsty. Back the L out a bit until you can turn the choke off and then tune as usual. I haven't tried the electrical connector, but now, I have to try it 🙂
@dfields9511 Side note, the new Stihl carbs are failing all over the place. Cheap aftermarket are actually better. (It hurt to say that, but it's true )
@@GuysPlayingWithTools cool that’s what I got an aftermarket one
@@GuysPlayingWithTools it works if you don’t have the tool. It’s a little more difficult to do but it will work depending on how the adjustment screws are shaped

I like to start a bit low. This way, you know it's probably low when you start testing, and you won't go back and forth any more than you have to. (If that makes sense?)
Pull starter stuck
Good point. I may not have said it well enough when I covered that part. If it moves a little and retracts, it's *usually* OK. Of course, there is always the exception. 👍
How come this metod to be called "fast"? 😉
It only takes a couple hours if it's not caked on like this one was. I used it to show the method because it was the worst I had ever seen.
Nicely explained Bill, I’m sure it’ll help loads of people
Thanks, I hope so. You are in the UK, right? We are going to be there next weekend. 🙂
@GuysPlayingWithTools Great idea!!! I have seen how good white vinegar removes rusty classic smaller car parts.
It works surprisingly well. Use POR15 pdq after you are done to seal it, and it will last forever. 👍
Nice explanation Bill! If its under 100F in texas , you had better put a jacket on! Lol. 😂📽👍
Thanks. The temperature is messing with me this week. It was a normal 104-106 last week, and now the high is 93 today. It might be aliens 👽 🤣
Great info! what solvent do you use in ultra sonic to clean out the carb?
You will love this, 85% tap water, 15% Pine Sol. It works great, doesn't discolor parts and makes the garage smell clean.
Good video on the how to along with detailed techniques. Thanks Bill!
Thanks! I waited a while for the right piece of equipment for this video. 🙂

@@GuysPlayingWithTools you got that right Bill 💸💰
Don't forget to clean the emulsion tube. That dirty jet you removed has an emulsion tube behind it. Just tap the carb and wiggle it out. It has several small wholes that benefit from a small wire cleaning.
@MikeMike-is2hl You are completely correct. I am usually good about showing it, I accidentally edited out that part and didn't catch it until days after it was released
Great job Bill, that is pretty much my method for setting slow and fast operation. Cheers.

You got it! Mine runs but needs to put new gas in the tanks. Glad you didn't freeze up with the 95's.! Blessings to you 2!

@lewiemcneely9143 You can't fool me. You are probably on the beach chasing bikinis until your wife reels you in on vacation. 😁
when you turned the choke did you turn it from “start” then started it, and moved it to “run” before giving throttle?
Yes. When it's cold, it needs a bit of choke to start, and with a stock carb, you *usually* have to slowly ease off the choke after starting. Once they have a few hours on them, you can usually choke it, start it, and turn off the choke all at once.
One tip is please include the size wrench or sockets you use to make it easier for us.
@thewiseguy7100 You are 100% right. I am usually good about it, but I will make it a point in the future
Side note, these are pretty much build with 4 wrenches, 9/16 through 3/8 👍
1:03 What size wrench is that for the muffler?
It;s been a while but I am 95% sure that was a 7/16. It seems that I use the 7/16 and the 3/8 for almost everything on a McLane(or any Briggs motor) and occasionally 1 1/2 and 9/16
What is wonky
@54bouchard Wonky is something that is kinda wrong, off center, not working exactly right. I travel quite a bit and pick up the local dialect sometimes. 🤣

Jee wiz yall! I don’t even have the extremely cool un bolting tool for the main bolt that holds the blade in place.. but it would help me tremendously if anyone could give suggestions on how to loosen the bolt to a chick with a hand held wrench 😂..
My gut is saying WD-40
I retired that air ratchet in favor of a battery impact gun a year or so ago. If you have someone that can lend you a battery impact(3/8 works great), it will spin right off. If not, take it to O'Reillys or Autozone and they will happily loosen it for you for free 👍
Hi...where did you get the magnet?
You can get them at most auto parts stores. They usually aren't out on the shelf, so you will have to ask about them. I stick one to each mower and never lose nuts and bolts this way.
No clear view of the work you did, missing important areas like disconnecting/reconnecting the cable. Why did you use a battery powered screw driver for something that didn't need anything stronger than a cheap hardware store manual screwdriver? It looks like the video started in the middle of the story, exactly why were you replacing the carb? Once you got it going it was CLEARLY not running properly.
It's a 2 year old video, I was still learning camera angles in the beginning. If you prefer cheap tools, that's OK, but with a little practice, you can learn how to work more efficiently with power tools.
I have a echo chainsaw 87 G1 series don't know how to adjust carburetor
The stock carb on an 87 G1 has stops that limit how far you can turn the screws but if you look on the left side while holding the handle, you will find an access slot or hole(s) for adjustment. If it has been sitting a while, you may need to do a carb rebuild ebuild or replacement first. This video shows adjusting a chainsaw carb from the beginning after replacement. m.th-cam.com/video/hM8JyV77dKM/w-d-xo.html&pp=ygUqVHVuaW5nIGEgY2hhaW5zYXcgYWZ0ZXIgcmVwbGFjaW5nIHRoZSBjYXJi Chainsaws are all the same when tuning, and this one needed a few tweaks before it was right, so it's a good example. Let me know if or helps. 👍

another good fix my neighbor put too much oil in his mower and smoked like crazy and foweled the plug. ended up just changing the oil and using 16 oz HD30 + 4 OZ oil stabilizer. its a older Tecumseh LV195EA on a lawnboy. it smoked a little after that but was good to go it must be like 20 years old and still going.
The oil takes a few minutes to burn out of the muffler when that happens. I used this one for trim work this morning, no smoke at all after a couple minutes

@lawrencecarroll2031 I am usually good about putting a drop or 3 of oil in them before I put them on, I dunno what I was thinking on this one. 🙄🤣
Are you getting too many screws to take off and to put back on? I wouldn’t remember how to do that ha ha ha.
The trick is to isolate the parts so none wander off. It can drive you crazy when you buy a kit that has replacement bolts in it, and they are still sitting there at the end.
What kind of winch is that
It's a 3/8 air ratchet. Batteries have come a long way since then though, I switched off to a battery impact about a year ago
Thank you! Even though all the parts and pieces weren't quite the same, I was able to replace my cable in minutes! (And I may be the least mechanically gifted person you'll ever meet.)
They do vary a bit from year to year. Once you get a good idea of how they go together and what to look for, it gets a lot easier 🙂 (I love getting comments like this!)
it should still work without air filter cover... right
Sure, but I wouldn't want to run it in the driveway or yard that way, lot's of dust gets kicked up and it would be rough on the motor.
im not a tecky guy so i might just scrap it, it would probably cost me more to fix it than to just by a new one. i got this from home depot it was on there discount shelf after being repaired.. it def has alot of power when it worked
It might surprise you how easy it is to throw a carb on one of these. I go at 1/2 speed when the camera is running so I can explain what I am doing, When it's off, a carb replacement takes me about a minute. You don't have to be a "motorhead" at all. A new carb is usually around $15 on Amazon.
I have a older homelight bx90 bandit that runs fine when the choke is in the sweet spot but off choke i give it full throttle it bogs out
@LoganHester-1489 That means it's not getting enough fuel. It needs either a carb rebuild or a new carb. A new one is under $15 on Amazon and super easy to install. Take the old carb off and put it in front of you while ordering so you can make sure you get the exact one. A dozen different carbs will fit, so be careful while picking out the right one. 👍

Yes bc of airborne dust eats up the cylinder
You definitely want an air filter out in the yard, it's pretty rough on the motor to suck all that dirt in.
hey no one wants to work on my homelite 26b blower... its not that old WTH.. any help in coconut creek
Sure! what can you tell me about it? Did it sit for a while? Does it try to start?
Thanks so much for showing this, I'm learning.
2 stroke carbs are pretty easy to rebuild. Make sure the passages are all clear and lay the fuel gasket and metering diaphragm on the desk in front of you when ordering parts so you can visually match them up and you will be good to go. You can buy cheap carbs on Amazon too if you aren't comfortable taking one apart. Don't let anyone tell you they don't work, I have done it hundreds of times with no problems at all. (again, have the old carb on the desk when ordering and make sure they are identical, by picky!)
@@GuysPlayingWithTools Actually, I'm trying to understand how carbs work. I already ordered a new carb for (pressure washer). We got it on and cranked, there was smoke coming out the exhaust. It soon cleared, but seemed to not be revved up enough, so my husband proceeded to adjust the screw that I think controls the fuel stream. Meanwhile I was busy pressure washing to see if it seemed to have as much power as it did before the break down. (We also put on a new water pump) Ran for about 5 minutes, thinking it might be revved up too high. Turned it off and noticed the screw had fallen out! He screwed it back in, with it's spring. Still, it seems revved up too high, and I wonder if something inside the carb got damaged from backing the screw all the way out? When he pulled the cord it seemed to catch a little, (did something from the carb get loosened and get in there?) had not done that before. It did finally crank, but I think I'll have to look at the carb again because something is not right. Sorry to be so long winded.
@karenbearden6198 It's all good. Send me an email at Bill.jarboe@charter.net, and I will give you/your husband a call tomorrow(pick a time) and we can go over carb basics. Once you see how they work, they get really easy really fast. 👍
