Why your Pressure Washer won't start...and how to fix it!

  • This video addresses the #1 reason a power washer (or other small engine) won't start following storage...old fuel has resulted in a clogged carburetor main jet. I've seen this dozens of times, and I will show you how to get your machine running again. Thank you for watching Buck's Small Engine DIY, putting the "Do" into "Do-It-Yourself."

Yesterday my new neighbor asked to borrow my pressure washer because his wouldn't start, then mine didn't start... I watched your video, both had clogged up carbs. Now both are working. So this is a two for one! Thank you. Subbed. 👍

I have a Craftsman power washer that has the same plastic carburetor. I've taken it apart, watched your video 3 times, getting ready to put it back together to see if it will start. Already took the top off and cleaned the flywheel and magneto and verified there was spark. The last thing I checked should have been the first. Thanks for the informative video!

Hey Buck. I offer sincere thanks and appreciation. You indeed saved yet another small engine today. I watched your video. I then proceeded to take off and clean the carburetor on my pressure washer, which I hadn't used in two years. I cleaned it out, reassembled it, and it started like a champ. It was the first time I've worked on a carburetor. So kudos to you, sir. You're making a difference in the world. Thank you.

No plastic on mine. I have a ryobi with a honda engine. It was an actual metal carb lol. It did not have much to unscrew then i noticed an area to unscrew the bottom jet which was behind the bowl drain screw. Once I took that out a brass tube fell out with the holes that needed cleaning. Pay attention to the direction that goes back in first. Did not have that fancy wire that you had, but used some very small stripped speaker wire and tunneled through the holes. Sprayed with the carb cleaner, put and all back and bam... I was ready to bring to a small engine mechanic, but this saved me time and money. Thanks Buckwsr.

I was completely frustrated and really upset that I couldn't get my pressure washer to work for nothing I tried everything I tried spraying it with carburetor cleaner and I tried priming it as much as possible and I even tried putting new gasoline in it and that still didn't work my friends came over to try to help me and they didn't know what was wrong with it somebody even said it might be an electrical issue or the spark plug so I cleaned the spark plug and I looked at the electrical and everything looked good and then I found your video and I did exactly what you said to do in the exact same way and I even took pictures so I wouldn't mess nothing up like you suggested and after all that I put it all back together and it worked after four pulls just like you said it would thank you so much I'm so grateful for your video and I will always turn to you if I need some small engine advice thank you so much you have made my day and you have made some kids very happy too.

Did this today! Had no confidence in myself or a positive result. Fired right up after.

Thank you !!! Just watch this video after trying to start my pressure washer for over an hour I drain some nasty stuff out of the carburetor and it started right up just from those drain bolts

It`s a great tutorial! Can you advise, please? Our model equipped with a low oil level switch for the engine protection. It was working perfect last time, but now it can`t start. I checked spark plug- no sparks. The plug itself is good. My guessing is a problem with this oil level switch. Is there any method to localize the real fault, please? Thank you

Karcher Tecumsrh starts on first pull and runs fine. Ten minutes later job done. Then it will not restart. Could this be ignition coil, unloader valve, gas cap. Used basically once per year so up for sale once repaired. Thanks.

You can prevent the winter storage gum up. Run it dry and introduce ATF into the carb by whatever method works best. Next time, put gas in the tank. It may run rough until the ATF burns off, but it works.

Thanks for the video. I took my carburator apart and cleaned every little hole I found. The big issue I had was sand some how fell into the gas tank. I think the wind may have blown it in while I filled up the tank. Running beautiful now after draining the gas and cleaning the tank.
Hey can you do a video on how the Carburator springs should be hooked up. I find that some times the vibration losen the springs and want to make sure they are going in the right place.
    Thanks again.

Thoughts on type of gas to use. Do you think that regular gas can be used if an additive of Stable is added or should racing gas be used on small engines? Thanks!

It helped a lot, but I'm not confident enough to try and take it apart, although I did clean out a carburetor on my lawn mower.
