    We've been doing a lot of counter balancing in our shop recently. Adding additional weight ro existing shafts. Mixed results, but a couple customers got the trifecta if distance, dispersion and accuracy just adding 10-12 grams to the butt.

    Great vid as always, thanx! 😀👍 jumbomax is releasing a normal weight xl grip in 5 days. The regular jumbomax xl grip would, I guess, function as a counterbalance weight at 120g. Would be great to gave Matt try them both to see the difference even though I know he does like thin grips... I dont understand why no one is reviewing jumbomax. Sometimes golfers are so scared or unwilling of trying something new. I took a shot and ordered jumbomax xl grips with medium hands 2 years ago and they have given me such control and comfort holding the club... Will order the regular weight xl grips as soon as released.😁 Playing a regular grip now feels like holding the steel...😂😂 Keep it up guys!!

    Thanks for the clarification on this guys. What Ian says at the 14:50 mark sums it up nicely as to why you'd even consider a CB shaft. I was confused as to what net benefit you'd see if you just end up kinda countering the counter balance with more head weight. :) Good stuff.

    This past year I had gone to Jumbomax grips at 90grams and increased the height of my ball flight, it also created more ball dispersion over time. My score started going up and I noticed that I was losing where my clubhead was in the swing. I finally went back to a 56gram oversize grip and the first thing I noticed that my dispersion improved, my ball flight came down and my score improved. I really liked the feel of the Jumbomax but they definitely backweighted my clubs. Backweighting is a uncharted area in golf.

    This video makes me wonder if I should switch to a high balance shaft and add weight to my Epic driver. Head weighs around 198g but I'm using a HZRDUS Smoke. I tend to not like D4/D5 though as my old Cobra was D5 and I really struggled. I switched to Epic because it was lighter.. Hitting it much further and way straighter.

    Totally agree about the build also needing to be right. I gave up off the shelf clubs in 2009, effectively anything I bought needed to be rebuilt. Initial costs might be higher but longer term it pays off as you end up with clubs that are a best fit for purpose. Great content and super informative!

    As a slow swinging old guy, I really enjoy the feel and performance of the stock shaft in a Ping G400 five wood that I found in a used club rack in Florida ( it’s amazing how quickly new clubs become somebodies reject). I believe that shaft is counterbalanced. It seems to reward my slow tempo.

    The point has been made several times that swing weight/head weight is extremely important. It has show up in several videos with Matt hitting different driver heads. I would love to see some input on this swing weight/head weight applied to irons. I assume the importance is the same, but there is so little information about swing weight in irons.

  • @schapediddly

    So correct me if I'm wrong (and maybe this would be a good test) if you played a counter balanced shaft like the one here, AND played it at 44.5" or even 44", you could add even more head weight and get great ball speed assuming the shorter length fit your swing. Maybe this is why tour players have leaned towards the shorter shafts, because then the head weight was up and they got a little extra pop.

  • @CraigalFun

    Question: I like my driver very heavy and am looking "unsuccessfully" for a shaft in the 85-95 gram range any ideas? I have the F8+ with 12&8 weights at 46" Even flow blue 75g, I put about 15 grams of lead tape down the spine of the shaft and it swings so much better. I do typically like a mid launch/spin profile. No worries if no answer. I might have to fly to the North and see in person. Fitters in my area have disappointed me over and over. Thanks fellas

    Such a small amount of extra mass made such a big difference. Is that a common thing to test during a fitting, or is it more likely a fitter will look at a different head and/or shaft to test different swing weights for a client?

    I already have a counter balance shaft. Can I add weight to the head and put, let's say, 10 grams of silicone in the butt end of the shaft in order to obtain a higher recoil weight? I keep the the balance point, but add weight. This derives from me "coming from" tennis where I add silicone to the butt end of the racket and lead to the "head" in order to get a lot more stable, and heavier, stick but keeping the characterististics of the frame.

  • @eleson00

    Why would I go for a counterbalanced shaft if I then have to use lead tape to get back to a reasonable swing weight?

  • @TTT-Turbo
    @TTT-Turbo 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Do u know what's crazy, I felt this 3 weeks ago and swapped my cobra for an epic flash and £80 because I couldn't feel where the head was.
    I had been asking about for extra weights etc and even asked you Ian what you added and it was a 10g at the back. But I couldn't find them.
    Swing the epic flash and immediately it felt heavier on the head and I was able to bomb it. For me I need to feel where the head is. My mate has the same epic flash head but the Tensei orange shaft and it feels amazing. Are the orange shafts slightly higher balance point as well.
    Great video again guys.

    @bigjuzzo8680 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Question, if I can swing all out at 139mph but only start to control it at 125mph, would adding extra weight the head so I can only swing it at a max of 125mph be a good idea. Theory says it should increase distance because of extra mass at a speed I can control. Thoughts?

  • @henrymonster9926
    @henrymonster9926 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I hate to be the guy that says it, but why put the big weight in the back second time? Completely understand the point was total swingweight makes the difference, but the enginerd in me finds it inconsistent. That being said I know it doesn’t make much difference, but you admittedly made it more stable and at proper swing weight.

  • @chynz330
    @chynz330 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Question Ian Frazier, can I get the best of both world in a club if I install the Boccerie heavy grip at a total 91 grams which has a 17 gram tungsten plug in the butt end grip? I know Jack Nicholas and Sergio Garcia praise it and honestly I really like it too. I even add it to my woods and hybrids, and dare I say, my short wedges as well because it makes the head seem like it's whipping the club head into the slot easier using just the help of gravity and the weight of the heavy grip. It seems almost effortless to control the sequence and the higher torque of the grip also feels like there's less chance of me over-cooking the club in regards to face angle at impact and shaft lean. Honestly I wish I had a skytrack or GCQuad to measure the difference because it feels as if the grip adds speed (perhaps cuz of the feel of a lighter head) towards impact, which after grooving a new swing due to feel, it seems I'm more accurate. Is this what Jack Nicholas and Sergio are referring too or am I losing overall speed for control because I can't tell at the range and I don't have to identical clubs to use back to back for a reference. Thanks guys! Keep up the good work and the great videos. They seem to provide a tons more info compared to other TH-camrs in club reviews and swing sequence due to your extensive knowledge in club fitting and Matt's scarily robotic power and consistency. Their isn't a better golf duo on the net since Rick and Peter started their channel, and they didn't provide half the cause and effect of the numbers when they use Trackman or GC Quad bc they're not quite renowned for their club fitting experience and the way you explain things to Matt seems easy enough to follow. Also Matt's IT and web design is a cut above others too with his edits, cuts and even the original use of quality music in the montagés makes each video a treat. God where where you two a few years ago when I started playing golf? It would've been a time and money savior for me as I use your reviews to purchase the gear I have now. Hope Ian starts a franchise down here in the states where he can tour and do TED-like talks at his facilities. I'd bet thousands would show up for those interested in getting into the business or just wanting to learn the basics of what it's like to go thru a club fitting where it's relaxed and comfortable because there, I do believe, is the number one reason folks just don't bother to get fitted bc of the intimidation or the lack of actual knowledge one can come away with including the fitting optimization. Thanks and keep up the great work guys!
