George Michaels stole the concert performing “Love of My Life” flawlessly, where he drew in the crowd to sing the lyrics with him just as Freddie had always done. He was definitely channeling Freddie when he sang it. Two powerful performances, but definitely the Live Aid performance should have been in at least the top 5, if not at number 1. The entire world stopped what they were doing to watch Queen.
So sad that MTV doesn’t play music anymore. My parents used to pull me away from MTV because I would sit for hours and watch videos and listen to music. Now, you can’t pay me to watch MTV.
Same. I remember when MTV greatest hits played tons of songs from decades earlier (in the early 90s) and I could watch that for hours. I watched MTV Europe it was completely in English I learned so much from that (I'm I Austrian we speak German)
I honestly get chills every time I watch Queen's performance at the "Live Aid" concert. Freddie Mercury had such a captivating stage presence that he virtually had all of those thousands of people eating from the palm of his hand. What and experience, and what a moment in time!
The best part is that people weren't sure if Queen could put on a good show without their big lighting rig and pyrotechnics, but Freddie oozed charisma and proved the doubters wrong!
@@frankocean6676 nobody asked. We’re talking about important music events, not comparing bands. Fr tho, why do you have to be so pressed to the point of commenting out of topic? Smh.
@@stellaphantom366 all their fans dont even listen to other bands they just watch that movie and act like they are greatest thing ever i mean pink floyds worst album is better than queens best album
@@frankocean6676 yeah I totally agree, the fans are annoying as heck, but a lot of true fans who respect other bands exist, including me. Please please please don’t generalise every Queen fan, and tbh you should know how to differentiate between the real fans and fake fans. And we’re talking about Live Aid, which is arguably one of the best and most important live performances of all time, so yeah they do deserve to be in the top 3 of this list and their live performance isn’t overrated in this case. If you’re saying that just because of one movie and not because of the band’s talent and work in the past, sorry to say but that’s kinda hypocritical. The issue here is that this is under a reasonable comment about Live Aid and not an annoying Queen comment (that’s a different story), so you commenting out of topic doesn’t make you any less annoying. And dude, I respect your opinion, but as much as I love Pink Floyd and think that they’re the gods of albums, I have to strongly disagree with you saying PF’s worst album is better than Queen’s best... PF’s worst album is pretty weak, mediocre at best (if you’re talking about AHM or Ummagumma), while Queen’s ANATO has at least 8 out of 12 songs that are really good (and 3 of them are hits) so it’s a pretty strong album.
I remember MJs moonwalk on the Motown special. I couldn’t believe my eyes! The whole country was blown away. MJ said that Gene Kelly called him that night to tell him what a phenomenal performance it was.

@@stockman1514 no. Beatles changed the world. They were the first with so much talent. And other bands coming later were fans of the Beatles. Check it. You'll see.
Beethoven actually wrote the 9th symphony based on his prior knowledge AND by feeling the vibrations from the different notes. And there are actually other deaf composers who have used this method to write music as well. Beethoven's life story is actually really inspiring.
Evelyn Glennie is an accomplished musician with xylophone glockenspiel etc, and is profoundly deaf. She has a gift of touch sensation call it what you will.....
Michael, Kurt, Freddie, Eddie... There's so many of them, and God listening to music these days just hurts my heart, but it won't stop me from enjoying their legacies despite the troubles they faced in their lives. A hero's pain is the world's joy Also, screw MTV, Sony and Tabloids for destroying Michael Jackson
That’s when it started to be televised and seen and heard by much much MUCH more people. Same concept as how everything got bigger once the internet came around art just became a lot more accessible
Yeah, if you’re going to stretch it back to Beethoven then what about Mozart & Bach? Even popular music: when Irving Berlin’s song “Blue Skies” debuted on Vaudeville the audience requested it to be sung over and over and over again - the singer had to encore the song like 30 times before the audience was appeased enough to let her stop.

Happy to see Freddie Mercury made this list twice. He deserves it. He had an epic impact on rock and roll history along with his mega talented band mates Queen!
I’m surprised that the Billie Jean music video being played on MTV didn’t make the list, it was the first time a black artist’s music video was played repeatedly and broke down the MTV racial barriers
david bowie critizized mtv for not playing black artists videos. david bowie always reminded me of michael Jackson for some reason even tho their music is different. they both changed their image often and they were very flamboyant and androgynes(i dunno who to spell that lol)and very good looking
@Jack Nicolas It's not about which moment was more Influential or who is better it's about the moments that brough changes in the industry, like you can actually categorize Music videos before thriller and after thriller and also, the way pop music sounds and how pop music went global after thriller. There's a reason why he is crowned "The king of pop" and has no argument for that title.
@Jack Nicolas it depends on person's taste. If a person is more into pop or hip hop music they don't understand the value of rock or country music and the same way around. Again, the point here is not about who is better, it's about their contribution in the music.
@Jack Nicolas That's your taste, and opinion like everyone has one. Music has different forms, quality, genre, and meaning. Queen, Beatles are a rock band, they influenced the rock genre mostly and as a group who played instruments. Where pop music and artists like MJ is more of a combination of choreography, dance routines, stage visuals, production and Music videoes. Nobody is topping Beatles and queen in the rock game and nobody is topping MJ in pop music and you can't combine or compare these 2 genres and put one over other cuz they carry their own value, form, and impact.
Hendrix version of the Star Spangled Banner literally brings tears to my eyes. A beautiful way to let everyone know that you don't have to love our government to still love our country.
Glad someone else thought to mention Thriller! I remember my family, along with aunts, uncles, cousins and grandmother gathering together specifically to watch the premiere on MTV, it was that huge. To this day, it's the only horror "movie" I enjoy watching. 🙂
Queen at Live Aid. No one could hold an audience in his hand like Freddy. I saw Queen in Chicago on what turned out to be their last American tour. Incredible.
The diversity of artists at the Freddie Mercury tribute concert ks amazing. It proves that Freddie & Queen had an impact on a lot people in the music industry. He is so dearly missed ❤
Who doesn't LOVE THE BEATLES? Did You Know THEY IDOLIZED ELVIS... They met him and stayed for a few hours... At Elvis's Beverly Hills Home Talking & Elvis Played Guitar and sang -- Paul McCartney IS THE ONLY ONE TO EVER PLAY ELVIS'S GUITAR BESIDE NOW AUSTIN BUTLER WHO STARRED AS ELVIS IN THE NEW ELVIS MOVIE!! Paul McCartney Quote: 'Elvis is a truly great vocalist, and you can hear why on this song. His phrasing, his use of echo, it's all so beautiful. It's the way he sings it, too. As if he's singing it from the depths of Hell. It's a perfect example of a singer being in command of the song. Musically it's perfect, too. The double-bass and the walk-in piano create this incredibly haunting atmosphere. It's so full of mystery, and it's never lost that for me. The echo is just stunning. When The Beatles were recording, we'd often ask George Martin for 'the Elvis echo. I think we got it down perfectly on A Day in the Life'. - Paul McCartney -- On August 27, 1965, John, Paul, George and Ringo along with their manager, publicist and assistants came to Presley's house on Perugia Way in Los Angeles to meet their rock and roll idol. The Beatles were the ones who pushed for the meeting.
@@tonyarenee531 You commented you "love the Beatles", however it was Elvis's praises you were singing in your statement. and I was very happy to hear what you had said. Many good artists in the music Industry have come and gone, but if we are going to talk about the most important moments in Music history, to me there was only one, and it was the emergence of Elvis Arron Presley. His musical, social, and cultural impact is unsurpassed. If it wasn't for this incredible and talented man, we would still be all listening to Bing Crosby and Perry Como. Elvis WAS the birth of Rock and Roll, and his echo will never die. A great many of the artist seen in this video have acknowledged that fact, and in reading your comment I think you did too. Thank you for what you had to say. ELVIS.....A Prince From Another Planet. Every Rock Entertainer that came after him,..... wanted to be him.
@ThePURGE you say they are overrated because you haven’t even seen what they’ve done. To actually see what they’re all about u need to dig deep into their stuff and albums and you’ll see why people love them.
Queen at Live Aid was the most incredible moment in music period. Never was a moment in time owned by one man in music more than that day. So much so that Elton John stated , “How the fuck am I supposed to follow THAT???”
I was about to comment “how is the live aid concert not number one?” Then I saw the Beatles and I’m all “oh okay I can see that, but I don’t know what could be better than that” and then Beethoven shows up and then I was all “okay we’ll just leave it at that”
Tbh, I feel like that Beatles live performance should be lower. Like yeah, they revolutionised the music industry, but then, that would be referring more to their discography rather than this performance + it was full of screaming girls which ruined the vibe a bit. Queen at Live Aid should’ve been #2 bc it had more actual impact, especially since it was for a good cause.
3. Queen at the Live Aid 2. The Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show Favorite bands for sure, I love both bands, and I love seeing them both in the same video, one after the other. ❤️
This list is absolutely perfect. Easily one of your best. My favorite moment is a tie. 1a. Michael Jackson's moonwalk 1b. Beatles watched by 70 000 plus people. I still get emotional when I listen to there music.
I was 14 when the “boys” made their appearance on Ed Sullivan. They that night changed the culture of long hair, and they had so many styles of music. I’ve been a Beatles fanatic and the solo music of John, George, The Traveling Willburys A lot of the groups and single artists of the 80s until now got their inspiration from the Beatles . The Beatles will always be remembered for generations to come !
Agreed! I still have an old photo that I took of John Lennon (on our old black & white TV), the first time The Beatles were on The Ed Sullivan Show!! 📺🎸❤
Yeah, The Beatles on Sullivan is #1 and then a huge gap to whatever you want to put at #2. That moment is the beginning of pop music and youth culture being intertwined into the fabric of society which would last until the end of the century before the world “shrunk” due to technology and music in general holding a lesser place in youth/pop culture. That’s why I really appreciate all the movements in modern music that came after The Beatles: psychedelic, heavy metal, prog rock, punk, new wave, and my favorite -being a Gen X’er - alternative/grunge…just to name a few movements/revolutions. Since the end of the 20th century, basically the end of grunge/alternative, music hasn’t had a prominent role in defining or expressing youth culture like it once did. I really miss that in general and think all the generations after X are kind of deprived on that front. The spirit of this truism started with The Beatles on Sullivan which was before I was even born but I fully recognize that and appreciate it. What the Beatles gave us was magical because each subsequent movement/revolution was directly influenced by them. For my generation, guys like Kurt Cobain and Eddie Vedder let this be known in words as well as in their music.
Sorry. Elvis on Ed sullivan is number 1. According to the Beatles number 2 man. Without elvis there would be no Beatles. And just saying as far as live performing. Elvis on his worst day can outperfom them on their best day even at his fattest and drugged out mind. Your guys were nothing special when it came to performing live. They were much better at home in the studio
Didn’t see that number one choice coming…lol. Leaving classical music to it’s own genre, the choice is always between Queen at Live Aid and The Beatles on Ed Sullivan. For me, it’s Queen. It’s very difficult to actually put into words how seismic that performance was and I don’t think it will ever be equalled. A completely unique moment in time where we witnessed arguably the greatest front man in rock history right at the absolute peak of his power.
Johnny Cash performing at San Quentin was legendary for another reason. On New Years Day of 1958 he performed there where country music legend, Merle Haggard was. Merle was in inmate and Johnny's performance inspired him.
Queen on Live Aid should have been #1. The crowd that day were not Queen fans and that’s why it’s a memorable moment in time. Queen and especially Freddie had them eating out of their hand. Live, no auto tune,no special effects. Just Queen!!!! Wow!!!!
A great anecdote about Beethoven conducting the 9th symphony during that performance was that since he had his back to the audience , when it was over, he didn't realize the audience was applauding , till the lead soprano/singer gently turned him around to see the audience cheering wildly. And in true grumpy Beethoven fashion, when people congratulated him in the days following the premiere of the 9th how brilliant it was, he grumbled/complained that he didn't make any money off of it.
I was sick staying home when the 3 nights of Beatles on Ed Sullivan was on. I watched and ran back to bed when my parents came home. Day 2 they felt the warm TV... But I watched day 3 anyway . Changed my life!.
Elvis Presley paved the way for all the musicians you've listed because he was the first artist to break the mould of standing still while singing by moving energetically while he sang. Elvis was also the very first artist to be broadcast on television worldwide via satellite in 1973 with the Aloha from Hawaii concert. Your list is simply incomplete without mention of this.
The 9th symphony will forever hold a special place in my heart. It brings me to tears as I am instantly brought back to the last time I sang it. My jr high and high school choir director had us end every school year with the brilliant mind of Beethoven. He suffered a life ending heart attack between my sophomore year and my junior year. His current class alongside many alumni stood at the front of the church to pay our respects the best way we knew how. RIP Dr. Sether
I remember seeing the Beatles' first performance on Sullivan in '64. I was about one month shy of my eighth birthday. I still have a plastic Beatles wallet from '65.
I am huge Beethoven fan. I love the 9th symphony „the ode to joy“ it moves me to tears every time. What a beautiful unexpected surprise to find it at the top of your list
I think the outfit that Freddie Mercury wears, the white sleeveless shirt, the white pants and the band around his arm, is the most ICONIC outfit he’s ever worn. You just can’t imagine him in any other outfit, at first.
Knowing how the world is today, Freddie Mercury would have been the biggest pop icon not to mention the more music we will never get to hear from one of the most undeniably talented vocalist of all time.
When you mention Freddie's memorial concert then it's an absolute miss to mention anybody but George Michael who stole the show with the song Somebody to love!!!

As much as I loathe the channel nowadays, there is no denying how massive MTV was when it debuted. The popularity of the channel exploded overnight, and lasted for nearly 20 years. In fact, there was a time (around 1983 to 1989) that MTV owned Music. They had major Music Artists BEGGING to have their video played on the channel!!
The most remarkable part of Hendrix at Woodstock wasn't just that he did the Star-Spangled Banner. It wasn't just the passion, it wasn't just the beauty. His guitar Sang The Star Spangled Banner. His Guitar! Everyone was in shock, everyone was in awe, it was gorgeous, it was controversial, it was amazing. He didn't sing a single word! It was a first, and I believe it has never been repeated.
Paul Whiteman's debut of "Rhapsody in Blue." It helped to legitimize jazz as an art form (1924). I would also include (since you didn't exclude the genre in your criteria) "Oklahoma" by Rodgers and Hammerstein. It changed musical theater (1943).
Hearing Hendrix play the National Anthem was something I will never forget! His passing at a young age... saddened my heart. You could have included the world inclusive sing-along of Sweet Caroline by Neil Diamond. That was one musical moment. So many fans making videos with hopes of being included. Those who were, were of all ages, nationalities, races, cultures and creeds. Shows how much the man is loved.
Jimi Hendrix playing "The Star Spangled Banner" at Woodstock was/is awesome! Wish I had been able to attend. Was evacuating for a life-altering hurricane at 12 years of age.
MYV used to be EVERYTHING because you could see and hear your favorite artists without having to buy tickets and attend a concert. It was like having front row seats for every song.

He is so talented and has so much fun on stage. Makes me smile every time. Still rockin and smilin almost 6 decades later.
I think Buddy Holly and the Crickets should be on that list since they were the sparkle that lit the Beatles. The Beatles even took an insect name because of the Crickets. In 1959, before he died, Holly was almost as big as Elvis. He was only 22.
David Bowie's first concert on tv was probably one of the most important music thing that ever happened. He inspired so many people about fashion and being themselves. It also changed music forever.
He was more of an influence in more musical genres than several people on this list including Queen. Plus the concert you’re talking about pretty much created The Smiths, The Cure, Oasis and a hundred different bands and musicians who literally changed the face of music.

Yeah, if you’re going to stretch it back to Beethoven then what about Mozart & Bach?

A lot of the groups and single artists of the 80s until now got their inspiration from the Beatles . The Beatles will always be remembered for generations to come !
Yes, thank you! Some people seem to forget that music existed prior to 1950. A worthy 1st pick indeed!
I gotta think that The Beatles on Ed Sullivan is the #1 most important moment in pop music history. It was such a game changer.
I just turned 3 and I was allowed to stay up to see it- it’s my first memory!
That moment, British music started to take over world.
Beethoven #1. How it should be. Thank you for including a classical work.
Johnny Cash performing at San Quentin was legendary for another reason. On New Years Day of 1958 he performed there where country music legend, Merle Haggard was. Merle was in inmate and Johnny's performance inspired him.
The ninth symphony is something every band member learns in their first year of playing. It is that important.
I can still pick it out on the piano.
Truer words have yet to be shared about music's influence on the world!!!!
Queen on Live Aid should have been #1. The crowd that day were not Queen fans and that’s why it’s a memorable moment in time. Queen and especially Freddie had them eating out of their hand. Live, no auto tune,no special effects. Just Queen!!!! Wow!!!!
Yes! They forgot about Berry Gordy finding Motown Records and James Brown performing at 1964 Tami Show

Just a reminder that all shows before the 90s had no auto tune and most bands didn’t have elaborate lighting displays.
No because the Beatles hold the place for the best entertainers of pop culture
A great anecdote about Beethoven conducting the 9th symphony during that performance was that since he had his back to the audience , when it was over, he didn't realize the audience was applauding , till the lead soprano/singer gently turned him around to see the audience cheering wildly.
And in true grumpy Beethoven fashion, when people congratulated him in the days following the premiere of the 9th how brilliant it was, he grumbled/complained that he didn't make any money off of it.
That was an awesome movie!

Agreed!!!!
Paul Whiteman's debut of "Rhapsody in Blue." It helped to legitimize jazz as an art form (1924). I would also include (since you didn't exclude the genre in your criteria) "Oklahoma" by Rodgers and Hammerstein. It changed musical theater (1943).
Whiteman conducted, but Gershwin composed, and performed piano, for "Rhapsody in Blue."
I literally cried when they announced number one! I love that album so much. It is beautiful from beginning to end.
Saw him in concert, it was extremely beautiful the crowd loved it!
Beatles are the kings, Paul is by far the best. Simply because he never has taken himself too seriously. I love the clip used here, makes me smile every time, because he is just having the BEST time! He is so talented and has so much fun on stage. Makes me smile every time. Still rockin and smilin almost 6 decades later.
SO REALLL
My Dad and family love Bob marley's Songs we went To jamaica on a tour to see His life, records, and Resting place🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲🌺🌺🌺
I think Buddy Holly and the Crickets should be on that list since they were the sparkle that lit the Beatles. The Beatles even took an insect name because of the Crickets.
In 1959, before he died, Holly was almost as big as Elvis. He was only 22.
No. You got it all wrong. Elvis is still KING. Buddy is a BORE. No one would pay anything for Buddy's stuff.
Matthies8431, David Bowie are you kidding me he didn't inspire anyone that I know of. David Bowie was a weirdo and everyone knew that and his music wasn't all that great either. He might have inspired you but he didn't inspire the music industry because he wasn't quite popular enough he was just weird that is all but he was some what popular but not important enough.
@@LovelyPicturesqueLake-jj1eesuch a disrespectful bullcrap comment from you your an empty headed moron bowie wasn't a weirdo he was different and the most unique artist other than prince. bowie's music is great he sold over 100 million albums and he was recently named the selling artist on vinyl it takes great music to accomplish that. bowie influenced madonna, lady gaga, lorde, charli xcx, artic monkeys etc you don't what your talking about 🤡 ✌️
@@NathanaëlAnstadtso true such an amazing unique artist bowie was

I had to do a research report in my music class on an artist who changed or shaped American culture. Each student chose whoever they wanted to do their report on, and I chose Freddie Mercury!!! Because of the paper, it has given me more respect and love for the late artist!
#1: When music was first created!
Dude, that would take it all the way back to the beginning of man with the bone flute
@@maxwellkowal3065, what is music? You take a couple of early humans with rocks, sticks, and a dried gourd or two, and it won't take long before they discover beats and other fun sounds. Once speech evolves, it's inevitable that they're going to form a band and then go on the road. 😁Happy Holidays, stay safe and healthy!
Searched it up and first song ever was called “De”

You just made my husband happy. He's a huge Beethoven fan and for this to be #1 in a list that had everything else, it was amazing. I would love to see someone now take that type of music and put the spin of now on it. Beethoven was an innovator and I would like to think he would approve. The only thing even close was 1956 Chuck Berry's "Roll Over Beethoven."

That first Moonwalk. I know it's a dance move, but man did that change music. Probably.
@Jack Nicolas Most of them were live concerts and full stage performances but for MJ, he made history with just one small dance move.
@Jack Nicolas Everybody knows He didn't create that move cuz MJ himself said that and has given credits to his influencers every time he got the chance. And I didn't say others are not influential I was just saying the influencing form.
I would argue it changed pop-culture but not music. But MJ still deserves a place on the list, no doubt!
I must say Nirvana's MTV unplugged was and still is a complete and undoubtedly masterpiece minute by minute and the song "The man who sold the world" sends chills trough my spine. Such a monster of a song 👌🏽🏆. His performance was flawless as he stated before he started " I'll guarantee you I'll screw this one up" so ironic as it was cemented as one of the greatest rock music moments.
Exactly ❤
I wish we'd bring back real MTV
The old mtv model died with the rise of TH-cam because now you can just look up endless music videos and not have to wait a few hours hoping for your favorite video to loop back around again
@@BigSethTM Yeah I know, but I did like when there were shows that explored new more relatively independent music.....sometimes with horrible videos lol......and I loved how people prefered getting mad about Marilyn Manson and Eminem instead of getting psyched about QAnon.....
