We were flown in to a mountain top strip by a C130. Then we were flown out a few days later. Reving the engines so hard thought they would blow up. We took off and everyone slid backwards, and on the climb the tree tops scraped the bottom of the plane. Best pilots in the world including the Huey Choppers. C130s built in the 50s are still a workhorse of the military. Hats off to the pilots

I can't believe the smaller guns can actually hit anything from that high up. Imagine being the enemy on the battlefield, not seeing any air support in the sky and suddenly your tank just blows up.
They fire around 4 shots in certain parts of the orbit, to measure wind. At which point they are calibrated and ready to fire. Anything you fire at is a direct hit, always. As long as the crosshair was on what you were shooting.

People tend to focus on all the firepower this thing has but it was those cameras (and the guys running them) that really made it the GOAT. Most of the time getting air support meant a lot of dicking around back and forth to get everything set up. With these things half the time you'd ask for something and they'd already have seen what you were talking about and be set up and ready to go. The A-10 was the only fixed wing aircraft that even came close in terms of "user friendliness", at least in my limited experience.

They can refuel in the air and stay on target for days if they want. They can also manually select the ordinance type depending on the target they encounter. AP, incindiary, or other. My old man was in Vietnam around the time they introduced the AC-130. He's told me some stories since I've gotten older. He said you could barely tell they were there, but when they opened up it was like taking a marker and drawing a line from the sky to the ground (tracers.) Unless they fired the big guns, then it was two flashes then two big booms.
Chris Lindsey Never saw Puff or Snoopy while in 4 Corp, heard them, just a steady Burrr, the Vietnamese were very superstitious and some believed these were Flying Dragons as the rate of fire and every 5th to 10th round being a tracer, depending how fast you wanted to burn the barrels, they saw the tracers, almost a continuous stream from the sky to the designated target, believe it was 3 minis on each side. As the plane continued forward, the minis changed targets and it was believed that the Flying Dragon was really walking. Truly a wonderful plane that saved many lives, fly across a football field and place a round within every sq. ft.
My cousin worked on the AC-130 in Vietnam as a crew chief. I worked on the same planes years later at Hurlburt. The planes in this video are a newer model. Different tail numbers.

A. I. D. 75, almost 50 years ago, our call sign Green Coffin 75, no Swift boats on the big rivers like Kerry, admired the PBR sailors but their boats traveled about 25 knots and ours about 6 knots

no because its not flying anywhere near 20,000 feet. The cabins are unpressurized, they can fly up to around 7,000 feet usually at night to avoid AAA

People tend to focus on all the firepower this thing has but it was those cameras (and the guys running them) that really made it the GOAT. Most of the time getting air support meant a lot of dicking around back and forth to get everything set up. With these things half the time you'd ask for something and they'd already have seen what you were talking about and be set up and ready to go. The A-10 was the only fixed wing aircraft that even came close in terms of "user friendliness", at least in my limited experience.

I'm surprised they still fly manned gunships. The same job can be done with a drone and no one will die or land in captivity if one of them get shot down.

They can refuel in the air and stay on target for days if they want. They can also manually select the ordinance type depending on the target they encounter. AP, incindiary, or other. Also, you ever seen a drone fire a 105 howlitzer round? I think not.

Tbh no matter what game your playing as long as there is a AC-130 in it, you would have chills running up your spine when you see it in the air firing down upon you.

My old man was in Vietnam around the time they introduced the AC-130. He's told me some stories since I've gotten older. He said you could barely tell they were there, but when they opened up it was like taking a marker and drawing a line from the sky to the ground (tracers.) Unless they fired the big guns, then it was two flashes then two big booms.
What was he looking for in Vietnam? Weapons of mass destruction?

Chris Lindsey Never saw Puff or Snoopy while in 4 Corp, heard them, just a steady Burrr, the Vietnamese were very superstitious and some believed these were Flying Dragons as the rate of fire and every 5th to 10th round being a tracer, depending how fast you wanted to burn the barrels, they saw the tracers, almost a continuous stream from the sky to the designated target, believe it was 3 minis on each side. As the plane continued forward, the minis changed targets and it was believed that the Flying Dragon was really walking. Truly a wonderful plane that saved many lives, fly across a football field and place a round within every sq. ft.
My cousin worked on the AC-130 in Vietnam as a crew chief. I worked on the same planes years later at Hurlburt. The planes in this video are a newer model. Different tail numbers.
terry waller I stand corrected and thank you for this update, I was on River Boats, Mobile Riverine Force, RIVRON 9, 68 - 69 until we gave our boats to the VN Navy, from there an Advisor to their sailors on the boats in Can Tho with R. A. I. D. 75, almost 50 years ago, our call sign Green Coffin 75, no Swift boats on the big rivers like Kerry, admired the PBR sailors but their boats traveled about 25 knots and ours about 6 knots
