      You're not wrong, but given this is intended to be entertainment as well as informative I had to keep video length in mind, and also not make it too complex. But you have a good point and in hindsight I probably should have tried to wrangle that in somehow.
      Still, the wet rock and dry rock tests help smooth out the numbers overall, so I think it still ends up being useful - if only indicative rather than scientific!

    That was awesome bro, what I really would have liked to of seen is rerunning the first few tires after you ripped up the proving grounds for an even playing field. That was a badass tire test though…real good

    • @RCTNT
      @RCTNT  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks :)
      If it helps to know, the first few tires were the worst performers, so rerunning then at the end would probably have yielded even worse results. It worked out well this way, thankfully! (I'd probably have had to rerun the first ones if they'd done really well!)

    What an incredible test for such priceless info! Thank you for taking the time to do this. Much appreciated.
    I woulda liked to see maybe 2 of the first tires tested ran again after the track has been "groomed" to see if they perform better after the trail has been torn up. I feel like they may have done better after.

    • @RCTNT
      @RCTNT  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Nick, it was an interesting one. The track got worse over the course of the day, so I tried to test the worst tires first and left the better ones to last. I think we'd have found those first ones would have been even worse on the torn up ground.
      Either way, we got some good info out of it. Don't miss the follow up to this one, my Wet Tire Test, it's linked in the description. It pulled all three tests together and gave a good overview of the outcome.
      Lastly I have even more tires I've been stockpiling all year. I have what may be the biggest 1.9 tire test on TH-cam coming in 2023. Stay tuned!

      Unfortunately the stock Gen 8 V2 tires test poorly on most surfaces so far.
      However, they're not out yet. RC4WD Intimidator will help with surface traction testing in the upcoming tire test series and who knows, maybe they'll be great on gravel or dirt. We shall see!

    I'm new to your channel and LOVE this video! I geek out on testing like this. It's been a year so I hope you'll do another test on a new batch of tires... use your G8 again and that trailer, in the same spot. Maybe re-use the top couple of (1.9) tires from this test to help set a baseline due to conditions, but then I'd personally love to see the BFG Krawlers in G8 compound (this is what I run, and they seem awesome), and the new Vanquish VXT2. If they're out, also do the Mickey Thompson Baja Pro X (in 1.9... the 2.2's are amazing on my Ryft). Great job!!!!

      Thanks! Yeah I've been thinking about foams. I think I'd use the same set of tires and try a few different sets of foams and antifoams and just pneumatic, etc, on a closed course. See how the scores go, times, etc.
      Am currently filming with another 8 sets of tires for the series, so we'll have quite a bit of data when it's all done! Cheers

    Hi interesting watch I'm starting to get what you mean when you say testing is important very impressed with the longer run tyres as there setting of on a looser surface at the start so there launch must be down on the earlier runs but once they get beyond that first ridge they really dig in and go .
    I kinda thought that compound wouldn't come into it but God how wrong am I (I'm very new to all this crawling business but learning fast)
    Now really looking forward to your further testing in the wet and the mud .

  • @YoShImUrA53
    @YoShImUrA53 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Woo, mamooth test! I was a bit wary of how after each run the soil compactness would change and affect results, as well as how aggressively your different lines kept the rig's momentum, towards a better result.
    Another concern I had that probably was too much work to do is foams, both in documenting which ones are being used, as well as using a "control foam" for each set.
    You can never have laboratory conditions when dirt or soil is in the mix, but I think it's being very interesting to see the differences, as I could still grab some ideas from it! Thanks for the hard work!
    Did you notice your front Growlers were installed opposite to the rears? (Y-shaped pattern is running in the opposite direction. Check the underside pic to see it clearly) Maybe if either side are reversed, you'd get all four "collapsing laterally" rather than only the rear, and I'm convinced performance will be quite different when using them in one or either direction. Maybe they need a second chance to prove themselves?

    • @RCTNT
      @RCTNT  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Eagle eye! I did notice the Growlers were reversed in front, yes - after the test was all finished! I swapped them round and went back down and gave it another go. They didn't crease up, only the rears did - and the distance was about the same, so I let it be.
      Dirt was hard to deal with each time. I jumped on it to compact it after each run and you'll notice the best scores came at the second half of the test for the most part. Again I think this was good enough for an indication. Definitely not scientific, for sure, but with dirt, what ya gonna do?
      Foams. Yes. This one is a giant amount of work to test. Changing tyres is my all-time least favourite thing to deal with, for a few reasons. So I don't know if I'll ever do a foams test - the pay-off for all that effort may not be justifiable. But never say never, I do agree it would be useful data to have!
      Driving my best each time would never be scientific, but I hoped that doing two runs with each would be good enough to be indicative of performance.
      As always, thanks for your attentive and thoughtful comment. Very much appreciated indeed!

    Very nicely done for such a large task. My only thought was that more time would equal a more comprehensive comparison. As in several different sports, a second run with the order reversed would mean that those tires that were tested early (better conditions?) would then be evaluated last (poorer conditions?) with results averaged. This might also negate the variations in the path of attack - tight or wide around the corner, etc. That said, I applaud your efforts, and expenses, in putting this together. I found it very helpful. Thanks. (By the way, please tell your dog I said "hi".)

      Tully appreciated the pats. Dunno if she knew they were compliments of David S, but it's ok, she isn't picky!
      Thanks for your thoughtful comment. My thinking was, time was a necessary limiter in order to give an indication on of performance. Regarding order, for what it's worth, most of the worse performing tires went first, so reversing order afterwards would serve only to increase the gap between them and the better tires.
      It wasn't scientific so much as indicative. Make sure you catch the Wet Tire Test that follows this one, as there's a range of performance across different rubber on different surfaces.
      I've got 8 more sets I'm currently testing with now, too. Those videos will be coming soon!

      I'll add those tires to my list, no problem.
      For what it's worth regarding the ground getting worse, the two worst performers were at the start of the test, so presumably their results would only be worse if repeating with them at the end.

    I know this is a year old video and someone has probably already said this, but the reason there is mud on the bottom of the tires is because as the wheel is coming to a stop, it picks up dirt, there isn't enough momentum to throw the mud off. Hi Aaron, glad you're getting something out of my videos and you've made a fine choice on the Redcat. I just looked up your current car to see about the battery question and you appear to have lipo not liion batteries. Those batteries are small for the fast car you've got there but should be fine with the Gen 8 V2. If you end up wanting longer run time you can always get a bigger 3s battery or a similar sized 2s battery - 2s will give you longer runtime but lower speed. Cheers

      If it's 3x 18650 cells it'll be fine. I'd be more concerned about them in the original car as liion doesn't have a particularly high discharge potential (that is, it can't dump a lot of power in a short time as well as lipo can). It'll be fine for a crawler though.

      Read the comments on this video and you'll see a similar concern multiple times. You're right - but if it helps, the earlier tires had the best chance of good performance. However, the earlier tires did the worst, for the most part.
      Not much I can really do about it with this kind of test. Consider it indicative rather than scientific and hopefully you'll get something useful from it! The follow up Wet Tire Test video brings everything together a bit anyway. Cheers :)

    I hate to say this but, I did my own tire shoot out and found that my heaviest wheels could make the 2nd place tire be almost if not as good as my best tire on a light rim

    • @RCTNT
      @RCTNT  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's logical. But then what about your best tire on a heavy rim? It'd be better again, right? The tire performance results are indicative rather than scientifically absolute, of course, too.
      And I got the same results as you found but with my worst tires - just look at my latest video (SCX10 III Gladiator with heavier wheels).
      Thanks for raising the point. Weight down low matters for sure. Cheers!

      The Gen 8 V2 comes with a Flysky GT3, so that's what I used for a while. I've since bound it to one of my GT5 radios, but honestly the DumboRC radios are great too. I find the GT5 more comfy in the hand than the various DumboRC radios here but they're all similar overall.
