I think the anti-aircraft vehicles that mainly use machine guns are still in use and will never get out of fashion. These may be not as sophisticated and not on the spearhead of the anti-aircraft units, but they definetely got their back. In Ukraine they use mobile anti-aircraft squads equipped with mainly machine guns on pickups or trucks, immortal ZU-23-2 of soviet origin or even personal assault rifles to hunt drones and cruise missiles. Theres bright future lying ahead of such solutions.

Their air force is motivated and skilled, but not big enough and technologically inferior, their modern AA systems are too low in numbers to protect every single meter of their land, rarely working near the frontline where russian aircraft drop their munitions. Maybe this state will change when Ukrainians get enough fairly modern western aircraft, missiles and trained personnel in sufficient numbers, but it may take some time...

It's definitely making a comeback. They are cost effective for use against cheap drones.
Something that should be noted here: the American Avenger is _not_ an anti-air gun, or AAA (Anti-Air Artillery), as is evidenced by its gun being singular and a smaller caliber than its equivalents in other NATO countries. Rather, it is an AA platform, meaning it uses missiles as its anti-air armament. In fact, its missiles are also fired by the American man-portable Stinger launcher. However, its role on the battlefield is different than that of a SAM platform like the PATRIOT. Instead of being an airspace-denial/defense asset, like the PATRIOT and other SAM sites, AA and AAA platforms are used for localized air defense against targets that slip through a SAM site by flying low. Such targets tend to be primarily helicopters - hence the majority of NATO members using AAA - but can also be low-flying ground-attack aircraft, hence why the US uses AA.

It had too short a range to deal with AT missile carrying helicopters, but it's replacement was cancelled (there's videos about the M247 Sergeant York and why it never came to be). The bottom line is, the US decided that various levels of AAM systems all the way down to MPADS was a better way to deal with slow air - but mainly they planned to dominate the skies from above. Thing is, no level of air superiority will clear the sky of cheap drones, which is why everyone is going backwards and dusting off and reinventing AAA.

The Patriot has not been destroyed yet, but that's not because of it's quality, it just hasn't been located yet, a swarm of drones can destroy any vehicle. Until direct energy weapons become common, it will stay like that.
These systems look dated. I know the Gepard is originally first deployed in the 1960’s but is a beast. With radar and fire control geared for anti drone, the guns on these old units will be given new life. The U S is way behind due to their doctrine of establishing air superiority before the age of drone warfare. But they are working hard to get up to date. That Polish 23 mm open top gun looks like 1960’s leftover Soviet equipment.

High energy jammers will likely be the first thing they field (in various forms), and then they will begin launching counter battery fire at the drone's controllers by following the signal (like HARMs do with radar).

You don't understand that those were destined for low flying targets, helicopters in general, but after the war in Ukraine became evident they are very useful against drones. Apparently Gepard are very good to missiles too (in Ukraine!)

AAGuns like gepard can't stop fpv mini drones, and larger drones like bayraktar can destroy them from afar. There are several videos of ukrainian AAgun systems shooting iranian cruise missiles and drones but SAM missiles are more effective with longer range.
These thinga cant possibly shoot down modern fighter or ground attack jets can they? I feel like these would be more for shooting down rotary aircraft and propellar cargo planes like c-130s and c-17’s.
Bullet will fuse and blow up before hitting the ground. The systems are made that so, if you miss, it wouldn't hit the ground. Kind of important both on the battlefield and when protecting cities, otherwise hundreds of bullets could land in your own lines.

Not only would that be dangerous since it would blow up everything on the ground around what the AA is trying to protect, they wouldn't hit anything because without fusing, you have to hit it directly. Bullet will fuse and blow up before hitting the ground. The systems are made that so, if you miss, it wouldn't hit the ground. Kind of important both on the battlefield and when protecting cities, otherwise hundreds of bullets could land in your own lines.

@@Tchibber Are you trying to say they are firing standard high explosive or armor piercing? Not only would that be dangerous since it would blow up everything on the ground around what the AA is trying to protect, they wouldn't hit anything because without fusing, you have to hit it directly. That's not new tech, it was invented in WW2.
