Money For Northing - Dire Straits was iconic and deserved a mention at least same goes for Losing My Religion - REM, Black Hole Sun - Soungarden, Anything by Linkin Park and Radiohead
I'd have put Beat It and Billie Jean above those. Jackson could have been the entire list. Heck, Black or White was extremely innovative with the merging of faces, races and cultures.
100% agree with you! The blood at the end on the faces of the children sends shockwaves though an important issue of mental health and violence in schools.
100% should be on this list. I saw her on Christmas day in third grade and I’ve never been the same since. That first mind blowing rock and roll moment.
From historical aspect these are 10 videos that made crucial impact on the video music industry: 01. The Buggles - Video Killed The Radio Star 1981 02. Duran Duran - Girls on Film 1981 03 & 04. Michael Jackson - Billie Jean & Thriller 1983 05. Dire Straits - Money For Nothing 1985 06. Aha - Take On Me 1985 07. Kate Bush - Running Up That Hill 1985 08. Peter Gabriel - Sledgehammer 1986 09. Madonna - Vogue 1990 10. George Michael - Freedom! '90 1990
You left off Duran Duran but all in all this is a great list. I would probably rearrange the number listing on a few but all deserve to be on this list. Duran Duran were video gods of the 80s.
Ah yes, a trip down memory lane and the days when MTV truly was Music Television. MJ is my all-time favorite, but Rhythm Nation proved that little sister Janet could be just as fierce.
@@JadenKaye Scream is a really cool song with a lot of personal meaning behind it for MJ, but I don't think it would make very many people's Top 20. My favorite "lesser known" songs by MJ are Stranger in Moscow and Earth Song and Black Cat by JJ. What are yours (besides Scream)?
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR MENTIONING WHAT MTV REALLY SHOULD BE!!!! Sorry for shouting that, but SOOOOO many people forget about MTV’s actual purpose! Though it has become a terrible reality trash bin, what it used to be was an all music channel
You had hardly any videos from the 80s, the peak of music videos. Cyndi Lauper: Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, Dire Straights: Money for Nothing, Duran Duran: Hungry Like the Wolf, Run DMC: Walk this Way, The Buggles; Video Killed the Radio Star
MJ would have a whole plethora of music videos that can become a contender for this list. Black and white is one of the earliest music video that has utilised morphing, Stranger in Moscow with all it's slow mo art, Scream... I mean, Scream. Do I need to say more?
For entire collections of work in music videos, Annie Lennox/Eurythmics, Kate Bush, and Björk would be definite contenders. They not only helped pioneer the music video genre but they proved to be visual (and even gender) chameleons, transforming into different characters and personas with each song.
@@amberjohnson4820 Actually, from a pure Video view, I'd prefer, Björk-wise Humand Behavior and Army of me. Best Eurythmics Video should be Beethoven. Or just take Little Bird for that gorgeous fight of Annie's Stage Personas
I totally agree. I feel this list is more base on what Rolling Stone, or the likes of similar magazines, are defining what "Greatest" to them. So many other videos have pushed boundaries that are not well know in America will never get a honorable mention, less be in a top something and be appreciated for the piece of art that hey are.
@@benefit1984 I think this list is very American-centric. We might see a different list if this was made from a British or European perspective. I think Kate Bush's "Running Up That Hill" should be included because it was one of the first that combined modern dance with pop music in a music video. Also, notice how there's only one Asian act that made the list. For entire bodies of music videos, I would add David Bowie as a contender.
@@craiggie1628 I have notice. Probably because that song was really popular there. And yes Kate would be great to explore for a much international list. One that I think I would of love the American people to discover, especially if they knew french, is Mylene Farmer. And her Video Désanchantée was quite something for it's time. First, the length, from a 5 minute song made into a +10 minutes video clip, inspired by Dicken's Oliver Twist, hiring more that 120 children with disabilities to play in. It was one of the most expensive one at the time, I remember reading about it. Unfortunately, there isn't much info about how much it did cost on the Net it seems. But it was a pretty huge production. Video like that should be on a list at least.
Paula Abdul's "Cold Hearted Snake" full version will always be in my top ten. And the absolute campiness of Olivia Newton-John's "Physical" is beyond iconic of the 80s!
Of course, Thriller should be no 1, but it's hard to appreciate now how ground-breaking Vogue felt at the time. We would play it over and over and over.
I was in 6th grade in tiny town in New Mexico. The day after it was aired, ALL of the kids were talking about. They had even hyped a release date, so that created even more dramatic tension. That being said, though, Micheal Jacksons "Billy Jean," was the video that actually defined is persona and look. Thriller was defineatly a "thrill," but I think Billy Jean and the epic street-fight dane of Beat It were is true seminal and definitive music vides. I talk about them on my music-theory channel here actually. I was also shocked that there was not mention of The Eurythmics! // Thanks for you comments! // - _The Acoustic Rabbit Hole_
I think there's nothing eally groundbreaking about it other than the length of it. It's like a Broadway show piece, really. The song is great. There are so many other videos that really pushed the envelope visually.
I would have also included Black Hole Sun by Soundgarden (Brightly Colored Smiley Creepiness!) No Rain by Blind Melon (The Bee Girl 😀❤️🐝) Stayin’ Alive by The Bee Gees (John Travolta’s iconic strut 😍) Money For Nothing by Dire Straits (computer technology was innovative for its time) Mr. Roboto by Styx (Creepy and Cheesy at the same time! 🤣)
Awe now I'm sad. Just started the video, was so happy to see November Rain but to know Black Hole Sun isn't on the list... 😭 Seriously one of the most memorable videos for me!
I would have added Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers "Don't Come Around Here No More" paying tribute to Alice in Wonderland. From Eurythmics’ Dave Stewart, as a ‘shrooming, sitar-strumming caterpillar. to Alice being eaten alive as they cut into her like a piece of cake, it truly was one of the coolest and creative video's made during the 80's.
I would like to add a few honorable mentions: "Deutschland" & "Zeit" both by Rammstein, "Sweet Dreams" by Eurythmics, "Money for Nothing" by Dire Straits and "Clint Eastwood" by Gorillaz.
There are just so many worthy that didn't even get HM: *Jeremy* - _Pearl Jam_ *Virtual Insanity* - _Jamiroquai_ *Freak on a Leash* - _Korn_ *The Great Beyond* - _REM_ Basically _any_ video ever produced by _OK Go_ (at least y'all got their first one on the list, but seriously, every video of theirs is a work of art).
Other iconic MTV to consider 1.) You Might Think - the Cars 2.) Big Time - Peter Gabriel 3.) Unforgettable - Natalie Cole/Nat King Cole 4.) Just The Way You Are - Bruno Mars 5.) Cold Hearted - Paula Abdul
Take On Me is the best music video in my opinion. The effects still hold up and look great today and it has an enjoyable plot. Having said that, I can absolutely accept it losing out to Thriller.
They both can compete for the 1st place, but Thriller came first and pretty much revolutionized MTV and the way videos were made, in terms of concept, structure, and production. The massive popularity of Thriller gave record companies the confidence to expand the budget and to invest on more ambitious projects.
It had to be Thriller. The release of that video was an *event* of the scale of a large sports event - like the World Cup & the Olympic opening ceremonies.
Meatloaf - I would do anything for love Cars - You Might Think Backstreet Boys- Larger than life *NSYNC - Bye, Bye , Bye Toni Basic- Mickey Avril Levine - Girlfriend, Best Damn Think, What The Hell The Tubes-She’s a Beauty Bon Jovi -Living on a Prayer Tom Petty- Don’t Come Around Here No More Buggles- Video Killed the Radio Star Huey Lewis and the News- If This Is It, Stuck with You Mike and the Mechanics- Silent Running The Bangles - Walk Like and Egyptian ZZ Top, Legs, Best Dressed Man And many other 80s and original MTV music videos deserve to be on this list.
Even if they won't say it, it's nice of them to limit the list to one per artist. Otherwise, the real list would be topped by like 7 straight Michael Jackson videos.
@@nathanieljohnson5908 Michael, Madonna, DIre Straits, and pick something so the bubble gummers and 14 year girls are represented (you got those just cut them down to make room for the real talent).Gungnam style would fit the bill and it's pretty good in a vacuum anyway.
No doubt Thriller is no1. Here are some of my favorites. Korn. Freak on a leash Gorillaz. Clint Eastwood Oasis. Champagne Supernova Pearl Jam. Jeremy Jay Z. Hard Knock Life. Tool. Sober
Others that deserve a mention: Video Killed The Radio Star // The Buggles Leave It // Yes Money for Nothing // Dire Straits Since U Been Gone // Kelly Clarkson Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.) // Katy Perry No Surprises // Radiohead The Scientist // Coldplay Loser // Beck Bed of Roses // Bon Jovi Float On // Modest Mouse Thunderstruck // AC/DC I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) // The Proclaimers Subterranean Homesick Blues // Bon Dylan Everybody (Backstreet's Back) // Backstreet Boys Total Eclipse of the Heart // Bonnie Tyler Thinking Out Loud // Ed Sheeran We Didn't Start the Fire // Billy Joel Uptown Funk // Mark Ronson ft. Bruno Mars Jump // Van Halen Jump // Kris Kross
Yes! My beloved Robert Palmer....so sexy & debonair! I had the privilege of sseing him in concert (as part of The Power Station) one of my all-time fave concerts; he gave a STELLAR performance. I miss you, honey 😪
There are quite a few videos more worthy to be on this list. Subterranean Homesick Blues - Bob Dylan Can You Feel It - The Jacksons Hungry Like the Wolf - Duran Duran Losing My Religion - R.E.M. Enter Sandman - Metallica Closer - Nine Inch Nails It's Oh So Quiet - Bjork Sober - Tool Freak On a Leash - Korn Somebody That I Used To Know - Gotye
Ooo, I forgot about Gotye, & Tool. They both have a host of videos that should be on this list. I also named Freak on a Leash, but as REM _videos_ go, I feel Great Beyond was better than LMR (even though LMR is one of the best songs ever made, and certainly of the 90s). As songs go, I'll take Bang & Blame & Bittersweet Me. Given your apparent taste, I am surprised you left *Jeremy* off the list though.
Several videos that should have made this list instead: Like a Prayer (I like Vogue, but this is a classic); Opposites Attract by Paula Abdul (or really any - it’s a travesty not to considering her dancing skill) ; Land of Confusion by Genesis (more claymation genius set to an extraordinarily deep song); Freak on a Leash by Korn (generally not my type of music, but the concept was just incredible) ; Virtual Insanity by Jamiroquai and Scream by Michael and Janet Jackson
With respect to Beyonce's career, I think that the 2nd place deserved to other music video most transcendental in pop culture. I mean.. baby one more time top 16? Really?? Even Vogue defined a whole generation and still remains in place.
Oh, please! Beyoncé's spot is well deserved. Her videos don't just define pop zeitgeist but impact the culture with its social message. Britney's video was just fluff cute video.
Pick the bottom 20 from then and they'd knock off everyone but MJ and Queen in this list. It appears the standards have slipped for what's "top", it has to be a least good to make any "top" list. Or it's like the top 10 music videos of 1682.
Bohemian Rhapsody ought to have come in higher! Glad to see Shake it Off, Buddy Holly and Bad Romance representated, and Take on Me in the top where it should be! Great Work!
The most memorable and influential music video of all time is Robert Palmer's Addicted To Love. I just saw LOVE ACTUALLY which had a take on it. One of my all time favorites is Cyndi Lauper's Girls Just wanna Have Fun.
"Tonight, Tonight" by The Smashing Pumpkins should've been on the list. It's widely considered one of the greatest music videos of all time because of how it recreates the iconic French silent film A Trip To The Moon.
People forget that Christopher Walken was a dancer earlier in his career, and he clearly hadn't forgotten that beginning. But as to MJ and "Thriller", when you hire top-notch production, musical, or acting talent like John Landis, Rick Baker, Quincy Jones, and Vincent Price, it will be hard to NOT make a memorable video.
Janet Jackson "Again", Celine Dion It' s all coming back to me now", Michael Jackson "Scream", "Earth Song", "They don' t care about us", "Who is it", "Beat it", Smooth Criminal" and "Dangerous", Meat Loaf "I would do anything for love", Madonna "My substitute of love", Bjork "Isobel", Duran Duran "Come Undone", Chris Isaac "Blue Hotel" and "Wicked Game", Annie Lennox "No more i love yous", "Shade of Pale".
That is my fav Celine Dion song! It's all coming back to me now. Both instrumental and vocal amazing and the mix together. But I cannot remember the music video.. have to look that up and watch :)
Besides Vogue, of all of Madonna’s visual masterpieces, I must say that Madonna’s videos for “Frozen” and “Ray of Light” are beyond amazing & unbelievable creative!! These videos from the late 90’s surpass anything I’ve seen in the current batch of repetitive, mediocre videos, where Madonna is obviously the catalyst for their inspiration….. So sorry Taylor, Beyoncé, Ariana etc….
My List: Spark - Tori Amos Try - P!nk Running Up That Hill - Kate Bush So Pure - Alanis Morissette Die Another Day - Madonna Ray Of Light - Madonna Vogue - Madonna God Control - Madonna I Miss You - Björk Wait For Me - Moby Lazarus - David Bowie Corporate Cannibal - Grace Jones
can someone tell me how this list doesn't have most of MJ's music videos? Remember the Time, Beat It, Smooth Criminal, Bad. I mean the guy brought MV to the world.
Tom Petty's "Don't Come Around Here No More" was a fantastical, creative and hallucinogenic take on Alice in Wonderland, while Dire Strait's "Money for Nothing," was simply a masterpiece that combined animation with live action. And they were both pretty great songs! Honorable mention to Petty's "Into The Great Wide Open," featuring Johnny Depp and Faye Dunaway.
“Top 20 Greatest Music Videos of All Time”?? Not at all!! This list was put together by someone from genetation Z and absolutely doesn't know the great productions of the 60's, 70's, 80's! On this list there is no Led Zeppelin, A-Ha, Pink Floyd, Beatles, Scorpions, Donna Summer, David Bowie, Dire Straits, Rolling Stones, Rod Steward, Laura Branigan, Marvin Gaye, AC/DC, Faifh no more, IceHouse, Duran Duran, The Hollies, The Doors, Eric Clapton, Gary Glitter, Steppenwolf, Annie Lennox, Bonny Tyler, Tears for fears, Lionel Richie, Ted Nugent, Skid Row, Whitesnake, Prince, Brian Ferry, Sade, George Michael, Ozzy Osbourne, Van Halen, Bee Gees, Phil Collins, Michael Bolton, Frank Sinatra, Nazareth, U2, Al Green, Foreigner, Creedence, Deep Purple, Red Hot Chili Pepers, Peter Frampton, Kate Bush, Judas Priest, Elvis Presley, Richard Marx, Sting, Metallica, Chuck Berry, BB King, Ray Charles, Bruce Springsteen, Double, Blondie, Suzanne Vega, Cindi Lauper, Bruce Dickinson, Simple Red, Tina Turner, Grace Jones, Def Leppard, Robbie Williams, Depeche Mode, Debbie Gibson, Heart, Yes, Information Society, Simple Minds, George Michael, Julio Iglesias, Hot Chocolate, Mr. Mister, Janis Joplin, Chris Isaak, Alice Cooper, Motörhead, …
It's no surprise that Michael Jackson was number one... the bigger question was which Michael Jackson video would be it because frankly, half this list could(and should) be Michael Jackson videos.
You sound like you're from the UK. Who did the UK ever produce beside the Beatles, David Bowie, Billy Idol, the Who, Peter Gabriel, the Rolling Stones, Elton John, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, Radiohead, Queen, The Clash, Eric Clapton, Van Morrison, Fleetwood Mac, Dire Straits (always thought they were German for some reason), and Phil Collins, take that smart guy!
Glad you included George Michael, but I would have gone with "Father Figure" instead, not just for the beautiful music but also the different layers of meaning and gay repression.
You missed one of the most profound videos of the 1990’s. Prodigy - Firestarter! And for that alone you get a thumbs down! What about 1982 eurythmics- sweet dreams? Massive Attack - Teardrop? Simply only 3 that are better an Most on this list!
Vogue should be number 1. No other video uses the back lighted, high drama that was used in classic movies of the 30s and 40s. It creates a mood unlike any other. Another video, Garth Brooks in the raining bedroom. Both stir emotions unke others.
I am missing definately "Cry" (Godley & Creme), "Sweet Harmony" (The Beloved), "Money for Nothing" (Dire Straits) and "Video kills the Radio Star" (The Buggles)
As soon as I saw what this topic was on, I said " Take on Me, and Thriller are gonna be somewhere at the top of this list!' There are SO MANY great, and fun videos out there. But I've always had a place in my heart for Take on Me. Im a pre-teen and teenager of the 80's , so I grew up listening and watching it. When Thriller came out , my junior high school actually had a Thriller day, and they played the video for the entire school, it was so much fun. But that's how big it was. Now, Take ona ME meant so much to me, that when my mom passed away 2 years ago, I wasn't going to go to her funeral because I couldn't handle it. I was gonna be a mess. But God had been helping me to cope, and after I decided I wasn't going to the funeral, the idea popped in my head from no where, " Go to the funeral, and just sing the song Take on Me in your head as loud as you possibly can, over and over, untill all the sappy stuff was over. And I did just that , and it got me through her funeral. I didn't shed a single tear! So now, the song has an even stronger meaning to me. ❤

100% agree with you! The blood at the end on the faces of the children sends shockwaves though an important issue of mental health and violence in schools.
@@samkingsway6564uncut version shows....a bit more.
100% should be on this list. I saw her on Christmas day in third grade and I’ve never been the same since. That first mind blowing rock and roll moment.
From historical aspect these are 10 videos that made crucial impact on the video music industry:
01. The Buggles - Video Killed The Radio Star 1981
02. Duran Duran - Girls on Film 1981
03 & 04. Michael Jackson - Billie Jean & Thriller 1983
05. Dire Straits - Money For Nothing 1985
06. Aha - Take On Me 1985
07. Kate Bush - Running Up That Hill 1985
08. Peter Gabriel - Sledgehammer 1986
09. Madonna - Vogue 1990
10. George Michael - Freedom! '90 1990
agree
Absolutely agree! Early days of MTV that started it all. High school and college days, good times 😊
Whitesnake - Here I go again
Good selection... VOGUE though should have been higher up the list. It is simply timeless and still so beautiful 33 years later. Incredible.
Thanks for sharing!
Not one Duran Duran, Eurythmics, George Michael, Prince video? How about Dixie chicks? Terrible list. Whoever made this list should be fired. Smh
@@holdensmokinat least they included Gangnam Style though 🤡😂😂😂
Make your own video.
Yes, even though I am SO not a big Madonna fan, that video is beautiful
No Prince? KISS, Cream, and When Doves Cry come to mind. Also, Robert Palmer's video was in the top 20 of all time for me.
Gett Off was huge, too.
Yep! The underrated genius.
Hear hear on Robert Palmer video deserving a mention, at least.
You left off Duran Duran but all in all this is a great list. I would probably rearrange the number listing on a few but all deserve to be on this list. Duran Duran were video gods of the 80s.
They had heaps of great clips.
Loved Girls on film
Wild Boys was always one of my favorite
I would have thought A View to. a Kill would have made the list.
Ah yes, a trip down memory lane and the days when MTV truly was Music Television. MJ is my all-time favorite, but Rhythm Nation proved that little sister Janet could be just as fierce.
Here here!!!! ❤❤❤❤❤
What about their collaboration in "Scream?" It's exclusion is an insult to both Jacksons.
Honestly it's a crime that Beyonce is higher on the list than Janet. Rhythm Nation tops any Beyonce video in my opinion.
Mojo started watching MTV in 2006
👍. Man oh man! Those were the classics!
Those all sucked tho...
Girls Just Wanna Have Fun! Best ever.
MJ would have a whole plethora of music videos that can become a contender for this list. Black and white is one of the earliest music video that has utilised morphing, Stranger in Moscow with all it's slow mo art, Scream... I mean, Scream. Do I need to say more?
Right smooth criminal bad Billie Jean remember the time scream black and white. This whole list could’ve been him or him by himself
Yup Madonna is the same way. Vogue is her best maybe for casuals but definitely not her best video overall
I forgot, Pat Benetar, "We are young", Michael Jackson's "Smooth Criminal"
For entire collections of work in music videos, Annie Lennox/Eurythmics, Kate Bush, and Björk would be definite contenders. They not only helped pioneer the music video genre but they proved to be visual (and even gender) chameleons, transforming into different characters and personas with each song.
Definitely! Especially Sweet Dreams and Violently Happy by Bjork. I totally agree!
In my personal top 10, too!
My vote for Straight Up
The 80s had so, so many videos that could have made this list. Madonna in particular made a lot of memorable ones. Duran Duran also.
Robert Palmer, Addicted to Love deserved an honorable mention
Obnoxious sexist video BUT it's visually stunning and I agree with your suggestion. The song is great too.
Great songs and he always had his guitar playing girls along side
Of course, Thriller should be no 1, but it's hard to appreciate now how ground-breaking Vogue felt at the time. We would play it over and over and over.
I agree! To me it should have been Thriller number 1 and Vogue number 2
Agree Vogue should be higher
Vogue was amazing and created a completely new dance style.
exactly nirvana above madonna dont think so
@@kittyowlblu it didn’t create anything it was inspired by an already existing style… plus i’ve never seen anybody dancing like that in the mainstream
A-HA a one hit wonder!? Maybe in the US, but in the rest of the world they had a dozen hits and a very long career!
True. A-Hal doesn't get respect in America.
Yeah!
Agreed. I was rolling my eyes at that comment
18 top 40 singles in the UK x
Americans believe the whole world revolves around them. That’s why very few Europeans actually respect their opinions
I agree that Thriller being # 1 it's still LEGENDARY
🙌👍💜🎵🎶 Amazing.
I would have also included
Black Hole Sun by Soundgarden (Brightly Colored Smiley Creepiness!)
No Rain by Blind Melon (The Bee Girl 😀❤️🐝)
Stayin’ Alive by The Bee Gees (John Travolta’s iconic strut 😍)
Money For Nothing by Dire Straits (computer technology was innovative for its time)
Mr. Roboto by Styx
(Creepy and Cheesy at the same time! 🤣)
Nope 🤣
Black Hole Sun all the way!
when the party's over should be there too
Awe now I'm sad.
All videos by Madonna, Björk, and Michael Jackson should be on the list, amazing visual artists
There are just so many worthy that didn't even get HM:
*Jeremy* - _Pearl Jam_
*Virtual Insanity* - _Jamiroquai_
*Freak on a Leash* - _Korn_
*The Great Beyond* - _REM_
Basically _any_ video ever produced by _OK Go_ (at least y'all got their first one on the list, but seriously, every video of theirs is a work of art).
Other iconic MTV to consider
1.) You Might Think - the Cars
2.) Big Time - Peter Gabriel
3.) Unforgettable - Natalie Cole/Nat King Cole
4.) Just The Way You Are - Bruno Mars
5.) Cold Hearted - Paula Abdul
Cold hearted 🎉
The Boys of Summer-Don Henley
Nope 🤣
Finally someone wrote "you might think - the cars" that was a so innovative video also "Big Time"
Take On Me is the best music video in my opinion. The effects still hold up and look great today and it has an enjoyable plot. Having said that, I can absolutely accept it losing out to Thriller.
If it had to be Thriller, I can be at peace with it
They both can compete for the 1st place, but Thriller came first and pretty much revolutionized MTV and the way videos were made, in terms of concept, structure, and production. The massive popularity of Thriller gave record companies the confidence to expand the budget and to invest on more ambitious projects.
It had to be Thriller. The release of that video was an *event* of the scale of a large sports event - like the World Cup & the Olympic opening ceremonies.
@@carl_anderson9315 facts
@@nicholashylton6857 agree. Its as a global shock wave
Meatloaf - I would do anything for love
Cars - You Might Think
Backstreet Boys- Larger than life
*NSYNC - Bye, Bye , Bye
Toni Basic- Mickey
Avril Levine - Girlfriend, Best Damn Think, What The Hell
The Tubes-She’s a Beauty
Bon Jovi -Living on a Prayer
Tom Petty- Don’t Come Around Here No More
Buggles- Video Killed the Radio Star
Huey Lewis and the News- If This Is It, Stuck with You
Mike and the Mechanics- Silent Running
The Bangles - Walk Like and Egyptian
ZZ Top, Legs, Best Dressed Man
And many other 80s and original MTV music videos deserve to be on this list.
Even if they won't say it, it's nice of them to limit the list to one per artist. Otherwise, the real list would be topped by like 7 straight Michael Jackson videos.
He would have the number 1 spot but I would argue Madonna would have more in the top 10
@@nathanieljohnson5908 Michael, Madonna, DIre Straits, and pick something so the bubble gummers and 14 year girls are represented (you got those just cut them down to make room for the real talent).Gungnam style would fit the bill and it's pretty good in a vacuum anyway.
Sad that Christina Aguilera's Beautiful wasn't featured on this list. There are some questionable choice on here, but okay
No doubt Thriller is no1. Here are some of my favorites.
Korn. Freak on a leash
Gorillaz. Clint Eastwood
Oasis. Champagne Supernova
Pearl Jam. Jeremy
Jay Z. Hard Knock Life.
Tool. Sober
Paul Simon's "Just Call Me Al" was wonderful, important, no, but fun and the height difference between he and Chevy Chase was hilarious.
Others that deserve a mention:
Video Killed The Radio Star // The Buggles
Leave It // Yes
Money for Nothing // Dire Straits
Since U Been Gone // Kelly Clarkson
Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.) // Katy Perry
No Surprises // Radiohead
The Scientist // Coldplay
Loser // Beck
Bed of Roses // Bon Jovi
Float On // Modest Mouse
Thunderstruck // AC/DC
I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) // The Proclaimers
Subterranean Homesick Blues // Bon Dylan
Everybody (Backstreet's Back) // Backstreet Boys
Total Eclipse of the Heart // Bonnie Tyler
Thinking Out Loud // Ed Sheeran
We Didn't Start the Fire // Billy Joel
Uptown Funk // Mark Ronson ft. Bruno Mars
Jump // Van Halen
Jump // Kris Kross
You should have made the list
The Verve - Bitter Sweet Symphony
@@SvendrysI could listen to that on repeat for hours.
Nope 🤣
when the party's over aswell
Bad Romance and Bohemian Rhapsody and Thriller and Sledgehammer are my favorites on this list and Take on me.
Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” is still one of my several favorite music videos of all time.
It's the gold standard of MVs
Smooth Criminal is also the most creative, researched, cinematic, stylised, wonderfully choreographed and directed music videos of all time!!!
Michael definitely deserved at least two mentions, and this should have been the other one!
No David Bowie? Come on! Jeremy, by Pearl Jam, Black Hole Sun, by Soundgarden, and Clint Eastwood, by Gorillaz should be in the honorable mentions!
Literally my line
Good list. I would include: Money for nothing by Dire Straits, Simply irresistible by Robert Palmer, and Zombie by The Cranberries.
Yes! My beloved Robert Palmer....so sexy & debonair! I had the privilege of sseing him in concert (as part of The Power Station) one of my all-time fave concerts; he gave a STELLAR performance. I miss you, honey 😪
There are quite a few videos more worthy to be on this list.
Subterranean Homesick Blues - Bob Dylan
Can You Feel It - The Jacksons
Hungry Like the Wolf - Duran Duran
Losing My Religion - R.E.M.
Enter Sandman - Metallica
Closer - Nine Inch Nails
It's Oh So Quiet - Bjork
Sober - Tool
Freak On a Leash - Korn
Somebody That I Used To Know - Gotye
Ooo, I forgot about Gotye, & Tool. They both have a host of videos that should be on this list. I also named Freak on a Leash, but as REM _videos_ go, I feel Great Beyond was better than LMR (even though LMR is one of the best songs ever made, and certainly of the 90s). As songs go, I'll take Bang & Blame & Bittersweet Me.
Given your apparent taste, I am surprised you left *Jeremy* off the list though.
@@ilshaguides Someone else already listed it in the comments.
@@728huey yeah, but I'm sure they read at least _some_ of the comments. Power in numbers! Take up arms, and roar! 😁
Bohemian Rhapsody deserved higher than it got, 'it made history' yet it's that low?
Vogue struck a pose for the rest of the years to come
@@Blitze9792 Exactly. At least in top 10.
Oh, please! Beyoncé's spot is well deserved. Her videos don't just define pop zeitgeist but impact the culture with its social message. Britney's video was just fluff cute video.
Y'all are so obsessed with her, people are forever gonna give her the flowers she rightfully deserves, get over it already 😭
This just makes me miss the 80s and 90s even more. So much innovation!
Pick the bottom 20 from then and they'd knock off everyone but MJ and Queen in this list. It appears the standards have slipped for what's "top", it has to be a least good to make any "top" list. Or it's like the top 10 music videos of 1682.
Totally agree with you.
Bohemian Rhapsody ought to have come in higher! Glad to see Shake it Off, Buddy Holly and Bad Romance representated, and Take on Me in the top where it should be! Great Work!
Britney Spears definitely deserved to be on this list. Glad to see her here.
👍 I had liked her music when she first had started in the pop music business. Man! That was epic!
Don’t call A-ha a one hit wonder.
American perspective, unfortunately.
Not every American. Cast In Steel is such an amazing song
The most memorable and influential music video of all time is Robert Palmer's Addicted To Love. I just saw LOVE ACTUALLY which had a take on it.
One of my all time favorites is Cyndi Lauper's Girls Just wanna Have Fun.
I love the Robert Palmer videos. Addicted to Love and Simply Irresistible! His background ladies were mesmerizing!
"Tonight, Tonight" by The Smashing Pumpkins should've been on the list. It's widely considered one of the greatest music videos of all time because of how it recreates the iconic French silent film A Trip To The Moon.
I love that video.
Make your own video.
You are totally right.
I think missing is Billy Joel’s “We didn’t start the fire” and the “We are the World” videos.
We are the world was a sleeper 😴😴😴

Where is Groove Is In The Heart by Deee-Lite?? That was truly an iconic video and helped usher in all the 60s and 70s-inspired fashions of the 90s
Gangnam Style scored better than QUEEN? Good lord.
Thank you for the audio description, as I am a TH-cam watcher, who is Blind, unable to have seen the videos.
I'd like to see also Everlong (Foo Fighters) and Return to innocence (Enigma) included in this list!
Return to innocence is the second most beautiful song I've ever heard. The first is the theme to the game Morrowind,by Jeremy Soul.
Queen... Only #19. Unacceptable.
WHAT????!???
I agree that's beyond unacceptable
Besides Vogue, of all of Madonna’s visual masterpieces, I must say that Madonna’s videos for “Frozen” and “Ray of Light” are beyond amazing & unbelievable creative!!
These videos from the late 90’s surpass anything I’ve seen in the current batch of repetitive, mediocre videos, where Madonna is obviously the catalyst for their inspiration…..
So sorry Taylor, Beyoncé, Ariana etc….
If Vogue isn’t on here as top 5, this list is BS.
Nirvana, Janet Jackson, Britney Spears, Michael Jackson, TLC (T-Boz, Chili, and of course Left Eye) , Beyonce, they're amazing❤❤❤❤❤❤
Paula Abdul's "Straight up" music video should be in the list.

Try - P!nk
Running Up That Hill - Kate Bush
So Pure - Alanis Morissette
Die Another Day - Madonna
Ray Of Light - Madonna
Vogue - Madonna
God Control - Madonna
I Miss You - Björk
Wait For Me - Moby

Corporate Cannibal - Grace Jones
Foo Fighters "Learn To Fly" was a criminal omission.
can someone tell me how this list doesn't have most of MJ's music videos? Remember the Time, Beat It, Smooth Criminal, Bad. I mean the guy brought MV to the world.
Simple it's aimed at teenage girls
I knew that Michael Jackson would be number one. He always had the most iconic music videos.
He’s Not Called “The King Of POP” for No Reason 👑

Same. I had a feeling Thriller would be number 1
I wanna dance with somebody and girls just wanna have fun are images that come straight to mind when I think of the 80s

It's no surprise that Michael Jackson was number one... the bigger question was which Michael Jackson video would be it because frankly, half this list could(and should) be Michael Jackson videos.
I worked on hurt. Cash was amazing. We knew he was at the end it was very moving. He was a legend.
I feel like Missy Elliot should be represented here. She was a visionary.
Best music videos should be done by decade.
Did I just heard that A-ha is some kind of one hit wonder... Let me guess, Americans thinking that the whole world is USA?
You sound like you're from the UK. Who did the UK ever produce beside the Beatles, David Bowie, Billy Idol, the Who, Peter Gabriel, the Rolling Stones, Elton John, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, Radiohead, Queen, The Clash, Eric Clapton, Van Morrison, Fleetwood Mac, Dire Straits (always thought they were German for some reason), and Phil Collins, take that smart guy!
I enjoyed your ironic comment!
I say “The Boys of Summer” by Don Henley should have been included
The techno version by DJ (somebody). Damn! I don't know what the name is.
I am missing definately "Cry" (Godley & Creme), "Sweet Harmony" (The Beloved), "Money for Nothing" (Dire Straits) and "Video kills the Radio Star" (The Buggles)
Petty, Don’t Come Round Here No More and A-Ha, Take on Me
"Come Into My World" by Kylie Minogue should be also on the list, a great music video.
Michael is the king of music videos, especially lengthy ones 💯👑 ❤️ 🎼
RIP Left Eye, MJ, Freddy, George, Biggie, and Kurt
As soon as I saw what this topic was on, I said " Take on Me, and Thriller are gonna be somewhere at the top of this list!'
There are SO MANY great, and fun videos out there.
MISSING these:
No surprises - Radiohead
Virtual insanity - Jamiroquai
Around the world - Daft Punk
I'd Do Anything for Love-Meatloaf; Freedom-George Michael; Janie's Got a Gun-Aerosmith
What a great walk down memory lane....now I feel sorry for those who didn't experience the MTV era...😊
